Happy Friday, everyone! :) I hope you’ve all had a nice week! I know it’s once again been a hot minute since I’ve managed to make a deals post, so I apologize for that again, but I’m here now with what seems to be a really great selection so I hope that can make up for my absence a little bit. :) How’s everything been going for all of you? I hope you’ve all managed to find some time to relax and get some (I’m sure) much-needed rest and decompression from everything that’s going on right now.

I absolutely love all of Melissa Caruso’s books, so I highly recommend The Tethered Mage, as well as The Diviners! Both of those trilogies are finished, so there’s no waiting for new books if you’re worried about that... just saying. :) I’ve never read Night of the Mannequins, but I’ve really loved the Stephen Graham Jones books I’ve already read, so I think you can’t go wrong with him, probably! Also, I had to add Mr. Popper’s Penguins because I remember reading that in like third grade and it was so cute (or at least.. it used to be. How has it aged??)

Despite ‘Done Deal,’ the Bellaire Bridge Still Stands Unsafely and Unsoundly
“You could make a movie out of this.” That’s what the director of public works and development for the City of Benwood – David McLaughlin – thinks of the ongoing debacle involving the still-standing Bellaire Toll Bridge, a span closed more than 30 years ago that is losing bits and pieces of debris to the Ohio River and the streets below it. “It was all a scam.” That’s how McLaughlin, the Republican candidate for the Marshall County Commission, sums up the situation when explaining the bridge’s current ownership, the TV show demo deal with KDC Investment and owner Lee Chaklos, and how the federal government came to be its kinda-current (pronounced “absent”) caretaker. And now that it’s been more than a year since, according to McLaughlin, the state of West Virginia disengaged on a deal to demolish the Bellaire Toll Bridge and allow Benwood to benefit from scrap sales to rehabilitate the span’s 850-foot approach on the Mountain State side, McLaughlin now is asking one simple question. “Does someone have to die?” “For years, we’ve been trying to get answers and find a solution because this is a major public safety concern in our city,” he insisted. “We’re the smallest entity involved here and all we get told is that it’s up to us. It’s on us. The span continues to deteriorate, including along the approach on the West Virginia side. “Well, folks, we don’t have that kind of money in Benwood, West Virginia,” McLaughlin pronounced. “We can’t borrow it either, and we shouldn't have to ... especially since the State said it would.” The Bellaire Toll Bridge is a cantilever truss-designed span that opened in 1926 to establish another connection between the Northern Panhandle and East Ohio. The construction cost was about $1.2 million – the equivalent of nearly $26 million today – and seven million tons of structural steel was installed during construction. The bridge opened to the public on Dec. 22, 1926, and media outlets at the time reported at least 7,000 vehicles paid the toll and crossed the span that first day. The surface infrastructure for the bridge remains in place in Benwood, but the access ramps in Bellaire were removed during the construction of the four-lane Ohio Route 7 bypass built in the late 1990s. “It was a really popular way for a lot of people to cross the river, and the state of West Virginia must have thought so, too, because of the construction they did for it when building the new (W. Va. Route 2) through there,” McLaughlin explained. “But now West Virginia doesn’t seem too interested in the bridge, and that’s because it’s time to take care of what needs taken care of. “There are liens on the bridge, and the federal courts have the bridge in limbo,” he said. “Meanwhile, the bridge sits over top the city of Benwood, and it sits above where people walk and drive. There are city buses and school buses, and rocks have fallen from the concrete parts of the thing, and there have been chunks of metal that have fallen at the one-and-only entrance to the industrial park. If something happens to the bridge, we have a big situation.” Pieces of concrete and steel have fallen from the Bellaire Toll Bridge and onto the street down below in Benwood. Danger From Above Reporters with The Intelligencer in Wheeling penned a series of articles on the history and current status of the 98-year-old span, and the publication’s editors concluded in a March 30th editorial, “The Bellaire Bridge still stands, rusting and unused, a conservatory to wayward trees and shrubs — a testament to bureaucratic nonsense of the highest order.” Those reports, however, did not reveal the “done deal” – at least that’s what McLaughlin and Police Chief Frank Longwell thought in February 2023 – between the State of West Virginia and the City of Moundsville to finally raze the orphaned span. “We met with Charlie Reynolds when he was the state delegate representing (House District 6) this area at the time, and we reached out to our (federal) senators (Joe) Manchin and (Shelley Moore) Capito, and to everyone and anyone who would listen to us about the problem the Bellaire Bridge is to our city,” McLaughlin insisted. “Charlie Reynold got us the most action, and he told us to go get a number, an estimate, for taking the bridge down, so that’s what we did. “After working with experts in the business, we got an estimate of $3 million, and part of that deal was that we would get the proceeds from the scrap,” he said. “Charlie then told us that the Governor’s Office was on board, and I thought we had figured out how to take care of this problem. The money was supposed to be in the Governor’s contingency fund, but then we met with the officials with the Department of Transportation, and they had a completely different number for the demolition.” Benwood officials have the key to the gate that blocks the entrance to the Bellaire Toll Bridge, but McLaughlin says state officials have not visited recently to inspect the span. That number, by the way, was $10 million. “I remember me and Frank (Longwell) looking at each other and immediately asking where that number came from. They said they did a study on the bridge, but they never came to us to ask for the key to the lock on the gate. What kind of an inspection could it have been?” McLaughlin asked. “To this day, I have no idea what that was all about and how they came up with a number three times more than what our number was. It makes no sense. “It’s $3 million. At least it was when we had real experts work on the estimate. It’s not $10 million, but if they keep waiting and waiting, it will be in the future,” he said. “When they insisted back then, we knew it wasn’t coming down anytime soon. And now, we can’t get the audience, and we haven’t said much about it until now because we thought we could get the state involved again.” Reynolds, now the district manager for the state’s Division of Highways District 6 office in Moundsville, forwarded all questions to the state agency’s office in Charleston. Project to be built on the site of the Old Four Seasons Hotel and consists of a north and south residential condominium tower that sit on a three storey podium with retail fronting on Avenue Road. In May 2010 the OMB ruled in favour of the developer, Menkes, to construct a 127 metre and a 133 metre condominium tower. Provincial Speaker of the House, the Hon. Steve Peters appealed to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice to block construction of these two condominium towers as they would intrude on the picturesque view of the Queens Park Legislature. Canadian interdisciplinary design firm Johnson Chou Inc. was recently awarded the Interiors: Residential 2020 AZ Award from AZURE Magazine for their project, ShadowBox.

ShadowBox is an exploration of the essence of architecture: to enable the witnessing of the passage of time by capturing the elusive play of light and shadow, and to engender a heightened sense of movement through varying spatial scales and experiences. This includes the expansion and compression of single, double, and triple-height spaces, and through one’s engagement of interior elements such as bridges and stairs. The house is configured to capture the ever-changing light and shadow effects in various areas of the residence. The shadows cast in the interior reveal the juxtaposition between the permanence of the architecture and the ephemeral of the natural.
The residence was envisioned as an instrument for the appreciation of the profound ephemerality of time. The interior walls act as a blank canvas capturing the shadows of the abstracted forms and the movement, for example, of trees swaying in a breeze, in effect projecting the exterior environment into the interior. Like a reverse sundial, beams of light move across the walls and floors of the house. The moment is mesmerizing, cinematic, fleeting; in an instant, the shadows transform or disappear altogether.
Located in the Upper Beaches area of Toronto, the residence faces a busy, at times cacophonous arterial road and as a result, the exterior openings were minimized to a single horizontal strip window. The entrance into the residence is at the midpoint of the building accessed through a side lane. The entrance foyer is located between the dining and kitchen/breakfast areas. The east-west orientation of the building allows for morning light at breakfast and evening light at dinner. From the one-story kitchen, the dining room is double-height and the living room is triple-height, invoking a sense of expansion or compression as one flows through the home.
The AZ Awards is AZURE’s international architecture and design competition, recognizing excellence and innovation, and showcasing the world’s best projects, products, and ideas. To select these 20 winners, the AZ Awards jury of leading international designers drew from a record-breaking pool of 1,241 entries – and 68 AZ Awards finalists.
ShadowBox has also been recognized with a 2020 Value of Design Award (VODA) by Interior Designers of Canada, a 2019 International Design Award (IDA), and as a Finalist of the 2019 International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Global Excellence Awards.

Blessington Farms Pumpkin Patch & Fall Festival, 510 Chisolm Trail, Wallis, TX.
Lots to do at this enormous pumpkin patch from hay rides to a brand new Rope Maze. Visit the Quaker Parrot aviary, run the Rat Race, and say hi to Carl and John-Boy, the resident camels. General admission is $20 (extra $3 for flower picking) and includes all activities except fishing, children 24 months and under, free. The pumpkin patch and fall festival are open every Friday 9a-2p, Saturday & Sunday, 10a-5p, thru Nov.9. All law enforcement officers are free with ID, and immediate families half off.
ArBOOretum!, Houston Arboretum & Nature Center, 4501 Woodway Dr., Houston, TX
Saturday, October 19 from 10am–4 pm, the Houston Arboretum is holding a one-day pumpkin patch and event, rain or shine. Last entry is 3:15pm, so be there early. Events include a Trick-or-Treat Nature Trail, Train Rides, Live Reptiles, Petting Zoo & Pony Rides, Pumpkin Decorating and LOTS more. New additions this year: Halloween Market, featuring activities and wares from local vendors; Pumpkin Patch with $5 pumpkins, unlimited photo opportunities; Spooky Science Show full of Halloween-themed science experiments; and a Blood Drive – all donors (ages 16+) get into ArBOOretum FREE (see web site to sign up.) Old MacDonald's Pumpkin Patch, 3203 FM 1960 East, Humble, TX
For the month of October, pick out a pumpkin at Old MacDonald's Pumpkin Patch, in addition to all the regular activities like train rides, petting zoo, pony rides, etc. The Pumpkin Patch is open Oct. 1-Oct. 31. Admission is $12 +tax, all activities included, under 18 mos free.
The Great Pumpkin Hunt, Bellaire Town Square, 7008 S. Rice Ave., Bellaire, TX
Don't miss the Great Pumpkin Hunt on Thursday, Thursday, October 24, 2019, for children ages 0-10. The pumpkin hunt will begin at 4:30 PM in the Bellaire Town Square Event Lawn, as kids 10 and under enjoy candy, prizes, and hunting for pumpkins. Froberg's good sized Pumpkin Patch, open from 9a-5p daily, offers Hay Rides to their U-pick flower fields, a Plastic Duck Race, Tunnel of Fun, a Corn Maze, Mining Sluices, be aware that most rides and activities cost tokens, from $1-$4 each, $10 admission ages 3 and up. Special admission Saturday evenings in October include a Night time Corn Maze, Corn Cannon, Friendly Fire, Lighted Hay Ride, Fire Pits. Last tickets sold at 9pm, $10 admission, evening hours are 7pm-10:00pm The Fall Festival and Pumpkin Patch run thru Nov. 3.
Good Shepherd Kingwood Pumpkin Patch & Fall Festival, 2929 Woodland Hills Dr., Kingwood, TX
The Pumpkin Patch is open daily from 9am-7pm, Oct. 17-31st. Pumpkins priced according to size. The Fall Festival will be held Sat., October 26, 10a-4pm, and features, live music, obstacle courses, moonwalks, face painting, a bake sale, games, a trackless train, petting zoo, lots of pumpkins, model train display, vendors with wonderful crafts and merchandise and Food Trucks. P-6 Farms Pumpkin Fest, 9963 Poole's Road, Montgomery, TX
Join the Poole family at P-6 Farms, the largest u-pick pumpkin patch in the area. Lots of rides and activities for the kids, including pig races, apple cannons, wheelbarrow races, hay rides, and much more, including hot pumpkin donuts, BBQ, and kettle corn made on site. Open Saturdays and Sundays thru Nov. 9, General Admission tickets, online: $15.95 gate: $18.95.
Dewberry Farms Pumpkin Patch, 7705 FM 362, Brookshire, TX
Find the perfect candidate for a Jack O'Lantern on over 8-acres of pumpkins. Kids will enjoy more than 50 different attractions, including hay wagon rides, corn mazes, face painting, pony rides, all sorts of playground activities, rubber duck races, train rides, a singing chicken show, pig racing, and much more, while the adults might enjoy a glass of wine or beer at the Biergarden. Special nights bring fireworks displays. General admission to Dewberry Farm is $29.95 +tax per person ages 3+ - check the website for discounts. FCC Katy invites you to their annual front yard Pumpkin Patch, open daily until dark or when the pumpkins run out. Take photos, buy the perfect size pumpkin for your family, hear stories from local storytellers, and more. Funds from the Pumpkin Patch are used for the annual Giving Tree holiday project. Admission is Free, pumpkin prices vary. Groups are welcome, call to arrange in advance, $1-$5 per person includes a photo keepsake, craft, story and a pumpkin. Or visit Trunk or Treat on 10/26 with bounce houses, food trucks, and candy for the kids.
Texas Oil Ranch Pumpkin Patch and Scarecrow Festival, 23501 Macedonia Rd., Hockley, TX
A 56-acre amusement park and ranch, the Oil Ranch gives kids and adults hands-on opportunities to interact with farm animals, milk dairy cattle, throw a lasso, take hay rides and train rides. Make a game out of finding the 85 unique scarecrows on the property, and the kids can choose from thousands of pumpkins at the patch. Holy Cross Episcopal Church Pumpkin Patch, 5653 W. Riverpark Dr., Sugar Land, TX
Holy Cross Episcopal Church has between 40,000-50,000 pounds of pumpkin for your pickin', and FREE admission. Pumpkin prices range between $1-$40 for the largest size, with hay rides, face painting, a children's maze ranging from $1-$3. Concessions and baked good available, live music and dance activities daily. Open Fri, Sat & Sunday the month of October.
Old Time Christmas Tree Farm Pumpkin Patch, 7632 Spring Cypress Road, Spring, TX

Bring your little red wagon and the family dog, and pick out your fall pumpkins, among rides, farm animals, concessions and more, available for $3 activity tickets. Support St. Luke's Pure Sound youth choir at their 17th annual Pumpkin Patch. Pick out the perfect pumpkin from thousands, or just take photos, at this annual Clear Lake UMC event. Proceeds from pumpkin sales benefit both the church and other community programs. The patch is open daily starting October 12-31. Free admission, pumpkin prices vary according to size. Open daily, Mon-Sat, 9:30a to 7:30p, and Sundays 12:30p to 7:30p. Closed during worship services.

Enjoy the cooler weather and take advantage of the photo ops at the Whataburger Pumpkin Patch. In addition to the regular zoo exhibits, kids can Meet the Keeper, pick up stickers at the Candy Corn Maze stations, and more at this annual event. Held every Fri from 9a-1p, Sat & Sun 9a-3p, in October. Children are encouraged to come in costume, no weapons, gory costumes, or inflatables. Adults may come in costume, but must have their faces clearly visible; those with heavy makeup or full masks will not be admitted to the zoo.
