Wednesday, December 20: Black Star Riders, "Heavy Fire"
The whole Black Star Riders concept was well past its sell-by date once Heavy Fire rolled around: it was perfectly fine that Scott Gorham was actively playing music again, and with a band of seasoned and respected journeymen in tow, but this was far removed from the context of the Thin Lizzy reunion/tribute from which a chunk of this group emerged.  And despite Ricky Warwick’s baritone and phrasing recalling Phil Lynott (hence why he was recruited for the Lizzy lineup in the first place), Black Star Riders had proven over its previous two albums to be nothing more than a serviceable albeit mostly average hard rock band.  And “Heavy Fire” itself was generally more of the same, with propulsive but not especially forceful drumming from Jimmy DeGrasso, melodic and occasionally Celtic-tinged guitars from Gorham and Damon Johnson, and Warwick’s husky vocalizing.  The group sounded committed and engaged with the material, and Nick Raskulinecz’s production gave everyone ample space.  It was an enjoyable hard rock number, but it also faded from memory fairly quickly, just like most Black Star Riders tunes.

Darla Records is more versatile than one could have asssumed and we have noticed they house many intriguing idioms under their roof despite them having a certain base. Look, they were basically founded as an indie rock label, so they have to some indie rockers, correct? Well, they do have a couple of them, though I shall present to you Superdrag. To be honestly, I'm mostly doing this thanks to them sounding like a group that worked during the 90's on the scene. Yes, they could sound generically indie for you, though let us be honest here – indie rock industrial complex might be to blame in here, since the latter slowly modified into a set of sonic signifiers that amount to the soundscape many of their peers use as a brand.

Watch: EVANESCENCE's AMY LEE Joins HALESTORM For 'Break In' Performance At Canadian Tour Kick-Off
Tumblr media
EVANESCENCE singer Amy Lee joined HALESTORM on stage last night (Tuesday, October 15) at the Vancouver stop of the two bands' joint Canadian tour to perform the HALESTORM song "Break In". Fan-filmed video of the performance can be seen below.
In August 2020, HALESTORM released the official music video for a reimagined version of "Break In", featuring a guest appearance by Lee. The new version of the track, which originally appeared on HALESTORM's second album, 2012's "The Strange Case Of..." , was recorded in October 2019 at a Nashville studio with producer Nick Raskulinecz, who had previously worked with both bands. The clip captured Hale and Lee delivering an impassioned studio performance of the track.
The updated "Break In" appeared on "Halestorm Reimagined", a collection of reworked HALESTORM original songs as well as a cover of "I Will Always Love You", the love ballad made famous by Whitney Houston and Dolly Parton.
Lzzy and Amy performed a quarantine rendition of "Break In" in May 2020 on Hale's Internet show "Raise Your Horns With Lzzy Hale".
Speaking about the collaboration, Lzzy told Amy: "What I love about dueting on that song with you is that it started out as as love song that I wrote for my significant other" — referring to HALESTORM guitarist Joe Hottinger — "but when we sing it together, it's this act of unity, especially with the two of us being women and being women musicians. It's like we have each other's backs. And the lyrics mean something completely different when I sing it [with you]."
Regarding the way the new version of "Break In" was recorded, Lzzy said: "We did it performance-style, literally next to each other in the same room — from beginning of song to end of song, singing with each other.
"I've never done anything like that, but especially with a female singer of your prowess."
Amy added: "Nick always gets the challenge and gets the most out of me… So he made us stand there in the room and sing it live together a bunch of times. What that really means is that editing, you couldn't use when you did something cool but I messed up; it would have to be that we both nailed it for it to make the cut. So to do it in that way was really challenging and it was really cool and it fits the song so well.
"I remember you saying, and we both were saying, when we were listening back, it's really weird, at times — I know my part, but you can't pick out whose voice that is in that one particular moment, 'cause we started matching each other, 'cause it was on the spot. It's really cool how that happens.
"It feels like a match. It doesn't feel like any one person is pulling the other person along a little bit or leading the train. It really felt like an evenly matched dance."
Lzzy and Amy originally performed "Break In" together in 2012 during the "Carnival Of Madness" tour, which was headlined by EVANESCENCE and featured HALESTORM in the support slot. At the time, Hale told Zoiks! Online about how the live collaboration came about: "It's funny. We had talked in the beginning of the tour, 'Oh, we should do something.' What would we do? Do we do a cover? Do I come out during her set? She came up to me, I think it was two weeks in and said, 'I'm obsessed with your song 'Break In' right now.' I was like, 'Thank you so much.' Then she said, 'I know all of your parts, all the backing parts and everything.' I was like, 'Sweet, that's awesome.' Then she said, 'This is going to sound really weird and please feel free to say no, but do you think I could come up during that song and sing it with you?' I'm, like, 'Of course. This is awesome.' We didn't have a whole lot of time to rehearse. We literally ran through it once before our show in El Paso, right before the doors opened. It was perfect. I told her, queue insane crowd noise. She was like, 'Oh, I don't know.' 'No, seriously — they're going to freak when you walk out on stage.' ... [And] they did. We couldn't hear each other for the first four lines."
Back in 2021, EVANESCENCE and HALESTORM joined forces for a massive North American tour that ended up being a rousing success.

#30daysmusicchallenge2024 for Daughters of Darkness!
Day 20: A song by an artist with a voice that you love:
Lzzy Hale & Amy Lee: Break In
Break In is the seventh track from Halestorm's second studio album, The Strange Case of....
During the Carnival of Madness 2012 tour, Amy Lee joined Lzzy Hale on stage for a surprise duet on the song.
In a interview with AltPress in July 2020, Lzzy discussed the re-recording of "Break In" with Amy Lee:
"We’re gonna release [the EP] in August, and there’s a duet with Amy Lee on there. She was nice enough to do this. We recorded it as a performance in the studio. It’s a really unique way to do this. We recorded with Nick Raskulinecz [Foo Fighters, Deftones, Alice In Chains] in Nashville.
We ended up redoing a song that we recorded on our second record called “Break In.” Years and years ago, when we toured with Evanescence, Amy loved the song and would come out and sing it with me live onstage. When we decided to redo this song, I was like, “Hey, I wonder if Amy would want to do it?” And without even hesitating, she said yes. We set up this studio. Basically, it was two microphones in the same room, so there’s a lot bleed. We literally had to record at the same time, front to back, as a performance and get it right. It was such a magical moment because she has such an amazing voice, and we’ve always had this mutual respect for each other’s voices, but to actually do it in that way… It was an experience I’d never had before with any other singer, and I’m just so glad that we got it on tape.
It was magical. It was really cool because “Break In” started out as a love song. But the perspective has changed with the song by having Amy on. We had this whole discussion like, “Hey, you know, it’s not really a love song anymore. It’s more like we have each other’s backs, and we support each other. We’re friends no matter what happens in this world.” We both got really misty about that, like, “This is gonna be really cool to put out, girl. This is gonna be awesome.” We’re excited about that."

KITTIE Releases Music Video For First New Song In 13 Years, 'Eyes Wide Open'
The official music video for KITTIE's first new song in 13 years, "Eyes Wide Open", can be seen below. This significant milestone is made even more special as KITTIE has announced its signing with the world-renowned independent label Sumerian Records.
"Eyes Wide Open" is a powerful statement from a band that has not only shaped the landscape of heavy metal but also inspired a generation of musicians to break barriers and defy expectations. Produced by Nick Raskulinecz (FOO FIGHTERS, RUSH, ALICE IN CHAINS, KORN),the single serves as a testament to KITTIE's undiminished passion and creativity, offering fans a glimpse into their evolved sound while simultaneously staying true to the raw intensity that first catapulted them into the spotlight 25 years ago.
Morgan Lander, KITTIE's co-founder and frontwoman, expressed her enthusiasm for the band's return and new partnership: "Sometimes, incredible opportunities present themselves in surprising ways. Just a few years ago we could have never imagined we would be getting ready to release new music as KITTIE. We've been given what feels like a second life and are grateful to Ash and the Sumerian family for believing in us."
Sumerian Records founder and CEO Ash Avildsen adds: "KITTIE are true female pioneers in heavy music that helped bring it into pop culture. They have been both influential in the studio and on the road, as I've had the privilege of working with them on touring years ago when they brought out BRING ME THE HORIZON, IN THIS MOMENT and many other present-day heavyweights as brand new opening acts. The ladies have now returned with what I believe is their greatest album since their debut that set the world ablaze. The attitude, grit and songwriting is all there and I am honored to once again be helping them unleash their talent to the masses."
Speaking on the inspiration behind the new single, Lander goes on to share: "Our first new material in 13 years, 'Eyes Wide Open' is a vision quest for truth. It is a torch lit in the darkness of ignorance to reveal one's true motives. 'Eyes Wide Open' is a lesson in trust, betrayal, and ultimately the ability to see behind the curtain to reveal all. It was one of the first songs we wrote, coming together again after a long time away from creating, and I think you can really hear the fires reigniting in this track."
The music video for "Eyes Wide Open" is a visually stunning piece that perfectly complements the song's themes of enlightenment and revelation and takes the viewer on a journey through light and darkness, mirroring the band's own journey back to the forefront of metal music, where they belong.

Big Wreck Grapple with Past Pain on Lush Single “Summerlong”
Tumblr media
Big Wreck rewrites the code for rock music on their latest single, featuring rich colour and artistry which finds the band exploring new sonic territories. “Summerlong,” is a towering and dynamic number which incorporates synths and lush guitarwork to ask existential questions that grapple with past pain.
I still feel the freeze and burn, I was there all summer long.
Day by day trying to wash it off from me.
At the outset of 2023, Ian Thornley (guitar/vocals) began workshopping songs for Big Wreck’s eighth studio effort. After sharing the music with longtime friend and producer Nick Raskulinecz, it became clear that he was not only excited about the direction, but that he was the only choice to lead the production charge on this effort. In May 2023, the band began pre-production with Nick, and entered the studio with Chris Holmes at the desk, and Nick directing the sessions. Over the span of two weeks, the band tracked 18 songs.
Longtime mixing engineer Eric Ratz was the natural fit for this new era, and rekindled the dream team of Eric, Ian and Nick. Fans will remember the magic that was created when Albatross was born in 2012 — an album that has delivered multiple chart-topping singles, and is now Gold-certified.
“Summerlong” covers all the bases of what fans have come to love about Big Wreck.

You were popular and you continue to work. Yes, I describe a lot of musicians like this, though I think many of those have fronted their scenes. I mean, Alice In Chains remain one of the biggest grunge bands in terms of impact and sales. However, the death of their frontman caused them to retreat, but you know the story – they did return. They found a capable replacement for Layne Staley in William Duval since then and I am also sure they are very much aware of the fact they are not the same group you could hear during their heyday. Thus, I don't mind the fact their latest records don't reach their 90's triumphs, because you can notice they enjoy what they do, i.e. they don't release their LPs for their obligatory greatest hits tours, they care.
