Firearms Projects from 2023

This past year has been quite a fun year in terms of firearm projects I’ve been a part of. Definitely managed to check a few of my collection and project goals off the list, no doubt. The year started out with a lofty goal I had started last year and that was to obtain one of the new Spear LT rifles from Sig Sauer. Brownells got one in stock in January and I was able to pick it up and go to town with it. It’s one gorgeous rifle and hasn’t undergone much in regards to changes since picking it up. Only added a Sig Tango MSR 1-6 optic, Rugged muzzle device, backup sights and the Arisaka rail clamp. Other than that it’s been shot and shot a good bit. One of my favorites!

My next firearm project was going old school. I had wanted a new revolver for quite some time and ended up picking up a Smith & Wesson Model 629 6.5” .44 Magnum. It’s one gorgeous revolver! Swapped out the springs for a spring kit from Brownells to lighten up the trigger pull a tad and swapped out the nice wood grips for a set of Hogue grips to tame down the punch top the hand. It’s one great shooter!

Next up was a project that I had been wanting to do for a few years now and that was a tactical levergun. I had hopes of a Henry X model, but opted for an all-Weather in .44 Magnum from Brownells. Sent it off to MadPigCustoms for a chop and thread and threw the Ranger Point Precision catalog at it. Topped off with the Brownells MPO 1-6 donut optic and rugged Obsidian 45 suppressor, it’s already been proven to be a solid hunting rig. Took the largest buck I’ve ever harvested this season using this setup. Already looking towards my next levergun project. Have been thinking of a .357/.38Special, but might end up with a 45/70.

Both the Henry .44 magnum and S&W 629 .44 magnum sparked a renewed interest in reloading. Since I now have 3 firearms using .44 magnum, I decided that it was time to start reloading this caliber. It’s been a ton of fun and I’ve found my reloads to be way more accurate in my Henry rifle than factory ammo of the same type.

My latest project has been the most trying and definitely not finished yet and that’s my Ruger SFAR 16” .308 rifle I picked up from Brownells a few months ago. I have hopes to use this rifle on future hunting trips, but so far it’s no where’s near where it should be. It has struggled with some gas regulation issues which have been commonly reported with these rifles. Ruger has an updated gas regulator enroute to me as I write this. The other issue I’ve experienced has been a defective ejector.

All in all it’s been one exciting year in my life in regards to firearms! I thoroughly enjoy projects like these even if they don’t go smooth. Looking forward to what next year’s going to bring.
