fuck corporate. i work in a cafe inside a larger store, and we've been undergoing renovations since i started back in september. a few months ago the new cafe was finished, so we were moved to the new location within the store. not that bad, still close to where we were before, everything's great.
except when renovations for the new cafe were almost finished, we found out it was going to be smaller than the old cafe (which was already small). way less storage space, less space for us, overall just fucking tiny. but we figured, okay, it could be worse, we can make it work.
but then we started at the new cafe, and things started breaking. the nitro machine's longest streak of working days in a row is about two. it's broken a whopping 95% of the time. (why the hell did higher ups decide we need the damn thing when maybe one person a month even asks if we sell nitro??? i can count on one hand the amount of nitro coffees we've sold since we got that machine)
one of the espresso machines broke only a week in, and after it got fixed the steam wand was still broken, and a week ago we just shut the whole machine off. so now we're down to one working espresso machine, and this is HELL especially on days like saturday and sunday when we have huge lines of people.
only one of our cold brew machines was working from the beginning of this whole mess, and then about a month and a half ago the other one broke too. so now we're using this old toddy in the back that just doesnt work nearly as well and is a pain to drain into the pitchers.
on top of all this our oven and blenders broke about a month or so ago, so we had a solid week where we could basically only sell hot bar drinks, refreshers, and brewed teas/coffees. it was such a nightmare.
and to cap it all off we have two registers that only partially work. the new card reader at the new register has a broken chip reader, so we use the old one, whose card reader touch screen isnt working a solid 85% of the time and we have to tell EVERY CUSTOMER to please use the pen to select an option on the screen to pay because for some reason we're not allowed to put a note on the reader that the touch screen isnt working.
i miss the old cafe so much. i actually enjoyed working there!! but now everything's broken all the time, it's too goddamn small to fit everything we need, let alone EVERYONE, and i miss my friends from other departments i barely see anymore because of the location we were moved to.
and no one higher up seems to even give a shit about any of this. i talked to our regional manager when he stopped in the other day and told him we were really struggling with everything breaking, and he just told me "well, you can file a work order".
first of all, no i can't, because no one fucking teaches us how to do that in the first place. would certainly be nice if i could! second, we keep having people in to fix all this shit, and it just breaks again within a day or two. and then it takes a week AT LEAST for someone to come in again to fix it.
i used to enjoy this job, but now its such a nightmare. i'm really tempted to switch to another department but i'm not sure if it would be worth it since i'm probably leaving in a few months anyway.

henlo everyone!! i’m going to post another one of these #coffee headcanons because i’m in the running for a new coffeeshop job. enjoy!!
Shiratorizawa:
ushijima: grande ice water. his mother doesn’t allow him to have anything else :( but if tendou’s in charge of the starbucks run, he gets his boy a grande iced white mocha with sweet cream cold foam.
soekawa: a caramel macchiato. it’s simple enough but has a distinct flavour.
semi: he’s a little bit pretentious, so he orders something that’s a seasonal drink. that seasonal drink is an irish cream cold brew. it’s got the manly coffee with enough sweetness because he’s secretly a baby.
ohira: he’s getting a hibiscus refresher. tastes nice and isn’t sweet.
tendou: when he’s not drinking orange monster, he’s having an iced mocha with raspberry syrup. he’s wild but has refined taste, so this is sweet yet subtle enough for him.
yunohama: doppio espresso over ice. yes, he drinks it like that.
goshiki: nothing says bright colours better than this mans, he gets a kiwi star fruit refresher with no water. he wants the straight battery acid.
shibata: shaken espresso with oatmilk. it’s simple, and the sweetness is very subtle. it’s also one of the easier things he can memorise for when he gets nervous at the counter.
shirabu: now he’s full on pretentious. he used to say he was too good for starbucks, opting for only macchiatos from a small coffee shop, but medical school humbled him when he found out how much studying he actually had to do. somebody please take his starbucks card, this is his fifth nitro bomb of the day.
kawanishi: he’s a bit picky and a little headstrong, so he’s definitely getting a pink drink with no berries. yes, you heard me correctly. i’ve never seen a guy like this not getting a pink drink.
akakura: iced peach green tea lemonade. it’s a refreshing drink that pairs well with anything, just like him.
yamagata: trad misto. he finds espresso to be too rich, but he still likes the steamed milk of a latte. regular coffee satiates him, so this is his favourite drink.
sagae: another caramel macchiato drinker, though shirabu gets on his case for it being “too basic”.
umeda: just gets a regular grande pike, though he waits a bit to drink it because he doesn’t like when it’s too hot.

Tumblr media

The Bubbling Trend: Exploring the Nitro-Infused Beverages Market
Tumblr media
Introduction:
In recent years, the beverage industry has witnessed a refreshing revolution with the rise of nitro-infused beverages. This bubbling trend has taken the market by storm, offering consumers a unique and sensory experience. Nitro-infused beverages, infused with nitrogen gas, have transformed ordinary drinks into effervescent delights, creating a niche market that continues to grow. In this blog, we'll delve into the dynamic world of nitro-infused beverages, exploring their origins, market trends, and what makes them the fizz of the future.
The Nitro Boom:
Nitro-infused beverages originated in the world of coffee, where nitrogen was introduced to create a creamy and velvety texture in cold brews. This innovation quickly expanded to other beverage categories, including tea, beer, and even non-alcoholic options. The introduction of nitrogen provides a cascade of tiny bubbles, resulting in a smooth and creamy mouthfeel that sets nitro-infused beverages apart from their traditionally carbonated counterparts.
Market Dynamics:
The nitro-infused beverages market has experienced rapid growth in recent years, driven by consumer demand for unique and premium beverage experiences. The market is no longer limited to coffee shops; it has expanded to convenience stores, supermarkets, and even craft breweries. Nitro-infused cold brew coffee and tea have become mainstream, with companies capitalizing on the trend by offering ready-to-drink options in cans and bottles.
Craft Beer and Beyond:
Beyond coffee and tea, the craft beer industry has embraced the nitro trend with open arms. Nitrogen gas is used to impart a creamy and velvety texture to stouts and porters, enhancing the overall drinking experience. Additionally, the innovation doesn't stop there. Nitro-infused cocktails have gained popularity in bars and restaurants, offering a visually stunning and palate-pleasing twist to classic mixed drinks.
Consumer Appeal:
What makes nitro-infused beverages so appealing to consumers? It's all about the sensory experience. The cascading bubbles and creamy texture engage multiple senses, elevating the drinking experience to a new level. The smooth mouthfeel, enhanced aroma, and visually mesmerizing pour create a memorable moment for consumers, encouraging brand loyalty and repeat purchases.
Challenges and Opportunities:
While the nitro-infused beverage market is thriving, it is not without its challenges. Packaging considerations, shelf stability, and the need for specialized dispensing equipment pose hurdles for manufacturers. However, these challenges also present opportunities for innovation and differentiation within the market.
Looking Ahead:
As the nitro-infused beverage market continues to evolve, we can expect to see further diversification and experimentation. Emerging flavors, cross-category blends, and sustainable packaging solutions are likely to shape the future of nitro-infused beverages. The trend has transcended novelty and is now a significant player in the broader beverage landscape.
Conclusion:
The nitro-infused beverages market is a testament to the ever-evolving nature of the beverage industry. From its humble origins in coffee to its widespread adoption across various categories, nitro-infused beverages have captured the taste buds and imaginations of consumers. As beverage enthusiasts seek novel and immersive experiences, the nitro trend shows no signs of losing its effervescent appeal, promising a bubbly future for the industry.

He was committed to only use high-quality beans and a sensory roasting technique calibrated to achieve a dark, sweet, even roast. In doing so, he single-handedly helped the American consumer understand and appreciate freshly roasted, deeply satisfying craft coffee. Papa Murphy’s Menu Prices Is Peet's coffee expensive?Peet's is definitely lesser known, but still pretty high up there in terms of quality. So, it makes sense that they are also pretty high up on the list in terms of priciness. A medium Peet's latte is $4.65, significantly more costly than Dunkin' Donuts. What's so special about Peet's coffee? Our craft roasters are what make Peet's special. Our beans are roasted by hand to get you the perfect cup every time.Is Peet's coffee stronger than Starbucks?Contrary to popular belief, however, Peet's coffee, with 267 milligrams of caffeine per 16 ounce cup of medium roast, has a lower caffeine content than Starbucks' coffee (see Starbucks' caffeine content below). Van Der Linde Gang - Starbucks Order
Tumblr media
Did this yonks ago, but never posted it. Soooooooo fuck it, why not? :D
Arthur - He would like to try something new, but finds the whole process a bit overwhelming and always panics when he’s in the queue. So his go to is a plain black coffee and if he’s feeling fancy he’ll add some milk! If he’s peckish then he’ll get a breakfast sandwich. Arthur has ordered the same two things for over ten years.
Hosea - Flat white. It’s a recent choice, for many years he was a plain coffee man like Arthur, but now he appreciates the smoothness of a flat white. He tries not to have too much sugar, so would opt for a plain croissant or a banana. Dutch thinks it’s stupid to buy a banana from a coffee shop.
Dutch - He’d like to be the type to make you believe he’s into Nitro cold brews or black coffee, but truth be told Dutch dislikes the bitter taste. If someone else is ordering for him, then he’ll ask for a black coffee, but always dump in a tonne of milk and sugar. If he’s alone and free to order as he pleases, it’s a mocha and a sea salt caramel and pecan swirl. Only Hosea and Arthur know the truth about Dutch’s sweet tooth.
John - Has been banned from Starbucks by Abigail, because he’ll always get something stupidly sweet and caffeinated and she’s honestly concerned about the well being of his heart. John is a fan of the white chocolate mocha Frappuccino. Surprisingly though he’s not big on getting a sweet snack, maybe he’ll get a sandwich. Sees absolutely nothing wrong with letting Jack have a little sip of the coffee.
Abigail - Cappuccino. That’s it. Nothing fancy. Doesn’t like it iced, even in hot weather. No syrups, no special coffee. The staff don’t even have to ask her anymore what she wants, the coffee will be in her hand by the time she reaches the end of the counter! Is either getting coffee at 8am during the school run or at 3pm on a Saturday to get through Jack’s soccer practice.
Mary-Beth - Iced Hibiscus Tea, no Iced Matcha Green Tea Latte, no… um… actually a Caramel Macchiato. Mary-Beth is the worst person to go to a coffee shop, even by the time she reaches the till she hasn’t made up her mind. Usually, if she’s with Karen and Tilly, she’ll make them go first. She loves spending time in coffee shops reading or writing. Once she’s finally made up her mind as to what she wants to drink, she’ll settle down on a comfy chair with her drink and a slice of carrot cake.
Tilly - Either a Chai Tea Latte or an Iced Black Tea. She’ll drink coffee if she’s offered one, but just prefers the taste of tea and Chai Tea especially. Ideally, she would rather not go to Starbucks to get her drink, she prefers to support small, local businesses who actually make a decent Chai Tea latte! But she does have a real thing for Blueberry muffins. Does quite like the atmosphere of a coffee shop when working on her college assignments, she doesn’t like complete silence, but equally doesn’t want too much noise.
Karen - Iced Cappuccino. Even during the dead of winter Karen will still order an iced drink. Neither Tilly or Mary-Beth get it. It makes no sense. She even says, when they suggest she get a regular Cappuccino, that it tastes different. They gave up long ago trying to convince her otherwise! Opts for a cake pop and prefers chocolate.

❤ kuroo !! kuroo is that guy who jokingly insults starbucks while standing in line at starbucks, and then orders a nitro cold brew. hipster, much? anyway, he doesn’t go to starbucks often, but he’s one of those people who makes really fancy coffee at home, like with a moka pot or something, because it’s really easy to screw up (but of course he’s good at it; kuroo is good at everything).
❤ kenma !! dragon drink! he really enjoys aesthetic drinks, so he’s always excited to try something new and colorful. remember the unicorn frap? the crystal ball frap? you know, drinks that are mostly fruit and sugar and glitter? honestly, i think he’s more of an energy drink person than a coffee person, but i think he’d like the more off-beat drinks. he really just thinks they’re neat.
❤ lev !! you know, i think lev likes the seasonal drinks like the pink drink and pumpkin spice lattes. he likes trying out fun flavors, and the “get it before it’s gone!” marketing tactic totally works on him. lauds himself for how manly he is, drinking these “girly” drinks but still being “manly”, meanwhile no one’s said anything about how masculine he is or isn’t?? sir you’re holding up the line.
❤ yamamoto !! so, for the purpose of this post, my barista friend told me that they’ve had customers order a tall in a grande cup so they can add their own protein shake to it, and now i am completely convinced that this is a thing yamamoto does. he orders a tall white chocolate mocha and pours in a chocolate protein shake. i am just as upset about this as you are.
❤ yaku !! cappuccino! this man likes cappuccino! they’re cool, they’re italian, they’re better than basic lattes (in his mind), and he pictures himself in a scarf and a peacoat, sipping a fancy cappuccino and watching the rain. this is a guy who likes the cold, likes to feel fancy, and he fully believes that this is the fanciest possible coffee order.
❤ inuoka !!! not really a coffee guy! but he’s also not a fancy tea latte guy either, so he’ll probably get a hot tea. i think he likes things a little sweet, so i’m thinking he would order a peach or mint tea. he’s the first one to run to starbucks for a medicine ball, which is just citrus mint tea with honey, at the first sign of sniffles. claims it can cure anything.

ART 225 Final Blog Post: Bob’s Java Jive
Tumblr media
photo circa 1930
Located at 2102 South Tacoma Way, in Tacoma, Washington, this weird little building is not just a local attraction; it's on the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places. Originally called the Coffee Pot Restaurant, it was designed and built by Otis G. Button, a veterinarian from Tacoma, in 1927, and opened in 1929. It was one of Tacoma's first prefabricated commercial buildings, with construction beginning on the tideflats and then individual sections moved to the property and bolted together on-site. It was one of a number of quirky object-shaped buildings erected alongside highways across the United States in the 1920s, intended to fascinate, both to draw new customers into the businesses housed within, and—in a time when speed limits were not standardised and signage was infrequent—to encourage drivers to slow down in order to get a better look at the sights. Unlike the three-story gas pump station next door or the giant lemon down the street, however, this one has stayed standing for almost a century at time of writing.
❗ BULLETIN: ROBBERY The Coffee Pot was robbed for the first time in November of 1936.
A change of ownership and a change of footprint took place in 1940 when Harold Elrod purchased the property and added a dance hall to the building. Elrod also obtained a liquor license and added a bar, though it was rumoured that the place had contained a speakeasy during the last years of Prohibition, so he may have just been legitimising a well-established tradition of drinking while adding a new tradition of dancing. With more space came larger crowds, and with a dancefloor came music. This kicked off the building's long history of musical gatherings.
❗ BULLETIN: ROBBERY It was robbed again in December 1945.
❗ BULLETIN: ROBBERY Robbed again in June of 1951. The Tacoma Public Library's notes on the location indicates that "yeggs loot[ed] safes here." Fun fact: "yeggs" was a slang term for a burglar or a safecracker and is thought to come from a bank robber who used the alias John Yegg. According to a source quoted by Ray City History Blog, John was "said to have been the first safe-cracker to use nitro-glycerine as an adjunct to the prosecution of his art," and subsequent crimes began to be referred to as being perpetrated by "yeggmen." A bit of broader and more language-based history mixed in with this local stuff!
In 1955, Bob Radonich purchased the building and renamed it the Java Jive. The name was suggested by Bob's wife Lylabell, who was inspired by a popular 1940 song of the same name performed by The Ink Spots. Lyrics from the song include, "I love coffee, I love tea; I love the java jive and it loves me!" Roadside America notes that Bob "made the Jive loosely Polynesian-themed," adding a "Jungle Room" and decorating with artefacts collected during his tour in India, Madagascar, and other places white Americans found exotic at that time. He also, in true fifties fashion, kept two chimpanzees named Java and Jive in a glass cage for customers to view.  (The monkeys drew animal rights protests and other drama over the years, so Bob would eventually remove them from the establishment, sending them to "live with some friends.")
❗ BULLETIN: FIRE In April 1962, the fireplace caused a bigger fire than it was supposed to.
Until 1969, South Tacoma Way was known as highway 99, a main thoroughfare through the city, and "people would drive by and be lured in by the quirky shape of the building, then stay for a beer and the house band," as South Sound Magazine put it in their 2019 article about the place. Then interstate 5 was built, right over the Jive, and highway 99 became just another surface street. Bob's daughter Danette Staatz recalls how, after that, "there wasn’t the same kind of traffic — and it hurt business."
Despite the highway situation, by 1972, the Java Jive was world famous. According to Danielle, that year, "we were gonna paint the ceiling, and you would have thought that we were going to take a wrecking ball to the whole building. Everybody was so upset, we haven’t been able to paint the ceiling since.” Why was everyone so upset? Because the ceiling is "absolutely smothered with signatures from people all around the world who have come to visit," and is thus an important part of the building's story, to be preserved rather than painted over.

♬♪ INTERLUDE: music, culture, legacy
The city of Tacoma is ground zero for grunge music. Grunge is inherently quite political; as Wikipedia puts it,
Grunge lyrics are typically dark, nihilistic, wretched, angst-filled and anguished, often addressing themes such as social alienation, self-doubt, abuse, assault, neglect, betrayal, social isolation/emotional isolation, psychological trauma and a desire for freedom. ... [they] contained "... explicit political messages and ... questioning about ... society and how it might be changed ...". ... The topics of grunge lyrics—homelessness, suicide, rape, "broken homes, drug addiction and self-loathing"— contrasted sharply to the glam metal lyrics of Poison, which described "life in the fast lane", partying and hedonism.
Peter Andrijeski writes a bar-crawling documentation blog at seattlebars.org. When he started the blog, he began with Bob's Java Jive, which he visited in 1982. (The chimpanzees were still there at the time, living in the back bar.) Pete nods to the Jive's history as a happening spot for the local music scene: "Before they made in big, The Wailers played there several times, and The Ventures played as basically the house band.  Harold Lloyd, Clara Bow, and Bing Crosby are all said to have hung out there during the early years."
You may recognise The Ventures as the band who performed the Hawaii 5-0 theme song. They and the Fabulous Wailers, as well as the Sonics, were part of the evolution of rock 'n' roll into grunge; garage bands who became national darlings and blazed a trail that led to Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Mudhoney, Hole, the Smashing Pumpkins, the Foo Fighters...
Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk is a book comprised entirely of quotes from people who were at the centre of the mainstream explosion of punk music while it was happening, as they recall what it was like to live that maelstrom. While these people mostly came from the East Coast, their experiences are not entirely dissimilar from what was happening in the Pacific Northwest at that time. I present the following quotes without further commentary.
Ed Sanders: The problem with the hippes was that there developed a hostility within the counterculture itself, between those who had, like, the equivalent of a trust fund versus those who had to live by their wits. It's true, for instance, that blacks were somewhat resentful of the hippies by the Summer of Love, 1967, because their perception was that these kids were drawing paisley swirls on their Sam Flax writing pads, burning incense, and taking acid, but those kids could get out of there any time they wanted to. ... Whereas someone who was raised in a project on Columbia Street and was hanging out on the edge of Tompkins Square Park can't escape. ... They're trapped. So there developed another kind of lumpen hippie, who really came from an abused childhood—from parents that hated them, from parents that threw them out. ... And those kids fermented into a kind of hostile street person. Punk types.
Wayne Kramer: Any time you take a political stance, especially when you start throwing around violent political rhetoric, you're guaranteed a violent reaction from the powers that be. There was an attitude that prevailed in the Detroit area, amongst parents, teachers, policemen, and prosecutors: "When is somebody gonna do something about the [band Motor City 5]? We cannot allow them to say what they're saying!" We were telling people at our shows to smoke reefer, to burn their bras, to fuck in the streets—it wasn't just a matter of "Well, they were a little too wild for the record industry," which we were, but it went beyond that. Peace and love worked in the realm of the music business, but once you went beyond that, to revolution... that's bad.
Dennis Thompson: Nixon and the smart boys in the green room back in the brain trust sat down and said, "Here's the easiest way to handle this damn thing. Just take away their party favors." The government figured it out. It was obvious. "These people do pot and hash and psychedelics and then they get revolutionary, and they come up with all these new ideas like 'Hey, let's change this world. And let's eliminate these fascist politicians!' Well, the smartest thing to do is give them what's been in the ghettos for a long time because that's been working pretty good there." All of a sudden all you can find anywhere you go is heroin. It's cheap, and there it is. So heroin became the next drug of choice, mainly because you couldn't buy a kilo of pot to save your soul.
In 1980, the future singer and guitarist for Girl Trouble met at Bob’s Java Jive. They would go on to become local legends. Bon Von Wheelie, Girl Trouble’s drummer, reflected on being a punk in the 80s during an interview for Northwest Music Scene: "Since Tacoma was a working-class town the people here weren’t really open to anything new, including punk rock hairdos and clothing. It is almost unbelievable to think about that now but for some reason it made people so mad they’d go after anybody who dared to look even a little out of the norm (which was baggy flare jeans and feathered hair). Having tight pants and a short haircut could get you in a fight faster than anything."
Nirvana didn't play at Bob's Java Jive, but they did hang out there in the mid to late 80s, and it was at a different venue in Tacoma that they first performed under the name "Nirvana." A local legend is that the band asked Bob if they could play a set at the Jive, but Bob didn't like their sound and he turned them down. Nirvana's bassist Krist Novoselic says that's an urban myth.
Unlike Nirvana, Bobby Floyd Radonich, the owner's son, was a frequent performer at the Jive. He was said to be an incredibly talented piano player, and to have a thousand songs memorised to play any time a customer made a request. The Tacoma News Tribune also wrote an article in 1983 about Bobby Floyd's presence at the piano bench, saying in the headline that the "Java Jive comes alive when [he] plays." Pete said on his bar crawling blog that on the night he was there, "Maestro" Bobby Floyd "seemed to play mostly 70s television themes, mixed in with Beatles covers and local high school fight songs." Pete called the bar and his experience at it "epic."

photo of the Jive’s menu from 1990, shared on their facebook page
The 1990 film “I Love You To Death” was filmed entirely in Tacoma, and features a scene inside Bob's Java Jive. Keanu Reeves plays alongside William Hurt as pothead cousins and would-be hitmen who are hired to kill a cheating husband; the deal is struck at a table in the Java Jive. South Sound Magazine notes, "You can play pool at the same pool table that Reeves did. He [allegedly] offered to buy the coffee pot building for $1 million and move it to Hawaii. [Bob] turned the offer down." (This urban myth may have been sparked by the fact that Bob later put the Java Jive up for sale for $1 million, despite the property and building being worth much less at the time. There were no takers, so he kept the place.) The Java Jive was also featured in “Say Anything” and “Three Fugitives” the year before, and a decade later it would appear in “Ten Things I Hate About You.”
By 1995, Bob was in his late seventies and health was failing, so his daughter Danette took over the Jive.
❗ BULLETIN: FIRE Another fire in April of 1996 caused some amount of damage and caused the Java Jive to be shut down for a time.
❗ BULLETIN: ... wait never mind In 1998, there was a fire in the apartment complex behind the Jive, but the building itself escaped the blaze this time! Whew!
Tumblr media
In July of 1999, Teddy Haggarty and Dan Richholt painted the above mural.
❗ BULLETIN: FINANCIAL TROUBLES In July of 2002, Danette spoke to the Tacoma Daily Index about the financial struggles she and her husband were facing due to lack of patronage. She promoted the event they were organising called The Big Hoopla to try to raise funds to keep the place open, with "dancers, live music, a juke box, pool, pinball and darts, as well as hot dogs and pop." Danette did not end up losing the Jive that year, probably in large part due to the event and the news coverage reminding Tacomans about their quirky little landmark and bringing in funding both from the event and from the likely boost in general patronage. Later that year, Bob Radonich died at 83 years old, with the famous coffee pot building still in the family.
2011 Yelp review: "This is the last Grit City hangout that hasn't been gutted and made into a fancy hangout for all the new transplant yuppies. Great vintage atmosphere and music venue. No hard booze here folks, just straight up beer and wine. Worth the visit."
2013 Yelp review: "the java jive is the most tacoma place in tacoma. a landmark, a tradition, and practically all that remains of our cultural past. built as a dine & dance joint in the 20s, then morphed into a rock club for the nascent garage/punk scene in the early 60s (think the sonics and the wailers), this roadside attraction is shaped like a giant coffee pot and like alice's wonderland, holds a mysterious variety of spaces inside. come here for a cheap pitcher of coors and a "jungle burger": a basic frisko freeze-style cheeseburger that's absolutely tasty and cooked to order. karaoke most nights, and occasional live music with a dance floor. just a great hang."

couple of my favourite show posters from facebook, circa 2014
In 2016 Huck Magazine added a video called Misfit City to their Huck Across America series on YouTube. This installment focussed on the “Grit City” music scene, with a huge showcasing of inclusive punkiness, and featuring a familiar little coffee pot shaped venue. In it, Hozen member Hozi says, "Tacoma is a misfit city, you know... I think that a lot of people feel comfortable to be themselves here in a way that you wouldn't necessarily feel in Seattle or Olympia because those places have so much of an identity. Here, you just... are who you are."
2016 show posters:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(2016 was recognised on the facebook page as a "shitty year")
The Jive has an overall rating of 4.5 stars on Yelp (as of December 2022). A lot of the naysayers seem to be disappointed that the coffee pot building was not a coffee shop (including one tourist who pulled over to take photos and then upon seeing the hand-scrawled sign on the front door decided not to go inside... but still left a three-star review based on their vague disappointment). Or that the dive bar atmosphere was not for them, to which I say: don't judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree. There are, however, quite a few comments about the state of the place around 2008–2015, with a handful of "this place used to be better" sentiments from people who had fond memories but seemed upset at the state of the place around that time. Luckily, the owners have done major renovations since then!
In 2019 they made a slew of announcements on facebook: they had installed a new karaoke sound system, acquired new arcade games ("a new dart machine that works!" and a new pinball machine), had the pool tables and the game area's carpet redone, bought a pretzel oven and hot dog steamer, installed security cameras for the first time to surveil the parking lot and surrounding area. Later that year, they got their wn library card! The Tacoma Public Library printed special edition library cards—a batch of only 3000—featuring the coffee pot building in its youth, before it had the colourful paint job and additional structure.
By this time, even non-natives were charmed by the place!
2019 Yelp review from a Kent resident: "I was very pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoy this place. Great karaoke, awesome people, wonderful atmosphere. I feel like this is a place where everyone is welcome and accepted which means a whole lot to me. I will most definitely be back and would absolutely recommend this spot to my friends!"
Tumblr media
mural at the railroad bridge at 66th and south tacoma way, taken in 2019
❗ BULLETIN: GLOBAL PANDEMIC In March of 2020, the world stopped for a bit.
Renovations continued after the lockdowns. In June 2021 the exterior was repainted by Honest Guys Painting. Also around this time, Darren Blacketer and Chris Tipton were restoring Teddy Haggarty's murals on the extension of the building. In the summer of 2022 they installed a beer garden outside so that people could social distance and/or enjoy the warmth and sunshine. They even had a couple of bands play sets on the patio, and set things up for an outdoor open mic.
For a long time there was live music at the Jive every Saturday. Shows were all $5 as late as 2018, but by 2022 there are "monthly live music event[s]" and the price was usually $10 (though some shows cost less, and some were free). Between the pandemic and "den mother" Jenna Shrenk suffering a family loss that interfered with her gig-booking duties, the Jive has lost a bit of its presence in the music scene as a hot venue for local sound. These days it’s more of a karaoke/comedy bar, which frankly fits the vibe that Tacoma has going now. On Tuesdays there's open mic for poetry, singing, guitar or keys etc., and Bob's Comedy Jive is a weekly open mic comedy event on Thursdays.
2022 Yelp review: "The Java Jive is alive and well! Getting better every week. Cleaner, better beverage offerings while still keeping true to its gitchy legacy. Better beverages, better bathrooms!, better hours, better beer garden, better parking, better lighting, yet still the Java Jive!"
Bon Henderson said during her Tacoma News Tribune interview in 2021,
The people and stories [in Tacoma] are disappearing, brick by brick. I was born here. Things weren't perfect, and certainly not politically correct, and it was a tough town, but you learned to love all that. I want people moving here to know what Tacoma was all about. If we lose places like the Java Jive, they will never know. And that would be a damn shame.
Someone on Yelp called it "more like Bob's Java DIVE," and while that was probably meant to be an insult, it's accurate. The place is a dive. But that's kind of the point. This building and its history seem to emanate punk and grit and weirdness. It's been through hell, it's got a very mixed reputation, it's reinvented itself a few times, but for the most part these days it just kind of is what it is, the culmination of its history.
And if you're looking for coffee you can always go next door to KD'z Espresso shack...
Tumblr media
PSYCH, IT'S CLOSED.
(Man, am I disappointed by the lack of coffee shops in this area!)
Bob’s Java Jive is currently open from 4pm to 2am, seven days a week.

What Each Member of the Bat Family Orders at Starbucks Because this hasn't been done before. From the lense of someone who was a Partner for 3 years.
Dick
Either get something super healthy like a black iced Americano or goes for High School Girl caramel frappucino with 1.5 inches of Caramel.
The man is usually coming into starbucks in a hurry but is always very polite. Has low-key flirted with every partner in the store.
He lives off of those Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Perfect Bars. But generally tries not to spend too much money at Starbucks.
If he does get a breakfast sandwich it's the Bacon Gouda.
Barbara
Very Iced Matcha Green Tea or London Fog vibes.
But her no-stop go to drink is a dirty chai with blonde espresso and one pump of Mocha.
Pre-pandemic Barbara would be the person who sits at the cafe working on her laptop, berating the whole brood for their performances on the previous night's trips.
Doesn't eat the food at starbucks UNLESS it's the holidays and she hoards Cranberry Bliss Bars like some type of feral goblin.
Jason
Any dark roast he can get on the machine (usually French roast from my store but he likes Italian better) or just a plain Nitro Cold Brew. Has unironically ordered the pink drink on occasion. Always asks for extra ice in his iced drinks.
He gives the energy that he's the one who knows everyone's names and is super polite but once people know he's the Red Hood everyone's just like 'yeah he gave off those vibes. He looked like he was going to snap my neck when I accidentally put Pumpkin spice in his Nitro but he still smiled and apologized profusely and insisted he'd take it.'
Sits in the cafe and reads. For hours on end. But never at a consistent time. Likes to come and harass Barbara occasionally.
Gets a Double-Smoked Bacon and puts a pack of Sriracha on it every time. And I mean every single time he comes in.
Tim
He likes Peet's better but gets either a red eye with extra shots or a Venti cold Brew with 6 packs of Stevia.
He swears it isn't about the caffeine but it's totally about the caffeine.
Always in and out quicky but will come back multiple times a day. Has rewards to use but always forgets them. Ends up saving them for Jason or Cass.
Gets the Taco Bell breakfast from the Taco Bell a block away because it's 8x better than anything at a Starbucks. Or he gets the Ham and Swiss Croissant.
Stephanie
Venti Vanilla Latte extra hot with an extra shot, short pull, skim milk. Or unironically a PSL. But ALWAYS with a pump of vanilla.
Always comes into the store with at least one other member of the Bat Family. Never EVER comes in alone. Always ends up snort laughing at one of the boys. Tries to convince either Damian or Jason to try to swallow a whole thing of cinnamon.
Unironically gets the salads and food boxes from the display. And always gets one every time she comes. Her favorite is the Chicken Quinoa bowl.
Go-to breakfast is the Bacon Guyrere Sous Vide egg bites.
Cassandra
She always comes in and tries something new! Even if she doesn't like what she got she always tries to find some way to analyze and experience the taste and flavor of the drink. Her favorite is still a blended Dragon Drink with whipped cream.
Everyone at the store loves her because her smile radiates through the whole store. She's like Jason in the sense that she's always super polite and super smiley but deep down everyone fears her. When the two come into the store together everyone is on edge but no one does anything less than smile.
Is on a mission to experience everything their is to life and that means experiencing everything once. She loves receiving recomendations from baristas and loves to hear what we have to think on certain beverages.
Her favorite breakfast item is an oatmeal cup with the nuts and chocolate chips.
Damian
When he's with his family? Almond Milk Hot Chocolate with a pump of peppermint. (He's "not supposed" to have caffeine yet) when he's alone? A grande Nitro cold Brew with Coconut milk and yet again, a pump of peppermint.
Brat. Just a brat. He's kind enough when paying and will usually take his drink without saying anything but if you mess up his drink he will make a scene.
Usually comes in with Jon and tries to get Jon into coffee. He hates it. But will always be Jon's sugar bestie and buy all of his drinks.
Doesn't like to eat the food at Starbucks. But when he does he gets an Almond Croissant.
Duke
Likes Dunkin better but will still go if he's with family. Usually gets a grande iced coffee with an extra pump of classic.
Is always super polite and very friendly to staff. Tries new seasonal items with Cass.
Is usually in and out pretty quickly non because he doesn't like the people or the atmosphere. He just is an in-and-out guy when it comes to fast food (No not the burger chain you west coast savages)
Ironically he really enjoys the spinach tomato feta wrap. Has given Tim money to buy one for him.
Bruce
Doesn't really like Starbucks but will go if his children ask him to come with him. Unironically likes Pike Roast and will drink it black because he's a monster.
Everything is too sugary for Bruce. He physically probably couldn't stand the menu at a Starbucks.
Always strikes up casual conversation with the partners and likes to secretly slide benjamin's in the tip jar. Even if the service was subpar.
He loved the Spicy Chorizo sandwich and way really sad when they got rid of it.
Alfred
Mildly pissed at all of his children for taking the equivalent of McDonalds for coffee over his food.
Refuses to give a red cent of his money to that chain.
Barbara bought him a London Fog one time and he begrudgingly admitted it was tolerable then proceeded to make Barbara one that was 80x better.

UK Coffee Market: Forthcoming Trends and Share Analysis by 2030
Tumblr media
As coffee consumption has been gradually increasing, the UK coffee market has seen significant expansion in recent years. This trend has been greatly influenced by coffee shop culture, which has led to the success of both independent specialty coffee shops and large chains. The growing demand for premium, ethically sourced coffee beans and attention to brewing techniques is a result of consumers' growing interest in specialty coffee.
The COVID-19 pandemic affected the business, forcing coffee shops to increase home coffee consumption while adjusting to takeout and delivery choices. The change from traditional tea consumption to a coffee-centric lifestyle is what defines the UK coffee market.
Although the industry is dominated by chains of coffee shops like Costa Coffee, Starbucks, and Caffè Nero, specialty coffee and artisanal brewing techniques are becoming more and more popular. For customers, sustainability and ethical sourcing are now also essential factors. The UK coffee market is still growing and adapting to the tastes of its customers, even in the face of the pandemic's obstacles.

Note
Do you like coffee? If so, how do you prepare it? If not, what's your beverage of choice?
ahhhhh! thanks for the question, my friend!
love, love, love coffee!
this is partially because i worked as a barista/bartender for about 11 years, and because i've always liked trying new blends and coffee shops in my spare time.
since i prefer my coffee cold, i've been obsessed with cold brew these last few years - it's so much smoother than iced coffee, and if the place offers it as a nitro pour, guh, i'm over the moon.
with at home coffee i use an aeropress to make my "espresso", then pour that over some sweetener and oat milk, with a cluster of iced coffee ice cubes as the chiller to round it all off.
however, when i'm not looking for that high octane burst of caffeine, i like to whisk up some matcha and make an iced green tea latte.
oh, and i also drink the devil's diet coke :x
