Testimonials:
I was able to close a deal on my first corporate sale that included six works. What I learned in Boot Camp helped me to make sure I considered all of the details, costs, and contract items very carefully. It was my most successful transaction ever and I was able to negotiate it from start to finish without wavering on terms. The Boot Camp not only gave me needed advice but it also built confidence. Thank you NYFA, NYSCA, and ARTS Council. - Debb VanDelinder, Visual Artist, 2018 NYSCA/NYFA Artist As Entrepreneur Boot Camp Program presented by The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes
The NYSCA/NYFA Artist as Entrepreneur Boot Camp was such a phenomenal experience. Not only was the information useful, but the time spent communing with other artists was invaluable. Seldom do we artists (especially those of us who are emerging professionals) get the opportunity to take a step back and reflect on where we are, what we are doing, and where we are going, and this was exactly that. It was a broad-ranging experience, from driving up with a group of ladies I had just met and ending up feeling like it was a girls' trip with them, to assessing where I am with my social media presence; to contemplating my options to form a business/nonprofit entity; to dining with artists in various disciplines and feeling like I am not the only one dealing with what I am dealing with, it was amazing. It was an honor to be there and it renewed my own commitment to developing my art as my full-time work. - Justina Kamiel Grayman, Ph.D.; Dance Film, Short Film, Choreography, Live Experiences; 2018 NYSCA/NYFA Artist As Entrepreneur Boot Camp Program presented by Lake Placid Center for the Arts
I committed to my career status change from SAHM to making Cabin Creek Stitchery an official business. I made a personal goal to interact more with like-minded adults and I'm traveling in New York with workshops, retreats, and adult classes I'm offering in quilting education! I'm appreciative of the support and encouragement of your program. - Dawn Klotzko, Textile Artist, 2018 NYSCA/NYFA Artist As Entrepreneur Boot Camp Program presented by Lake Placid Center for the Arts

Announcing | Keep NYS Creating Project Grant Recipients

The Keep NYS Creating program is helping to support 42 projects from across New York State.
New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA), in partnership with New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), is proud to announce the recipients of the Keep NYS Creating Project Grant. The program was established to help artists in Western New York, Finger Lakes, Southern Tier, Central New York, North Country, Mohawk Valley, Capital District, Mid-Hudson, and Long Island continue their creative projects that have been interrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is made possible by NYSCA, with the support of the National Endowment for the Arts.
The Keep NYS Creating Project Grant was open to artists who previously applied to the NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship program in 2018, 2019, and/or 2020 who work in the categories of Architecture/Environmental Structures/Design, Choreography, Craft/Sculpture, Digital/Electronic Arts, Fiction, Folk/Traditional Arts, Interdisciplinary Work, Music/Sound, Nonfiction Literature, Painting, Photography, Playwriting/Screenwriting, Poetry, Printmaking/Drawing/Book Arts, and/or Video/Film.
The grant will enable 2D, 3D, and installation artist Elisa Pritzker (Mid-Hudson) to design a print a full color catalog of an installation that was unveiled ABClatino Art Space in Poughkeepsie, NY in March 2020 and has since gone unseen due to COVID-19. It will enable poet Jacob Rakovan (Finger Lakes) to perform a cycle of poems that were recently awarded the Thornwillow Press Patron’s Prize, bringing the work to new audiences. Painter Suzanne Onodera (Southern Tier) will use the grant to complete a project that illustrates the emotional landscape of the paternal and maternal sides of her Japanese American family who were and were not incarcerated under Executive Order 9066 during World War II.
For Onodera, receiving the Keep NYS Creating Project Grant “feels as though you can take that extra mile in the pursuit of your work, that someone out there believes in your vision, and most importantly: that you can keep creating.”

Apply Now | Fiscal Sponsorship for New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) Grants

Apply for an Out-of-Cycle Review by Tuesday, February 11.
Artists and non-profit organizations in New York State, did you know that funding from The New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) can give you a leg up on making your artist project a reality? There’s one key step you need to take in order to be eligible as an individual artist: securing a fiscal sponsor. NYFA accepts no-fee applications quarterly for its Fiscal Sponsorship program, and conducts Out-of-Cycle Reviews on an ongoing basis to accommodate all timelines, including deadlines for NYSCA.
What is NYSCA? The New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) is dedicated to providing New York State-based artists and arts organizations the resources to develop their work and connect with the public. Grantmaking is central to this mission and in FY2019, it awarded $51M to 2,400 organizations through direct grants and regrants. New York State-based arts organizations and individual artists working in the visual, media, and performing arts can apply for grant funding on an annual basis.
How do I know if I qualify? Check out the FY2021 Grant Guidelines. There are 15 different funding programs and each program has a different set of guidelines. The grant is open to New York State residents with projects occurring within the state, and you must be a pre-qualified nonprofit organization or have a fiscal sponsor in order to apply. Individual artists should review the Individual Artist program guidelines.
What is Fiscal Sponsorship? A fiscal sponsor is required to apply for the Individual Artist NYSCA grants. NYFA Fiscal Sponsorship is a fundraising and administrative tool available to U.S.-based artists and arts organizations in all disciplines. Sponsorship allows you to use NYFA’s 501c3 charitable status to apply for grants and corporate sponsorship, and offer donors the incentive of a tax deduction.
How does Out-of-Cycle Review work? In order to help meet this deadline, NYFA Fiscal Sponsorship offers an expedited Out-of-Cycle Review application. There is a $175 administrative fee for applications and a turnaround period of two weeks. Fiscal sponsorship status must be acquired before applying to the NYSCA grant for many categories; please read the guidelines carefully. Email our team at [email protected] with questions.
If you want to apply for NYSCA’s funding, you must apply for an Out-of-Cycle Review with NYFA Fiscal Sponsorship by Tuesday, February 11. Click one of the links below to apply:

Introducing | NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship Program Recipients and Finalists

NYFA has awarded $623,000 to 89 New York State artists.
The New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) has announced the recipients and finalists of the NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship program, which it has administered for the past 32 years with leadership support from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA). The organization has awarded a total of $623,000 to 89 artists throughout New York State in the following disciplines: Fiction, Folk/Traditional Arts, Interdisciplinary Work, Painting, and Video/Film. This year’s recipients range in age between 26 and 77. Fifteen finalists, who do not receive a cash award, but benefit from a range of other NYFA services, were also announced. A complete list of the Fellows and Finalists follows.
The NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship Program makes unrestricted cash grants of $7,000 to artists working in 15 disciplines, awarding five per year on a triennial basis. The program is highly competitive and this year’s recipients and finalists were selected by discipline-specific peer panels from an applicant pool of 3,071. Since it was launched in 1985, the program has awarded over $31 million to more than 4,500 artists.

“Artists deepen humanity and help us to understand the world and each other through their work,” said Michael L. Royce, Executive Director, NYFA. “We’re proud to collaborate with NYSCA to offer unrestricted grants to artists of all disciplines across New York State to support their artistic visions,” he added.
“We recognize that at the heart of the arts is the individual artist,” said Mara Manus, Executive Director of the New York State Council on the Arts. “These grants provide artists in a multitude of disciplines with financial support so they can take risks and flourish in their work, fueling the creative capital of New York.”
Sejal Shah, a Fellow in Fiction from Rochester, NY, reflected on the award saying: “Receiving the NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship means it is possible for me to teach less, worry (a little) less, and write more. It is allowing me to focus on the big picture and helps me to believe that what I am doing has value to someone other than me. As an artist, I feel freer to take risks with my work, to experiment, and to continue to write about gender, race, silence, and speech.”
Kim Brandt, a Fellow in Interdisciplinary Work from Queens, NY, shared the following about her fellowship: “Receiving a NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship is a real gift—both a vote of confidence and a sigh of relief. On a practical level, it supports a continued commitment to my work by easing the financial burdens of its costs. For a contained stretch of time, I can pay for studio space and materials, take time away from my jobs, and travel for a residency with less worry and reduced stress. Yet to have my work recognized and acknowledged by NYFA and their panelist of arts professionals, peers, and colleagues, to be included in a roster of previous awardees whose work I’ve long admired and respected—this is the deeply meaningful support that doesn't run out once the last penny is spent. This kind of support feeds and fuels long past the fellowship period, and its value is immeasurable and unlimited.”
