The Specter of Dime Hovers Above: Black Label Society live at Starland Ballroom, April 2nd, 2005
It had only been a few weeks since my previous, and first visit to the then-newly christened Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ. That show was fucking amazing beyond words! But this time would be drastically different. I don’t remember if I was invited either before or after my band fired me; but Idrees, Chad and I were going to go to see Black Label Society at Starland with Chad’s friend, who…

Monday, June 24: Grim Reaper, "Wrath of the Ripper"
R.I.P. Steve Grimmett (1959-2022)
Grim Reaper had outlasted the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and undergone some lineup changes before they got to recording See You in Hell in 1983, but tunes like “Wrath of the Ripper” were pure NWOBHM mayhem even with Nick Bowcott shredding during his solo.  Steve Grimmett’s wailing was a bit less histrionic than usual, certainly when compared to “See You in Hell”, and had more of a rough and gritty vibe to it.  Mostly, “Wrath of the Ripper” was a no-frills banger that aimed straight between the eyes and mostly got there on the power of Grim Reaper’s attack.

Monday, February 20: Grim Reaper, “The Reaper”
A highlight of the first Heavy Metal Heroes compilation, “The Reaper” positioned Grim Reaper as worthy New Wave of British Heavy Metal contenders, though it ultimately stood apart from everything they would subsequently release.  Most significantly, leather-lunged wailer Steve Grimmett wasn’t here: the band’s first released recording featured the rough-edged Paul DeMercado on vocals, so despite what the song’s title might suggest, the singing was short on hysterical ranting.  And while Grim Reaper (with Grimmett in tow) would eventually re-record the song with a different title and lyrics (“Final Scream”) a few years later on their Fear No Evil album, that version sounded completely different than this rough-hewn NWOBHM banger.  “Rough” is the word- Nick Bowcott’s riffing bashed more than chugged, while the rhythm section crashed along in fine NWOBHM style.  “The Reaper” had a sweaty biker feel to it, which rendered it a near-perfect early ‘80s metal anthem.  And while Grim Reaper would later find success with a much different singer and approach, “The Reaper” was arguably their greatest statement.
