Dublin and New York have opened a “portal” to each city and it’s so fucking funny

This concept has been used before, but basically these “portals” are put up between two cities. It livestreams what’s happening in front of it to the other city’s portal, and vice versa. It’s supposed to be a cute thing where humanity gets to connect from across the world… and they chose Dublin to do this…

They really underestimated how little Dubliners give a fuck about these things, unless it’s to mess around. As well as how much we’re not fascinated by the US in the same way Americans are about Ireland. Honestly I’m loving how this is breaking down the stereotypes about Irish people (or Dubliners) are “quaint” and “sheltered” and “wholesome” and “fascinated by the big modern world of America”.

Day one a woman in Dublin was arrested for being drunk/ high and messing with the portal. The American side has people waving and being friendly, the Dublin side has people sticking up their middle finger, jeering, and mooning (showing their ass).

Went there with my mom today. Found out the portal between Dublin and New York is there. I wanted to wave to people but no one was on the New York side. It was still really exciting bc omg??? Portal to see all of y'all from 'merica. Wish I was able to see someone I actually know on the other side but I don't really have any American friends.

Also, does anyone here live in Ireland?

It’s 11am in Dublin and about 30 people on North Earl Street are vigorously waving at a man on an escooter in New York, who stares back at them with a look on his face that suggests he’s not entirely sure what’s going on. 

The two cities have just been linked up via a 24-hour live stream as part of the Portals art project. The large circular screen in the middle of the north Dublin street provides a window to the Flatiron South Public Plaza at Broadway (and vice versa) and will remain in place until the autumn. 

“They can see us, and we can see what’s going on there,” said one passerby to her friend on Thursday morning.

The Portal is the idea of Lithuanian artist Benediktas Gylys and is a collaboration between several bodies, including Dublin City Council and the EU Capital of Smart Tourism. The project will feature scheduled programming, including cultural performances at each city’s Portal. These will start in mid-May, with a visual program to celebrate New York Design Week Festival.
