the one set on nelson lake
Somehow getting dragged along on a cryptid hunt in Michigan was the exact sort of holiday Hermann Gottlieb needed, per one Newton Geiszler.
Drafted yet another au fic while my student’s did their freewriting today; someone please exorcise these scientists from my mind already.
Tumblr media
"How much longer do you plan on just sitting here?" "Patience, my man," Newton murmured, too busy squinting through his binoculars to answer properly. Hermann rolled his eyes in irritation, once more rubbing his hands together in a futile attempt to try to summon some more warmth. The damnable heat inserts for his gloves had ceased working what felt an eternity ago, despite having been obtained after the recommendation of an accomplished mountaineer. "Not to disparage your hopes, but I highly doubt we're going to find anything." At this, Newton lowered the binoculars just enough to glance Hermann's way, a smirk tugging at his lips and a finger pointing accusingly towards Hermann. "Not with that kind of attitude."
Hermann huffed, perhaps a bit melodramatically, turning his own attention to the distant shoreline, too far for his naked eye to determine any differences between tree and shrub. Had you told him four months ago that the Hermann Gottlieb- cynic, skeptic, man of logic and reason and fact- would willingly be cramped into a tiny boat in the middle of a Michigan lake during a bitterly cold spring day trying to spot a bloody Bigfoot with his on-again, off-again worst enemy-  Well, frankly, he would have laughed at you.
And yet that was exactly what he was doing, much to his bafflement."I still cannot understand why you insisted we waste our entire weekend on this. Or, why I agreed for that matter." He couldn't be certain without looking, but he would swear Newton was laughing to himself. "Bragging rights maybe? I dunno dude, but if you're right, I'll let you hold it against me for... Four weeks? ...Maybe five." Hm. That was tempting. Unfortunately, most points of contention that he had taken against the man had- Well, Newton may be a hurricane of restless energy and too little caution, but he was often correct. But the existence of an alleged cryptid? That was pure nonsense. Aliens, however- unlike all the bloody ghouls and gremlins and gargantuan tall tales Newton obsessed over- Aliens could exist. The Universe was, after all, such a vast Unknown. And that didn't even account for the dimensions beyond the- "And you needed a break. I know your dad's been driving you nuts." Hermann's thoughts cut short, attention fully stolen by the man to his right. Newton was still staring at the distant shore, seemingly unshaken by the revelation. He had spoken so casually, was so unflinchingly blunt, yet Hermann was left careening into a tailspin. It was that- That bloody glimpse of sentiment this ridiculous man seemed prone to dropping unexpectedly. Simple observations and gestures of instinctual care that revealed just how much of himself was Known. Newton had been doing it more and more often lately; he read Hermann so well sometimes that he was beginning to fear that the confounded man had somehow perfected telepathy with all the scrap metal he kept in the basement. And what was more alarming- The observation was completely true. Lars had been pressuring him, insisting- demanding- that Hermann return to Germany this summer, to finally- Well, it didn't matter. That wasn't the life Hermann wanted, never truly had. And despite knowing his own feelings on the matter, he decided to take the opportunity confide in Newton, who- apart from Vanessa- truly did know Hermann best. "He is adamant that I return home. Wants me to take my proper place in the family." For the first time in the past half-hour, Newton properly lowered his binoculars, turning to Hermann with a baleful look. He studied him for a moment- an excruciating moment where the usual rambunctiousness was cast aside in favor of steely observation- before his eyes narrowed. "I love you man, so please don't take this the wrong way, but fuck that guy." Hermann was startled into a bark of laughter; the vitriol in Newton's voice, the anger on Hermann's behalf- It was a rare moment of finding true common ground, especially in a relationship as convoluted and complex as theirs. And Newton making threats was- It brought to mind the few kittens he had kept as a child, full of spite and such a blatant disregard for one’s own smallness that they truly believed they could intimidate. The image only made his laughter peal slightly louder, ridiculous and improper as it was. Newton, for his part, seemed completely perplexed by Hermann's reaction, features pushing and pulling as if unsure what to do with themselves, before finally settling into something like a warm smile, eyes narrowed slightly in fond bemusement, unable to completely resist laughing along. "It really wasn't meant to be funny, but it's good to hear you laughin' again." Hermann finally caught control of himself, waving off the comment. "No, no. I-" He snickered again, before turning with a grin. "You gave voice to my exact sentiments. 'Fuck that guy,' indeed." "So..." Newton trailed off, frowning as he tried to work something out, his next words coming out a little unsure, a midge timid. "You're not going back to gut alt Deutschland then?" Hermann winced at the pronunciation, but shook his head in confirmation. "Not for some time, at least. I-" He frowned, unsure if he should reveal too much of the matter, but this was Newton after all. If he couldn't confide in- well- then who could he ever trust? "I've grown quite fond of the people I've met here and the life I’ve built. I can't imagine cutting that short for Lars. No matter what his beliefs may be regarding my alleged ‘responsibility.’" Newton was offering some sort of awed and adoring look, still tempered by warm amusement. "Wow, I've been a bad influence on you. This is- I'm still talking to Hermann right?" "Sod off," Hermann tried not to chuckle at Newton's light teasing. "I'm the same as I've always been, you menace." "I mean, you've always had the potential Herms; no one's arguing that. Trust me; I know it's always been there. Just...” Newton’s head tilted slightly, eyebrows furrowing once more, his every thought once again clearly carved across his features. Hermann was grateful for it, some days. Some days, he almost envied it. Newton finally found his traction once again, expression softening and words taking on a tone akin to relieved. “ You didn’t used to be so.." He gestured emphatically at Hermann's whole self, ending with a rather dramatic shrug. "...obvious about it. Looks good on you."
Hermann hummed in a detached sense of agreement. He had become more... outgoing in recent weeks. Perhaps being surrounded by so many people who were unapologetically themselves was beginning to influence him.
Some small part of him- one that was still desperate for his father's approval, one that still preferred standing away from the crowd, one that preferred taking up as small and insignificant a space as possible until he was needed- was appalled at the revelation. Appalled by his behavior, appalled by his vocality, appalled especially in the liberties he had even begun taking with his wardrobe. The Hermann who had arrived Stateside nine months ago as a guest lecturer in an American university was leagues away from the Hermann freezing his arse off in a rented pontoon boat sharing drugstore coffee with the man who quite literally embodied the phrase "chaos incarnate." He found he much preferred the newer model.

ARE THEY TRANS: NEWT GEISZLER FROM PACIFIC RIM
Tumblr media
JUSTIFICATION: "Okay first off: tboy swag off the fucking charts. I’d be SHOCKED if nobody else has submitted him. Bro is like 5’6, wears platform combat boots and a leather jacket and 2013 hipster glasses, do I need to keep going. But in like more serious reasoning, first off his name is Newt, which I speak from experience in saying is just Not A Name people commonly have. He mentions in the movie that “only his mother calls him doctor,” and I’ve seen it suggested this is because she doesn’t want to actually refer to him by his chosen name. He’s also got 7 degrees and most are biology related in one way or another. He definitely did his own top surgery. He’s also got a really squeaky voice (thank you Charlie day)— t definitely did that to me, just saying." - @manicpixiexenobiologist

So here's where some of my suspicions currently are re: changes from pre-SDK PR2 to PRU:
Mako Mori's role -> Jake Pentecost Raleigh Becket's role -> Nathan Lambert Techbro's role -> Liwen Shao (building single pilot Jaegers)/Newt Geiszler (being influenced by Precursors) Newt Geiszler's role -> Hermann Gottlieb
Due to an offhand mention of full-sized rogue Jaegers in the novelization, I suspect they may have played a significant role. We already know that Obsidian Fury was developed from Black Maria, the rogue Jaeger piloted by two assassin sisters from Tijuana. I believe it's possible that PR2 may have opened into a world where these types of Jaegers posed a significant threat. I suspect Techbro would have proposed his single-pilot Jaegers as a solution. Herc Hansen would have been against it, Black Maria would have been sent to attack the PPDC headquarters, Herc Hansen would have died, and the single-pilot Jaegers would have been hastily voted in by surviving council members.
I also suspect these single-pilot Jaegers may not have been remote-controlled drones, because it seems likely that the pilots were meant to be connected to the hivemind in some fashion, and would both be vital to operating the Jaeger and expendable as far as the Precursors are concerned. As far as I know, the hybrid Jaegers were created after SDK took over. Without the hybrid element, the Jaegers would have to be controlled via an actual pilot, or an AI of some sort. If Techbro had originally intended control the Jaegers via some sort of AI or something, there'd be need to fuss around with pilots at all at any point. Additionally, the kind of Jaeger-interfacing technology that appears in the Aftermath comic suggests that human pilots were very much meant to be a thing. Moreover, the interfacing technology that appears in Aftermath makes me suspect the pilots of Techbro's single-pilot Jaegers would have interfaced with them through neural implants.
One thing that still remains a mystery is where and how kaiju would have fit into the scheme of things. Del Toro's comment that that the kaiju would be "very different" plus the presence of kaiju cloning in PRU has led me to suspect the kaiju we'd see would be human-made clones. But at this point, it's really difficult to say.

As a Pacific Rim fan, certified kaiju groupie, and confirmed Otachi fangirl (I rank her second in my favorites list, only Mothra beats her out and only Rodan has any hope of tying her)…
I am warning you about Uprising. It’s terrible. Sure, the kaiju designs are OK, but the plot is full of holes, there’s a voodoo shark in the room, Raleigh dies (Offscreen in between movies), Mako gets fridged, and Newt’s arc definitely has an ableist flavor to it, what with the conspiracy theory that autism doesn’t exist and it’s just caused by possession.
If you want to do Uprising, that’s your business, don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Alright, I finally watched Pacific Rim last night and yeah, okay, I get it now. From what I've read, the second movie is not as good but the prospect of a Charlie Day corruption/possession arc is just too tasty for me to ignore, so I'll have to load that one up soon.
Tangentially related, but I CANNOT unsee Luigi in everything this man does. He was truly born to be a green plumber from Brooklyn.

Details about Hermann Gottlieb's personality in the novelization that (probably) came from the bio written by Guillermo del Toro.
With Newt and Hermann's bios never being posted on Guillermo del Toro's Twitter account like Mako, Raleigh, and Pentecost's were, I decided to try and comb the novelization for information that might have been derived from their bios, based on it dovetailing with Guillermo del Toro's general writing style and habits. The following is a list of personality/psychological-related stuff that I currently believe were based on Hermann's bio: Psych evaluation reveals fundamental need to create distance between self and any problem, using data and mathematics as buffer. Obsessive neatness of person and workspace also reveals this impulse to maintain controlling distance. Currently estranged from father due to differences of opinion about value of Jaeger project as opposed to Pacific Perimeter Program. Inveterate filer of complaints, primarily against Kaiju Science colleague Dr. Newton Geiszler (q.v.). PPDC psychological staff recommends accepting but not acting on these complaints. (p. 73-74) Note: The above comes from Hermann's personnel dossier. Since Mako, Raleigh, and Pentecost's dossiers are all very clearly abridged versions of the bios Guillermo del Toro wrote, one can assume it's the same for Hermann's. Also, filing ridiculous complaints is very much the kind of thing del Toro might play for laughs, similar to how the character of Tom Manning was used for comedy in Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army. He [Newt] went to the fridge and dug around in it until he had half a salami and cheese sandwich, some German potato salad, and a bag of baby carrots that belonged to Hermann. (p. 98-99.)
Note: Guillermo del Toro's character bios pretty much always mention a number of specific food items characters enjoy eating.
numbers language of the universe and they will hide me I can hide behind them because they are never angry they are never wrong they choose no sides and expect nothing they are purely themselves and will never betray me ... Gottlieb was soldering together a robot can I build an intelligence that will pass a Turing test and if I could of course I can I must never say anything about it until it is done or Father will (p. 268-269) Note: The above is supposed to represent Hermann's stream of consciousness during his drift with Newt and baby Otachi, hence the odd writing style. With problematic to horrible fathers being a common element in del Toro's work, I think it's a safe guess that this was all based on his bio. Unfortunately, the novelization omits Hermann's POV except for when he drifts with Newt, so there isn't a lot of material here. But what there is suggests that Hermann was conceptualized as a deeply traumatized individual who tries to avoid conflict wherever possible, likely to the point of avoiding people when he can, and trying to supplicate them when he can't. This, I believe, is evidenced in the elevator scene, where Newt says "Hermann! These are human beings! Why don't you say hello?", and where Hermann (unsuccessfully, lol) tries to head off potential conflict with Raleigh with "You'll have to excuse him, he's a kaiju groupie; he loves them." (And speaking of the elevator scene, if you haven't seen the extended version where Newt addresses Raleigh as "guy" and tells Hermann to stop saluting Pentecost yet, you should!)
It also seems that Hermann was imagined as someone who tries to cope with all the things he can't control by controlling everything that he can - one notable example being 50% of the k-sci lab. It would appear that "no kaiju entrails on my side of the room!" doesn't just indicate a desire to keep his space physically clean, but it's also indicative of his ongoing refusal to let the chaotic and unpredictable Newt inside emotionally.
So yeah, it would really be great if all of the character bios were released (not to mention the 250 page universe bible... sigh), but... since they aren't, I'm just gonna have to resort to doing stuff like this, lol.

I have no idea how long ago this post was, but I was looking through the newt geiszler tags (just got into pacrim) and you mention that there are takes of the reveal scene in uprising where Charlie day is openly crying?? Where did you get this info? I can’t find anything about it
This is brought up in DeKnight's commentary track for the film! I can't find any clips of it, but it's on the bluray/dvd.

I can answer 5 and 7! The Breach is near Challenger Deep, the deepest part of the Marianas Trench, which is roughly 150 miles southwest of Guam. As such, it's several thousand miles closer to the western rim of the Pacific than the eastern :D
Tumblr media
Also, yup, Newt and Hermann are pretty important! In their intro scene, it's mentioned that they're the only two members of the research team; also, right after the battle with Otachi (pretty soon after Mako and Raleigh land), Pentecost orders Hermann to "Go to Doctor Geiszler, now!" so there's a general awareness that Newt's about to Drift with a Kaiju again. Considering what happened the first time, the two likeliest outcomes are 1. Newt winding up in critical condition 2. Newt finding desperately-needed info. Either way, a quick ride to the Shatterdome would be needed, hence the helicopter :D
Things I noticed on my Pacific Rim rewatch:
1. Raleigh had his left arm ripped off while he was piloting the left hemisphere, then had his right arm and leg shredded while he was piloting the right hemisphere. Holy fuck he has been through it. His resilience and battle focus is enough to be recognized by Pentecost, whose solo Tokyo battle was three hours long.
2. Implied that Hercules Hansen was one of the OGs, like Cherno Alpha. Wonder what happened to his copilot before he began drifting with his son. Wonder what happened to the Jaeger he piloted before Striker Eureka.
3. Pentecost says he carries nothing into the drift, but that just means he knows how to match with anyone, right? Wonder what that final drift was like in Chuck Hansen's head.
4. Tendo Choi is in command of the bridge when neither Pentecost nor Herc Hansen is present. I forgot that he reverts to Cantonese in stress situations, love these details.
5. I enjoy the bilinguals of this film. Also really interesting choice to focus on the western rim of the Pacific Ocean: Australians, Japanese, Chinese, Russians, and a badass Marshal who strikes deals with the black market and literally anyone else who will fund the Jaeger program. We get to have industrial apocalypse, alien thriller, and cyberpunk in one film. (Side question: is the Americas' coastlines devastated?)
6. Mako's expressions are so. Agh. Her face shows what she's feeling with unshielded honesty (she feels so much, like Raleigh) but she carries herself like Pentecost: deliberate, controlled. Very much his student (daughter).
7. Newt and Hermann are obsessed with their scientific theories being right, even if it means the possible doom of humankind. Iconic Academics. Also they must be important enough to have helicopters on call, since they run out of one to get to the bridge in time for the final fight.
8. Final goodbyes between Stacker Pentecost and Mako Mori.
9. Mako and Raleigh are two of many orphans who had no intentions of surviving the war that took their families. Raleigh's last sacrifice was simultaneously the most selfless and selfish thing to do. Good for him that he survived, Mako would've found it hard to forgive him.
10. "Stop the clock."

Wrote this one early on in my days into Newmann, probably inspired by the early fandom fics in which Newt has few fans in the Shatterdome. Mostly I just like making Hermann awkwardly attempt to comfort Newt. (I actually referred to an incident similar to this one in “Surplus”, but the outcome was slightly different)
-
This isn’t the first time Hermann’s seen Newton bloodied and/or bruised and, provided the kaiju don’t end the world in the too-near future, it won’t be the last.
And there is, as always, an instinctive thrill of rage that he must bury beneath a layer of ice. (Whether that rage is at Newton, for getting himself into trouble; at himself, for being so affected; or—in certain cases—at the person who laid hands on Newton, for daring to make him hurt, Hermann is still unsure.)
Finding Newton sitting at his desk, a bloodied tissue held to his nose, as Hermann arrives for work that morning is no different.
“What did you do this time?” Hermann asks coolly, depositing his bag at his own desk.
“Fug off, Hermbann,” Newton slurs back.
“Sounds like a nasty one,” Hermann hums, crossing the dividing line to get a better look. “You ought to have some ice on that.”
“I’mb find,” Newton insists, still nasally and snappish.
As Hermann draws level with Newton’s desk, he can see Newton’s glasses sitting in front of him; one of the arms has been snapped off and a lens is cracked. Hermann doesn’t bother to quell his frown.
Rounding to look at Newton, Hermann can see a bright new bruise still coloring on his cheek and a smear of blood just beneath his bottom lip that appears to have been missed in the hasty cleanup of his swollen and still bloody nose.
“That is a nasty one,” Hermann finds himself saying. “Whatever did you do to earn it?”
This is, evidently, the wrong question to ask.
Both of Newton’s hands bang the surface of his desk, bloody tissue still clenched in one, and his eyes train, burning, on Hermann when he barks, “Fuck. Off.”
“Newton–”
“No!” Newton stands from his chair, gesturing broadly to himself as his nose begins to bleed freely. “You come in here, see I’ve been hit in the fucking face, and just automatically assume I deserved it?”
“You’re still bl–”
“If that’s all you’re gonna do, you can just fuck off, Hermann! I don’t need that shit today!”
“Oh, for god’s sake, hold still!”
Hermann whips his handkerchief from his pocket and reaches for Newton’s face, prepared to stem the flow of blood that’s steadily dripping onto his collar now, when Newton unexpectedly flinches.
It’s a hard jerk away from Hermann, whose hand is still outstretched and frozen uncertainly in place, while Newton’s own hands have come up in what looks like aborted defense.
Startled silence stretches coldly between them.
“It’s only me,” Hermann finally says, voice soft.
“Well someone just fuckin’ attacked me,” Newt snaps, leaning back in to snatch the handkerchief from Hermann, “so excuse me for being jumpy.”
Attacked.
Though Newton is one of the most naturally incendiary people Hermann has ever known, he is not at all a violent person. He will rant and yell and gesticulate wildly, but Hermann has never once seen him instigate a physical altercation. For the ones he has been involved in since they’ve been stationed together, Hermann has rarely even known Newton to hit back.
(Largely, his strategy in these situations involves an advanced ability to dodge and find a quick exit. “I prefer to think of it is living to fight another day,” he’d once said.)
Hermann can see no marks on Newton’s dexterous hands, now. No indication that he’d engaged at all.
“I’m… sorry,” Hermann says. “To imply you deserved to be hit was… inconsiderate of me. I did not mean it that way, but it was uncalled for.”
Newton scoffs, the noise wet and congested, but his posture softens.
“What did happen?” Hermann asks.
Newton shrugs. “Was going into the mess hall, walking with Tendo, and we were talking Yamarashi. Anniversary is coming up, y’know?”
“I recall.” Hermann nods.
“And I actually got to be there when they cracked it open. Boots on the ground and shit; I was assisting the director the salvage crew. It was… amazing.” Newton shakes his head. “Like, obviously it was a devastating attack and people died and I fucking get that. I do. But to be there and see– see the enormity of it, the sheer power it had…”
Hermann can see where this is going.
“But I wasn’t even being complimentary, okay? Tendo asked about stats, so that’s what I was talking about: class and size and features and how far inland it made it, and then,” Newton waves one arm agitatedly, “some fuckin’… J-Tech yahoo comes out of nowhere and starts yelling at me. Going on about showing respect for the victims of the attack, and I’m like – I do have respect for them, okay? I’m just – I’m trying to explain my position, and he’s telling me to shut my kaiju-fucker mouth, which is fucking uncalled for–”
In his indignance, Newton has neglected to hold the handkerchief properly to his nose, prompting another drop of blood to escape; Hermann reaches up to fix it, and this time Newton lets him.
“So I might’ve told him to shut up, but then he hauls off and punches me in the fucking face, and–” Newton breaks off, shaking his head again, “and then, I dunno, Tendo was pulling him back and yelling about how he’s gonna report this to the marshal and I just… came back here.”
Here. The lab, where the two of them are safe from every attack but each other’s.
(Hermann would certainly have to have a word with Tendo later; he would like to find out for himself just what that tech had been spouting, and perhaps learn his name. Hermann doesn’t know what he’ll do with it, but he wants it anyway.)
“I wasn’t even–” Newton waves one hand, his words starting to skip tracks. “I don’t know what I did this time!”
“Well,” Hermann takes Newton’s flailing arm firmly in his free hand and leads him back to sit at his desk, “the way you speak about kaijus can come off as irreverent. People view it as disrespectful.”
“Then why can’t they just say that?” Newton implores, gaze confounded and bitter on Hermann. “Why is their first impulse to scream at me, or start throwing punches?”
“I… couldn’t say.” Hermann shifts uncomfortably under the bare scrutiny.
“I’m not gonna say I’ve never started shit, but, man, sometimes I’m just–” Newton pulls the handkerchief away from his face, suddenly inordinately interested in checking the flow of blood as he finishes quietly, “sometimes I’m just talking, and I don’t get what I’m doing wrong. Or, like – what’s wrong with me. No one will actually explain.”
If Hermann were one for hugs, now would be the time to give one. Unfortunately, he has never been a hugger (the impulse had, in fact, been actively stymied when he was a child), and he has never been much good at reassurance in general. He feels, however, that in this moment, he should really try.
“There is nothing wrong with you,” he says gruffly. “In certain cases, it is the rest of the world that must adjust their perception.”
Hermann has always believed this about certain things—about scientific principles, and about himself, and about Newton, too—and he thinks his sincerity must come through, because Newton gives him a miniscule smile.
“Now you really ought to go to medical. Make sure your nose isn’t broken,” Hermann continues stiffly.
“Nah, it’s fine. I know broken noses, and this isn’t that.” Newton glances at his desk with a sigh. “My glasses are toast, though. I’m gonna have to dig my spares out.”
“You might even have to start wearing protective eyewear in the lab, now that you have no backups. Goodness me, what a thought,” Hermann says dryly.
“Let’s not go crazy.” Newton snickers, then wipes at his nose a final time with the handkerchief and holds it up. “You, uh – Are you gonna want this back? I’m pretty sure I can get the blood out.”
Hermann can’t help the grimace of distaste that crawls across his face at the thought. “No, you can keep that. I have others.”
If Newton takes any offense, it doesn’t show. He merely shrugs, folds the handkerchief, and stuffs it into his pocket. “Cool,” he says. “Maybe it’ll come in handy one day. Who knows?”

hey anyone wanna feel sad with me? Hermann post-uprising has small fingernail-shaped scars on the sides of his neck, unnoticeable unless you get up close. Only him, his doctor, and Newt know they're there at all. For a few months after uprising, Newt picks up his old habit of biting his nails, but this time until his fingers bleed. He only stops because he starts wearing gloves almost all the time, keeping his hands covered. He still trims his nails constantly. Painting them, at least, is calming. He doesn't let Hermann help for a long time, not after the panic attack he had when Hermann had leaned down to look closer while painting little stars and he had realised how close his hands were to Hermann's neck, and suddenly he was reminded of how he had lost control and how that could happen again at any moment and- yeah, he paints his own nails from then on. It takes him about a year to stop hiding his hands in his pockets all the time; to start to hold Hermann's sometimes. To trust himself to just hold, to trust his body to do only what he wants it to. Hermann wears a lot of scarves and turtlenecks for a while, but always keeps his top few buttons open when he wears shirts and polos. Neither of them are quite sure for who's benefit that is. Newt has nightmares about being attacked; Hermann has nightmares about his body not being his own. At least that part is familiar. They've been sharing their demons since before the first Drift. Not everything is different, not even after all they've been through.
