The pupils of the patients with PTSD not only showed an exaggerated response to threatening stimuli, but also to stimuli that depicted “positive” images, such as exciting sports scenes.
Co-author Professor Nicola Gray, from Swansea University, said: “This shows that the hyper-response of the pupil is in response to any arousing stimulus, and not just threatening ones.
“This may allow us to use these positive pictures in therapy, rather than relying upon negative images that can be quite upsetting to the patient, and therefore make therapy more acceptable and bearable.
“The current Covid-19 pandemic is expected to produce a large increase in instances of PTSD from the traumatic events that have occurred. Clearly, better forms of therapy would be of a great help, but these ideas need testing before we can put them into clinical practice.”
Lead author Dr Aimee McKinnon, who conducted the research at Cardiff University but is now at Oxford University, said:“These findings allow us to understand that people with PTSD are automatically primed for threat and fear responses in any uncertain emotional context, and to consider what a burden this must be to them in everyday life.
“It also suggests that it is important for us to recognise that, in therapy, it is not just the fear-based stimuli that need [deliberate] re-appraising. If someone with PTSD is faced with any high-level of emotional stimulation, even if this is positive emotion, it can immediately trigger the threat system.

Peter Lorre Chats with WWI Victoria Cross holder
Was I ever tickled to find this! I was searching for images of Peter Lorre visiting hospitals/patients for the war effort in WWII (per @peterlorres21stcentury). And suddenly this showed up.
IMG caption: Actor Peter Lorre at Rookwood Hospital with the Deputy Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Cardiff in July 1949. He is seen chatting with Mr. JH Williams, of Ebbw Vale, a 1914-18 VC.
From the article:
"One famous Hollywood character actor who visited Rookwood Hospital in the July of 1949 was Peter Lorre. He was appearing at the New Theatre, and during his visit he chatted to a Mr JH Williams of Ebbw Vale, who was a World War One Victoria Cross holder. A picture of him doing so appeared in the Echo at the time and incidentally, the picture can be seen in my book Cardiff: Remember When." - Brian Lee
As scraped by The Free Library, originally from South Wales Echo, Feb 16, 2018.
And doesn't Peter look handsome. And, as usual, perched comfortably askew.
What was Peter doing in Cardiff, July 1949?
Making his British stage debut at the New Theatre, reading Edgar Allan Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart as part of a variety bill!
While we don't have a recording of him on stage - at least, I haven't found one - you can at least listen to the terrifying depth of emotion in his 1945 radio recording.
#i'd have loved to have heard that conversation#peter lorre#looking divine#world war two and world war one meet#british history#WWI#cardiff#New Theatre#peter lorre stage

Our apologies to the Grue-Believers expecting Without Warning (1980), but Ghost Story (1981) is a film the Grue-Crew have been keeping their collective eyes on for a few years, patiently waiting for it to move from PPV to a subscription service. Rest assured, Without Warning is already rescheduled to record in late November 2024.
Ghost Story’s cast and crew sports eight Oscar winners plus several nominees, and yet, the Grue-Crew are divided in their appreciation. Compromises and sacrifices must be made when transforming a 500-page, complexly plotted novel into a two-hour movie, and the results are hit-and-miss. Despite its faults, it’s a remarkable film, and the crew has much to discuss.
At the time of this writing, Ghost Story is available to stream from Amazon Prime (for a short time) and multiple PPV sources. It is also available on physical media as a Blu-ray formatted disc from Scream Factory.
Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Jeff, will be The Blob (1988)! Classic Era covered the original 1958 version, and a previous 80s crew covered this version in episode 126 almost seven years ago. This time, the current 80s Grue-Crew will be joined by effects artists Ralph Miller and Jeff Farley, who both worked on the film. This is going to be fun!
Please let them know how they’re doing! They want to hear from you – the coolest, grooviest fans – so leave them a message or comment on the Gruesome Magazine Youtube channel, on the Gruesome Magazine website, or email the Decades of Horror 1980s podcast hosts at [email protected].

Emotive Newcomer's 'Marionette' Debut New 'Your Hand' Single
New Cardiff Band 'Marionette' have today released their brand new debut single 'Your Hand' which will be released on all streaming platforms. 'Marionette made their well recieved debut on the Adam Walton BBC Introducing in Wales show on BBC Radio Wales recently, which was deemed an '...a powerful and impressive debut!' by Adam Walton.
Hailing from the heart of South Wales, Marionette is an indie alternative rock band that weaves together the sharp, melodic sensibilities of The Strokes, the eclectic flair of Mini Mansions, and the Britpop cool of Blur. Originally founded as a covers band by two childhood friends, Marionette has evolved into a powerful four-piece, crafting original music that resonates with the energy and authenticity of the modern rock scene.
The band's story began in the close quarters of a university house, where the two founding members spent countless nights writing songs, experimenting with sounds, and dreaming of a bigger stage. Their deep-rooted friendship and shared passion for music laid the groundwork for what would eventually become Marionette. As their songwriting skills sharpened and their creative vision became clearer, they knew it was time to take their music beyond the confines of their living room.
With the addition of two new members who brought fresh influences and dynamic energy, Marionette transformed into a full-fledged band ready to take on the local music scene. They quickly made a name for themselves in South Wales, performing at local venues where their original music captivated audiences with its blend of jangly guitar riffs, punchy rhythms, and introspective lyrics. Each performance reinforced their belief that they were onto something special—creating a sound that is both nostalgic and refreshingly original, echoing the best of the past while firmly looking toward the future.
With a growing reputation across South Wales and beyond, Marionette is poised to make their mark on the UK music scene, offering a fresh take on the alternative rock genre that is as infectious as it is authentic.
Marionette said this about the track....... Our new release is called Your Hand and it’ll be our first release. The lyrics were written about the walk home from a first date, initially feeling anxious about how everything went but then throughout the song feeling more and more excited about the future with this person. The main guitar part was written first, channeling a massive grungy sound. To balance this the second guitar plays a more jangly Smiths-esque line in the verses. This all comes together with driving bass and huge drums, and of course the drum solos to leave some room for dancing after the choruses. The song has been a favourite both in the band and for the audiences we’ve played to, so we knew we wanted this to be our first single. We recorded it over two days in the summer at Hot Jam in Bridgend, with the help of William’s brother Alex and the ever loving and patient Colm Foxon - the engineer and owner of the studio. The track was mixed and mastered by the great Charlie Francis who we owe the tight and punchy sound to.

Yangzheng Compassionate Rehabilitation Public Welfare Health Popularization Conference was held grandly
On February 19th, the "Yangzheng Love Rehabilitation Charity Walk Popularization Conference" organized by the Rehabilitation Branch of China Anti-Cancer Association and Beijing Aipu Cancer Patient Care Foundation was held in Shijiazhuang. With the theme of "Caring for Life, Acting Together", the conference focused on the prevention and treatment of cancer and explored the rehabilitation strategy of surviving with tumor.
Prof. Yiling Wu, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and director of the State Key Laboratory for the Study of Complex Diseases and Innovative Traditional Chinese Medicine, Prof. Anli Shi, honorary chairman of the Rehabilitation Branch of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association and chairman of the Beijing Aipu Cancer Patient Care Foundation, Prof. Wengguo Jiang of the School of Medicine of Cardiff University in the United Kingdom, and Prof. Jing Li of the Fourth Hospital of Hebei Medical University, as well as many other specialists in the field of medicine and oncological diseases, and the patients of the masses gathered together in an in-depth discussion on how to improve the survival rate of cancer patients, the latest progress of research on the prevention and treatment of oncological diseases, and the role of traditional Chinese medicine in the prevention and treatment of oncology. They gathered together to discuss how to improve the survival rate of cancer patients, the latest progress of research on tumor disease prevention and treatment, and the role of traditional Chinese medicine in tumor prevention and treatment.
In the popular science lectures, Prof. Wu Yiling, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and director of State Key Laboratory of Luo Disease Research and Innovative Traditional Chinese Medicine, made an academic report titled "The body needs to be operated, the health needs to be managed - Chinese eight-key sutra for health maintenance and tumor prevention and treatment", in which academician Wu introduced the theory of Luo Disease and explored the research of tumor pathogenesis, pointing out that In his report, Academician Wu introduced the research on the disease mechanism of tumors guided by the theory of luo disease and pointed out that traditional Chinese medicine can play a role in improving the symptoms and quality of survival of patients in the treatment of tumors, in which improving the appetite of patients is the key to improve the symptoms of tumor patients. Conventional treatment combined with TCM is a new treatment method, which may become the key to achieve new progress in the treatment of cancer patients. Academician Wu also introduced in the report that the patented Yangzheng Xiaoji capsule, developed under the guidance of the theory of complex disease, can play the roles of starving tumor, trapping tumor and killing tumor, which brings new hope for cancer treatment.
Professor Jiang Wenguo from Cardiff University School of Medicine, UK, took "Mechanisms and Treatment of Tumor Metastasis" as the theme and explained in detail the mechanisms of tumor metastasis as well as the efficacy and advantages of traditional Chinese medicine in the prevention and treatment of tumors. Prof. Jiang Wenguo pointed out that Yangzheng Xiaoji, as a broad-spectrum anti-tumor Chinese medicine, can reduce or delay the occurrence of resistance to these targeted drugs when combined with anti-angiogenic targeted drugs. Early series of clinical studies have found that tumor patients who start taking Yangzheng Xiaoji capsules before chemotherapy can play the role of synergism and toxicity reduction, which not only increases the sensitivity of patients to chemotherapeutic drugs and improves the efficacy of treatment, but also relieves the symptoms of patients, improves the quality of life of patients, and reduces the symptoms of fatigue, appetite reduction and other side effects of chemotherapy. Yangzheng Xiaoji ingredients include astragalus, ganoderma, cordyceps, and other medicinal herbs. These studies involve a variety of tumor types such as gastric cancer, pancreatic cancer, lung cancer, and breast cancer.
Professor Li Jing of the Fourth Hospital of Hebei Medical University made a report entitled "The Role of Chinese Medicine in Preventing and Combating Tumors", introducing the relevant knowledge of tumors, the causes of tumor formation, the understanding of tumors by doctors through the ages, and the advantages of Chinese medicine in preventing and combating tumors. Prof. Li Jing introduced in detail the clinical application and research results of Yangzheng Xiaoji Capsules, which is an innovative achievement of Chinese medicine in tumor treatment. The research shows that the combination of Yangzheng Xiaoji Capsules with chemotherapy can increase the effect and reduce the toxicity of the disease, significantly improve the clinical symptoms of patients in Chinese medicine, alleviate the symptoms of the patients, improve the appetite and weight of the patients, and improve the quality of patients' survival significantly.

Chapter Four
Sophie shoves Jack away, as the ship comes to a landing. She races out of the ship, and continues running until she can't anymore. She finds herself in a dingy alley somewhere in London. Her legs give out, and curls up on herself, and starts to cry. After what feels like hours, when all of her tears have dried up, Sophie stands back up, and wanders away again.
Sophie isn't sure how long she walks, just knowing she wants to get away from the Master, the Doctor, and the judgement that is thrown upon her. When she eventually stops moving, she finds herself near her childhood home. She sits down in front of the fence, resting her head against one of the fence posts. Eventually, the tugs of sleep surround her, and she falls into a fitful sleep.
She slowly blinks her eyes open, and hugs her pillow to her chest. She rolls over, and stretches her arms above her head. Looking around, she freezes, finding herself in her childhood room. From down the stairs, a voice calls, "Sophie, sweetie, breakfast's ready!"
Cautiously, Sophie slips out of the room, and pads down the stairs. Standing in the kitchen is a woman who looks like Sophie's mother, except older. At the table is a man who looks like Sophie's father, flipping through the newspaper. "Ah, there you are, dearest," the man says, setting down the paper, "Any big plans this weekend?"
Sophie gulps, her eyes wide, "Uh, yes?" she squeaks.
"Well, you can't very well do that on an empty stomach," the woman states, and sets a plate down on the table.
"Right," Sophie mutters, and takes a step for the table. At the moment, she's willing to play along, hoping that whatever is going on will reveal itself.
She takes a bite of the food in front of her, and it flashes her back to her childhood. Before she realises it, the breakfast is gone. The woman smiles, "You sure are that fast, sweetheart."
"She's a busy woman, Stacy," the man laughs. "Have a good day, dearest."
She nods hesitantly, and heads back up into her room. She changes out of the pyjamas that she woke up in. She then leaves the house, taking a deep breath. She reaches for her mobile, finding a phone in her pocket. "Okay, that's weird. The Doctor destroyed my mobile, so what is this?" Nevertheless she pulls the phone out of her pocket, and scrolls through the contacts. She doesn't recognize any of the numbers in the phone, and sighs. She dials the TARDIS, and waits for a response. When the phone isn't answered, she gives up, tucking the device back into her pocket. "Right. Strange place, people who look like my parents, but can't be my parents. New phone, new contacts, and no TARDIS. What is going on?"
She wanders off down the street, and stops when she sees a bus stop. She uses her mobile to search bus routes, and finds that the next bus that'll stop is headed to Wales. Sophie doesn't want to see Jack again, not after yesterday, and the year that never was, but she doesn't see another choice. She sits down on the bench and waits, patiently.
She boards the bus as it stops in front of her, and throughout the two hour trip she wracks her brain for what could be happening. So far, nothing has made sense, except for the Doctor ignoring her call. After what happened with the Master, she can't blame him for ignoring her. When the bus stops in Cardiff, she disembarks.
Sophie wanders over to the tourist information centre, and enters. Ianto is behind the desk, and he glances up when she enters, "Can I help you, ma'am."
"Ianto? It's me?"
"Sorry, do I know you."
"Look, Ianto, I don't know what's going on, or why you've picked today of all days, but now is not the time to mess with me." The Welshman blinks at her. "Okay, I need to talk with Jack."
"Who's Jack?" he asks, but she sees him reach for the gun under the desk.
"Captain Jack Harkness. Leader of Torchwood. I need to see him."
He pulls the gun out, and aims it at the woman, "How do you know about Torchwood?"
"I work there! Please, Ianto, I need to speak with Jack!"
He keeps the gun trained on her, as he reaches for the intercom button, "Jack, there's a woman here, claims she knows you, and works for Torchwood."
There's a rustling noise through the com, and
then Jack's voice, clear as day, "Bring her down."
She lets out a sigh, "Finally, some sense in the world."
Ianto leads her through the secret door, and down to the Hub, his gun held between her shoulder blades. When she steps into the Hub, Jack is waiting, hands on his hips, "Who the h*ll are you, and how do you know about Torchwood?"
She meets his eyes, "Oh, bl*dy hll, not you too, Jack. What is going on in the world?"
"Okay. Not a normal response." He drops his arms at his side, and takes her arm, "You can head back up, Ianto, I'll handle this."
He leads her up to his office, and handcuffs her to a chair opposite his desk. He then falls into his own chair, "Who are you?"
She sighs, "Sophia Jaclyn McCoy."
"Right. How do you know about Torchwood?"
"I work here."
He chuckles, "I've been here for a long time, I think I'd remember someone as cute as you working here."
Sophie shudders, "Gah. Don't do that. Do not flirt with me."
He looks taken aback, "Not the response I'm used to, but fine. You still don't work here."
"I do, Jack. You hired me, December 8, last year. Please, Jack, you have to believe me."
He leans back in his seat, "December 8, that's when the Sky Gypsy showed up, and I know I don't remember you."
She sighs, and can feel tears starting to form in her eyes, "Please, Jack. You have to remember me. Tell me you at least remember the Doctor."
That gets a response from the man. He sits forward, eyes wide, "You know the Doctor?"
"Yes! He's my best friend, my brother. So are you! Please Jack, tell me you remember me!" Tears start to fall down her cheeks, and she tries to swipe them away, but the cuffs prevent her from doing it.
Jack's face softens, and he stands up to walk around the desk. "I'm sorry, kid, really I am, but I don't know you."
"Please," she begs, and the tears start coming faster.
He crouches in front of her, and wipes the tears from her cheeks, "I hate to see someone as pretty as you cry." He leans back on his haunches, "Say I believe you, Sophia, how come I don't remember you?"
She sniffles, "I don't know Jack. Maybe there was a time shift, and somehow I've ended up in a parallel universe, or a pocket universe."
"That's a pretty big maybe, kid, but I'm willing to believe you, if you tell me one thing, how do you know the Doctor?"
She meets his eyes, "I met the Doctor the same day my parents died. They were turned into Cybermen, and he saved me. I've known him my whole life, and I know all of his lives."
He nods, "Okay, Sophia Jaclyn McCoy, let's see if we can figure out what's going on."
"Can we take the cuffs off?" Sophie asks, hope filling her voice.
He sighs, deeply, "Just cause I said I'd help, doesn't mean I fully trust you, kid. The cuffs stay, unless I can prove you are who you say you are."
Sophie shrugs, "Worth a shot, right?"

Hairline Scalp Micropigmentation: A Non-Surgical Solution
What is Hairline Scalp Micropigmentation? Hairline scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a non-surgical hair restoration technique that involves depositing pigment into the scalp to mimic the appearance of real hair follicles. It is a versatile procedure suitable for individuals experiencing receding hairlines, thinning hair, or complete hair loss.
How Does SMP Work? During SMP treatment, a trained technician uses specialized equipment to inject pigment into the scalp at varying depths, replicating the natural density and pattern of hair follicles. The result is the illusion of a fuller head of hair and a restored hairline.
Advantages of SMP Hairline scalp micropigmentation offers numerous benefits, including:
Non-Invasive and Safe: SMP does not involve any surgical procedures, minimizing the risks associated with traditional hair transplant surgeries.

The Process of Cardiff Hair Transplants: Cardiff hair transplants typically follow these steps:
Donor Area Extraction: Hair follicles are carefully extracted from areas of the scalp with healthy hair growth, usually the back or sides of the head.
Transplantation: The extracted follicles are meticulously implanted into the recipient areas, considering natural hair growth patterns and density.
Recovery and Growth: The transplanted hair follicles gradually adapt to the new environment and start growing naturally within a few months.
Advantages of Cardiff Hair Transplants Cardiff hair transplants offer several advantages:
Long-Lasting Results: Transplanted hair follicles are usually resistant to hair loss, providing a permanent solution.
Natural Hair Growth: As the transplanted hair follicles are sourced from the patient's own scalp, they grow naturally, blending seamlessly with existing hair.
Personalized Approach: Cardiff hair transplants can be tailored to meet individual needs, taking into account factors such as hairline design and desired density.

The New Horizons Team Reacts to a Spacecraft Error
There was an anomaly that prevented the New Horizons spacecraft from communicating with Earth. Since then, communication has been restored, and the spacecraft is in good condition.
At 1:54 p.m. EDT, the mission control centre at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland, lost contact with the unmanned spacecraft, which is now 10 days away from reaching Pluto. At 3:15 p.m. EDT, the mission control centre reestablished contact with New Horizons via NASA's Deep Space Network.
During that time, the spacecraft's autonomous autopilot identified a malfunction and switched to the backup computer, as it was planned to do in that circumstance. The backup computer was instructed by the autopilot to restart connection with Earth after entering "safe mode" on the spaceship. Afterwards, New Horizons started to broadcast telemetry to assist engineers in identifying the issue.
At 4 p.m. EDT, a meeting of the New Horizons Anomaly Review Board (ARB) was called to discuss the issue and begin developing a recovery strategy. Currently, the crew is focusing on getting New Horizons back on its original flight path. Full recovery is anticipated to take one to several days due to the 9-hour communication delay caused by operating a spacecraft over 3 billion miles (4.9 billion kilometres) from Earth; New Horizons will be temporarily unable to gather science data during that time.
When will it be finished? Well, two-way light time between New Horizons and Earth is nine hours. They had to command that sometime after they made contact again at 3:15 pm EDT / 19:15 UT, so they won't receive the information until the early hours of their morning. It sounds like they want additional information from the spacecraft before deciding on the best course of action. They'll presumably have come up with a list of explanations for the oddity in the interim. They might theoretically send a command later tomorrow AM ET to return the spacecraft to science if the new information they receive tomorrow morning supports one of their hypotheses and is benign, leaving a scientific gap of little over a day. If they're still unsure that they comprehend the spacecraft's health, it might require at least one more round of communication that lasts nine hours, followed by another meeting that takes up the majority of another day.
Safe modes are terrifying and bothersome but not uncommon and not, at this point, anything that New Horizons supporters should be stressing out about. I'll be the first to confess that I was a little frightened out when I initially got this news, but I have faith in the team to handle it and get the mission back to normal operations without any major science losses.
It will take some time before I can write an update once I have any fresh information to share due to the nine-hour wait.
NASA's New Horizons mission is back to regular science activities and is still on schedule to pass near Pluto.
According to the findings of the inquiry into the anomaly that sent New Horizons into "safe mode" on July 4, there was no hardware
or software malfunction on the spacecraft. A difficult to see timing error in the spacecraft command sequence that happened during an operation to get ready for the close flyby was the actual cause of the mishap. During the duration of the Pluto encounter, no such actions are anticipated.
As scheduled, science operations will restart, and preparations are being made to carry out the whole close flyby sequence. The mission scientific team and principal investigator have determined that the science observations missed during the anomaly recovery had little to no impact on secondary mission goals and no impact on any primary mission goals. "In terms of science, it won't turn an A-plus even into an A," stated New Horizons Principle Investigator Alan Stern of the Southwest Research Institute, Boulder. Due to the spacecraft's great distance from Earth, recovery will be extremely difficult. New Horizons is approximately 3 billion miles away, where radio signals, even moving at light speed, need 4.5 hours to get home. A nine-hour round journey is needed for two-way communication between the spacecraft and its operators.
A casual format for presenting research findings or showcasing cutting-edge techniques is the poster session. The CME/CPD accredited 12th International Nursing, Healthcare, and Patient Safety Conference offers you the chance to present your original ideas in a less formal setting than a paper presentation.
