I drove a $60,000 Acura MDX Sport Hybrid to see if the fuel-efficient SUV can take on Audi, BMW, and Mercedes. Here’s the verdict., Defence Online
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
The 2019 Acura MDX Sport Hybrid is a mid-size, three-row crossover SUV whose powertrain is related to the Acura NSX supercar.
Competition is intense in this segment, but Acura has a worthy entrant.
If you want an excellent luxury SUV that’s cheaper than a BMW or Audi, yet has great performance and lots of the tech, the Acura MDX Sport Hybrid is worth a look.
Visit Defence Online’s homepage for more stories.
We don’t lack for luxury car brands in this world. But the sheer magnitude of choice can be daunting. So if you’re having a tough time deciding whether it should be BMW or Audi, Mercedes or Lexus, Jaguar or Alfa Romeo, I’m here to help.
Consider Acura – I know I have. I’ve nearly bought an Acura a couple of times, and in the time I’ve been reviewing cars at Defence Online, I’ve driven many and enjoyed them all.
Acura, Honda’s luxury brand, debuted in 1986 and has been producing excellent vehicles ever since. The NSX supercar nabbed our Car of the Year award in 2016, and other Acuras have been finalists. As luxury brands go, Acura takes a lot of agita off the table. If you’re familiar with Honda, you know the company engineers superb cars that have a deserved reputation for reliability.
Acura adds a premium dimension to that, and has always pushed for technical innovation. That’s why I was excited to test the 2019 Acura MDX Sport Hybrid, which has a nifty three-electric-motor drivetrain coupled with a bulletproof VS engine.
Read on to learn how it went down:
Here we have the 2019 Acura MDX Sport Hybrid, in a fetching “Canyon Bronze Metallic” paint job. My tester was about $60,000, but the base MDX is $44,000.

Matthew DeBord/BI
The color is nice, but the overall design is pure crossover. Personally, I think the styling is more appealing than the Audi Q7.
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
The beaklike grille and the large Acura badge have been divisive, but overt time I have grown to kind of like them.
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
The Acura badge does double duty — it’s an “A” and also a caliper, with the latter stressing the Honda luxury brand’s passion for precision engineering.
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
And precision engineered it is. This “Japanese” ride is assembled in Ohio — and assembled beautifully. The LED headlights really slice through the darkness.
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
The Acura MDX Sport Hybrid of course falls prey to the design weakness of all crossovers: the backend is dominated by a huge (powered) liftgate.
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
The integrated spoiler and dual chrome exhaust pipes take some unpleasantness away, however.
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
And the tail lights are nicely coordinated with the overall rear design.
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
The Acura badge could even be called subtle.
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
Cargo capacity with the third row deployed is typical for the segment, at 15 cubic feet.
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
Drop the third row, and you more than double that, to about 40 cubic feet. Drop the second row and you’re looking at about 80 cubic feet.
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
The hybrid system is related to the powertrain in the Acura NSX supercar.
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
Let’s pop the hood and take a closer look.
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
The 3.0-liter V6 cranks out 290 horsepower, but the hybrid power plant’s three electric motors brings that to 321 hp. In real life, this crossover feels quite robust, and it can dash to 60 mph in less than six seconds. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission channels the power to the MDX’s all-wheel-driver system.
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
Let’s slip inside and sample the “Espresso” interior.
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
The seats are extremely comfortable without being overly smushy, and the moderate bolstering will hold folks in place if the driver opts for spirited motoring.
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
The front seats are heated and cooled, and the wood trim is downright gorgeous.
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
The rear captain’s seats are also comfy, and there’s a decent amount of legroom.
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
The third row is intended for short hops if adults are in the picture, or for smaller passengers if longer journeys are planned.
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
The interior can get a bit dark …
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
… so the moonroof is a welcome extra.
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
The rear seats are heated and have their own climate controls.
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
I generally find Acuras to be optimized for driving in a way that’s challenged mainly by BMW. The leather-wrapped steering wheel and analog gauges are purposeful.
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
The offbeat, pushbutton gear-selector take some getting used to.
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
We haven’t been huge fans of Acura’s two-screen infotainment system, but the additional screen does allow you to run the Acura system and Apple CarPlay or Android Auto at the same time.
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
Infotainment is controlled using a knob and buttons. The system has been updated — we sampled the new version in an RDX crossover — but for this test vehicle, we had to deal with the previous generation.
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
Even though it isn’t terribly user-friendly, it gets the job done. My test vehicle included Acura’s extraordinary ELS Studio premium audio system, which is among the best in the business.
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
Navigation worked superbly, and Bluetooth pairing was a breeze. There are also USB/Aux ports and numerous places in the vehicle to charge up. As you can see, there’s also a CD player!
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
If you like, you can tweak the system to display how power is being routed through the hybrid drivetrain.
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
So why don’t we fire up this luxury hybrid, drive it around, and …
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
… Render a verdict!
Tumblr media
source
Matthew DeBord/BI
It’s hard to argue with Acuras. My colleague Ben Zhang and I can certainly find things to pick on, such as the awkward two-screen infotainment system. But when we got down to the important stuff, the Acura MDX Sport Hybrid delivered a fantastic payoff. Some car companies simply build a fine automobile that checks off all the boxes.
Acura adds luxury to Honda’s already stupendous engineering and quality. It isn’t Mercedes-level luxury, but it’s about what you see in BMW and Audi. In my experience, Acura can’t quite match BMW for driving dynamics, and Audi offers some snazzier tech. But those brands cost more, and it’s not always clear it’s worth the extra scratch, given how well-executed Acuras are.
Driving the MDX Sport Hybrid ranges from relaxing to invigorating, depending on how you’ve managed the settings. Ben was particularly impressed with the buttery smooth power delivery, something we’d already experienced with the NSX supercar. I like the steering, which combined gentleness at low speeds with precision at higher velocities.
The MDX Sport Hybrid is brisk off the line, and in corners, it exhibits a refreshing lack of body away. It isn’t a sports car, but the “Sport” in the name isn’t a ruse. You can have some fun with it.
Otherwise, the vehicle is an ideal suburban family hauler that won’t make parents feel like minivan-piloting schlubs if they want to enjoy date-night at an establishment with a valet line. For an oomphy V6, the hybridized MDX drivetrain yields decent fuel economy numbers without sacrificing performance: 26 mpg city/27 highway/27 combined. And the MDX is crammed with driver-assist technologies and safety features, under the “AcuraWatch” banner.
The upshot here is that the 2019 Acura MDX Sport Hybrid is well-priced, offers good fuel-economy, and won’t bore you behind the wheel. At $60,000 well-equipped, it’s a bit pricey, but you’re getting a lot of car for the money (and Acuras tend to hold up over the long term).
It’s the thinking person’s mid-size, three-row luxury crossover.

The rear will also feature a small adjustment and there will be more chrome details and redesigned taillights.
  2019 Lincoln MKC Interior
Speaking of the interior of the 2019 Lincoln MKC, the automaker has not done great jobs. He will continue to be calm, comfortable and well equipped. However, there will be changes given the technology. The board will have the same 8.0-inch touchscreen with Sync3, but this time it will have the standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.
Other standard features include an electric tailgate, dual zone climate control, rear view camera, 9-speaker stereo system, keyless ignition and heated seats. In regards to security, MKC will now receive more standard systems. These will include automatic emergency braking, frontal collision warning, airbags, etc. In addition, neutral monitors, lane change warning and active parking assistance will be optional.
2019 Lincoln MKC Engines and performance
In the engine department, this time there will be no changes. The 2019 Lincoln MKC will acquire the equal engines because of the modern model. The base is a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that will produce 245 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque. The second option is a 2.3-liter turbocharged engine with 4 cylinders. This unit will be able to develop 285 horsepower and 305 lb-ft of torque. Both engines will be paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. In addition, there will be a choice between a front-wheel drive and an AWD configuration. Its towing capacity will reach up to 3,000 pounds.
2019 Lincoln MKC Release date and price
The 2019 Lincoln MKC is expected to enter the showrooms by mid-2018. The price has not yet been announced.

Retooled QX50 fills Infiniti's 'biggest void'
The 2019 Infiniti QX50, designed and engineered on an all-new platform, went on sale in March. WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — For Infiniti, the 2019 QX50 is a pivotal reboot engineered to fortify the luxury brand's standing in the U.S. market. That's why Infiniti executives here called the crossover — all-new inside and out — the brand's most important product launch since the original Q45 luxury sedan three decades ago. The compact premium crossover has been designed and engineered on an all-new platform in cooperation with Daimler AG. It is being assembled at a new $1.4 billion plant owned by Nissan and Daimler in Mexico. It went on sale in March, and Infiniti officials already expect the crossover to become the brand's top seller in the U.S. — ahead of the G50 sedan, QX60 crossover and QX80 SUV, Infiniti's top three U.S. sellers in 2017. It will do so partly by appealing to buyers shopping for both compact premium and midsize premium crossovers. It is priced below the segments' top selling competitors, the Mercedes GLC, Lexus NX and RX, and Acura RDX. Infiniti has been on a sales roll. But it is ready for a shot in the arm. After rising 11 percent in 2017, the brand's U.S. sales have slid 6.1 percent this year through March. "It fills the biggest void in the Infiniti lineup and lands in the biggest luxury segment," said Sean McNamara, head of product planning for Infiniti. "We've done our homework." The outgoing QX50, compromised by a snug second row and small cargo capacity, was largely overshadowed by the BMW X3, RDX and newer entrants such as the Jaguar F-Pace and Porsche Macan. It was rear-wheel drive and essentially a raised wagon version of the G sedan. {{title}} {{abstract}} Read more > http://www.autonews.com/article/20180421/RETAIL01/180429995/new-infiniti-qx50-crossover

Acura Celebrates 15 Years of SH-AWD With New Video
OMG. It seems like it debuted yesterday, but Acura is celebrating the 15th anniversary of its Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) technology.
The letter-happy torque-vectoring AWD tech made its debut in 2004 on the model-year 2005 Acura RL sedan; its primary function is to apportion additional torque to the left or right wheel to “overdrive” that wheel, creating a yaw moment that enhances handling and cornering performance. It’s hardly noticeable around town, but it effectively dials out understeer when driving harder, such as on a backroad or at a track.
Such torque-vectoring systems may be commonplace today, but back in 2004 Acura’s system was cutting-edge tech. To celebrate, a video was created to cover SH-AWD’s performance history, which now also includes electrified Sport Hybrid SH-AWD in certain models. That would be SH-SH-AWD if you really like abbreviations, but don’t tell Acura’s marketing department.
SH-AWD was among the first production uses of torque-vectoring technology, and Acura states that it will sell its 1,000,000th vehicle with the system later this year. While regular SH-AWD uses an electronically controlled rear differential to act on the rear wheel, the hybrid version uses two electric motors to do the same job. Sport Hybrid SH-AWD was first introduced in the 2014 RLX hybrid, and it’s also in use in the second-generation NSX and MDX hybrid. The MDX and RLX models use two rear-mounted electric motors to achieve the effect, while the NSX has its two electric motors up front due to its mid-engine configuration.
The latest version of SH-AWD can be found in the 2019 RDX and offers 40 percent more torque capacity at the rear axle, quicker front-to-rear torque transfer, and 30 percent quicker transfer of torque between the left and right rear wheels compared to the outgoing model, says Acura. Check out the video below for the full rundown on Acura’s SH-AWD system!

A Guide To The Best Luxury Crossover SUVs Under $40,000
Best Luxury Crossover SUVs Under $40,000
SUVs are becoming more popular in the automobile industry. A few years ago, SUVs were only available in large size. Today, however, the increasing demand has necessitated the introduction of a wide variety of the SUV concept. The midsize SUVs, for instance, lies between full-size and compact and this provides buyers with an excellent vehicle option. That’s why today we’ll look at the Best Luxury Crossover SUVs Under $40,000.
Midsize SUVs offer extra cargo and passenger space compared to compacts. Many of them come with a V6 engine for added torque and power, despite the increasing popularity of 4-cylinder turbocharged engines. Whether you are looking for high-end boulevard cruising or off-road travel, midsize SUVs can execute a variety of purposes depending on their specification and model.
What are the best rated crossover SUVs?
In the year 2017, approximately 57% of all luxury vehicles sold were SUVs. Manufacturers are researching and availing new models to satisfy the growing demand, which has been attributed to the SUVs fuel economy. An SUV offers excellent benefits such as big and flexible cargo space, all-wheel drive, and a sublime driving position. Many luxury car fanatics appreciate these factors which explain why they are purchasing SUVs regardless of the price.
Luxury SUVs are different compared to the non-premium cars. For instance, they come with superior structural quality and interior materials. Many of them provide soft suspensions specially designed to move smoothly even on bad roads. Power trains transform the fuel guzzling vehicle series into extremely robust 12-cylinder engines complete with numerous automatic transmissions.
Further, owning a luxury SUV comes with ultimate prestige. Searching for the ideal luxury vehicle however, can be an arduous task. If you are yearning to venture into the SUV world, purchasing a small crossover SUV can be cost-effective. Unlike the standard SUVs, these luxury crossovers come with elegant interiors, can be customized, and offer more features.
Some of them come with a prestigious badge which buyers can get for an extra price. The demand for luxury SUVs has continued to increase with the growing popularity of the crossover vehicle. These have merged and resulted in the luxury crossover SUV.

Acura Gets the Brand Back Together, Again
MARYSVILLE, Ohio — This marque’s cultural high point came in 1994, when The Wolf (Harvey Keitel) warned Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) there had better not be so much as one scratch on his Acura.
The movie was Quentin Tarantino’s Oscar-robbed “Pulp Fiction,” and The Wolf had lent Vega and Winnfield his Acura NSX as part of his effort to clean up their botched plan to retrieve their boss’ suitcase. And yes, it was product placement.
The movie came out just as the Acura NSX was getting some attention as not just the first Japanese car to retail for more than $60,000 in the U.S., but also as one that was worth it—an affordable Ferrari alternative that could be driven around town as easily as a Honda Civic. As an engine supplier, Honda had won the last of six Formula 1 Manufacturers Championships—four with McLaren, and two with Williams—in 1991, and for the last couple of years, the McLarens wore the Acura marque as its engine supplier for North American races.
For 2019, Acura has unified its styling, having eradicated the last of its much-derided “platypus” grilles from its lineup. Like everyone else in the industry, Acura’s sport/utility business is leading its passenger car business. For the first three quarters of 2018, Acura outsold Cadillac by just 1,243 units, with 114,483 to hold onto fifth place among luxury/premium brands in the U.S. It’s still well behind fourth-place Audi for the year, by nearly 53,000 units.
Acura marketing is playing up the marque’s technological advances and its longstanding image as a driver’s brand, led by its halo, the fabulous hybrid NSX supercar. The full-line event took place at the 170,000 square-foot NSX factory, where approximately 100 workers assemble the midengine car by hand. Here’s a quick look at what I saw and what I drove:
2019 Acura ILX A-Spec
The compact ILX is the last Acura model to benefit from a redesign featuring the new, five-point grille and the dual hood strakes. The rear license plate pocket has been moved from between the taillamps down to the bumper, giving the tail a stronger, more massive look.
The new design is handsome, if a bit anonymous, and it doesn’t fix the Acura ILX’s biggest problem. The ’19 model is a refresh, rather than a full redesign, and thus is based on the Mark IX Honda Civic and not the far superior Mark X Civic that premiered three model years ago. So the old 2.4-liter naturally aspirated four also is a holdover, combined with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission with torque converter.
This unusual hybrid tranny is very smooth. It launches the car and shifts more smoothly than even the best wet-clutch DCTs, though it’s a bit of a downer that there are no new Acuras available with a Honda manual, still among the best gearboxes available.
The four’s 201 horsepower is adequate, though not special. The ride-handling balance seems just right for a premium compact with somewhat superficial sporting pretensions, with a smooth ride and some compliance in the corners (our Central Ohio drive route didn’t serve up any particularly challenging roads). The steering is too light, though, and lacking in feel and feedback, and the rather heavy understeer is a reminder of how far the ’16 Civic has come in this department.
In its defense, Acura has shaved $2,110 off the base price of the ILX, bringing it in at $26,895 for 2019, near the top-spec levels of the Civic. The A-Spec, with its special paint options and spectacular blood red leather seats with Alcantara center-seat trim, is $30,645 with the premium package and $32,545 with the technology package. The A-Spec still lacks a front passenger seat power lumbar control.
The ILX is the bestselling premium compact in its class, among Millennials, Acura says [the others in that segment are the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz A220]. Choose an A-Spec with Still Night Pearl dark blue paint over that blood red interior, and you’ve got a vibrant look that’s hard to match in a Honda Civic, even the Si or Type R. Still, I can’t help but think that if Honda could be convinced to let Acura spend development money on something that’s not an SUV, an Acura based off the Type R, with a small rear wing and toned-down sedan body, slightly softer suspension but with the 306-hp 2.0-liter turbo and six-speed manual would make a dandy replacement for this car.
2019 Acura ILX A-Spec Specifications
ON SALE Now PRICE (as tested) $30,645 – $32,545 (with Premium Package/with Tech Package) ENGINE 2.4L DOHC 16-valve I-4, 201 hp @ 6,800 rpm/180 lb-ft. @ 3,600 rpm TRANSMISSION 8-speed dual-clutch automatic LAYOUT 4-door, 5 passenger, FWD sedan EPA MILEAGE 24/28 mpg (city/highway) L x W x H 182.2 x 70.6 x 55.6 in WHEELBASE 105.1 in. WEIGHT 3,144-3,148 lbs  0-60 MPH 7 sec (est) TOP SPEED 130 mph (est)
2019 Acura NSX
Editor-in-chief Mike Floyd has a thorough review of this supercar’s mid-cycle update, which features new, stickier Continental SportContact 6 tires designed specifically for the car, and retuned adaptive dampers, electronic power steering, Super Handling All-Wheel Drive, vehicle stability assist and stiffer front and rear stabilizer bars to work better with the new tires.
I got a total of about nine laps in the 2019 Acura NSX at the Transportation Research Center’s 1.9-mile road circuit, the first three on cold tires in sub-50 degree weather. I’d rather drive the old and new cars back-to-back to confirm Acura’s claims that turn-in is quicker and rotation around the corners in the midengine car is more progressive and predictable. All I can say is that the turn-in is about as close to perfect as you could want, without the too light nose that plagues so many rear-engine Porsches, and progressive rotation that’s easier to adjust than in a mid-engine 718. The Acura NSX is as easy to drive fast, confidently, as a BRZ/86 or Miata/Fiata, though with 500 horsepower being fed to the four wheels via Super Handling AWD torque vectoring.
Acura also showed off the NSX’s new Thermal Orange Pearl paint option. Several cars were making their way through the model’s bespoke factory during our tour. The only bad news plaguing the NSX is disappointing sales—it’s hard to imagine what Honda or Acura might put in this plant to supplement capacity utilization. Acura says it has sold about 2,000 NSXes, all built in Marysville, Ohio, and shipped globally.
In the U.S., Acura sold 850 NSXes in 2016 and ’17, while McLaren sold 1,193 of its Sport Series models here in those two years. Year to date, Acura has sold just 122 in the U.S., so far. So go check out the Acura NSX, rich enthusiasts.
2019 Acura NSX Specifications
ON SALE Now PRICE $159,300 (base) ENGINE 3.5-liter twin-turbo DOHC 24-valve V-6/500 hp @ 6500-7500 rpm, 406 lb-ft @ 2000-6000 rpm, plus three electric motors. Peak power: 573 hp/476 lb-ft TRANSMISSION 9-speed dual-clutch automatic LAYOUT 2-door, mid-engine, AWD coupe EPA MILEAGE 21/22 mpg (city/hwy) L x W x H 176.0 X 87.3 X 47.8 in WHEELBASE 103.5 in WEIGHT 3,878 lb 0-60 MPH 3.0 sec TOP SPEED 191 mph
2019 Acura RDX A-Spec
It’s reassuring to see that young Billy Rehbock had as much trouble with the two-screen infotainment system as I had. Acura lent me a white RDX A-Spec to drive the 204 miles between Detroit and Columbus, Ohio, and back, and I gave up on using the navigation system when I couldn’t find the keyboard to type in my destination address. Instead, I plugged in my iPhone and used Apple CarPlay.
The controls for changing radio stations, or to go between FM and XM are barely more intuitive, but once underway, the RDX was the right kind of SUV for this trip. It’s not too big, although it feels more like a midsize two-row instead of a compact SUV from the inside, and it’s comfortable and compliant without being too soft. Steering turn-in is quite crisp, and my only complaint about dynamics is the steering felt a bit busy on long, straight roads, needing a bit too much minor correction. May be the tires.
The A-Spec interior has the same leather-and-Alcantara red and black seats as the ILX A-Spec, but there’s also Alcantara trim on the middle of the passenger-side dash. Nice touch.
In Marysville, Acura showed off the RDX’s fourth-generation AWD software, which can shift up to 70 percent torque to the rear and up to 100 percent to a single wheel, just like Gen III, but more quickly. On a wet skidpad, the RDX was easier to drift than an AWD TLX with Gen III software, and on a rally-style rock-and-gravel twisty road, the RDX caught itself out of a slide more quickly, though the MDX with Gen III software was looser, and thus more fun to a frustrated rally driver like me.
The all-new, 2019 Acura RDX has crisper handling than most of its Asian and American premium competitors and with a much better ride than its German and Italian competitors. The 2.0-liter turbo is more refined, with more useful power than pretty much any other downsized turbo four in an AWD SUV. The Acura RDX has the rare combination, for an SUV, of crisp handling and good ride quality, like the Mazda CX-5, but with a more premium interior and a better, more powerful engine.
2019 Acura RDX Specifications
ON SALE Now PRICE (as tested) $46,895 ENGINE 2.0L turbocharged DOHC 16-valve I-4/272 hp @ 6,500 rpm, 280 lb-ft @ 1,600-4,500 rpm TRANSMISSION 10-speed automatic LAYOUT  4-door, 5-passenger front-engine AWD sport/utility EPA MILEAGE 21/26 mpg (city/highway) L x W x H 186.8 x 74.8 x 65.7 in WHEELBASE 108.3 in WEIGHT 4,068 lb  0-60 MPH 7.5 sec (est) TOP SPEED 130 mph (est)
The Classics
Acura also gave us time to drive perfectly maintained cars from its Torrance, California museum: a ’91 NSX Formula Red, ’01 Integra Type R, and ’03 3.2CL Type-S. I didn’t get time to drive the NSX, though I drove a couple of the last first-generation models about 2004 or ’05, and I can say the new NSX faithfully captures the spirit of that car. Acura doesn’t need to replicate the stiffly suspended, high-rev/low-torque model of the ’01 Integra Type R, though a new model following my suggestion above would make a good modern interpretation.

Road Tests: 2019 Acura RDX
Vital Statistics
Engine: 2.0 liter
Horsepower: 272
Torque: 280 lb-ft.
EPA: 22 mpg city / 28 mpg highway
Energy Impact: 13.7 barrels of oil/yr
CO2 Emissions: 6.1 tons/yr
Ever since the NSX made its return to the Acura lineup for 2017, Acura has been trying to sprinkle a little bit of its exotic magic throughout their lineup. So next up on that checklist is the 3rd generation of their compact crossover RDX. Let’s see what precision crafted performance adds to this already popular choice.
The first Acura RDX was a bit ahead of its time when it arrived for 2007. Not only was it one of the first luxury compact crossovers, but it arrived with a 4-cylinder turbo engine and a healthy dose of performance. When the 2nd generation arrived, it seemed to reverse course, showing up somewhat bloated, bland, and packing a V6. Today, it’s all about turbo-4s; and sport utilities that handle better than sport sedans did a decade ago. So, the 2019 Acura RDX goes back to its roots, to now join the pack.
Sporting a requisite 2.0-liter I4 turbo with 272-horsepower, the new RDX gets a big boost in torque, 280 lb-ft.; that’s 28 more than last year’s V6, feeling just as energetic from a standing start.
There’s also a new paddle shift 10-speed automatic trans, and of course optional all-wheel-drive, which is the latest version of Acura’s Super Handling All Wheel Drive.
This new RDX boasts a decidedly different look, though not so different that it doesn’t include current Acura signatures such as their diamond pentagon grill and jewel eye headlights.
Exterior dimensions have increased, including 2.6-addtional inches to the wheelbase, which is a significant step up; and allows for a much more aggressive, yet trimmer look outside, while still giving the interior designers a lot more room to play with.
A-Spec trim takes the aggressive new nature to the next level, with 20-inch alloy wheels, gloss black trim, LED fog lights, and larger dual exhaust tips.
Riding on an all-new platform with as yet no Honda brand counterpart, the suspension setup is MacPherson struts up front and a 5-link independent rear. The four available drive modes include adjustments to the adaptive suspension, with Sport+ making things the most responsive.
The ride certainly firms up as well, to the point we’d put Sport+ in the “occasional use only” category. But really, it’s the SH-AWD that’s still the star of this handling show. Turn-ins are very quick; and you really have push hard to approach this ute’s limits.
Technology is always a key Acura attribute, and there’s plenty to showcase here. Gauges are clear and comprehensive; and a 10.2-inch dash-top HD LCD display screen, is the centerpiece of a new user interface.
But it’s strictly hands off, as you must use a console touchpad for inputs. It seems overly complicated and there’s a definite learning curve. Fortunately, they haven’t gone overboard, as there are still manual controls for the basics.
There’s plenty of storage everywhere inside the NSX-flavored cabin, thanks that additional wheelbase; and the sportily adorned seats are as, if not more, comfortable than before. A panoramic sunroof is standard.
At 31.1 cubic-ft., cargo capacity is quite good compared to rivals; 5.0 cubic-ft. more than last year. Max, is up too, at 79.8 cubic-ft.
Packing in plenty of safety features as well, Adaptive Cruise Control with Automatic Emergency Braking is standard.
Government Fuel Economy Ratings with front drive are 22-City, 28-Highway, and 24-Combined; all numbers one less with all-wheel-drive, at 21-City, 27-Highway, and 23-Combined. So, it’s an average Energy Impact Score, burning 13.7-barrels of oil yearly, with C02 emissions of 6.1-tons.
RDX pricing starts at $38,295, with SH-AWD adding 2-grand more. And, on up the ladder you go, until things top out at Advance trim for $46,395.
The spirit of the NSX does indeed exist in the 2019 Acura RDX, as it has returned to where it started only better; bringing equal parts high-performance and high-technology, plus Honda-design reliability, to the luxury compact utility scene, without leaving the practicality or comfort behind. That formula was central to the original RDX. And while timing may not have been perfect then, it couldn’t be more perfect now.

12 Luxury SUVs Under $40,000
They say that 40 is the new 30. But what if it’s really the other way around? Below are 12 luxury SUVs starting in the mid-30s, all fiercely competing in one of the hottest segments today. While they can all be optioned far into the stratosphere, we wanted to see just how much luxury SUV you could get without crossing the $40,000 barrier. But as you inch ever closer to that price ceiling, either-or decisions abound: Should you spring for the all-wheel drive or the upgraded sound system? Navigation or leather seats? What do you mean Apple CarPlay costs extra? It’s these compromises that keep the field competitive and interesting.
It all comes down to space, features, and, of course, what matters most to you. We’ve listed some of the most popular options (and packages) below for easy comparison.
How will you configure your SUV to reach that magic number—without going over?
2019 Acura RDX
Ringing in at $38,295, Acura’s RDX is all-new for 2019. A full safety suite is standard, as are heated seats, a panoramic moonroof, and Apple CarPlay integration. A new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 272 horsepower drives the front wheels. Want all-wheel drive or navigation? Both options will take you over the threshold of $40,000.
You’ll Like: Highest horsepower in this lineup, top-notch safety ratings, mobile hotspot capability standard
You Won’t Like: All-wheel drive pushes the price over $40,000, and so does satellite navigation
Motor Trend’s Take: With many customers taking the leap from sports sedans to SUVs, Acura redesigned the RDX to take advantage of this migration. In our First Drive, we said, “RDX buyers will appreciate the moderately sharper response of Sport mode” as it “moves down the road with technical sophistication and reassuring confidence.” The Android-powered infotainment system has a “screen as customizable as a smartphone.”
2019 Audi Q3
With the lowest base price here at $33,875, there’s plenty of room to add features and still keep the Audi Q3 under $40,000. Satellite navigation will run you $2,100, and a Bose system is $850, but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not available at any price. Quattro all-wheel drive can be had for $2,100.
You’ll Like: All-wheel drive and navigation are standalone options
You Won’t Like: Dated tech and powertrain, cramped interior
Motor Trend’s Take: The Q3 was introduced in 2015 and hasn’t changed a whole lot since then. Our First Drive noted that while the “instruments and ergonomics are as near faultlessly clear as you can find, underneath it’s a little old hat.” The Audi Q3 is really showing its age when it comes to power, efficiency, and driving dynamics.
2019 BMW X1
If it’s bare-bones luxury you’re after, the BMW X1 at $34,895 fits the bill with eight-way power leatherette seats, seven-speaker audio system, 18-inch wheels, and automatic climate control. Class up the cabin with the Luxury Package ($1,550), which adds leather and uplevel trim accents. Notable standalone options include a Harmon Kardon 12-speaker sound system ($875), Apple CarPlay compatibility ($300), and satellite navigation ($950). All-wheel drive is available for $2,000.
You’ll Like: Optional comprehensive safety suite, individual options keep a lid on price
You Won’t Like: Sparse-looking interior in base model, upcharge for Apple CarPlay
Motor Trend’s Take: The front-wheel-drive X1 marks a dramatic departure from BMW’s rear-wheel-drive philosophy. Detractors might dismiss it as a Mini in BMW’s clothing, thanks to a shared platform, but in our First Test, we said the BMW-specific powertrain received high marks for its “smoothness and linearity.” Indeed, the best thing about the X1 is its powertrain. The rest of the package falls somewhere in the middle. “For an entry-level luxury crossover,” we concluded, “the X1 is perfectly adequate.”
2019 Buick Envision
While the Buick Envision may have the lowest base price here at $32,990, it still comes standard with heated power front seats and mirrors, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, remote start, and a hands-free power liftgate. You can spec an Essence model with all-wheel drive and leather seats for $38,940 and still add satellite navigation for $495.
You’ll Like: Lots of features for the money, terrific rear-seat legroom
You Won’t Like: All-wheel drive not available on base model, advanced safety features only available on top trim levels over $40,000, questionable interior material quality
Motor Trend’s Take: Buick reaches for the stars but settles for atmosphere, scoring on value while stumbling on driving dynamics. Driven aggressively in our latest First Drive, we observed, “The Envision mostly indulged us competently but without evidencing any joy in the process.” And in an earlier First Drive, we noted that Buick’s “Quiet Tuning” was anything but, as “noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) control is severely lacking.” And while the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine provided decent power, it was “coarse and loud on throttle and unrefined off throttle, vibrating the driver’s seat.” What price value?
2019 Cadillac XT4
New for 2019, the Cadillac XT4 slots in below the XT5 on both size and price, starting at $35,790. That’s a decent starting price, but options can add up fast: All-wheel drive is a cool $2,500, and satellite navigation with Bose audio will cost you $1,500. A cold weather package with heated seats and steering wheel is $850, and a power sunroof will set you back $1,500. Thankfully, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.
You’ll Like: Punchy 2.0-liter turbocharged power, four USB ports a nice touch
You Won’t Like: Advanced safety suite not available on base models, Silver/Black is the only included exterior/interior option—all other colors cost extra
Motor Trend’s Take: We haven’t yet driven the XT4 but look forward to seeing how Cadillac’s CUV competes against fellow luxury bite-sized rivals.
2019 Infiniti QX50
If bigger means better, choose the $37,545 Infiniti QX50 over its smaller sibling, the QX30. But what you gain in size you’ll sacrifice in features: The Pure trim level lives up to its name as no additional options are available beyond all-wheel drive for $1,800. Notable standard features include power liftgate, eight-way power seats, and automatic emergency braking.
You’ll Like: Spacious cargo capacity, high-tech engine, impressive fuel economy
You Won’t Like: No Apple CarPlay or Android Auto
Motor Trend’s Take: The QX50 wowed us with its standout design and engine. We noted in our First Drive that “the most competitive segment in the luxury car world just got a whole lot more cutthroat,” though the CVT transmission left a lot to be desired. Despite these quibbles, we concluded, “For the most part, Infiniti got the QX50 exactly right.”
