Me reading about any communist system that ever existed on Earth: This is absolutely horrible, how can people nowadays still defend it?
My aunt: *is borderline working herself to death because she's brainwashed by evangelical preachers that are constantly stealing her money*
That same aunt: *is my boss and makes me stay at work well past my working hours because she's trying to do too much at once and eventually just had to give in and ask for help*

Honestly Beyond Waverly Place isn’t *bad* exactly but even just rewatching the pilot of Wizards of Waverly Place back to back with another episode of Beyond the difference is ….well. It’s staunch. A HUGE part of it is that Billie is fun & all but you can’t & never will recreate Selena’s comedic timing as Alex. There’s just no way.
The pilot got so many laughs out of me even having seen it a bazillion times by now while the chuckles Beyond gets as I watch for the first time aren’t even comparable to the full belly cackles Waverly has always gotten without effort. This isn’t even a true criticism as I never assumed Beyond would compare to the OG. That would be an insane expectation I’d never have.
I’m just rambling my thoughts randomly. That’s all lol

Kiss: A sudden, very intimate display of sibling love that can make princes blush furiously due to all the conflicting emotions they are still too young to understand. Given only on the cheek or forehead, or very occasionally the tip of one's nose, as kissing on the lips is the kind of gross behavior only adults indulge in.
Embarrassing, but sweet enough to make any big brother want his little sister to do it again, even if they never admit it. If he is bold enough to return the kind gesture, he'll have a quiet, but very happy princess for the rest of the day, as they are not used to receiving affection.

NICHYA COOKED AS ALWAYS 🗣🗣🗣
So the scarring discourse is still going.
No, characters keeping scars does not automatically equate to that being torture porn. In this context, fans clearly intend it in a way that says "even if you end up with physical marks, it doesn't diminish you". Or is Aang getting scarred torture porn too? Or do you think things like Mortal Engines movie shrinking the female lead's facial damage to a minimum "spared her of physical trauma"? No, it was afraid of depicting something deemed "ugly" and it's a huge disservice to real people who look like she was described in the book.
The topic was not handled super well in ATLA. Katara's wounds got healed leaving no trace on her, on her psyche nor on how she views Aang which is not just unrealistic, but you can literally feel in the show Katara having to go "no Aang it's ok, I'm fine, you don't have to beat yourself up over it, I'm healed, let it go Aang, it's not your fault," it is too much. It would have been much stronger had the burns left some mark, even a tiny one, because then Aang's reluctance to practice firebending would have made more sense and all characters would have gotten a more solid demonstration that the Avatar can be dangerous too. It would have been a wakeup call to Katara that Aang isn't a completely harmless kid she can always shield and protect. That's character development! This would have been a more powerful moment in the progression of their relationship, especially after they sort it out and Aang learns safe firebending later on, because they'd have a more real problem to overcome rather than just Aang's guilt.
Again, show didn't frame things too cleverly - there's no heightened moment of perhaps Katara being extremely happy that she discovered a part of her lost Southern waterbending heritage (just remember her behaviour with Hama, there's none of that here). The show just removes her wounds, she's confused about the ability, and this leads to Jeong Jeong making a point about how fire is wild and destructive. The whole segment ends with removing the source of the problem (wounds) and is about how evil fire is. Aang ends up being traumatized anyway, he isn't less traumatized because Katara's wounds didn't scar.
The point is - Katara gets nothing character-building out of this event, even though it made her cry and cradle her arms for several minutes on screen. Because of this her burns could be considered torture-porn (slightly). Her discovering healing abilities is not a reward she got exclusively because she suffered the burns, she could have discovered it by accidentally hurting herself, or healing someone else. Imagine if Aang hurt himself by being reckless and Katara discovering she could heal him? What she should have gotten out of specifically being burned by Aang, is a changed view of him. I don't mean her viewing him negatively, but taking a step back and both learning they should be more careful. Who said zutara stans want Katara getting scarred by Aang in order to make Aang a villain in this? He literally cannot be a villain here, he made a big mistake by being careless. It's got nothing to do with zutara. It's not helpful to misinterpret some storytelling tools that have nothing to do with shipping, just to prevent them from creating some later story hooks which could potentially be used in shipping a NOTP. Heck, Katara getting scarred could even be used (with skilled writing) in shipping her with Aang - like zutara fans use Katara being angry at Zuko and expecting him to demonstrate that he wouldn't betray or hurt them again.
And if you have a distaste for two happy friendly characters hurting each other on accident, that's fine, but well I have a scar on my arm from my brother's scratch that happened on accident. These things happen and stories shouldn't be scared of portraying it, especially if later on they show how to make ammends and overcome the problem. I'm not saying "Katara should definitely have kept her scars!!!" I am showing narrative weak points and suggestions how things could have been done differently, what benefits it could have had character-wise and what that might have changed.

if you don't mind the asking how did you and nichya find out you're relatives?
It's pretty simple: we realized our families are A LOT a like, I found out I have family in Brazil, and Nichya found out she had family in France, and then the truth was revealed when we took DNA tests to confirm what we already thought.
Thanks for the ask ^^

Just a reminder in case anyone has forgotten by now: This year is the first year we have our own week!
I'll be sharing a Goggle Sheet for you to add your prompt suggestions in a week from now (April 24th) and in two weeks from now (May 1st) the voting process will start and will also last a week. The results will be announced on May 8. That way we'll all have about a month to prepare our material.
14 prompt ideas will be picked, two suggestions for each day of the Zucest week and you can pick your favorite. However if someone is interested in writing more, we'll all be more than happy to read. And if someone isn't able to reach this goal for whatever reason, that's completely okay as well.
Poetry, art, edits or appreciation posts are more than welcome. Please tag the material as #Zucest Week 2023 so that it will be easy to find. You can share your prompts in a post or in any other platform and stare a link. Hatred towards anyone's work isn't appreciated.
And of course, don't forget to also show your love to our King and Queen! Long live the royal couple!
I hope everyone has a fun time!
Zucest fandom, I need your attention for I have a message for our Queen and King that you all need to hear.
It has come to my attention that there is no official Zucest week and that is simply unacceptable. So, to fix this problem, this is a post created to demonstrate how your calendars should look like:
First, it is of high importance to not forget @hello-nichya-here Appreciation Day that will be celebrated on the 13 of June from now on.
Tumblr media
The very next day, Zucest week starts and it lasts from the 14th of June to the 20th of the same month.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And last but not least, @signlessacolyte Appreciation Day will be held at the 21st of June
Tumblr media
During this time of the year I want to see fanfics, fanart, fan-created-comics, appreciation posts ect.
We will make this fandom big and then, as soon as we're the strongest fandom in the world, we will dominate the earth!!!!

Nichya, your post about the way Zutarians view Katara struck a huge chord in me. 1 month ago, I was a naive multishipper who had just finished ATLA and was looking for good fics to read. Went on A03 and saw there were a lot of Zutara fics, sorted them out by kudos to see what the 10 most top-rated fics were. Katara is my favourite character, so I was really excited to see her post-canon life.
And. Oh, man. The experience was so fucking weird. I expected a lot of happy Katara fics, because canonically she IS really happy -the war is over, her family is reunited, her best friends Aang and Toph are alive, she can go home now to rebuild her tribe. That's NOT what I got.
The top-rated one was about how invisible and marginalised she felt being Aang's gf, and how she escaped it to be a world changing politician...in the fire nation??? When canonically Aang supported every one of her ambitions and all she wanted to do is restore her tribe?? Don't get me started on how the fic had Sokka, Toph, even Gran Gran all villanised Aang and blamed him for Katara's oppression.
Another one was a typical forced-marriage with Zuko because of duty?? And she and Zuko had children and her kids found 12 year old Aang??? Not even going to touch that one.
The 3rd was that Zuko pointed out to Katara how she fussed and looked after Aang as a mom or older sister, and Katara agreed she "coddled him". (did they miss the part when Miss Katara was a trouble-maker and Aang had to save her everytime?? And she canonically thought of Aang as the leader in the group???)
Another one was how Kataang had broken up, but Aang was still waiting for her and "hoped to marry her one day" and she was so indignant she fell into Zuko's sexy arms. (I literally laughed out loud at this, because canonically Katara was incredibly jealous of Aang's fangirls from S1 and Aang never gave af about Jet)
One incredibly gross one when Katara marries Aang out of duty because "she cannot break his heart" but always loved Zuko. KATARA. The girl who was ready to abandon her tribe to learn waterbending in ep.1!
And 2 more forced marriages, one where Katara is Zuko's captive and pawn of war, and they have sex literally when she's still a prisoner of HIM.
Like. I cannot tell you how shocked I was. It really disgusted me. I promise I did not know anything about Zutara before that.
It was obviously my mistake, clearly Zutara isn't meant for me. People can write whatever they want, I'm not here to police anyone's fandom.
But I was just struck by how much Katara was unhappy and so cut off from her canon best friends (Aang, Toph) and loving family (her tribe, Sokka, Hakoda).
Either she was cut off through force (forced marriage, captivity). Or because she personally felt secretly resentful and jealous of Aang, "parentified" and burdened by Sokka, disgusyed by her misogynistic tribe...
And how no one understood her except for Zuko. No one could give her the tools to empower herself except for Zuko. Only in the Fire Nation can she be independent and free.
It just felt so wrong!!!! I gave up. I couldn't stand to see Katara so resentful, bitter, and sad with her canon life unless she marries Zuko.
Anyway. Thanks for the blog. And for writing such insightful posts. It really articulated my discomfort.
Once again: for people who claim to be "the TRUE Katara fans", Zutairans hate everything about her character and arc, especially how happy she ended up being. Half the misery they put her through almost feels like trying punish her for not jumping straight into Zuko's arms.
