Amazon Launches its Latest Range of Echo Products
Tumblr media
Amazon continues to build up on its line of various hardware offerings, which include its Echo range of devices - the company today introduced several new Echo products, including the Echo Pop, Echo Show 5, and Echo Show 5 Kids. Amazon also announced Echo Auto availability for users in the United Kingdom. Amazon Echo Pop First up is the Echo Pop, which comes in Lavender Bloom and Midnight Teal colour options for £44.99. The speaker features a semi-sphere design, and comes with Amazon's AZ2 Neural Edge processor, with a custom-designed front-facing directional speaker for optimum sound quality in indoor scenarios. Of course, it comes with Alexa compatibility for audiobooks, podcasts, and even smart home controls for compatible smart lights and plugs, and other household essentials. Echo Show 5 For something with a bit more added functionality, the Echo Show 5 adds a compact display for video streaming, as well as security monitoring with Ring doorbell cameras. Users can also make video calls thanks to a built-in front-facing camera, something that even Google's Nest Hub Mini lacks. Amazon says that the new Echo Show 5 is "20 percent faster" than its predecessor, and packs an entirely new speaker system, with twice the bass and added clarity for music sessions, Audible content, podcasts, and videos. Like the Echo Pop, it comes with the AZ2 Neural Edge processor, as well as support for Matter-enabled smart home devices. The Echo Show 5 comes priced at £89.99. Echo Show 5 Kids Edition Adding to this new device lineup is the Echo Show 5 Kids model, which Amazon says is "designed from the ground up for kids, with kid-friendly responses, jokes, explicit lyric filtering, and more." Younger users can customise the device's home screen with different themes, make video calls (with pre-approved contacts), and engage with Alexa for tasks like homework and alarms. Parents and guardians also have transparency and control via access to a free suite of parental controls through the Parent Dashboard. This will let parents adjust age settings, review activity, and even set bedtime limits. Echo Show 5 Kids comes in a more colourful, space-themed design and includes a 1-year subscription to Amazon Kids+ and a 2-year replacement guarantee. The device will come priced at £99.99. Amazon Echo Auto last but not the least is the latest generation of Amazon's Echo Auto, which is now available for UK buyers. The device comes with Alexa hands-free features for cars that don’t have included AI support, and comes in a new, slimmer design with an adhesive mount for more placement flexibility in your car.  The Echo Auto packs five microphones, which Amazon says can pick up a user's voice amidst external noises like music, your car's AC, and road noise. Echo Auto allows Alexa to play music, make calls, pair with compatible Echo devices, and a whole host of voice commands. it also supports remote control for compatible smart home devices, which means you can still tweak your lights and thermostats while on the move - it's priced at £59.99. The new “Create with Alexa” feature on Amazon's Echo Show devices uses AI to create unique five- to 10-line animated stories that kids and parents can use in place of traditional bedtime stories.
All stories come with custom illustrations, background music, and sound effects for each scene, and Amazon says that there are "multiple guardrails" to ensure that all content remains family-friendly.

You’ve mastered the perfect rotation for your Zoom backgrounds. You’ve broken the Guinness World Record for consecutive hours doom-scrolling. You’ve finished reading White Fragility and have made the pledge to be a better ally. This year is going down in the history books as one of the toughest in our generation due to the tragic losses of life due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to COVID-19, the entire music industry has come to a stand still and a lot of our colleagues have lost their jobs and the future of our industry is going to look very different. Arplis - News: Upgrade your laundry room with the best smart washing machines
As the Internet of things grows, and our homes become increasingly smart, more and more appliances that boast connectivity are becoming within reach of the average household. Washing machines are a great example of that. They are still at the higher end of the market, but with the amazing benefits they bring, more people are choosing to invest. Our overall best pick, the Samsung High-Efficiency Front Load Washer with AddWash Door, comes with the ability for remote control and monitoring and gives you alerts when your washing is complete. With these benefits and more, we've found some of the best smart washers to suit your needs. Best Overall: Samsung High-Efficiency Front Load Washer with AddWash Door Samsung's more affordable smart option is its 4.5 cubic feet capacity washing machine with the option of Wi-Fi connectivity and the ability to hook up to the Samsung Smart Things App. This washer can easily handle a king-size comforter. Looks-wise, it comes in traditional white or this handsome black stainless steel that boasts a practical, fingerprint-resistant finish. Features of note are its ability to wash a full load in as little as 36 minutes when on the "Super Speed" setting, and a stream treatment option that releases steam from the bottom of the tub for improved saturation. This steam functionality works well to really deep clean clothing with positive reviews from hundreds who have been pleased with the results. This machine is an excellent choice for families with kids as it boasts Samsung's Vibration Reduction Technology Plus. It has special sensors that keep even heavy loads balanced for quieter washing cycles, so you can get away with using it past bedtime. We also love this machine's "AddWash" ability that allows you, after the cycle has started, to chuck in items you'd forgotten to include in the load. It's a lifesaver for the forgetful among us. The smart functionality comes in with the ability to control and monitor this machine remotely. You can see the remaining cycle time, receive alerts when the cycle is finished, and schedule cycles. This is all done via your home's Wi-Fi network and the Android and iPhone Samsung Smart Things App. Pros: AddWash functionality Super Speed setting Quiet operation Steam functionality Cons: No voice control No anti-allergen cycle Best Overall Samsung High-Efficiency Front Load Washer with AddWash Door $1,000 at Best Buy $1,080 at Home Depot Swashing machine With a decent companion app looking after the smart side of things, this machine also boasts capable tech on the washing front. Best Value: Kenmore 41463 Smart Wi-Fi Enabled Front Load Washer with Accela Wash The Kenmore 41463 is a budget-friendly option that will give you the most bang for your buck. It's 4.5 cubic feet capacity smart washing machine that works with the Kenmore Smart App, and can also be controlled using the Kenmore Smart Skill on the Amazon Alexa platform. That generous capacity makes it an excellent choice for larger households. Like the GE washing machine, this model can handle bulk capacities of detergent. You fill up the machine's Load & Go XL Plus dispenser with detergent and fabric softener with enough product to last 40 loads, and then get notifications when you're running low, which is a pretty convenient feature. Washing functionality includes a Steam Clean option, a Sanitize cycle with higher temps to kill bacteria, a Cold Wash option, and that always useful Quick Wash cycle. This machine also has the fantastic ability to keep clothes fresh for up to 12 hours after the cycle has ended. You simply hit the "Wash & Dry" button before the cycle starts, and after it's done. A built-in fan activates, gently tumble drying the clothes until you're ready to remove them. The Whirlpool app lets you set, start, or pause the wash cycle and monitor progress remotely. That touchscreen panel doesn't just look good — it learns, adapts, and suggests customized presets based on what you've selected before. You can also customize up to 30 of your own favorite washing routines. The touchscreen is very easy to use, with many stating they were able to start using this machine without looking at the instructions. Whirlpool has plans for the companion app that includes controlling the machine with a voice-controlled device, and the ability to reorder your preferred laundry supplies automatically. Keep it clean The smart washing market has grown rapidly in recent years. You can now get machines that vary from capacities of 2.8 cubic feet to a vast seven cubic feet. There are also combined washer/dryer options and top-loading models too. To keep this comparison guide tight, we've concentrated on front-loading machines that range from 4.5 to five cubic feet in capacity, which is the perfect size for an average household. All these machines can be controlled and monitored via a companion app. In the case of our best overall pick, the Samsung High-Efficiency Front Load Washer with AddWash Door, you can remotely monitor the progress of your wash and even schedule cycles to start from the comfort of your couch. The app also lets you know when the wash is complete, a handy function to remind you to grab your clean washing while it's still fresh. The Samsung option also offers some solid technology on the actual washing side of things. With a vibration-reducing design, it runs quietly, so it's not going to disturb the whole household. You can also add any items you've forgotten after the wash has started, which is very convenient. It's especially ideal for when you've just hit the "On" button and turn around to see a stray sock on the utility room floor, and it may be the perfect fit for your home. What is the future of AI in entertainment?
Tumblr media
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming our lives in more ways than we can imagine. While many applications of AI have already found endorsement in the manufacturing and automobile sector, it is the enormous impact AI is having on the Media and Entertainment sector that has captured our imagination owing to the new technology’s real near-term applications for the industry. Sunny Dhillon, Co-Founder, Signia Ventures with $160m+ under management in his blog explains some of the most exciting examples to underscore AI’s power to change the way we consume entertainment and media.
Bedtime Stories will Never be the Same Again
Using AI, companies like Novel Effect are producing interactive voice content that summons a menagerie of sound effects to accompany a parent’s narration of the favourite story of their children. Now add to it the interactive hologram technology provided by companies like 8i, one would not be surprised seeing the children playing with interactive characters. Thanks to companies like Earplay, which is building hands-free and eyes-free choose-your-own-adventure experiences for mobile devices, moms can relax after tucking their kids in the bed as an interactive audio story plays with her voice in the background.
See the Disneyland Come Alive
AI is emerging as the top contender in transforming the way we cherish our theme park fantasies. Imagine a semi-autonomous R2D2 droid built by zippy Resources and Information. in Disneyland’s upcoming Star Wars Land. With its sidewalk-safe autonomous navigation technology, it could basically be a self-driving robot that’s safe around kids and families, giving wings to their imagination in a ‘futuristic’ world. Or think about Mickey Mouse talking and responding to questions in Disneyland in his recognizable chuckling voice. AI has the power to make all this possible by bringing our childhood memories to life.
Listen to News in Your Favourite Celebrity’s Voice
Voice-interactive AI like Siri and Alexa is already on its way to become the next big thing. However, companies Lyrebird are adding more capabilities to it by enabling it to borrow voices from celebrities. The company enables voices to be mimicked from the perspective of pitch, tone, and modulation. So, in future who wouldn’t love to listen to news read out by Taylor Swift or having their queries about the weather answered by the smooth timbres of Morgan Freeman. However, this technology has a flip side too as it was recently proven by the University of Washington where a digital Barack Obama was created with astounding similarities of speech and demeanour to underscore the real treat of fake videos influencing public opinion.
Escape the Post-Apocalyptic Earth
Applying Artificial Intelligence to virtual reality has the potential to make almost every aspect of it more immersive and believable. Gaming companies like Rival Theory have already made strides in this space. Its Rain AI engine is being used by more than 100,000 game developers around the world. The 2016 Game Developers Conference saw a short film featuring an interactive VR character — Gary the Gull — built using the same platform.
Automation of Animation
Midas Touch Interactive has created a tool that automates the process for animating 2D characters. Pixar too is leveraging deep-learning techniques trained on “Finding Dory” to detect and iron out grainy frames in its productions.
Advertisers Will Know How you Feel
AI advances will help advertisers to know customer’s tastes or moods. Emotion and facial-recognition technology will allow content providers to select what you see based on how you’re feeling. There are companies like TVision that are already measuring the attention audiences pay to TV content by analyzing “actual eyes on screen”. The videogame company Flying Mollusk Studio has already used software to produce a psychological thriller game whose difficulty changes with the player’s level of fear.

Amazon FreeTime for Alexa adds routines, kids’ podcasts and audiobooks
Amazon today announced it’s rolling out new features for its FreeTime service for parents and children, which recently started working with Alexa, allowing parents to control children’s experience with the personal assistant. Now, the FreeTime service for Alexa will also support routines – the combination of voice commands that can be kicked off with a single phrase. For example, parents could say, “Alexa, it’s bedtime” to have Alexa turn off the lights, lower the shades and play lullabies. The company said it’s also adding other features for kids, as well, including podcasts and over 1,000 audiobooks for kids.
More to come….

Amazons Echo Dot Kids Edition gains new skills from Disney and others
Amazon is today rolling out a set of new features to its Echo Dot Kids Edition devices — the now $70 version of the Echo Dot smart speaker that ships with a protective case and a year’s subscription to Amazon FreeTime, normally a $2.99 per month subscription for Prime members. Now joining the Kids Edition’s parental controls and other exclusive content are new skills from Disney, Hotel Transylvania and Pac-Man, as well as a calming “Sleep Sounds” skill for bedtime.
There are now four new skills that play sounds of thunderstorms, rain, the ocean or a babbling brook, as well as an all-encompassing “Sleep Sounds” skill that offers 42 different soothing options from which to choose. New parents may be glad to know that this includes baby-soothing sounds like cars, trains and the vacuum (don’t knock it until you try it, folks — it works).
Amazon clarified to us that while there is a version of sleep sounds in the Skill Store today, this version launching on the Kids Edition is a different, child-directed version.
Also new to the Kids Edition is “Disney Plot Twist,” which is like a Disney version of Mad Libs, where players change out words and phrases in short adventure stories. The skill features popular Disney characters like Anna, Olaf and Kristoff as the narrators and is exclusive to Kids Edition devices.
The new movie “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation” is featured in another new skill, Drac’s Pack, which includes monster stories, songs and jokes.
Meanwhile, Pac-Man Stories is a skill that includes interactive stories for the whole family that work similar to choose-your-own-adventures — that is, the decisions you make will affect the ending.
Both of these are broadly available on Alexa, meaning they don’t require a Kids Edition device to access.
Stories, however, does appear to be one of the areas Amazon is investing in to make its Alexa-powered speakers more appealing to families with young children. The company recently decided to stop working on its chat stories app Amazon Rapids, saying it will instead continue to adapt those Amazon Rapids stories for the Alexa platform.
Amazon also tries to market the Echo Dot Kids Edition to families by making some kid-friendly content, like Disney Plot Twist, available exclusively to device owners.
For example, it already offers with this device exclusive kid skills like Disney Stories, Loud House Challenge, No Way That’s True, Funny Fill In, Spongebob Challenge, Weird but True, Name that Animal, This or That, Word world, Ben ten, Classroom thirteen, Batman Adventures and Climb the Beanstalk.
But the Kids Edition can also be confusing to use, because the exclusive skills come whitelisted and ready to go, while other kid-safe skills have to be manually whitelisted through a parent’s dashboard. And there isn’t enough instruction either from Alexa or in the Alexa app on this process, at present, we found when testing the device earlier.
Unless there’s a specific exclusive skill that parents really want their kids to have, the savings are also minimal when buying the Kids Edition Dot/FreeTime bundle, versus buying a regular Dot and adding FreeTime separately.

Amazon made an Echo Dot for kids, and it costs $30 more than the original
Tumblr media
Enlarge (credit: Amazon)
Those with an Amazon Echo device in their home have likely already exposed their children to Alexa. Now, Amazon wants to give kids the opportunity to turn Alexa into their friend with the new Echo Dot Kids Edition. The hockey puck-like smart speaker doesn't look much different than the original Dot, but it comes with new "Amazon FreeTIme" content that gives kids new ways to interact with Alexa and parents more control over over those interactions.
The $79 Echo Dot Kids Edition takes the original device's design and wraps it in a kid-friendly, colorful case. Otherwise, the hardware is the same as the tiny smart speaker that debuted in 2016. While the regular, $49 Dot is considered a more affordable and accessible version of the regular Echo speaker, the Kids Edition costs more thanks to its bundled software. Amazon includes a two-year warranty plus a one-year subscription to the new Amazon FreeTime Unlimited service, an expanded version of Amazon's new FreeTime for Alexa.
FreeTime gives users "family-focused features" and new parental controls that adults can use to restrict what their kids can do with Alexa. Family features include "Education Q&A," allowing kids to ask Alexa science, math, spelling, and definition questions, "Alexa Speaks 'Kid,'" which gives Alexa kid-appropriate answers to nebulous statements that kids may say such as, "Alexa, I'm bored." Parents can also limit the times during which kids can speak to Alexa (like no talking to it after bedtime), restrict the skills kids can use, filter out songs with explicit lyrics, and more.

Amazon’s new ‘Alexa Blueprints’ let anyone create custom Alexa skills and responses
Amazon this morning is introducing “Alexa Blueprints,” a new way for any Alexa owner to create their own customized Alexa skills or responses, without needing to know how to code. The idea is to allow Alexa owners to create their own voice apps, like a trivia game or bedtime stories, or teach Alexa to respond to questions with answers they design – like “Who’s the best mom in the world?,” for example.
You could also create a skill that includes helpful information for the babysitter, which could be triggered by the command, “Alexa, open My Sitter,” Amazon suggests.
“Alexa Skill Blueprints is an entirely new way for you to teach Alexa personalized skills just for you and your family,” explained Steve Rabuchin, Vice President, Amazon Alexa, in a statement about the launch. “You don’t need experience building skills or coding to get started—my family created our own jokes skill in a matter of minutes, and it’s been a blast to interact with Alexa in a totally new and personal way.”
To build your own skill or custom Alexa response, users will visit the website blueprints.amazon.com and select a template.
At launch, there are over 20 templates across categories like Fun & Games, At Home, Storyteller, and Learning & Knowledge.
The templates are designed so you can just fill in the bits and pieces that make them personalized to your needs. You won’t need to go through a series of complicated steps, and no technical knowledge is required. The templates are even pre-filled and work as is, if you just want to try them out before making your own.
After you’ve filled in your own content, you name it and publish with a click. This makes the skill or response available to all Alexa-enabled devices associated with your own Amazon account. But it’s not available to the public or the Alexa Skills Store.
Families with Echo devices, in particular, seem to be a heavy focus for Alexa Blueprints. Kids have readily taken to Alexa, and today there are nearly 500 public Alexa skills built for kids alone. Families also often have private jokes and bedtime rituals where Alexa could come in – offering to “tell a Dad joke” or “start Anna’s story,” for instance. Plus, Alexa is designed as a home companion – controlling smart devices, playing music, setting timers, and offering information like news and weather, among other things.
But families aren’t the only ones would could take advantage of Alexa Blueprints. College students could use the flash cards custom skill when studying, while a group of friends or roommates could design their own trivia games. And Airbnb owners could set up a skill for their houseguests.
After you’ve created the custom skill, it will be available in the Skills You’ve Made webpage on the Blueprints site. You’ll also be able to enable, disable and delete your skills.

The battle over which tech company’s smart speaker will ultimately live in your house continues to heat up. Today, Facebook announced its new speaker, called Portal, in a bid to compete with Amazon and Google in the quickly growing market.
The smart speaker industry is already lucrative: According to eMarketer’s 2018 forecast, 90 million Americans have a smart speaker in their home, and that number is growing at an annual rate of almost 48 percent. These devices are generally wireless, internet-powered speakers with built-in voice assistants that perform tasks like checking the weather and doing online shopping.
The most popular ones are made by Google and Amazon, but Facebook is entering the fray. It’s looking for ways to increase its profits and to solidify its reputation for enabling friendly communication — an image it’s having trouble hanging onto these days. The company has been embroiled with scandals regarding privacy and communication, which could overshadow even its most impressive technological advancements.
Facebook’s Portal is arguably the company’s first big push in the gadget space (although it did buy virtual reality startup Oculus in 2014 for $2 billion, which sells VR headsets). Moving into an already crowded arena, Facebook is hoping to find an edge by tackling video chat.
The Portal (which seems more like a smart tablet than a smart speaker) comes with a rectangular high-definition screen. It also has a microphone that’s set up with Amazon’s voice assistant, Alexa, an interesting move considering Facebook’s device is meant to be in competition with Amazon’s Echo smart speaker.
Portal links up with Facebook accounts, allowing video calls to friends via Facebook Messenger. The high-def “Smart Camera” then uses artificial intelligence to follow a user around the room during video calls.
This could be a game-changer for video chat. Rather than users having to sit in front of a laptop or tablet during a video call, Facebook says its cameras will “adjust to follow the action … whether you’re moving around the kitchen or chasing the kids through the living room.” The camera also widens its focus as more people enter the room.
Facebook’s Portal is available in two models: There’s the standard Portal, which costs $199 and looks like a tablet with a large speaker built in. The Portal+, for $349, looks like a Frankenstein version of an Apple iPad attached to a Bose home speaker. Portals are available for preorder on Monday, and they will be shipped to customers in November. The speakers are being sold on the Facebook site and will also be available from Best Buy and Amazon.
It makes sense for the Silicon Valley giant to wade into this territory, as smart speakers are the next frontier for Big Tech. Marketwatch believes smart speakers will become a $30 billion business by 2024.
Facebook, up until now, has also been a purveyor of social interactions, and not gadgets. But connected devices aren’t ends in themselves, but rather a means to those ends: They’re entry points into people’s homes. As Kaitlyn Tiffany wrote for Vox after Amazon debuted its smart microwave, these connected devices are Trojan horses: “an inexpensive entry point, an easy graduation gift, a staple that sometimes needs replacing, and a not-so-intrusive and not-so-useful but also not un-useful household item.”
Gadgets from Facebook and Amazon, the thinking goes, will eventually weasel their way into users’ homes, regardless of whether they really need them.
According to eMarketer, however, one such device isn’t selling very well: Apple’s HomePod. Its $349 price tag is apparently just too high for customers. Facebook’s Portal+ is the same price as Apple’s HomePod, and its standard Portal is nearly half the price. But it’s unclear if shoppers will want to spend money on another gadget when their iPhones, laptops, and tablets do the trick — and the Amazon Echo starts as low as $79.99.
Portal also won’t be able to replace other connected devices, at least at first. The gadgets don’t have a web browser, and you can’t access Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, or — strangely — the Facebook app, TechCrunch points out. This is an intentional decision, company representatives told the Wall Street Journal: Facebook wants Portal to “focus primarily on communication, rather than browsing.”
Perhaps the better question isn’t if people will have enough money to buy Facebook gadgets — it’s whether they’ll actually want to do it.
Facebook boasts more than 2 billion users, so the Portal will largely rely on that communication network. It can use your Facebook data, for example, to make a suggested call list of the people it believes is in your closest circles, according to TechCrunch.
But will users want the tech industry’s least-trusted company facilitating video chats? This is, after all, the company that can’t seem to escape communication and privacy scandals. Just on the heels of its Cambridge Analytica scandal, Facebook is taking heat for enabling hate speech in Myanmar and being blamed for violence in India, the Philippines, Libya, and Germany. The company says it’s trying to put out the flames but has been widely criticized for being slow to act. (Its founder, Mark Zuckerberg, has also been scrutinized for his failure to take responsibility at all.)
And just two weeks ago, Facebook admitted a security breach had compromised the accounts of 50 million users — one of the largest security breaches ever. Are you interested in gossiping about your sister to your mom under this company’s watch?
The Facebook Portal is selling for $199 and has Amazon Alexa built into it. Facebook
To its credit, Facebook is approaching the launch with all of this in mind. In its marketing, the company is sure to note that Portal devices are first and foremost “private by design.” The gadgets come with camera covers that can be placed over the lenses “so that you are in control,” and the microphone is disabled with a single tap of the screen.
Facebook tells users that its AI does not use facial recognition technology, and that the company “doesn’t listen to, view or keep the contents of your Portal video calls.” It also promises that the calls are not saved on Facebook servers.
All of these details are no doubt being pointed out with Facebook’s recent privacy calamities in mind. They also call to mind recent privacy violations perpetrated by other companies. In May, a couple from Portland, Oregon, said their Amazon speaker recorded their conversation and send it to a random contact.
Facebook Portal’s video chat capabilities will have a couple of perks: It’ll have the same filters that make Instagram so fun, along with a feature called Storytime, which will feed a narrator a story via teleprompter, and animate the story onscreen in real time — perfect for parents or other relatives who want to read a child a bedtime story from far away.
But even those cute diversions might not be enough for customers to allow Facebook’s cameras and microphones into their homes right now. As one Facebook commenter said of Zuckerberg’s Portal announcement, “Hey, Mark. Why don’t you stop introducing new shit and fix the old shit?”
