Nathan's mom was born in Jaipur and raised in Rohtak. I'd put her down as a Marwari, except her name is Maria?? She isn't likely to be Goan or Malayali... she could be Dalit Christian, which would be a really interesting choice, but more likely the writers just pulled the name Maria out of their favourite whitefriendsandneighbours bag.

Also Lloyd Shelley's true crime is not being a bad father, but a terrible cartographer. It's one thing to support Azaad Kashmir, but another to lop off half of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.

And I also want to underline that Nathan's respect for women has been a part of his character from day 1.

And I have always headcanoned that as due to his sister. We saw how she is a successful lawyer at a firm who married a desi Muslim man. She and her parents both chose to marry brown people from a different nationality/community/religion from them (in a country that rewards allying with whiteness), and raise kids with that mixed heritage. And Nathan has been a part of that raising kids - he has been involved in providing carework and affection to his niece. I bet Nicole Shelley was responsible for connecting their parents' values to Nathan's generational approach to feminism (and race). To respect fidelity without prudery.

Lloyd Shelley may never be a great cartographer.

Maria Shelley may always need help fixing the wifi.

But they have a loving, rock-solid marriage of thirty-six years.

Nathan recognizes the example they set.

When they hit a milestone anniversary, Nathan took his own parents out on a date to celebrate.

When he wanted to pursue a relationship, Nathan poured his soul (and his crafting supply) into a romantic gesture based on Lloyd's to Maria.

When his boss arranged for an evening of parallel infidelity, Nathan noped the fuck out of there.

Nathan's respect for committed relationships (his own, his parents', and even Rupert's) overrode his deep yearning for intimate friendships with other men.

The role Lloyd and Maria Shelley played in shaping their son's view of relationships and fidelity cannot be overstated.

I fear (for the sake of my blood pressure) that credit for Nathan's decision will not be given to Lloyd and Maria, or even Nathan himself. I fear that somehow fans and journalists and even the show will make this about how Ted or the Diamond Dogs or Jade "fixed" Nathan or taught him how to be a Real Man. I fear that this fandom's love affair with whiteness will once again stymy appreciation of Nathan and his family.

Assorted Notes:

Dreams of Doom has lines for five Katarinas, and the song allows for the parts to be divided among 5 different actors. However, notes in the margins allow for understaffed productions to use a single actor, using props and musical cues to indicate which of the five is speaking is acceptable.

The performance of My Daughter ends with Millidiana grounding Katarina for a year. Our Daughter is Luigi trying to talk her out of it.

Geordo and Keith are not required to carry prop swords during the performance of Not Friends, though it is encouraged.

While the original Dreams of Doom focuses on all the ways Fortune Lover's romantic narrative could be the death of Katarina, the reprise focuses on the rest of the cast highlighting all the ways her obliviousness could be the end of her.

Stupid! Stupid! Music! Music! starts with an argument, descends into name-calling, and ends with spirited tap-dancing.
