Romania: Timisoara
On my final morning in Belgrade I woke up a little earlier than usual to be the first customer in a coffee shop called Uzitak. The receptionist of the hostel had recommended I try a shop in the centre of Belgrade to find my souvenir magnet because weirdly enough Belgrade seems to have hardly any souvenirs or souvenir shops! But luckily this shop was full of awesome unique things that I could happily browse. I took the bus from a huge traffic jam in the main square to St Mark's place and then walked back into the center so that I could get some more photos on the way. I took the same breakfast as I'd had the first day and enjoyed the "eggy bread" and a moka again and then left all of my remaining Serbian dinars as a tip. I waited in the hostel for an hour or so and eventually my shuttle to Timisoara arrived - I was the last pick up so my delightful seat was squished in the front between the driver and his assistant. Two massive muscly Serbians. It was going to be a long four hours! I felt like I knew exactly when we reached Romania. I mean, of course I knew because I wasn't unconscious when we went through the border crossing and had to present our passports and tell them how long we'd be staying! But it seemed like a shift in landscape as we crossed. The hills of Serbia had disappeared and huge dry looking fields stretched on and on in the distance. Just one road stretching through a country painted with a yellow orange hue like Halloween. We passed tiny villages in the blink of an eye and people were riding decrepit bikes slower than if they'd walk. Somehow, it was exactly as I had imagined Romania and I loved it already. The sun was setting as I jumped out of the shuttle just metres from the orthodox cathedral so I tried to snap a few photos while looking around for the secret entrance to my chosen hostel. It was actually right in the square and had a balcony overlooking the cathedral so for €10 per night I couldn't ask for more! The host Dragos showed me around but oddly enough the other five people in the dorm were all sleeping at 6pm so I simply left my bag and headed out while I could still see. It took me about ten minutes to reach the old town centre and I was pleasantly surprised by how cute and colourful it was. The buildings were impressively grand, with tidy green gardens and shiny statues in the huge piazza that was a welcome change from the general run-down impression from the Balkan region. I guess it was a welcome back to the EU! I found a grocery store to buy some things for breakfast and a cider because for whatever reason they had New Zealand's Old Mout cider! I bought my train ticket for my journey to Cluj Napoca tomorrow and, feeling a little hungry walking back, was lured into KFC with a full zinger burger combo for about €3.50... couldn't help that one. I sat and enjoyed my cider writing my blog and watching a couple preparing their dinner in the hostel and marvelling at the guy's unibrow.
The following day I woke up early to have a small breakfast and wash my laundry. While it was in the dryer I headed out for a coffee and a walk around the old town again by daylight this time. It was eerily quiet for such a largely populated city on a Sunday at midday. It was peaceful though, despite the creepiness. I packed up and took a piss smelling train for 9 hours all through the day to Cluj which was a good opportunity to catch up on my Netflix! This was also my long awaited private hotel room at Hampton to make the most of my staff benefits and it was so comfortable to sleep in a big bed all to myself and have a nice cold bottle of water waiting for me after the journey!

20 years ago, where my girlfriend lives now used to be pretty dodgy: because there’s a canal nearby, there’s space on either side of it where people can deal all sorts of things hidden behind trees. Slowly, though, the neighborhood started getting better and cleaner, essentially because the entire city of Paris has become expensive now (except by New York standards), so every place that could be nice ends up being nice real quick (suburbs are another story).
Drugs got out of the neighborhood, but not out of Paris: instead, they moved to the neighborhood west from there, which happens to be mine. A couple of years ago, I still remember ordering my Zinger Tower burger at the local KFC late at night (I still ate meat then; and drank; and smoked; and did crack) next to a guy who was shaking so hard he couldn’t hold his tray. Then, the police made the area a “special zone”, which meant extra rounds at all times of the day, and the neighborhood gradually got cleaner too.
Now... some guys went back to the old neighborhood, aka my girlfriend’s (some also went north, but a lone crackhead is still a nuisance). Yesterday evening, as we were walking home after dinner, and after an obvious junkie (skinny, dirty, toothless and somewhat restless) has just asked us for coin, we arrived in front of the building where a neighbor was smoking his cigarette outside. He’d seen our drug-related encounter and we went: 
Neighbor: Man, when I moved in the neighborhood, 5 or 6 years ago, it wasn’t like this... I could walk around the square right there and not get asked anything... The other day, I had just managed to put my new-born baby to sleep and I was just catching a breath of fresh air, when four different guys asked me for money as I crossed the square once! I asked them: “Do you want my kid to smoke crack too?”. One of them replied: “No, we do...”
Me: I reckon that was slightly insensitive. Why would you talk about giving your kid crack, even though all he cares about right now is milk, to junkies in withdrawal? Imagine if your kid saw you give them his milk!
Neighbor: You’re right, I’m sorry. Crack is a beautiful thing.

Daily Diary - 4th February 2018
Today was going to be ‘out walking day’
15 minutes sleep in
Today I got to sleep in until 7:45am again. Wow, 15 minutes extra sleep again which is kewl. It’s always nice to get some extra sleep, especially when you up late feasting on Netflix. So, get up, go downstairs and do kids breakfast. Get my coffee. Drink my coffee. Wake up.
Was another day for not so little Miss to go to Karate, was an advanced course. So, my wife took her and me and little Mr did a few things. We popped up to the shops, had a nice coffee and cookie at Waitrose. After which, we headed out for a lovely (though little chilly) walk around Upton Country Park).

As lunchtime arrived quickly, me and little Mr headed over to KFC for a small snack lunch. The £1.99 snack boxes are quite good really. He loves the popcorn chicken, so great for a snack lunch on the go. They went down well – and so did my Zinger Burger.
Heard from my wife and she decided to head to KFC too – we had identical meals by the sound of it.
Needed salad
So, we went home and waited on my wife. I managed to push out a post to another site which is kewl – one of the affiliate sites I am playing and learning with.
Turns out we need salad bits. We decided to have a salad for the evening, we like salads. So when they got back we all headed back up to Waitrose (its the nearest supermarket and is walking distance). Bit expensive but got all bits we need, which was good. So, for myself and my wife it was nice fishcake with salad and for the kids, they had some nice real fish fingers. Went down well.
After which it was time for little Mr’s bath. He likes his bath, though it can get him a little energetic as it has sensory input. So, we try not to do it as the last thing before bed, otherwise, he gets a bit energetic. Bath done, it was time for some chill out time downstairs.
Being a little Mr…
Little Mr decided, today it seems, that he was going to get in mischief. Just before his bath he took a mouth full of juice and spat it out onto the floor. It’s not the first time he has done this; now we get a cloth and do hand over hand to make him dry/clean it. After his bath, he continued this. So, I ended up putting some juice in a drink bottle (the sports type) and letting him have some when he was thirsty – but not letting him have it himself. It seemed to stop the spitting out for today. It’s just one more thing we have to deal with it seems.
There are a number of things that, with a 5-year-old you’d be passed with. It’s just all down to his delayed learning, he’s probably going through the terrible 2’s – though been doing that probably a few years now 🙂   – it can tire but it’s just something you keep going with.
Soon it was bedtime
So, we left him playing/relaxing until 8:30pm, then it was bedtime – with the hope that he would be tired. He wasn’t. It was midnight before he finally nodded off. Difficult one tonight.

Apparently, me still lapa after only few hours of le KFC. Huhuu. How now brown cow. Me remember back then, KFC used to be somewhat a luxury food. Maybe once in few months, if not a year, we wud get to eat it. The fact that Abah did not eat ayæ (yes, at all) certainly not helping. (And me, copybearing your style, continued where me left off petang tadi hehe) Hmm talkin bout KFC, me remember one time, hehe, me kinda blackmailed one of Abang's friends and used le money for a Zinger burger. Lol. How did me blackmail? Hehe. Me was chillin at home one morning; while waitin for school later noon. Then came this friend of Abang; me call him Abg Wan. He had a video tape in his hand. Guess what? It was a porn; and he wanted to watch it in my place, cos his video player broke down! Lol. Me was reluctant at first; but then when he offered to pay (read : bribe) me RM5, me was like.. okaylah. Not only me get to watch new porn, but also get laif for it. Hahahahahhaha jahat kan? So yah; later that day, me walked some km to le nearest KFC to my school and.. zing zing Zinger! Haha. But cud only buy an ala carte; afraid me cant afford full meal. Jaaadilah kannnn... Me arrived in iOi liao. Surau is full tho. So decided to finish le post first while waiting. Hmm. Sorry tau. Me never wanted to put anyone ahead of you. Me just jokingly told you to mandi, but you just agreed. Huhuu. Justttt a tiny bit of merajuk there, then.. regrets. Shouldve at least asked you to teman me until solat kan. But if me dis, me wont get to finish up le post kan? P.s. : Luviu. Never less. Mishu. Even more. And yesh; you ARE yummmmieeeerrrrr than KFC. Period.

I failed my driver’s license test twice and only got it on the third occasion by bribing my instructor. The first time, when perched on a hill with my handbrake up, poised to attempt the dreaded “hill start”, I nervously plunged the gearstick past first and into reverse. I revved the engine, released the handbrake and flew backwards towards the instructor, who leapt out of the way and flung his clipboard onto the grass in the process. No words were exchanged and none were needed. I had failed with flying colours.
I shouldn’t have gone back to Durbanville for a second test. I shouldn’t have gone back to Durbanville for any reason, but specifically for a doomed exam. Doomed because anyone who fails so flamboyantly the first time is going to have his work cut out the second time around and so it proved. I did make it up the hill but not out of the yard; a bumped pole, a sigh, a familiar traipse back to the office and I was back in the car with my mother. I remember being more concerned about the fact that I’d wasted the application fee than anything else.
It would be two years before my third try and only after my learner’s license had expired, which meant going back to Ottery to rewrite it, the whole process becoming like a boring version of snakes and ladders. The first time, I arrived full of confidence and duly failed. Having scraped through the second one, I finagled an appointment at Fish Hoek testing centre. Smaller, flatter, more English than Durbanville, I thought: I’ll pass this one.
In fact, I simply had to pass. A week after the appointment I was due to fly to Sweden to begin a life with a girl I had rashly proposed to earlier that year on a small, treeless island half an hour from Malmö. Later, when we inevitably parted, I realised that proposing to marry someone actually means wanting to be married to them and isn’t, as I firmly believed at the time, just a new and cool way of saying you’re into someone. But this was long before that. The pressure was on. I started the car.
Fish Hoek was odd in that you had to drive a bit to get to the place where the driving test began. In that short journey to the yard, I wasn’t sure whether I was being tested or not. This uncertainly would prove crucial when, having aced the various neck-craning, eye-darting assignments in the yard, I rolled the car very slightly as we parked in front of my instructor’s office, stopping him halfway through a sentence I was sure was about to conjure the magic word: “passed”.
“Hmm,” he said instead. “I’m sorry but that’s a fail.” I frantically tried to argue that this bit wasn’t the real test, that the test began and ended in the yard, but quickly realised the insanity of my pleas and simply gave up. A few seconds passed in silence. We sat together, our seatbelts still on, in a parking lot empty but for the car we were in, a Toyota Tazz, I recall. I had nothing left to say. I was a 20-year-old engaged university dropout who had failed his driver’s test for a third time and whose mother was sitting in another car, a sky blue Opel Cub I recall, reading and waiting to pay, at the other side of the building.
“I…can’t fail this test,” I said eventually, to nobody really; it was a way of bracing myself for the walk of shame. But my test was not over. As I reached for the keys in the ignition, the instructor, who curiously still hadn’t taken his seatbelt off, spoke three words I will never forget. He said them slowly, deliberately. “Talk to me,” he said, staring straight ahead.
So, I talked. I told him my story. He listened patiently and when it was over, he told me he had an idea. He would go inside to look over the paperwork and I would go to KFC and buy a Zinger meal. Why? It being early in the morning, he hadn’t yet had breakfast. I must have thought this was perfectly reasonable because I went straight to my mother and got into the car. Our conversation went something like this:
Mom: “And?”
Me: “We need to go to KFC”
Mom: “Did you pass?”
Me: “I won’t know until we go to KFC.”
We drove into the centre of Fish Hoek and found the KFC easily. I went to the door, stared through the glass into the empty kitchen and my heart sank. It was closed. I am going to fail my driver’s test because KFC is not open, I thought. I was not ready to be amused by this.
Whether it was my idea or my mother’s, it was decided that instead of going back empty handed we should try another take-away place. Wimpy? Spur? Maybe he wasn’t fussy. The Spur, too, was easy to find. Any flash of garish colour stands out against the desolate grey of a seaside town in winter. I went upstairs and found, to my relief, a smattering of bored waitrons. One handed me a large wooden menu in the shape of a tombstone and I found what seemed to be the closest to a zinger meal we were likely to get at 9am on a Tuesday morning in Fish Hoek.
We drove back from the Golden River Spur in silence. I placed the bag on the instructor’s desk. He peered into it, regarding the contents. Was he counting them? Burger – check. Chips – check. Fanta – check.
He opened a drawer in his desk and found a stamp. Wetting it with a prolonged, firm push into the inkpad, he began the routine I had waited years to see: a violent double stamp, the flourish of a pen, a bit of sticky tape over a photo of my smiling face. With that, it was done. I had my driver’s license.
That was 17 years ago, the same winter Hansie Cronje was in court over match fixing allegations. There was a mood of corruption in the air. I remember going through the motions, not realising - not wanting to realise, perhaps – what was happening. It was years after that strange morning when the penny finally dropped. I hadn’t passed my driver’s license, I had bought it for a chicken burger. I had passed, but I had also failed.
Questions remain. Was this just the sort of thing that happened at Fish Hoek testing centre? Should I have done something about it? And where was my mother in all of this? When I play the movie back in my head, she plays a minor supporting act. She is uncritical, compliant even. But I know she would have asked questions if she had cottoned on. Perhaps I lied to her when I got back to the car. Perhaps I couldn’t bear to tell her I’d failed again. Perhaps. I don’t remember. It was a long time ago.
