Hello followers, Happy Halloween! I have a small update for you all. After a long and painful production process, the Astarion design I commissioned from CryMoreBrand is finally available as pins, you can find them on Shopify and Etsy.

I'm hard at work fulfilling the Pride Angels campaign. I was hoping to release the Pride Angels leftovers later this month but instead I will wait until the December update to list them. My shop will be open for only a few days in December so be ready to grab them while you can. I'm also planning to run a holiday sale in December so you can look forward to that.

Onto other news: the Blood & Holy Water campaign is now underway. If you're a fan of angels or vampires I hope you'll check it out. And be sure to take a look at the other Mementos Mori campaigns, there's lots of spooky pins and freebies to be had.

Lastly, I will be vending at the SJMade Holiday Fair. It is November 29-30, 11AM to 6PM PST at the Santa Clara Convention Center. I'll have lots of pins, stickers, keychains, and more for sale at discounted convention prices. As well as the ever-popular box of pick-your-own seconds pins. While the chance of a heated political discussion at your Thanksgiving table might be extra high this year, the chance of getting COVID at your family gathering is lower than it has been in the past several years.

That’s even with millions of Californians expected to travel for the holiday.

“The bottom line is that we’re in a very, very good place at this moment,” said Dr. John Swartzberg, clinical professor emeritus of infectious diseases and vaccinology at UC Berkeley.

Going into the fifth year of post-COVID Thanksgiving festivities, levels of the virus are low statewide, and around most of the country. Santa Clara County’s wastewater testing, which measures levels of the virus in local sewer sheds, shows the virus at low levels across the county.

Data from California’s public health department shows “RSV and influenza activity are low but increasing” and “COVID-19 is currently low in California,” according to data through November 16.

As of this fall, California public health officials publish data on COVID, along with flu and RSV, in weekly respiratory virus updates. The update from the week before Thanksgiving shows the test positivity rates for influenza and RSV have started to rise, while COVID test positivity, hospitalizations and deaths remain low.

“We went through a really late summer wave, and that really got a lot of Americans immunized,” Swartzberg noted, as a possible explanation for why COVID has yet to start surging this winter, typically a season when rates are high. In past winters, COVID started to surge in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving.

While rates are low now, the threat of COVID has hardly disappeared. While the risk has diminished, it still takes a devastating toll, killing Californians every day. Since June 30 of this year, the beginning of the respiratory virus season, 1,691 Californians have died from COVID. In the same time, 49 have died from influenza, and another 10 have died from RSV.

And while COVID was once seen as less of a threat to young children than other respiratory illnesses, it has accounted for three pediatric deaths so far this season. Meanwhile, one pediatric death has been attributed to flu in the first four and a half months since the respiratory virus season began.

The continued deadly threat of the virus is why public health officials continue to prioritize vaccination, especially for the most vulnerable, those most likely to have a bad outcome.

But given rising skepticism around the COVID vaccine, many public health agencies are taking a different approach to encouraging people to get a shot. And those new approaches might be working this year, with vaccination rates up around the country compared to the same time the year before. But there is lots of progress to be made, said Swartzberg, adding that annual flu vaccine uptake is still much higher than for the COVID vaccine.

“Americans have it sort of backwards” Swartzberg said. “There are many more [Americans] immunized against influenza than COVID, yet COVID is a much more serious disease.”

As of this week, 18% of eligible people in Santa Clara County had received an updated COVID vaccine, about twice the statewide vaccination rate of 9.6%. But 30% of eligible residents in the county have received a flu vaccine this year.

”Even though our rates are low, we are still doing better than last year,” Dr. Sara Cody, the Santa Clara County health officer, said last week, during a panel hosted by the Big Cities Health Coalition, adding that she and her agency are still looking for new strategies to encourage vaccination. “Our strategies are changing away from telling and more to listening and understanding,” she said.

Illustrated Maps: Different Styles, Approaches & Uses

Rod Hunt is a London, UK based map illustrator specialising in detailed illustrated isometric maps and plans for school campuses, theme parks, events, parks and cities.

Style, Approach and Uses of Illustrated Maps

With 30 years experience as an illustrated map designer he’s created maps for clients worldwide including schools, universities, sporting events, theme parks, tourism brands and more. His love of detailed maps was fuelled by theme park and tourist attraction maps from his childhood. Rod's own maps are usually very detailed adding layers of humour and interest often populated with little characters and easter eggs to entertain the viewers as well as inform. Clarity of navigation is essential ahead of the detail, the London Underground Map is great example of distilling a map down to its essential elements by simplifying the geography, it’s often on Rod's mind when working on a visual approach for a new map project.

In this article Rod showcases his various styles and ways of executing an illustrated map suitable for a client's needs. What do you need from an illustrated or pictorial map, is it ease of use as a navigational tool with geographic accuracy, exciting marketing images or a mixture of both? A simpler graphic map or levels of detail and complexity? It's important to understand how the map will be used when briefing a map illustrator to ensure it meets the requirements of its users.

Illustrated Theme Park and Tourist Attraction Maps

Creating a fun and engaging map for your theme park or tourist attraction is very important as it gives it excitement beyond a functional navigational tool becoming a key marketing promotion to instil excitement to potential visitors.

Rod Hunt illustrated the Visitors Map for Chessington World of Adventures Theme Park. The key aims were to simplify the complex layout of the park to create an accurate and easy navigation tool for visitors, to be colourful, fun and appealing to the target family audience and to be easily updatable for the inclusion of future rides and attractions. The rides and attractions were illustrated in a fun and detailed way playing with scale while keeping a level of accurate depiction.

Illustrated Property Development Maps

Rod was commissioned to visualise the different phases of a new properly development for an advertising campaign for Bhartiya City outside Bangalore, India. The property development required a detailed 3D illustrated map using isometric perspective as a key visual to promote the development to potential residents and businesses. Rod worked from a huge amount of architectural drawings of the buildings, 3D renders and site plans of the upcoming phases to create a playful, colourful, green and vibrant place to live and work. Another more architectural approach can be seen in his Battersea Power Station Development Map which gives a neighbourhood overview of the current and upcoming phases of the multi-billion Pound development in London that surrounds Battersea Power Station.

Illustrated Campus Maps and Site Plans for Schools, Colleges and Universities

Schools, colleges and universities can have various needs from an illustrated map or plan, a navigational tool, overview of the campus buildings or a key showcase of facilities. With Rod's illustrated campus site map for Santa Clara University the aim was to highlight some of the significant ways that the campus was transformed with new buildings and facilities built over the last two decades. A simper approach was chosen to depict the campus with a more graphic and simplified style.

Rod's Cheltenham College Prep School Campus Map took a different route with more detail and exaggerated depictions of the buildings and cutaway's to show interiors. There was also an added layer of Where's Waldo / Wally? style search and find for extra interest and excitement. The map illustration was used as a key marketing tool and an interactive page on the schools website to showcase the superb facilities of the school.

Detailed City Map Illustration

Rod Hunt was commissioned to create a detailed and expansive illustrated city map of the historic city of Jodhpur for The JDH, an Urban Regeneration Project that aims to restore the Walled City of Jodhpur to its former glory, breathing new life into its invaluable landmarks and livelihoods. The illustrated map of this ancient city needed to capture a sense of fantasy and magical reality that included Jodhpur's key landmarks and monuments, main street routes as well as elements of Jodhpur's rich culture, architecture and landscape.

Illustrated Tourist Maps of Landmarks

Another approach is a mixture of a simpler graphic background with highly rendered accurate illustrations of buildings and landmarks like in Rod's illustrated map of 101 sites in New York for Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises. Their aim was to show the different landmarks, buildings, monuments, neighbourhoods and attractions a customer can see from their various New York cruise routes around Manhattan. Here he creates an overview of landmarks in New York with less emphasis on the maps use as a navigational tool. Highly rendered buildings and landmarks feature in the approximate location with simpler graphic background, playing with scale to enhance impact and clarity.

Sports and Entertainment Event Maps

The Saudi Arabian e-prix and event map needed to convey the overall site the sporting event for use as a navigational tool and marketing tool. The brief was to create a fun, detailed and engaging 'Disneyland' style theme park map illustration showing the race circuit, wider festival site, hospitality and facilities on offer across the three days of the Formula E event with live music from international artists, entertainment, cultural activities and gripping city street racing. A mixture of clear routes for navigation was mixed with detailed depictions of the site features.

A more focused approach was required for Time Out's 50th Birthday Party Event Map Illustration, a one night event at a small intimate site in Granary Square King's Cross. Rod went into great detail for each of the areas, including live music stages, comedy stage, hospitality and facilities to care an exciting overview of the event. The map illustration was used as a key marketing tool in the run up to the night.

Print company 1st Byte wanted to create an exploded view building virtual tour map to show customers the company's extensive print and finishing facilities. Rod illustrated an exploded cutaway building illustration that showed the company at work. The image was used an an interactive tour showing each floor in detail with key printing machinery shown in detail.

Illustrated Event Maps for Trade Shows and Exhibitions

Rod Hunt created a detailed and fun exhibition and event map illustration for the Top Gear Live show at Excel London, in the style of his bestselling Top Gear Where's Stig? search and find book. The map needed to show the indoor racing track, Live Action Arena plus a recreation of the Top Gear studio, special tributes to Top Gear's greatest challenges and some of the more creative and famous machinery from the TV show. The illustration was used as a key marketing image to promote the event.

1951 Studebaker Woodie - Never Slow Down - StreetRodder

Body

Gray Baskerville accurately described Dennis Varni as "a hot rodder's hot rodder." Since buying a '31 Model A as a teenager in the late '50s, Dennis doesn't seem to have slowed down ever. He has amassed a phenomenal stable of collector cars, trucks, vintage race cars, and motorcycles of practically every type, including the '29 Model A roadster built by Boyd Coddington that was named America's Most Beautiful Roadster in 1992. He has participated in motorsports all over the world, including numerous trips to Mexico to race in the famous La Carrera Panamericana, to South Africa for the South African Rally Championship, and to the Bonneville Salt Flats, right here in the U.S., where he drove his Falconer L6-powered "Speed Nymph" streamliner just shy of 350 mph.

Dennis has more checks on his hot rodding bucket list than just about anybody we know. So did you really expect his latest street rod to be something ordinary?

Body Bottom

Any 1951 Studebaker woodie custom could be considered out of the ordinary (how many can you think of?), but Dennis, builder Curt Hill, and the people who had previously helped create this custom woodie, have taken the '51 to an extraordinary level.

This car was under construction when Dennis made the winning bid for it at the auction of the late Joe MacPherson's prized collection. The unfinished project had been started by Doug Carr of Woodn' Carr. It had already been transformed from a sedan to a fastback (based on Thom Taylor's design sketches) and was already a woodie. The top was chopped 2-1/2 inches, and the rear fenders were stretched 18 inches and treated to custom taillight lenses and bezels. The '37 Ford headlights were installed by Steve Davis, who had done some of the early fabrication on the car.

Such an unusual car deserved an equally unique engine. For a while, Dennis considered dropping in a Cadillac engine to create his own version of the Studillac, the Cadillac-powered Stude coupes custom-built in the mid '50s. Then he remembered the one-of-a-kind induction system he'd found at a swap meet decades ago. The mechanical fuel injection system, with wild-looking air bodies, was a prototype created by Propulsion Development Laboratories in the '50s. Everybody had seen it on the cover of Hot Rod magazine in 1959 and nobody had seen it since. The setup is finally in service, feeding a Ford 427 FE engine. Dan Brewer in Torrance, California, did the assembly on the engine and converted the PDL mechanical injection to work with a Hilborn electronic system hidden under the manifold. Edelbrock cylinder heads are topped with Edsel valve covers to replicate the look engine on Hot Rod's cover. The new combination produced 410 hp on the dyno. An adapter fits the Ford to a GM 700-R4 transmission. This is one of the rarest, most unusual engines you'll find in a hot rod, but Dennis is almost nonchalant about it. "Nobody puts Edsels in Studebakers," is what he said.

The interior was entrusted to Sid Chavers in Santa Clara, California. Chavers built custom bucket seats and covered them in tan leather with gray-toned fur inserts. No need to replace the '51 Studebaker dash, so Redline Gauge Works restored the appearance of the factory gauges and updated the internals. A reproduction '54 Stude steering wheel came from Shrock Brothers, which specializes in repro Studebaker parts. Lucky 7 Customs gave the wheel and column their wood grain paint. The perfect accessory to the interior is the set of vintage alligator-grain luggage in the rear deck area, which Dennis found in an antique store in Washington.

The end result is a genuinely unique custom that would probably hover around the top of most people's lists of great Studebakers, great woodies, and great customs.

From the moment Little People, Big World premiered on TLC in 2006, the Roloffs were fan favorites, even when accusations arose that the "reality" show was anything but. Jacob Roloff, the youngest member of the Roloff family household, was born on January 17, 1997. Jacob left Little People, Big World when he reportedly opted out of his contract in 2016.

Most people don't know the bizarre backstory of Chris Cardamone and his time on Little People, Big World. Even when Jacob just made the announcement in 2020, super fans of the show suspected that Cardamone had a weird and twisted past with both the family and the show.

Chris joined Little People, Big World as the executive field producer in 2007, and just one year later, on October 20, 2008, he was arrested in Santa Clara, California, for crimes against children.
