Exploring the Hustle: Lessons from All Kinds of Businesses

Frenziz Crochets Every day, we encounter businesses in countless forms, whether it’s a quick glance at a boutique in a shopping center or an advertisement for a new restaurant on social media. Yet, we often underestimate the sheer number of businesses that exist and the challenges they’ve overcome to stand firm in today’s market. As part of our Technopreneurship course, my group mates—Annriza Lam, Cindy Clair Booc, Honey Rhose Petil—and I partakes unto interviewing companies to gain real-world overview on how it is being kept on going.

These interviews were a step into unknown territory for me. I had never faced a challenge where we had to interview strangers about their business experiences, which made the task feel a bit daunting, especially since I'm very introverted. We started by familiarizing ourselves with LimKetKai Mall, the area we chose for our interviews, and practiced different approaches to engaging potential interviewees. We reassured ourselves with the thought that at the end of the day, 'We're just a bunch of students trying our best to survive college, and they'll probably forget about us by the next day given how many people they encounter,' just to boost our confidence a bit. 😂

The next day, we took our time make and refine our questions, ensuring appropriate questions for the types of businesses we planned to engage with. We tried to keep our questions straightforward and easy respond to make our interviewees feel at ease.

ALBERTO

Our first stop was Alberto, a boutique located on the first floor of the West part of the Mall. With over thirty years in the leather goods industry, their mission is to provide customers with quality footwear that offers good value for money, enhancing their lives one pair at a time. Their offerings range from wedges and sandals to office shoes, men's footwear, and bags.

We spoke with Aljen Padoc Tagaylo, who works as a Cash Reliever at the store. She highlighted the importance of providing customers with comfortable products and accurate information. Despite the challenge of being compared to other brands, Aljen assured us that Alberto prioritizes customer comfort and product quality. She also mentioned that they often receive positive feedback from repeat customers. An advice that she gave us, as budding technopreneurs, was to focus on effective advertising and staying updated on trends that appeal to younger generations to help our future businesses grow.

ACER

Our next interview took place at the Acer Concept Store. Opened in August 2022, this store is part of Upson’s expansion strategy, which has seen Acer stores pop up in five locations since 2021. The store offers a wide range of tech products, including desktops, laptops, monitors, and gaming gear. They also provide services like game and operating system installations, catering primarily to middle-class consumers.

Chris John Cayetano, a sales technician also a wonderful individual to talk to, shared insights into the store’s operations. He highlighted the importance of hitting monthly sales targets and how bonuses and incentives play a crucial role in boosting team morale and financial stability. Providing excellent service is key to customer satisfaction, although Chris noted that sales can fluctuate depending on the season, which presents its own set of challenges. His advice was that starting a business often involves a lengthy process of recouping initial investments, emphasizing the need for patience and perseverance.

Our third interview was with Jerly Galo Serana, who owns Frenziz Crochet, a business she named after her daughter. Specializing in handmade crochet items, Jerly’s products cater to people of all ages and preferences. What began as a hobby two years ago has grown into a business she officially launched in 2021. Since then, 

Frenziz Crochet has expanded to several malls, including LimKetKai, Ayala Malls Centrio, Robinsons Iligan, Robinsons Valencia, and SM Downtown. As of August 2024, her products were featured at the Higalaay Festival bazaar in the LimKetKai Mall Rotunda.

Jerly’s enthusiasm was evident throughout our conversation. She emphasized that hard work, dedication, and maintaining a distinct identity are crucial in setting her products apart from competitors. Starting her business with little financial investment, she focused on refining her skills, driven by a belief in showcasing her talent. Perseverance and a genuine passion for her craft are what keep her business thriving. Despite facing obstacles like exhaustion and creative blocks, Jerly’s background in HR and sales, combined with a positive mindset, has helped her overcome them. She expressed deep satisfaction in both her personal fulfillment and the financial stability her business provides.

COLOURS FOTO

Colours Foto is an authorized dealer of major camera brands like Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Fujifilm. With over three decades in the industry, the store offers a wide range of photography equipment, from DSLRs to drones. The LimKetKai branch, which opened in October 2018, is one of several locations, including branches in Ayala Center Cebu, Ayala Centrio CDO, and Island City Mall Tagbilaran.

Jen Revil, who we interviewed for this store, explained that the business aims to attract more customers and maintain a fully stocked inventory. However, she mentioned that the store faces challenges due to inconsistent customer traffic and the nature of their products, which aren’t bought frequently. Despite these hurdles, maintaining a well-stocked store helps them achieve steady profits.

RTB VARIETY STORE

Our final interview of the week was with RTB Variety Store, a vendor at the Higalaay Festival bazaar in the Limketkai Mall Rotunda. In addition to this event, they have participated in other bazaars, including Eid al-Fitr and ‘Farm to Market’ events. The store showcases a variety of Philippine handicrafts, from batik malongs to native bags and Islamic souvenirs. Their target audience includes both locals and tourists, with products that reflect the rich diversity of Philippine culture.

We interviewed Rosie Tumarong Belog, the owner, who shared that their primary goal is to continue growing and expanding their business. To ensure smooth operations, they focus on maintaining up-to-date stock and delivering excellent customer service. While they experience slow sales days, Rosie noted that the positive feedback they receive speaks to the uniqueness and appeal of their products.

Reflections and Learnings

The interviews we conducted emphasized the crucial role of a customer-centric approach, a principle echoed by every business we spoke with. Understanding and meeting customer needs is the cornerstone of success, with empathy and exceptional customer service being vital in creating positive experiences. Additionally, maintaining well-managed inventory and offering incentives for both customers and employees are key strategies for ensuring satisfaction and motivation.

Through these discussions, I also realized that starting a business requires more than just a good idea—it demands passion, persistence, and resilience. The stories shared by the business owners deepened our respect for their hard work and reminded us that with the right mindset, we too can create something meaningful. After a day of interviews, my group and I felt a strong sense of accomplishment, inspired by the remarkable individuals we met and their dedication to their craft. This experience has fueled our determination to pursue our own entrepreneurial dreams with renewed vigor.

Company Interviews — Week 1-2

Businesses exist all around us and it is something that we tend to overlook. From passing by boutiques in the mall to scrolling past an advertisement for a restaurant on our phones, it can be hard to imagine just how many businesses are out there worldwide and all the trials they must have gone through to get to where they are today. For our Technopreneurship subject, we were given the unique task of interviewing thirty companies in order to gain practical insights from employees and business owners alike. My group mates are Annriza Lam, Francis Padero, and Honey Rhose Petil, who I collaborated with for this project. And to start, we interviewed five businesses within the LimKetKai Mall for the first week. 

Getting Started ✅

In full honesty, this was not something that we are familiar with right away. As someone who hasn’t experienced this type of challenge before where we interview strangers about the business that they own or work at, it definitely was an intimidating task. We started with exploring the area in which we would like to interview first, which was in LimKetKai Mall. Then, the next day, we started creating our list of questions and narrowed it down to the type of questions that will suit the businesses that we plan to interview. We also simplified it so our interviewees will feel more comfortable answering it. We then went to the mall once more, our guide questions in hand, rehearsed, and began scouting for potential people who were willing to share their insights.

1. ALBERTO

Located in the West Concourse and on the 1st floor, this branch in LimKetKai Mall was the first business that we interviewed. From the information gathered, this shoe store has been in the leather goods industry for over thirty years, and their main goal is to offer quality and value-for-money products to Filipinos and make their lives better by providing one quality pair at a time. Their top products include wedges, sandals, school and office shoes, mens shoes and loafers, and even bags.

As for the interview itself, we talked to Aljen Padoc Tagaylo who was a Cash Reliever there. We were really grateful that she was willing to offer some of her time to share her firsthand experiences to us. When asked about the business’ goals and the key factors in making sure operations run smoothly on a day-to-day basis, she emphasized the importance of serving the customers comfortable products and giving the correct information when asked about their shoes. She also mentioned that the problem of being compared to other shoe brands can be a challenge as an employee working there, but she was quick to reassure that Alberto brings sellability and comfort to customers no matter what. Aljen confirmed this by saying that they receive positive feedback from loyal customers all the time when we asked her about customer feedback. And lastly, when we asked what advice she could give us as aspiring technopreneurs, she shared that it’s important to advertise and to look at what’s trending with the young generation in order to scale up our future business.

2. ACER CONCEPT STORE

Continuing along the West Concourse in the mall, the Acer concept store was the second business we had the opportunity to visit. Opened on August 22, 2022, this store is part of a successful expansion by Upson, which has launched Acer stores in five strategic locations since 2021. With a commitment to providing customers with a wide array of products and an immersive shopping experience, this store features everything from desktops and laptops to monitors, projectors, gaming gear, and even air purifiers. They also assist in installing games and operating systems, with their main target market being the middle class.

Chris John Cayetano, a sales technician, was our second interviewee for today. When asked about the shop’s goals, he emphasized the need to reach a certain quota every month. For that to be possible, he answered that not only does it take customers and prospects to ensure that the business runs smoothly, but bonuses and incentives help them a lot as well in boosting morale and financial well-being. To ensure customer satisfaction, he talked about the importance of good service and accommodation. However, he noted that a major challenge is the seasonal nature of gadget sales, leading to periods with fewer customers. He also advised that when starting a business, it can take months to regain the initial investment, even with a clear target audience, due to the unpredictable nature of the process.

3. FRENZIZ CROCHET

The third interviewee that we had the pleasure to meet was Jerly Galo Serana, a business owner at Frenziz Crochet. Her business, named after her daughter, specializes in creating one-of-a-kind handmade crochet items that are tailored to suit customers of all ages in terms of aesthetics and sizes. Jerly has been crocheting for two years as a hobby and officially started her business in 2021. Since then, she has expanded to several malls, including LimKetKai, Ayala Malls Centrio, Robinsons Iligan, Robinsons Valencia, and SM Downtown. Currently, as of August 2024, Frenziz Crochet is featured at the Higalaay Festival bazaar in the Limketkai Mall Rotunda.

While interviewing her, I really noticed how eager she was to spare time for us and share her business behind the scenes. Her passion for her craft and contentment with her business's progress shone through. Jerly emphasized the importance of hard work and quality in setting her products apart from competitors, believing that having a unique identity is key. Starting with almost no monetary investment, she focused on honing her talent, believing that if you have a gift, you should showcase it. When asked what keeps her business running smoothly, she answered that it’s all about perseverance and loving your own work. Though she faces challenges, including exhaustion and feeling stuck at times, her experience in HR, salesmanship, and maintaining a positive mental attitude helped her push through. Finally, she finds both happiness and financial stability in her work with Frenziz Crochet.

4. COLOURS FOTO

Located in the East Concourse of the mall, this business has been an authorized dealer of major camera and accessory brands for Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, Gopro and more for 30 years. They offer products from DSLRs, mirrorless, advanced compacts, and adventure cameras to drones, gimbals and other accessories. This particular branch in LimKetKai opened its doors in October 2018, now also a part of other branches located in Ayala Center Cebu, Ayala Centrio CDO, and Island City Mall Tagbilaran.

In our fourth interview, Jen Revil shared that the business's main goals are to attract more customers and maintain full stock levels. To keep customers satisfied, they focus on meeting their needs with the right products. However, she noted that challenges are present due to a lack of customers and sales, as their products don't really need to be bought that often. While the business generally maintains steady profits when stocked, slow days and monthly sales quotas present difficulties, and they don't always meet their targets.

5. RTB VARIETY STORE

The last business that we interviewed was on display as a bazaar for the Higalaay Festival in Limketkai Mall Rotunda. Aside from this event, they also displayed their booth for Eid al-Fitr, ‘Farm to Market’ event spearheaded by the Department of Agriculture Region X, and for the ‘Pinoy Tiangge’ event for Philippine Independence Day in the same location. They offer a variety of products that showcase the diversity of Philippine handicrafts, including malongs in batik designs, native bags and shirts, Islamic souvenirs, Maranao apparel and decorations, and even products from Thailand. They have a wide range of target customers, with foreigners and people outside the region in general.

We interviewed Rosie Tumarong Belog, the business owner, who shared that they primarily aim that their business continues to thrive and branch out. To keep things running smoothly, they ensure stocks are complete and up-to-date before opening, and prioritize good customer service. Customers can buy in bulk and enjoy discounts and freebies, which helps maintain satisfaction. When we asked them if they have any challenges, they answered that they do experience slow sales days, but the positive feedback they receive shows their products' uniqueness and appeal.

Over the past year, the majority of the Acer Aspire One Linux support has been up streamed; nonetheless, “nearly full support” for this laptop still requires the EC driver support. Completing the remaining components for a satisfactory Linux experience with this Acer ARM laptop was getting the embedded controller to function properly.

For the Linux 6.10 kernel cycle, the Acer Aspire One embedded controller driver is configured to be up streamed. Lid status detection, USB Type-C DP Alt Mode HPD, battery/charger monitoring, some keyboard configurations, and other associated EC functions require the EC driver. It took months for a custom driver to be reviewed and revised in order to support the EC.

Recently, the Acer Aspire One driver was queued into the platform-drivers-x86 for-next branch, indicating that it was meant to be submitted during the Linux 6.10 merging window that takes place the next month. Nearly 600 line driver and Device Tree code are ready for Linux 6.10. For Linux 6.10, the almost 600 line driver and related Device Tree code are available.

Chromebooks set to take the biggest hit as global PC sales slow

In 2020, the PC industry was able to reap significant benefits due to a sudden shift towards remote work and studying. This growth continued in 2021, as manufacturers had a huge backlog of orders that they needed to fill. Analysts predict that PC sales will drop slightly to pre-pandemic levels this year. This shouldn't be surprising to anyone.

In Q2 of 2022, after two years of chaos on the PC market, things began to normalize . After experiencing multiple shocks resulting from component shortages and rising material costs, manufacturers were able to breathe a sigh after a short time.

Gartner believes that the industry should prepare for a drop of 9.5 percent in global PC shipments. They expect consumer demand will drop by 13.5 % compared to last. The business PC market will experience a slight dip, of 7.2 percent. However, this could still affect OEMs such as Dell, HP and Lenovo.

Even more sobering is the forecast for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). Gartner predicts that consumer PC demand could drop by 14 percent in EMEA this year. According to their projections, tablet and smartphone sales will drop by around seven percent. Samsung and other OEMs have reduced component orders due to a large inventory. However, this may only be a temporary solution google chromebook.

Gartner's senior director Gartner Ranjit Atwal believes that a perfect storm is forming due to the Russia/Ukraine war, high inflation and currency fluctuations. OEMs have also covered a large part of the demand that has been created by remote work. Chromebook sales, in particular, are expected to decline this year.

Atwal claims that Chromebook sales soared at the end of 2020. However, this success was short lived. In a quarter, 11 million Chromebooks were purchased by education buyers. However, the demand for these devices gradually declined through 2021. Chromebook sales will be down 30 percent this year. This is bad news to Samsung, Acer HP Lenovo and Dell.

Since GPU prices are now returning to normal levels, the demand for motherboards has decreased. Many consumers don't see the value of motherboards and GPU bundles. The situation could change in the next few months, as a oversupply DRAM may make DDR5 prices more attractive to those looking to switch to Intel's LGA 1700 or AMD's Am5.

Heute hat Acer sich mit seiner Online-Veranstaltung Next@Acer 2021 seinen interessierten Kunden präsentiert. Dabei startet die Präsentation mit CEO Jason Chen. Der stellte Acers Vision dessen umweltbewussten Selbstverständnisses für die Zukunft vor. und mehr...

Acer möchte mit Aspire Vero Zeichen setzen und produziert damit einen neuen Laptop, der Maßstäbe setzt hinsichtlich dem Recycling seiner Materialien. Aber auch bei der Verpackung und hinsichtlich der Batterien soll Vero hier neue Wege gehen.

Acer definiert damit keinen generellen Turnaraund, sonder tastet sich ersteinmal heran. Dieser super umweltbewusste Computer richtet sich zunächst an Menschen die bereit sind für ein solches Produkt. Doch Acer stellte mehr noch vor. Darunter die neue Swift X Series.

Mit seiner Concept D5 Serie setzt Acer die maximale Power für Notebooks frei, damit Kreative und Entwickler maximale Begeisterung erfahren können. Die passende Softwarelösung präsentiert Acer gleich mit. Damit stellt sich Acer als starke Alternative für alle auf, die sich an dieser Stellereher für ein MacBook entscheiden würden. Zum Einsatz kommt dabei Windows als Betriebssystem.

Auch sonst gabe es das ein oder andere Neue. Natürlich auch aus der Predator Ecke mit beispielsweise einem krassen 4K Gaming Monitor oder dem neuen Predator Triton 500 SE Laptop. Auch mit diesem Gerät dürfte Acer erneut Maßstäbe setzen. Dieser Gaming Laptop kann mit der 11. Generation herausragender Intel Prozessoren, einem GEFORCE Nvidia RTX, 5G Connectivity und vielem mehr aufwarten.

Während Acer bei der Next@Acer im letzten Jahr stark auf Chromebooks gesetzt hat, war in diesem Jahr die Chromebook Sparte für Acer keinen Kommentar wert. Acer Chromebook Enterprise Spin 713 nennt sich das neue Flagschiff in der Chromebook Reihe, doch dabei handelt es sich um ein Gerät welches über die Systemhäuser für Geschäftskunden angeboten wird.

Fazit: Ja Acer ist da und präsentiert sich erneut innovativ und vor allem macht Acer einen Schritt in Richtung umweltbewusste IT. Der Auftritt des CEO wirkt aber gezwungen dynamisch und gerade einmal der Predator Triton 500 SE Laptop gewinnt meine Aufmerksamkeit so richtig.

Was Intel und andere Zulieferer zu sagen haben, ist ja nett aber interessiert den Endnutzer nicht wirklich. Man sollte schlicht das Beste erwarten dürfen. Persönlich hat mir die Next@Acer 2020 besser gefallen. Dennoch Daumen hoch für Acer auch 2021!

the beautiful person's journal - #9: the twists and turns of the caddy show and the gradual rejection of formulas

the caddy show (january 18th, 2017 - december 12th, 2019)

strap in, folks. this is going to be a long and convoluted one. but i never realized until now just HOW much i had to say about this show.

the month is january 2017. caddy had just moved to his current house, he's now going by jim, and the last pre-2016 side show - current quickies - has just been axed. gone were the days of gimmicky characters and review methods...well, at least for shows that weren't the caddicarus show.

in this update video, the ultimate side show replacement - the caddy show - was announced to be a variety show that would cover just about anything. modern game reviews, drum covers, video game event vlogs, reactions, shitposts, rants, discussions, the whole shebang. caddy's film fridays (soon to be rebranded as cinemaggots) would still serve as an outlet for film reviews - with the exception of one caddy episode that covered a quiet place.

the caddy show was really, truly the very first time the channel had ever seen a central modern game review series with no gimmicks or formulas. the closest thing there was to a formula was the "spoilers, alright? ok, noice" in every video, but that was mostly it. it was the only modern review series from 2017 to 2019 and it covered all kinds of modern games.

the show began the wednesday after it was announced, debuting with a review of the last guardian. next week's episode saw caddy attending a press event for the nintendo switch. if this event had occurred before this show was introduced, caddy probably would've tried to implement a video based on it into the caddicarus show, or current quickies. because of the way the channel was run at this time, every single video uploaded had to be a part of some kind of show, which limited video ideas and possibilities. the caddy show opened up so many new possibilities, such as videos like this.

another example of the benefit of this show is the mr. youtube videos, two satirical videos created in september 2016. these videos didn't really fit into any kind of format, but they were billed as caddicarus show episodes and put into the show's playlist. by january 2017, they were rebranded into caddy show episodes, with caddicarus show branding being stripped from them.

the show also had rant/discussion videos that discussed new gaming topics or anything else, such as the one about the n. sane trilogy where caddy expressed his worries about the game's graphics. obviously, that one didn't age well. there was also the one where he discussed those weird bootleg kids' peppa pig videos, and how an article about them conveniently dropped around the time he released the caddicarus episode about the show.

drum covers were moved to the main channel with this series. before this, there were only 3 drum covers ever posted, and all of them were on the second channel. but 2017 saw a blossoming in the number of drum covers posted due to this series.

strangely, not all of the episodes of the series were kept online. a couple of the discussion videos - the ones on caddy jumping off the hype train, and the playstation classic wish list - were privated in october 2021.

the caddy show also had sponsored videos, most of which were produced through 2017 and 2019, and none of which are public anymore. there were videos on portal knights, dreadnought, crossout, an acer predator laptop, oculus rift... i haven't listed one, and oh boy i'll get into that one later.

unfortunately, i couldn't find a working capture for the crossout vid. :(

he also did a few shitposts, a couple of them being about metal gear survive and the spyro reignited trilogy. unfortunately jim didn't unlist the original "pain" video, which was the "crash 1, i did it, crash 2, i did it, crash 3, i did it" video. but i got a capture here! there was also one on the nightmare creatures remake.

there's also a lorne lanning interview from 2017, which was strangely unlisted along with the 2014 interview...

branding/graphic design history

so for the first 9 months of the show, the thumbnails and titles of all the videos had the same format:

the thumbnails all had the caddicarus show's grunge background (albeit in grayscale), BUT there was a different thumbnail avatar specifically made for this show.

all the titles were "(subject of the video) - caddy". simple enough, right? well, this caused a lot of confusion among viewers. some viewers actually mistook these for caddicarus episodes and had assumed that the caddicarus show was going away and this new format was its replacement...no joke lol.

so, by september 2017...the entire "caddy" branding was removed from the channel. the videos still used the show's intro, but there was no longer a singular playlist titled "the caddy show", and jim no longer referred to the show as being called "caddy". jim began to start the videos by saying "hey everyone, caddy here"...which was weird af at the time.

"caddy" was removed from all the video titles and all the thumbnails were changed. there were now 3 playlists made up of episodes for this series - "NEW GAME REVIEWS" for the review episodes, which there were most of; "DRUM COVERS", for, you guessed it, drum covers; and "ETC" for everything else. and yes, those quotes were actually in the playlist titles. that same day, the caddicarus show's and cinemaggots' playlist titles were also capitalized and had quotes added to them. 15-year-old me did a humorous commentary on this back when it happened.

the playlists weren't the only instances of loud, all-caps yelling being added to the caddica-sphere. the titles of all the reviews were changed, and...hoo boy.

just by looking through some of these, you can tell that these stirred up a bit of...controversy in the fanbase. i was also pretty critical of this title format, and i'd roll my eyes with every new review that dropped. if you weren't around during this period, this was a time where the channel was in stagnation and in dire need of support. the channel was running almost exclusively off of patreon donations, and jim needed to do all he could to boost engagement...even if that meant changing all his titles to all-caps eye-catching clickbait.

off the top of my head, i can think of a couple issues that sprung up with this title format. one is pictured above - the shadow of the colossus review. caddy adores that game, but he decided to name the video "RANT OF THE RANTOSSUS". the word "rant" is generally considered to have a negative connotation. when someone is "ranting" about something, they are usually complaining about that thing. so when jim named his video that, there were fans that were reasonably confused. caddy defended this, saying "oh, this is a positive rant!" but like...idk dude. i always saw that title as being crappy SEO.

and then there was the infamous god of war review. posted on the caddicarus show's 6th anniversary, the video was originally titled "GOD OF DISAPPOINTMENT". now, there was nothing wrong with this video...well, at least from what i remember of it. i've not played the god of war games personally, but there is nothing wrong with giving a 6/10 score to anything, no matter how acclaimed or panned that piece of media is. and god of war 2018 was one of the most praised games ever when it came out. so lots of fans didn't take kindly to this video, or its title. caddy would eventually change the title to "IS IT REALLY 10/10?" before ditching this title format altogether by next month.

so with the trashing of these titles, we had to give up something else...

...what if i told you that the thumbnails pictured above didn't always have googly eyes?

on one night in june of 2018, 16-year-old mel noticed something strange when looking on jim's channel. first of all, i saw that the modern game review series had its awful all-caps titles gone, and that it was now called "CADDY REVIEWS". the "ETC" videos also no longer had all-caps titles...but they now all had entirely low-caps titles, which made them look very cryptic. (i.e. "I'M NOT SURE ABOUT CRASH ON PS4" became "i'm not sure about crash on ps4".)

but i looked a little closer...

one of the modern game reviews had googly eyes on the thumbnail, and i was like..."that wasn't there before..."

so i refreshed...and more googly eyes showed up.

panicked, i scrambled over to the playlist...and there were more.

i refreshed again. and there were even MORE.

needless to say, i lost my mind.

about a few minutes after i yelled about it on wattpad, caddy posted this tweet...

...and i proceeded to laugh my ass off. this man, who had just been utilizing these SEO-attention-grabbing-clickbait-ass video titles for 9 months, was now once again firing gunshots into the air, keeping property values low. caddicarus truly is the [tumblr] of personality-based video review channels.

a couple months later, with the debut of its 11th season, jetpackbraggin began doing thumbnails for the caddicarus show. these thumbnails initially didn't have borders, akin to the 2020 reboot. but about a few weeks in, the season 11 thumbnails so far were actually given red borders - which is definitely not a color that gives caddicarus vibes, if you ask me.

the modern game reviews were given blue borders. this didn't last for very long, as by the next week, jim would eventually settle on the blue borders for TCS that would last until the end of 2019, and modern game reviews were given the purple border that we see today.

after jetpackbraggin began drawing the TCS thumbnails, the caddy show - pretty much just referred to as "bonus videos" at this point - was still using the same thumbnail avatar...at least until the last episode. the last episode of the series - posted in march 2019 - was a drum cover of the tetris theme, and it was the only episode that ever used JPB's thumbnail drawing for drum covers...it was also the first thumbnail since 2017 to have the "caddy" logo on it, and the only drum cover to have the purple border on the thumbnail. it seemed like jim wanted to do more things with this show, given its updated thumbnail format, but he just ended up integrating most of it into the caddicarus show.

the fall...and rise...and fall again

by 2019, the caddicarus channel was back to one video a week - that one video being the caddicarus show, and the caddicarus show only. it began covering more and more modern games. drum covers were out the window, as his work became busier, and mainline videos kept getting longer and more elaborate. by may, we were seeing caddicarus episodes chronicling video game press events - episodes that previously would've been caddy episodes. basically, TCS was performing all of the functions of the caddy show, because caddy wanted to invest in the main series the most. he was drifting away from having other "shows" on the channel, as that was stressing him out. waits between videos became longer...and "longer" back then meant 2 weeks to a month. CRAZY shit for the time.

so basically, the show went out with a badass tetris drum cover, and then came the buildup to the channel's reset!

oh wait...the PUBG video...

in may 2019, caddy posted a sponsored video for PUBG mobile. it had a pretty bad like/dislike ratio. the comments were divided. he endorsed lootboxes. it was...it was a mess. he unlisted it in 2021, along with all the other sponsored videos.

and that was the last we heard from the caddy show...no more side shows...just the last of the original caddicarus show until the 2020 reboot! well gee, this sure was a long entry. for the next entry, we'll be covering the second chann-

OH CHRIST, REALLY???

so a few months after the PUBG video, crash team racing: nitro fueled had a bit of a fiasco with microtransactions. caddy was so angered by this, he decided to retool the caddy show into a rant series. this series would cover gaming news and other random things in culture.

of course, if you scroll through his mid-late 2019 videos you'll notice these videos aren't there. every single rant was unlisted, along with the series' dedicated playlist. one way you can get to them is through my unlisted videos playlist.

these 8 rant videos were produced between august and december 2019, and were produced during the peak of the channel's recession. caddy himself wasn't in the best mental state as well. these videos had thumbnails and titles of the clickbait-y variety, with the thumbnails featuring caddy's actual (non-negative filtered) face - something that was rare before this series. and that wasn't just the case for this series - you can identify season 13 caddicarus show episodes by the thumbnails that feature caddy's actual face (with the exceptions of the final 2 episodes on death stranding and jedi fallen order - it seems like these thumbnails were so poorly received that cartoon caddy returned for the very end of the original series). the definitely-not-reminiscent-of-another-gaming-youtuber upside-down profile pic was also introduced with this series, along with the banner featuring caddy's screaming face.

other than CTR microtransactions, he discussed things like the sans nintendo direct, playstation state of play, COPPA, the PS5 dev kit...your typical late 2019 stuff. interestingly, he discussed the controversy behind the IT part 2 poster, and it was strangely political for a video from this channel. basically, these videos were caddy's twitter rants put into video form - there were discussions from fans who were worried that the channel could possibly become strictly a political/game news rant channel filled to the brim with clickbait and horrid fans. i had the thought before that the channel would've become this had the caddicarus show not been retooled. and i thank the lords above every single day that didn't happen.

these videos didn't do astoundingly well, apart from the CTR rants - which got about 600k - 700k views. but other than that, the videos did alright. they were mostly well-received, but there were also fans who had concerns about the channel's future, as i mentioned above. and there were others who just saw it as his lowest form of content. but of course, you have to remember that this was a very taxing time in the channel's history when caddy wasn't doing great mentally and when he was struggling to pay rent.

and so, to FINALLY end off the entry, the last episode of the rant series aired on december 12th, 2019. after that was the caddicarus episode on jedi fallen order, and...with 2020 came the reset!

these videos were all privated in october 2021, but then unlisted in september 2022 - i guess if caddy couldn't private the caddicarus episodes, he could private these to get rid of the memories of that era of the channel.

and THAT was the history of the caddy show. there were so many twists and turns...and i had no idea this would be as long as it was. geez.

for the next entry, i'll be talking about the second channel's history, and it shouldn't go for as long as this one did.

Individual Progress Update 1 (9/13/22)

Hello there, 

Where am I now?

One of the most important hurdles that I have just overcome was the purchase of all my needed equipment for this 2D stop motion animation series. In other words, the most unfortunate thing that happened during the beginning of the semester was that my Acer laptop crashed on me and it would not turn on. Then, I tried to utilize my Microsoft Surface Pro 7 tablet, which helped a little bit, but the item was doing a “ghost/transparency” effect, which is the screen kept flicking on and off and that previous tabs could still be seen even after being closed out long after. These two series of events greatly reduced my capabilities not only for my capstone project, but just having easy access to functional devices besides my phone. 

I did take in both my Acer laptop and Microsoft Surface Pro to get checked out at Best Buy with the Geek Squad. However, the reality of the situation is if I fix my Acer computer, the equivalent to fix it would have been around close to the price of a new computer. I have had my Acer computer since 2019. On the other hand, the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 still works, but it still may be prone to flicker on and off, as it too is around 3 - 4 years old. 

At last, I made two significant purchases. One was my Apple Tablet 9th Generation and the other Apple Macbook Pro 14. The Apple tablet will help with my 2D stop motion animation as the main base to monitor, view, and to edit the photos. My Apple Phone 2E (Generation) will act as the main camera to take the photos. My Macbook Pro 14 is now my main laptop that replaced the Acer laptop and will also be utilized for the editing of the 2D stop motion animation series, specifically using the editing programs Premiere Adobe and Adobe Audition. I also obtained the Stop Motion Studio Pro program and will be the primary program to take photos and edit the photos.

I also got a Logitech mini-keyboard, which was originally for the Microsoft Surface Pro 7, but now is a part of my Apple tablet as an additional component. Then I also got an Apple pen (Generation 1) which will help me traverse utilizing the Apple tablet and when using the Stop Motion Studio Pro, when taking and editing the photos. M654 Logitech wireless mouse is for my Apple Macbook Pro 14. I also have a pair of new wireless Apple headphones as well and will be a great assist when listening and editing audio. I know this is a lot of equipment, but this is going to help me not only for my capstone project, but so forth for daily tasks now and for the future.

Where am I headed?

The next important leap is to ensure that my work bench plan is continued to be tweaked. Furthermore, I now can build my script, storyboard, and shot-list. One the most important things when building my script is referring to my project proposal paper that I created back in the Fall 2021. That will act as the main catalyst to help flush out and consolidate my ideas. Once I create a draft of the script, I can then create draft for the storyboard and the shot-list as well. For me, as I am a visual leaner, these things may be happening at the same time. The important thing is that I have some form of a foundation for these items, it will be near impossible to create the 2D stop motion animation series, if there is nothing written for the production phases and how it will be executed. I will continue forth with these objectives.

Stable Love

Striker is the proud owner of a prosperous ranch with a lot of acers. Striker hires Blitzo to work weekends. Blitz is trying to earn enough money to start his own business, I.M.P., and escape his father's looming presence.

Juggling schoolwork, avoiding Stolas: the school president. His two exes. Fizzuroli and Veerosika. who both want something from Blitzo   Blitzo enjoys his weekends on Striker's ranch. Striker takes a liking to the schoolboy, offering free horse riding lessons. Learning to lasso. Those long and blissful nights under the stars, Striker's jacket around his shoulders, strumming a guitar and listening to Striker sing his tail wraps around Blitzo. After a ferocious beating from his father and the unyielding ice-cold shoulder from his older sister, Tilla, His twin sister Barbie tries to take the brunt of the beatings. Blitz is found wedged inside a grimy dumpster by Millie & Moxie, two high school sweethearts that everyone envied.  Millie loved to go dumpster diving, unsure of what she might find. They end up seeing him as Moxie starts to pull him out of Striker's calling card, slips out, and Moxie retrieves it. Calling the number on the card only to have Striker pick up after the third ring.  In a gruff voice, Striker orders them to bring Blitzo back to his ranch.

When Blitz awakens, he is unsure of where he is.  He finds himself on a tan leather couch with his Boss and two unknown faces staring down at him. Through many nights and strenuous mornings, Striker manages to wheedle the truth out from Blitzo, telling him that he is safe here.

Obviously, the Cowboy is seething Blitzo can see it in his eyes, the unbridled rage, and it was not directed at him. Striker sends M&M out, leaving Blitzo with his thoughts. Through the door, Blitz could hear the hushed whispers. He closed his eyes and bit his lips.  Not really sure if I should be here.  He pets the Dire wolf's ears, Loony nudges his hand. . The next day Striker refuses to let Blitz go to school,  still adamant about his recovery.  Unsure of who to trust there.  Telling Blitzo that school, for now, was out of the option until he could poke around the building and find out clues to where his sisters were. Moxie and Millie acted as his eyes and ears, retrieving intel and then wiring it back in his office. He kept his office door open so he could keep an eye on Blitz and Loony.

President Stolas had cornered Moxie one day, asking about Blitzo and why he hadn't seen him for a week.  While Fizzouali and Verosika cornered Millie at the lockers. It isn't long before Striker's ranch is invaded by high school students all worried about Blitz.

There is talk that his father had sold his twin into Fizzourl's traveling circus. The inane boy told him that it would be easy to sneak into Loo-Loo land and get her back.  But the world stopped when he heard about Talia and her murder.  Hot the authorities had found her in a septic tank.

Fizzouali learns that Blitzo's father plans to sell him to the overlord that lives there for good money.  Can Striker put an end to this mayhem before it begins? And What happens when Blitzo's father finds him.  Find out in "Stable Love"
