What Happened When A White Man "Became" Black In The 1950s America?
John Griffin had previously served in the U.S. military, where shrapnel caused him to go temporarily blind. However, in 1959, Griffin would do something even more trying: He would live for six weeks as a black man in the South.
It was blindness that inspired John Howard Griffin, a white author and journalist from Dallas, Texas, to write about color in the United States. In 1956, Griffin, blind at the time, sat in on a panel discussion in Mansfield, Texas about desegregation. Unable to tell the speakers' races from their voices, Griffin began to see color anew.
Under the supervision of a New Orleans-based dermatologist, Griffin would spend a week under a sun lamp, up to 15 hours a day, soaking up UV rays. He would also take Oxsoralen, a prescription drug meant to treat vitiligo, which would aid in expediting the darkening of his skin.
With darker skin, and a shaved head and arms, Griffin set out to the American South - starting in New Orleans and ending in Atlanta. Griffin had a few rules for this journey: Namely, that he would stay at black-only hotels, eat at cafes run by African-Americans, and travel with African-Americans. If anyone asked him what he was doing, he would be honest.
Just as his skin color changed, so too did the treatment he received from others. Describing what he called a "hate stare" he received in a bus station lobby, Griffin wrote:
"I walked up to the ticket counter. When the lady ticket-seller saw me, her otherwise attractive face turned sour, violently so. This look was so unexpected and so unprovoked I was taken aback.
'What do you want?' she snapped.
Taking care to pitch my voice to politeness, I asked about the next bus to Hattiesburg. She answered rudely and glared at me with such loathing I knew I was receiving what the Negroes call the hate stare'. It was my first experience with it. It is far more than the look of disapproval one occasionally gets. This was so exaggeratedly hateful I would have been amused if I had not been so surprised."
John Griffin wrote a book called Black Like Me about his experience. The book was published in 1961 and was later translated into 14 languages and a film. The harrowing stories within its pages, coupled with Griffin's own transformation, generated strong public responses.
•••
Me sorprendió.”

I just wanted to see him 😩
What a great missed opportunity they had for 𝗧𝗼𝗺 to appear as a variant of 𝗪𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲 in 𝑫𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒑𝒐𝒐𝒍 𝑨𝒏𝒅 𝑾𝒐𝒍𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒆 😤 Other actors were also rumoured for variants of the character: 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝗹 𝗥𝗮𝗱𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲 and 𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗻, and only 𝗛𝗲𝗻𝗿𝘆 𝗖𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗹 appeared...
And we were going to have him, because 1 year ago the news in 𝘾𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙢𝙖𝙨𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙘𝙨 about 𝗧𝗼𝗺 and 𝗛𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗝𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗺𝗮𝗻 had arrived together to stay in a hotel near the studios where the film was being filmed and they had a very similar look came out 👀
(Remember that in fact 𝗧𝗼𝗺 was going to appear as the character in one of the 𝑿-𝑴𝒆𝒏 films but in the end it didn't happen)
Did they change their mind at the last minute or what happened to that 🤨?
Anyway, I don't know what could have happened, but it would have been nice to see it in this movie 😅
⠀⠀⠀⠀
Yo solo quería verlo a él 😩

"I hate how you never get hangovers." Georgina groaned as she sluggishly walked into the kitchen. Antonella looked up from her cup of coffee and chuckled. "I'm special; that's why," she said with a shrug. "But don't worry, there's nothing a Bloody Mary can't fix." Georgina smiled gratefully and sat down at the table. She didn't know what the hell Anto put into her hangover bloody mary's, but it worked
She wasn't even sure how she ended up at Anto and Lio's house instead of her hotel.
Antonella came back to the dining table with a fresh glass of Bloody Mary, setting it down in front of her friend. Georgina took a sip of the drink and felt the alcohol and spices work their magic. She leaned back in her chair and let out a contented sigh. "Thank you, Anto," she said. The two women sat in comfortable silence, sipping their drinks and enjoying each other's company.
Georgina took it upon herself to check her Instagram, especially the Instagram page that she created for Mia last night. "Oh fuck," she grinned. It looks like Mia's page is blowing up already. As Georgina expected; now she just had to break the news to her.
"What?"
"Have you gone on any of your socials today yet?" Georgina asked,
"I didn't have time; I had to drag Lio out of bed, and then the kids kept me busy. Why?" Anto explained,
Georgina smiled and replied, "Well, you might want to take a look. We, or should I say our girl Mia, is all anyone is speaking about."
"Good or bad?" Anto asked with a hint of concern in his voice.
"Oh, definitely good," Georgina assured as she scrubbed Mia's as well as her Instagram feed, making sure they didn't post anything they weren't supposed to. "Thank god I didn't drunkenly post again. The last time I did that, I woke up to a lot of angry messages from Cris."
"Yeah, we definitely don't want a repeat of Cabo." Anto giggled.
"We all know where—" Suddenly, her phone rang, interrupting their conversation. Georgina smiled happily when she realized that it was Cris. "Hey baby, you're on speaker, and Anto is trying to bring me back to the living."
"Hey, Cris!" Anto greeted,
"Hey, Anto, I see you girls had a good time last night," Cris said,
"We sure did." Georgina smiled and asked, "¿Cómo están los niños?"
"Destroying the house as usual. I actually called about your text, baby."
"Oh, what text?" Georgina asked, curious.
"The one you sent me, and it seems everyone that's in your contacts has a video of Mia and Neymar from last night," Cris replied.
Georgina's heart skipped a beat as she quickly made her way to her messages. Anto stood from her seat, standing over Gigi's shoulder as they both watched the video. It was clearly taken by Georgina, who had the camera trained on the inebriated couple who stood before the alter. "Fuck—"
"Georgina!" Anto panicked, and they both watched on as both of their closest friends getting married off by a John Snow—"Is that John fucking Snow?" Mia and Neymar stumbled through their vows, slurring their words and giggling uncontrollably. While Lio, Sergio, and Georgina cheered them on as Neymar and Mia slid rings on each other's hands. Georgina and Anto couldn't help but feel a rush of excitement as they both watched the video of Mia and Neymar kissing. The way their lips met in their drunken haze was passionate yet intense; it would make anyone's heart race.
After the video ended, Anto and Georgina exchanged a worried glance, and the reality of the situation began to sink in. "Let's not think too deeply about this."
"What did you guys do last night, Gigi?" Anto stressed,
"Don't use your mom voice on me; I was just the camerawoman. It's probably fake."
"It looked pretty real, Gigi," Cris added.
"Ok, so what if they got married, it could be worse." Gigi tried to rationalize, but Anto was not having it.
Anto snatched her phone from her hand and said, "Cris, she'll call you back." Anto rushed out before ending the call.
Gigi gasped, "Did you seriously just hang up on my man?"
"Drink your tomato juice and listen up." Anto snapped, "We need to figure out if this was real or not, and if it was, one of you idiots still has the marriage license. This needs to get annulled as quickly and quietly as possible before one of your many contacts sends that video to the damn blogs."

Practice was finally over, and after the night that I had, all that was on my mind was the woman in my bed. I had to shut out the thoughts of her in order to keep my focus on the field today. If I didn't, then I'd let her consume my mind, as she did the day she left Brazil. Then last night happened. I found her. The way her hair fell in loose waves around her face, the curve of her hips as she walked away from me—it was all too much to handle.
But I had a job to do, and I couldn't let my personal life interfere with that. So I took a deep breath and pushed the thoughts of her aside. And when it was all over, the moment I walked off the field, my mind wandered back to her again. But this time, instead of feeling consumed by her memory, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. Maybe it was because I knew I had finally gotten her back into my life.
"Didn't think you'd show up for practice today." I closed my eyes, sucking a deep breath, before turning around. Kaylin M, my teammate, stood there smirking at me. He was the new shiny, expensive transfer at PSG, and ever since he's been here, he's tried everything in his power to outshine me. God, how I wanted to knock his head off his shoulders. I knew he was trying to get under my skin again, but I refused to let him.

Deciding Between Cancún or Cabo: Finding Your Perfect Mexico Getaway!
When it comes to dreamy beach destinations in Mexico, Cancún and Los Cabos always top the list, and it's not hard to see why! Both places offer a fantastic array of experiences, from excellent connectivity to the U.S. and a wide selection of top-notch hotels and resorts to an abundance of activities and some of the country's finest dining options. Los Cabos, nestled at the southernmost point of Mexico's Baja California peninsula, boasts a unique charm with its desert-like landscape meeting the merging waters of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortés. On the other hand, Cancún, situated along the eastern coast on the Caribbean, exudes a more tropical vibe that will surely captivate you. While it's true that both destinations are incredible for a beach vacation, they couldn't be more different in terms of atmosphere and experiences. To help you make the right choice for your getaway, we've broken them down into several categories, including beaches, activities, culinary delights, nightlife, and more. This way, you can easily uncover which destination perfectly aligns with your preferences and expectations. So let's dive in and discover whether Cancún or Los Cabos is the ideal Mexico destination for you!
Unlocking the Wonders of Cancún and Los Cabos: Your Ultimate Travel Guide
If you're traveling from the East Coast or Midwest, you'd likely have a shorter flight to Cancún. Meanwhile, those coming from the western United States would find Los Cabos to be a closer destination. That's the general rule, but as with everything, there are some exceptions. Cancún International Airport and San José del Cabo International Airport are both well-connected hubs in Mexico, offering convenience no matter where you're flying from. Now, if you're heading to Cancún, you're in luck, as there are direct flights from over 30 U.S. cities, including some from the West Coast. The primary direct options, however, are more common from major hubs such as New York, Miami, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, and Chicago. On the other hand, Los Cabos boasts direct flights from over 20 U.S. cities. While you'll have a greater number of daily flight opportunities from cities like Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Dallas, the airport also welcomes direct flights from major eastern destinations like Chicago, Atlanta, and New York City.
Exploring the Beautiful Beaches of Cancún and Los Cabos
When it comes to Mexico's top-notch beaches, you simply can't miss out on the breathtaking beauties of both Los Cabos and Cancún. If you're on the hunt for that perfect beach photo to make all your friends envious, rest assured that either of these destinations will leave you in awe. But hey, let's take a closer peek at each one and spot some intriguing differences. Cancún's beaches boast an utterly quintessential image that's straight out of paradise: imagine soft, sun-kissed white sands stretching as far as the eye can see, caressed by the gentle waves of the crystal-clear sea. Ah, it's the stuff of dreams! Especially in the Cancún Hotel Zone, where you'll find a jaw-dropping 14-mile stretch of sugary goodness, and that's not even counting the city's other alluring beach spots. No wonder travelers flock here – the water's warm embrace welcomes swimmers of all skill levels. Speaking of the best spots, in Cancún, you're likely to find them right in front of your resort, especially if you're chilling in the Hotel Zone. Oh, can you imagine the sheer bliss of strolling out of your room and into the turquoise wonderland right on your doorstep? Perfection! But hey, if you're up for a little adventure, consider checking out Costa Mujeres, just a quick 45-minute drive north from the airport. This place has got some fantastic newer resorts, and it's known for being a tad quieter compared to the bustling Hotel Zone. So whether you're seeking lively vibes or peaceful tranquility, Cancún has got you covered! Now, with these tantalizing beach havens, you might have a tough time deciding where to plant your beach towel. But hey, no worries, because whichever you choose, you're in for an unforgettable slice of Mexican paradise! Ah, the magnificent beaches of Los Cabos! While the beauty of these sandy shores is undeniable, there's a little something that sets them apart. Picture this: a warm golden hue embracing the coastline, creating a breathtaking contrast against the cobalt blue of the mighty Pacific Ocean. But, my friend, if your heart is set on spending your vacation soaking up the sun on the sandy beaches, there's a little caveat. You see, some of the beaches in Los Cabos aren't quite suitable for swimming due to the powerful currents they possess. But fear not, for there are still plenty of options to enjoy the water. Some beaches, nestled in sheltered bays, provide a safe haven for aquatic fun. Yet, the true gem of Los Cabos lies in the magnificent infinity pools scattered throughout the area. Imagine this: sipping your favorite drink, surrounded by the tranquil vibes and unparalleled view of the vast ocean. All this, without a worry about the currents below, thanks to the safety of the gorgeous pool. Now, if you're yearning for a beach where you can truly dive into the refreshing waters, we have a few recommendations for you. Seek out the swimmable shores of Playa el Médano, Playa del Amor, Playa Palmilla, or Playa Chileno. These hidden paradises will surely satisfy your aquatic cravings. And hey, if you venture towards the eastern coast of the Baja Peninsula, you'll be greeted by the calmer waters of the Sea of Cortés. Here, a whole array of beach-swimming possibilities awaits your exploration. So, whether you seek the golden beauty of the coast or the soothing embrace of an infinity pool, Los Cabos has something marvelous to offer for every water enthusiast. Dive in, and let the magic of this destination sweep you away!
Exploring the Best of Cancún and Los Cabos: Unveiling a World of Enchanting Activities
Mexico's beach destinations are an absolute treasure trove of activities, no matter which one you choose to visit. Both Los Cabos and Cancún offer an exciting array of things to do, ensuring a fantastic vacation experience. In these beautiful locations, you can indulge in world-class spas, play golf on breathtaking courses, try thrilling water sports, and embark on fascinating excursions. The differences between the two destinations might seem subtle, but they can significantly influence your vacation, depending on your interests and preferences. Cancún is a tropical paradise, enveloped by lush jungles that meet the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. It stands out as one of Mexico's most developed tourist destinations, carefully designed to cater to travelers seeking a remarkable experience. This city boasts a captivating blend of ancient and contemporary elements. In the Hotel Zone, you'll find luxurious shopping malls featuring renowned designer brands, giving it a cosmopolitan feel. However, amidst the dense jungles, lies a glimpse of the Yucatán's ancient past—the majestic Maya ruins. Traveling back hundreds of years, you can explore historic sites like Chichén Itzá, Tulum, and Cobá, discovering how the region's indigenous people once lived and thrived. An added delight is the proximity to some of Mexico's most incredible cenotes—underground rivers and caves steeped in Maya mythology and religion. Today, they remain enigmatic and mystical places to explore through diving or swimming, with various tours and excursions available for booking. Cancún's strategic location on the Yucatán Peninsula also opens up a world of adventure activities. Water sports enthusiasts can relish the chance to dive alongside magnificent whale sharks off the coast of Cozumel, a true thrill for marine life enthusiasts. The nearby islands, such as Isla Mujeres, Isla Holbox, and Isla Contoy, beckon travelers with their captivating charm, offering ample opportunities for exploration. For those craving an adrenaline rush, the jungle adventures are just as thrilling, with ATV tours, zip lining, and dirt biking gaining immense popularity among visitors to Cancún. Los Cabos boasts a landscape like no other, and this unique setting opens up a diverse range of activities to explore. Positioned at the southernmost base of the Sierra de la Laguna mountain range, where mountains meet the desert, the scenery seamlessly extends to the glistening sea. The proximity to Cabo Pulmo National Park, located on the Sea of Cortés, further enhances the adventure opportunities, both on land and in the ocean. From thrilling ATV trails and horseback riding to captivating scuba diving and snorkeling in the national park, there's no shortage of excitement for nature enthusiasts. One of the standout features of Los Cabos is its status as one of the world's premier deep-sea fishing destinations. The region proudly hosts one of the most significant marlin fishing tournaments globally, attracting anglers from all corners of the world. Additionally, the opportunity to witness majestic blue whales during their winter migration to the Sea of Cortés draws many visitors to Los Cabos. For an exclusive experience, head to Cabo San Lucas, boasting a grand and luxurious marina from which numerous boat cruises and adventure tours depart. In contrast, San José del Cabo's streets offer a vibrant arts scene, with a dedicated district hosting weekly walks and gallery events. Of course, adventure-seekers will find an array of surf beaches along the beautiful Baja Peninsula. Both Cancún and Los Cabos are conveniently situated within driving distance of numerous small towns in Mexico, each offering enriching cultural experiences perfect for day trips or short overnights. Near Cancún, you can explore the quaint fishing village of Puerto Morelos or immerse yourself in the bohemian charm of Tulum, known for its haute designs. For a more tranquil experience, venture south to Bacalar, where you can visit one of Mexico's largest freshwater lakes. While in Los Cabos, embark on a journey up the Pacific coast to the captivating and mystical town of Todos Santos or head farther north to La Paz, the vibrant capital of Baja California Sur. Each destination promises its own set of unforgettable memories, making your trip to Mexico an extraordinary and diverse adventure.
Delicious Delights in Cancún and Los Cabos: Unraveling the Culinary Gems of Mexico's Tropical Paradise
Gastronomy is often what sets destinations in Mexico apart. Regional specialties make Mexican dining a constant adventure. Seafood is important in all coastal kitchens in the country, with shellfish, marlin, tuna, and octopus taking center stage. And, of course, you'll find tasty tacos everywhere you go. But Cancún cuisine also focuses on traditional Maya ingredients and recipes, like slow-roasted pork, or fish that has been steamed in banana leaves. In Los Cabos, you'll find many more dishes that center around the sea, like smoked marlin, Mexican chocolate clam, and comida de pobres, a fish soup made with beans and rice. Dining experiences are also different in Los Cabos and Cancún. While both are resort-centric, Los Cabos offers many more opportunities to venture off property to a fine-dining restaurant. Cabo San Lucas features some of the most dramatic oceanfront dining options, like Sunset Monalisa, which serves decadent five- and seven-course tasting menus. You can also visit El Farallon at the Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal, a cliffside ocean-to-table restaurant that pairs seafood with some of France's finest Champagnes. San José del Cabo is gaining a reputation as one of the best places in Mexico for farm-to-table experiences. Just outside the city are three beautifully designed restaurants that source their ingredients on-site: Acre, Flora Farms, and Tamarindos. Cancún has many fine-dining restaurants as well, but the culinary experience tends to focus more on the resorts. And the majority of visitors to Cancún dine at their hotels. You'll still find elegant restaurants in Cancún, many of which face the Nichupte Lagoon, as well as international chains, but travelers here mostly enjoy staying in a resort that meets all of their food needs.
Nightlife in Cancún and Los Cabos
When you imagine the vibrant nightlife of Cancún or Los Cabos, thoughts of Señor Frog's and cheap tequila might naturally come to mind. And, well, you wouldn't be entirely off-base—both Cancún and Los Cabos, especially Cabo San Lucas, have indeed earned lively reputations over the years, thanks to the wild party scene during spring break. However, it's important to note that these destinations have evolved, and their identities have expanded beyond those stereotypes. Nowadays, both Cancún and Los Cabos cater to a diverse crowd, offering a wide spectrum of experiences. Sure, you'll still encounter places that let you dance the night away on both coasts, but the preconceived notions of constant wild partying no longer solely define these places. In Cancún, the party spirit is alive throughout the year, with lively beach clubs and discos like the famous Coco Bongo, where the bass thumps energetically. On the other hand, Los Cabos, and particularly Cabo San Lucas, exudes a similar energetic vibe, especially during the spring months. However, it's worth mentioning that San José del Cabo, another part of Los Cabos, is celebrated more for its intimate bars, cozy cafes, and restaurants that offer a more laid-back atmosphere and feature enjoyable live music that won't overwhelm your senses.
Which Destination is More Budget-Friendly: Cancún or Los Cabos?
Planning a trip to either Cancún or Los Cabos? Well, your budget plays a crucial role in making that decision. Your travel style will determine which destination suits you better, but generally speaking, Cancún tends to be the more pocket-friendly option. Why is that? Well, it's because Cancún offers a wider range of accommodations, increasing the chances of snagging a great deal, especially if you opt to stay in the downtown area rather than the more expensive Hotel Zone. On the other hand, if you're someone who enjoys indulging in luxury and pampering, Los Cabos might be right up your alley. This paradise is brimming with lavish all-inclusive resorts that come with higher price tags. So, if you're willing to splurge and treat yourself to an extravagant experience, Los Cabos has got you covered. However, keep in mind that it might take a toll on your wallet. Ultimately, both destinations offer unique experiences, and it boils down to your personal preferences and budget. Whether you're craving a more affordable adventure in Cancún or seeking a lavish escape in Los Cabos, one thing's for sure – Mexico's beauty and charm will captivate you no matter where you decide to go.
Ensuring Your Safety: A Guide to Enjoying Cancún and Los Cabos
When it comes to traveling, safety is always at the top of the list, especially for those who are exploring a new destination. If you're a newbie to a certain place, it's only natural to be concerned. But fear not! The U.S. State Department has some advice for American travelers: exercise increased caution while journeying to Quintana Roo or Baja California Sur. Being cautious is never a bad idea, right? Now, let's talk about two incredible spots: Cancún and Los Cabos. Good news! They are generally safe places to visit. But here's the key: follow the local laws and steer clear of any unnecessary trouble. If you do that, you'll have an amazing and safe vacation, just like you would in most destinations around the world. So, pack your bags, be smart, and get ready for an unforgettable adventure!
Explore the Stunning Hotels of Cancún and Los Cabos

Three types of hotel search engines
First, it helps to understand the playing field. There are basically three types of websites we use to find hotels: OTAs (online travel agencies); the hotels’ own websites, which may offer deals OTAs can’t match (and you should always double-check yourself before booking); and aggregators, or meta-search engines, which don’t actually handle reservations—they trawl both OTAs and hotel sites to return a compendium of results, then send you to your choice for booking.
We tested both OTAs and the aggregators that search them. Why include smaller OTAs at all when there are aggregators that check them? Well, some aggregators aren’t nearly as good as they should be at combing through those booking engines. In fact, in our latest survey, the site that found the most hotels was actually an OTA, and not an aggregator that supposedly canvasses it. You’d think their results would be at least as good—but we found they weren’t.
Warning: Many aggregators will discover a number of booking sites that have amazingly low prices—but often sketchy track records. Whenever you find a result for a company you’ve never heard of, do a quick search for its name and the words “review” or “scam,” and also check out its reputation on the Better Business Bureau (BBB.org) before giving them your money.
As a side note, membership sometimes has its privileges, at least at some OTA sites where signing in can often net you 4% to 6% in savings. Aggregator member savings are more sporadically available, and on the order of just 1% to 2%. We used the plain “non-member” rates for all our tests.
How We Determined our Ranking
We threw 60 room reservation scenarios at the major sites to determine which found the cheapest rates and the most options.
To start, we tallied the number of choices each contender could rustle up in seven major tourist cities: Orlando, New Orleans, San Francisco, Rome, London, Bangkok, and Buenos Aires.
Then, for each city, we searched for the lowest rates each site could find at four specific downtown hotels in varying price ranges for a mid-week, shoulder-season stay three months out. By avoiding high-season or holiday spikes as well as last-minute discounts, we aimed for the most normal base prices.
We awarded points for finding the lowest rates on a given hotel—and subtracted points for returning higher prices than other sites—in a complicated weighted system designed to see which site would save you the most money consistently.

Nueva noticia publicada en LaFlecha
New Post has been published on https://laflecha.net/que-es-lo-que-mas-estresa-a-las-personas-cuando-viajan/

DONNA TART
Stephen King,The New York Times
