Nicholas Torgerson | Learn to Play Guitar Songs
Tumblr media
Nicholas Torgerson — If you want to learn to play guitar songs, you will first have to learn some of the basic chords. A great majority of modern songs will only have three different chords in the verse, and then a chorus with maybe two more chords. You will be able to find plenty of songs you want to play just by learning the basic open chords. The most common being, C D E F G A Emin Amin. A 12 bar blues progression only uses three different chords. If you don’t know any chord shapes, you can find them easily enough on the Internet. For example, if you need to learn how to play Amin, just type in Amin chord and you got it.
Nicholas Torgerson — With the Internet you will be able to find the lyrics and chord progression to just about any song you can think of. If you Google guitar tabs you will find listings for all sorts of sites that have free guitar tabs for you to use. You can also just Google the name of a song and type the word tab after it. The one thing guitar tabs will not show you is the timing of a song. If it is a song you are familiar with then that won’t be a problem. The best way is to play along with a recording of the song, that way you will pick up on the rhythm of the song.
Nicholas Torgerson — If you are a beginner guitar player and do not know how to play any chords yet, you can teach yourself by the method I just described. However, this can be a long and frustrating way to learn to play guitar songs. I would highly recommend downloading an inexpensive on-line guitar course. There are a lot of courses that are less than the price of two private lessons. Most of them include videos of the lessons and they really are the easiest way to learn fast. You get your lessons in the privacy of your own home and you can go at your own pace. There really is no reason you wouldn’t be playing your favorite songs within a few weeks. One drawback to trying to teach yourself to play guitar is that you will probably pick up some bad habits, whether it be the fingers you use for certain chords or how you position your hands, etc. And while some bad technique might not matter to much in the beginning, it will eventually prevent you from progressing. You will then have to get some sort of instruction to figure out what you are doing wrong, and have to break those bad habits. I personally probably wasted a good 2 or 3 years of my playing career this way.
