Yet again, I will never be patient enough to let a king retire naturally and I have crowned a new one. I got bored of my previous appearance so I decided it was time for a full change!

Marking a Historic Year in Denmark
One year ago today, Denmark witnessed a significant chapter in its royal history as Queen Margrethe II formally abdicated the throne, passing the crown to her son, King Frederik X. Queen Margrethe's reign was a beacon of stability and grace, and her abdication after over half a century marked the end of a remarkable era.
As we now reflect on the first year of King Frederik X's reign, it is clear that he has embraced his role with the dedication and poise befitting his lineage. His approach to modernizing the monarchy while honouring its deep-rooted traditions has been widely recognized and celebrated.
This transition symbolizes not just the continuity of the Danish monarchy but also its evolution, resonating with the values of the Danish people. As we commemorate this milestone, we honour Queen Margrethe II's enduring legacy and look forward to the future under King Frederik X's leadership. Long live the King!

Newk’s Favorite Salad. Newk’s. Ridgeland, Mississippi. 2.8.2024.
NOTE TO SELF: This should probably be the go-to order. Not that it's great, but it's got artichokes and grapes and bleu cheese. And not avocados that could brown and ruin the whole thing like last month. I haven't been to Newk's in years, and now I've been twice in two months. Eish.
Currently ranked 6th of seven February meals.

I loooveee people dude. Like I love them. There is love in my heart. Shoutout to the woman who walks her huskies down my street twice a day and always smiles through it and let's me pet them. Shoutout to the guy- a stranger- who gave my mom a little extra cash a few years ago so she could afford a backpack for me. I still think about him. And I still think about the newks employee that gave us drinks for free and the one kid in my highschool I didn't know too well who checked in on me when I became the butt of a joke.
It's so easy to get overwhelmed with shitty people I've met and people who've hurt me but like. Brooo . What about the super nice comments I get on beginner art? Super nice comments I used to get in the inbox of my writing when I was still starting out? What about all my pals. Then what huh . I'm so so loved my all my friends r u kidding me. Everyone deserves the friends I have dude
But also . It's not even just people who r nice 2 me. Sometimes I just see people. I love them. I saw a couple riding their bikes the other day and they just looked so fucking happy dude. There's kids on Halloween who just wanted handshakes with dinosaurs. Parents with babies getting so fucking excited when the kid says smthing oh my god . You ever see a baby say some shit like "sky" and then the parents are just so "!!! Yeah!! That's the sky!! You're so smart!!" That's the cutest shit I've ever seen. God I fucking love people

DAY 10 (November 20, 2024)
Breakfast – Life Cereal w/ milk & coffee
I know there is a orange in the picture – it’s a lie. It never got eaten because I ended up not being in the mood for it.
Lunch – Leftover Chicken Pot Pie Pasta, biscuit, and salad
I ended up ordering a salad from Newks because I didn’t feel like the pasta was going to be enough. But to be portion control friendly – I split the salad with Hayden to go with his lunch too.
Snack – ½ Butterfingers
This was the other half of the Butterfinger from the other day
Dinner – Tikia Masala burrito & 2 samosa w/ sauce
Yea, I caved and ordered food in for dinner. Traffic had me taking almost 2 hours to get home and I was just so done with the day. Not the worst option to get honestly and because the rest of the day was fairly chill with eating – it didn’t feel like to much.
Late Night Snack – Milk & 4 Oreo Cookies
I did end up drinking all my water for the day so that was an accomplishment. I did realize I had no fruit today – AH! Well unless you count the grapes in my salad. Lol

Sonny Rollins + Herbie Hancock - The Half Note, New York City, April 30, 1965
Serving as a cool — and much briefer — followup to Aidan Levy's recent bio, the New York Review of Books recently published The Notebooks of Sonny Rollins. Gathering a bunch of entries stretching from the late 50s to very nearly the present day, it's a fascinating look into the mind of Newk — a busy mind, indeed. Not a diary, but more of an ongoing record of thoughts, aphorisms and reminders. A lot of practical sax info, too! If anything, this peek behind the curtain really humanizes Sonny, showing his insecurities, his worries, his philosophies, etc. Most of all, he's clearly a guy who has never stopped working to improve himself. Even when he was acclaimed as one of the greatest musicians of all time, there were still more hills to climb.
Meanwhile, this rare-ish meet-up with Sonny and Herbie Hancock popped up in my feed recently — and it's a very good listen. These two geniuses didn't work together all that much; I think their most sustained collab was the Standard Sonny Rollins and Now's The Time LPs from the mid-60s. But hearing the pair here, you definitely will think that they should've gotten together more often. Why isn't there a Rollins funk opus with the Headhunters?!

John Coltrane Guest Artist, Sax (Tenor)
Red Garland Guest Artist, Piano
Philly Joe Jones Drums, Guest Artist
Paul Chambers Bass, Guest Artist
Rudy Van Gelder Engineer, Liner Notes, Remastering
***
At a time when he was a member of the legendary Clifford Brown/Max Roach sextet, Sonny Rollins was still the apple fallen not too far from the tree of Miles Davis. Tenor Madness was the recording that, once and for all, established Newk as one of the premier tenor saxophonists, an accolade that in retrospect, has continued through six full decades and gives an indication why a young Rollins was so well liked, as his fluency, whimsical nature, and solid construct of melodies and solos gave him the title of the next Coleman Hawkins or Lester Young of mainstream jazz. With the team of pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones, staples of that era's Miles Davis combos, Rollins has all the rhythmic ammunition to cut loose, be free, and extrapolate on themes as only he could, and still can. This is most evident on his version of "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World," started in its normal choppy waltz time, followed by a sax/drums prelude, a drum solo from Jones, and steamed from there on in, a hot 4/4 romp. Garland is particularly outstanding for keeping up the pace, depth and placement on this one. A bluesy version of "When Your Lover Has Gone," again enlivened by Jones, and the legendary title track with Rollins and John Coltrane trading long solos, and fours with Jones, are tunes that in the mid-'50s defined the parlance "blowing session." "Paul's Pal," in tribute to Chambers, has become a standard in its own right with a bright, memorable melody showing the good humor of Rollins, especially on the second time through, while the saxophonist's ability to sing vocal like tones through his horn is no better evinced as during the light ballad "My Reverie." A recording that should stand, proudly alongside Saxophone Colossus (listen here), as some of the best work of Sonny Rollins in his early years, it's also a testament to the validity, vibrancy, and depth of modern jazz in the post-World War era. It belongs on everybody's shelf.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Green Goddess Salad. Newk’s. Fayetteville, Arkansas. 1.18.2024.
NOTE TO SELF: My first Newk's meal in over three years. I'm good to wait another three. Lettuce was browning, avocado tasted like it'd been cut the yesterday, and the cucumbers were freezer-burnt.
Currently ranked 14th of 19 January meals.
