Toyota have just given a shot of hope to all fans of exciting, driver orientated ‘family’ cars. Their accounts department gave the go ahead for the Yaris GR which is to be applauded even more for what it represents than for how it drives.

It is easy to wax lyrical on how this is a wonderful car, how it sets new parameters for performance, on how it is the greatest hot hatch of 2020 (probably 2021 and possibly 2022 too) BUT it is far, far more important than that. It has been produced by a very mainstream and huge motoring powerhouse - one not known for having particularly emotive cars in their current range. It is available in dealers across the country – from small country dealers to large conurbation based dealers. There’s no priority customer list; if you want one you can walk into your dealer and order one, simple as that (well, in theory at least).

The Yaris GR is a wakeup call for all mainstream manufacturers – reasonably small volume, performance hot hatches are still desirable! There are still enough enthusiasts in the world to make slightly crazy performance family cars a sales (and marketing) success – enough people are willing to buy a small car that goes fast but that has a dealer network spread across the country.  

The GR isn’t reserved for niche, exclusive dealers – neither sales nor servicing. It comes with options that make it just a little bit more track orientated for those who want a little extra special from their car and all from a mainstream motor manufacturer...

R5, TCR and World RX championships offer a multitude of mainstream manufacturers all they need to wheel out a similar performance orientated model (on par with the Yaris GA’s performance and price tag) tapping into a market more rediscovered - by a manufacturer - rather than reawakened. The market isn’t huge; it is, however, lucrative and open to two or three more offerings. Imagine a Skoda Fabia VRS R5, a Peugeot 208 GTRX and a Yaris GR all duking it out for sales...  

Both the 208 and Fabia can draw on larger engines than currently available in Europe - the 208 is fitted with a 1600ccm engine in Argentina or could use the old GTI version whilst the Fabia could use the Polo GTi 2 ltr engine for easy power... The Fabia and 208 both not only have the heritage of ‘hot’ versions in their model history as well as rich motorsport heritage too – bear in mind the Yaris is, ironically, the least successful in motorsport terms of the three mentioned cars. Skoda have dominated R5 sales and results for numerous years, so much so that it seems shocking that the Yaris GR has preceded an R5 derived über-hothatch Fabia...

Hopefully motorsport departments can now wander into the accounts office and point out that there’s a market for a model based on all their hard work. Not only would it offer them an impressive halo performance model but it would capitalise on a renaissant market sector.

While Toyota will continue to offer diesel engines in some models, the maker insists it is reaching a point where no all-new car will launch with the out-of-favour technology. Toyota buys many of its current diesel engines via a deal with BMW, instead of developing them itself. • Tokyo Motor Show latest news Speaking at the Tokyo Motor Show, Toyota’s executive vice-president Didier Leroy said that he believes the firm is unlikely to offer diesel power on any new models from now on: “My personal opinion - and this is my personal opinion - is no, we’ll not launch another diesel car,” he said. “Of course, you could look at the much longer term but for now, for example, the recently refreshed Yaris that we started a few months ago, you cannot buy it any more with a diesel,” he added. “There are some diesels for fleet customers because they asked for them, but retail customers cannot buy it with a diesel. And that car is 25 percent of Toyota sales in Europe. “We also took the view, a long time ago, that we would not sell the C-HR [crossover] with a diesel engine,” he added. “At the time, the distributors were against my decision - and it was my decision. They said they needed diesel for the market. But I said, ‘No! No! No!’ We needed to follow the long-term trend and that is eco-vehicles.” Leroy also called on EU legislators to come up with an equivalence formula that will allow car makers to agree on proposed CO2 emissions cuts running through to 2030, while still switching the official economy tests from the existing NEDC standard to the more realistic WLTP calculation. “We know the plan until 2020,” he said, “and there is a proposal from European car makers to continue the current rate of reduction between 2021 and 2030. So another 20 per cent reduction. We are waiting to see on this. But what would be the new target based upon WLTP? While Toyota will continue to offer diesel engines in some models, the maker insists it is reaching a point where no all-new car will launch with the out-of-favour technology. Toyota buys many of its current diesel engines via a deal with BMW, instead of developing them itself. • Tokyo Motor Show latest news Speaking at the Tokyo Motor Show, Toyota’s executive vice-president Didier Leroy said that he believes the firm is unlikely to offer diesel power on any new models from now on: “My personal opinion - and this is my personal opinion - is no, we’ll not launch another diesel car,” he said. “Of course, you could look at the much longer term but for now, for example, the recently refreshed Yaris that we started a few months ago, you cannot buy it any more with a diesel,” he added. “There are some diesels for fleet customers because they asked for them, but retail customers cannot buy it with a diesel. And that car is 25 percent of Toyota sales in Europe. “We also took the view, a long time ago, that we would not sell the C-HR [crossover] with a diesel engine,” he added. “At the time, the distributors were against my decision - and it was my decision. They said they needed diesel for the market. But I said, ‘No! No! No!’ We needed to follow the long-term trend and that is eco-vehicles.” Leroy also called on EU legislators to come up with an equivalence formula that will allow car makers to agree on proposed CO2 emissions cuts running through to 2030, while still switching the official economy tests from the existing NEDC standard to the more realistic WLTP calculation. “We know the plan until 2020,” he said, “and there is a proposal from European car makers to continue the current rate of reduction between 2021 and 2030. So another 20 per cent reduction. We are waiting to see on this. But what would be the new target based upon WLTP? Toyota unveils new Mazda 2-based Yaris hatchback for US Toyota has launched a new Yaris hatchback, based on the Mazda 2, for the US market at the New York motor show. The 2020 US Yaris will be built for Toyota by Mazda’s Mexican arm and is mechanically unrelated to the Yaris models sold elsewhere. The relationship with Mazda’s supermini can be seen in the model's basic shape, although it has a heavily reworked front fascia featuring the "hunkered-down, bulldog-like stance" that has become integral to Toyota’s global design language.  Toyota claims that the new Yaris hatchback is designed with urban dwellers in mind and says it has 450 litres of boot space. As with the 2-based Yaris saloon that was introduced to the US and Canada in 2015, it offers only a 106bhp 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and a six-speed automatic gearbox. A new Sport driving mode enhances acceleration response.  Inside, a 7.0in touchscreen infotainment system is fitted as standard, incorporating Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, voice recognition, satellite radio and sat-nav. The platform sharing agreement between the two Japanese manufacturers stretches back to 2015, when Mazda began production of restyled variants of the 2: the Toyota Yaris for Mexico and the Scion iA for the US.  Scion, Toyota’s youth-targeted North American brand, was shelved in 2016, so the new Yaris bears Toyota branding. In Canada, the 2-based Yaris saloon will remain on sale alongside the Yaris hatchback that's sold in Europe, rather than the new Mazda-built model.

The Toyota Yaris Lineup Is Getting the Axe in the U.S.

The Yaris just can’t catch a break. Last year it was reported that the hatchback version would be discontinued for the U.S. market. That proved kind of true, as the Toyota-designed Yaris was axed but replaced by a rebadged Mazda2 hatch. But now the entire subcompact car line, which launched stateside in 2006, is being discontinued.

“The Yaris sedan and Yaris hatchback will not be available for model-year 2021,” a Toyota spokesperson confirmed in an emailed statement. “Model-year 2020 will be the last year for Yaris. June 2020 will be the last month of production for the Yaris sedan and Yaris hatchback for the U.S. They will continue to be on sale through the summer and into the fall depending on sell down.”

One model year is an awfully short run for a “new” vehicle like the 2020 Yaris hatchback, but we don’t imagine Toyota spent too much money on the changeover given its near-identical interior and exterior to the Mazda2. Even the—ahem—unique front end already existed and was cribbed from the Mazda-based Yaris sedan (formerly known as the Scion iA and Yaris iA).

That half-hearted effort is reflective of the subcompact’s sales, which have been trending downward for the past few years. Through the first quarter of 2020, Yaris sales were down 69.4 percent from the same period a year prior. The automaker has also spent very little on marketing lately for its smallest offering.

Remember when the second-gen Yaris launched back in 2012? Toyota produced a hilarious series of ads around the surprisingly honest tagline “It’s a car.” The brand acknowledged the model’s basic-transportation nature and owned it in an unconventional way, and it worked at the time because that’s exactly what many drivers were looking for. But when you’re selling less than 22,000 cars per year—fewer than the number of Corollas Toyota moves in an average month—we suppose humorous, self-aware ad campaigns aren’t worth the investment.

Though the Toyota Yaris name departs from the U.S. lineup, the global Yaris will carry on in other markets. There’s also a Yaris-based crossover planned for Europe, but it’s unknown if that car might come here to fill Toyota’s subcompact gap. The one we’re most excited about is the Toyota GR Yaris, a special edition hot hatch with 268 hp on tap from a turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder and all-wheel drive with variable torque splitting capability. It’s a homologation special built so Toyota can go rally racing, but that doesn’t make us want it any less. How about sending a few our way as a consolation prize, Toyota?
