She’s started baking again. The other members of the Syndicate drop by sometimes to taste-test her recipes, and she shows them the progress she’s made in the construction of her underground city. They compliment the flower paths outside the city, the bridges and floating lanterns and the gorgeous high ceilings and furnishings within, the little subterranean forest and the waterfall, the decorations and details that make the cavernous space cozy. They see what she’s built and they praise her for it and it is exhilarating. She’s grown stronger day by day with the Syndicate in her corner; they pull her up to stand on equal footing with them, and when she expresses her concerns, they listen.
There are days, however, when she can’t bring herself to bake; on those days the heat of the furnace crawls uncomfortably against her skin and the knife block rattles in the corner with each item she sets down on the countertop. On those days she’ll climb. Buildings, mountains, trees—anything that’ll get her to a height where her lungs strain from lack of oxygen and the ringing in her head eases. She jumps, sometimes. They don’t know she does this. They don’t need to know; she’s strong enough to deal with that herself.
Yesterday was their leader’s birthday, and she’d left the party with leftover cake and cookies and brioche. Today is a good day; maybe she’ll share the cookies with Jack.

Tuesday:
He’s called the harbinger, the omen, the angel of death. Crows perform at his bidding and the great, lumbering bears of the north shake the ground as he directs them. He emerges from impossible battles with nary a scratch on his body. People across the earth have speculated that he’s a demon, or contracted with a demon, or one of the acolytes of the Blood God like the Blade. He likes to collect these epithets and rumors; when his crows perch on his shoulder to recount the news of the land or messages from his allies they update him on the tales they tell of the angel. They’re all wrong, in the end. Death herself graced him with her favor long ago to act as her representative on the mortal plane.
She’s been dormant recently; her absences had never affected him so strongly before, but ever since he’s entered this land, he’s felt weaker, more fragile. He watched his son destroy the country he founded with a haze across his vision, and then he killed his own son, and the act of it didn’t register until days later. Months fly by in a blur and the only person who can enforce any sort of focus is the Blade and so that simmering anger became his own and it fed into his own pain. There was something rotting in the land and it killed his son and he felt it his duty to purge it with the same TNT that destroyed his wings. He doesn’t regret it.
Today, he finds some measure of peace in building his training room. His son is back and everything is not-quite-broken and his body still aches.
—
Wednesday:
There are too many variables, too many uncertainties. He’s placed his fingerprints on too many projects and lives, and the guilt of his cooperation and his associations claws at his lungs. Dream, neutrality in the midst of war, Dream and his prison and the damned prison rules, Quackity, Las Nevadas. He doesn’t know what he considers his worst fuck-up: Tommy’s death, the torture he’d permitted in his collaboration with Las Nevadas, his betrayal of Ponk’s love and trust, or his inability to save anyone during the banquet.
The hotel stands as a testament to his failure to protect the youngest resident of the land. He plans detours around that plot whenever he travels between the bank and the prison; the little robot stationed by the hotel tells him the boy doesn’t come by anymore, and he knows automatons don’t feel emotions, but he grieves for it anyway. He sees his valentine walking along the wooden pathways and his heart aches to see the damage he had caused. He checks the prison’s security footage and he tells himself guilt has no place in his heart for what happened. He’s surprised the captain and the god and all the rest of the banquet victims still talk to him. But they do, and it gives him hope. His friends are back and free and even though one of them is trying to start a little scuffle with a god, today he’s having fun throwing weednip around and sliding down the pyramid with his closest friends.
The present’s a gift, and he intends on cherishing this moment.

Thursday:
He’s building a pub because Wilbur owes him a pint. He knows that man can’t be completely trusted, not now. Not since he died by his crossbow. But it feels good to be acknowledged as someone worth an apology, someone important. He has been abandoned and pushed aside and pushed into lava pits and into hell all within the span of a few months. No one cared. He hates it, he hates the way he’s been made irrelevant and a shadow of his friends’ stories. Even his plans for revenge had been inconsequential, unfruitful: the boy had lived and his accomplice had left him to brood in his own anger.
He’s held his grudges close to his heart and he’s let them fester and he won’t admit he’s tired of it all. If he lets go, then it all disappears and he’s really, truly dead, and if this is his afterlife, if all he can do is lag after the people he cares for, then it’s a fucking shit deal. So today, he’s continuing his work on the pub because he burned down his own home and because the hotel feels too sterile and empty, because he wants to have a space built with his own two hands where he can speak and someone will finally, finally listen. It’s not quite moving on. He’ll take it anyway.

Friday:
She tries to live by the code of kindness and reciprocity; that’s how she lived on the high seas of her youth, or so she suspects, based on the journal she found at the site of the shipwreck. Since the day she joined this land, she has made friends and found love and taken the young residents under her wing and vowed to fight against evil. She gives stacks of items to those who need them and she fixes up the holes in the road and offers therapy on difficult days.
The world isn’t as kind as she is. A country was erased from the map for grudges she still doesn’t understand, and no one will tell her the why discs, of all things, are so important. Two boys would have lost their lives to a monster she housed, had it not been for the money Tommy paid a mercenary for his aid. She mourned the loss of Tommy’s life as she fought to keep the hotel in his name, and when he requested therapy upon his resurrection, she was horrified at the effects of trauma he’d exhibited. The friends she’d tried to pull out of the Egg’s influence celebrated a young boy’s death and killed her son. And now this man has taken her friend’s turtle hostage for no reason she can comprehend.
She’s tired. She’s breaking; they’d presumed her kindness was a weakness and maybe it is. Today, she plans on destroying the red menace on the edge of her son’s land. It’s her turn.

Saturday:
He’s not sure how many sandstone blocks he’s carved out of the desert at this point, nor how many quartz chips and gold nuggets he’s pulled out of the Netherworld. The villagers know him by name and chat with him when he stops by to trade for emeralds and other goods. His hands bleed gold ichor from the opened blisters dotting his hands, and burns line the edges of his fingertips. Lately, his whole world is rushing by in colors of beige and yellow, green and white and blue. The color red started it, the scramble to build more and more—and it stopped it too, if only for a little while. Ponk asked him for permission to build on his land, told him it was a gift: a peace offering and an apology and a new beginning. It’s a silly build and it doesn’t match the aesthetic of the rest of his summer home, but it warmed his heart, to see the giant red refrigerator rising up from the top of the sand dunes for the first time. Ponk built it just for him. Quackity told him he was alone, and that he didn’t matter if he didn’t assert his powers like he did in the past, and he was wrong. Ponk stays, loves him for who he is now and not for the destruction he wrought.
He doesn’t know what to do now; his father destroyed the build for some grudge she holds against his friend, and he’s exhausted. He’s tired of being pulled into conflict. A vacation from all the tension occurring on his land would not be unwarranted, at this point—a few days, a week. It sounds relaxing—and he’ll do it, he’ll take a vacation, and he’ll tell Ponk that he’s in charge of the summer home later today. He has some packing to do.
—
Sunday:
He likes to splash around the pools and fountains in Las Nevadas when he has to visit. Sometimes he’ll climb up the needle and lean on the bannisters to feel the fresh air ruffling his hair and he thinks about jumping—the air turns hot and stale and the ground burbles up in orange and red—but his brother pulls him out of it, usually. Otherwise the place is boring. He’s not allowed in the gambling den or the club, so he hovers around the forests away from Las Nevadas when Wilbur and Quackity want to speak alone.
Today is one of those days. It’s fine by him; dealing with the two of them together makes him uncomfortable, with the way they push and pull him to their sides. The cigarette smoke lingering on their breaths remind him of the ravine, the explosions from the first war-second -Logstedshire-doomsday-nukes-prison. He’s escaped, for now. The air of the forest is crisp; he can spot flowers in the meadow ahead and he plucks them to form a careless bouquet. Alliums, lilies-of-the-valley, daisies; poppies and cornflowers and dandelions. He threads them together to form crowns and rings, places one on his head and cradles the rest to his chest to stash at home. It’s been a while since he’s made them; before he moved to this land he’d make them for his brother and his brother’s father, the dogs and cows and sheep around the farm. He feels like a child again and his lips twist at the bittersweetness. He’s found himself a bubble and soon Wilbur will barge his way in to speak of his loyalties and Dream and whatever the fuck he’s stormed up with Quackity, but for now, he’ll pick flowers and make chains and chains and chains that, for once, won’t drag him down.

Monday’s child is fair of face.
Tuesday’s child is full of grace.
Wednesday’s child is full of woe.
Thursday’s child has far to go.
Fridays’ child is loving and giving.
Saturday’s child works hard for a living.
And the child born on the Sabbath day is bonny and blithe, good and gay.

Death Will Have To Run
Character: John Cassidy [#4 of #52]
Series: Fallout 2
Song Inspiration: Blue Stahli - “Death Will Have To Run” [#731 of #3000]
Word Count: 824
TW: Alcohol usage.
“All on the open road
Where none will ever grow,
A journey toward the known
With countless miles to go.
So, death will have to run.”
Vault City was a glimmering utopia in the scarred and battered western wasteland. Perhaps smaller than other neighbouring settlements, but the sanctuary that the city’s towering concrete and iron walls and automated turrets promised to the residents were seldom found in the other cities that dotted the Nevada skyline. The Vault City courtyard provided only a sliver of what the main settlement had to offer, but for the settlers and outworlders living on the outskirts, they seldom minded, so long as the beer was cheap and Happy Harry’s store was well-stocked.
In the fury of the midday sun, the tin walls of the Spittoon conducted heat and the interior’s temperature slowly rose, alongside the bartender’s impatience with the Vault Guard that stood opposite him. The guard leaned across the rickety wooden bar and tapped his fingers across the countertop in what was no doubt a pathetic display to show the bartender his spiked knuckles.
“Are you tryin’ to threaten me?” The bartender had a dirty glass in his calloused hands that he continued to polish with a rag as he stared down at the young gentlemen clad in metal armour.
The guard laughed. “You have to be in your… What, seventies by now? You’re an old man, John Cassidy. Frail as a radroach, you’d be. It ain’t ‘trying’ if there’s not much to threaten in the first place.”
John’s eyes narrowed as he spoke, his voice low, “Then you should respect your damn elders, if you think I’m that old.” His fingers twitched around the pint glass as his gaze wandered to the sole other patron at the bar; a settler from Arroyo, clad in a Vault 13 jumpsuit, sipping a beverage out of a glass pitted and cracked with age. The quiet disagreement had caught their attention, but they were clearly trying to hide it, John noted with amusement, as their eyes swept over everywhere but the two men next to them.
“Watch your mouth, John, or we’ll issue you another fine.” The guard almost snarled as he turned to the stranger at the bar and motioned to the drink in their hand.
“That whiskey?”
The Arroyo settler quirked an eyebrow in confusion, but John cut them off before they could answer.
“I have a permit from your superior. Stop acting like an asshole for once, will ya?” John said to the guard.
“We’ll see.” The guard smiled. Venom was laced in his words, and the malicious joy that sparked in his eyes unsettled the bartender as the guard turned around and sauntered out.
In the wake of the argument, a heavy silence settled upon the Spittoon, as palpable as the midday heat. To the left of the remaining pair, broken streams of sunlight spilled in through the crosshatch window. The sounds of a world going by unheeded poured through the open door in the form of quiet conversations, the hoofsteps of the odd brahmin, and bugs chirruping. John let out the tension he had been holding in his shoulders with a heavy sigh as he looked to the alcohol distillery behind him, and his mind wandered. He wasn’t happy here, in Vault City. His failing heart twinged painfully in his chest; a reminder of why he was stuck in this godforsaken city to begin with. Slowly, he reached behind the bar and pulled out his heart pills. He was overdue for a cardio booster shot.
“You seem pretty fed up with this place.” The Arroyo settler commented.
John hummed in agreement. “This place ain’t worth a damn anymore, but I have a bad heart. Vault City’s the only place to get real medical care, so I figured I’d settle here, make a life, but…” He vaguely gestured to the door that the guard carelessly left open. “This ain’t much of a life, bein’ harassed by these guards. I’ll be out of business by the month’s end, at this rate. Then what will I do?”
The settler pursed their lips in thought. “You know, I need someone watching my back. Why don’t you come with me?”
John paused. His weakened heart beat in his chest like the grains of sand falling from an hourglass, a warning that his time was running out. Was it worth spending his time here in this dead-end town, living out the remainder of a life barely lived, if it only meant a few extra years granted by the medical care granted by Vault City?
The open road called to him.
Perhaps it was time to leave. A few years off of his life expectancy would be a welcome exchange for a better, more fulfilled time on Earth.
Slowly, he nodded. “Sure... Sure. Why the hell not?”
---
“So, what do they call you?” John asked as the pair prepared to leave the Spittoon.
“I got a nickname from back home,” the settler replied with a grin. “They call me the Chosen One.”
“Interesting title.”
“I thought so, too.”

Celebrating Woodstock - Part 1
With the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock festival round the corner, Harsha Prabhu looks back to visiting the US for the 40th anniversary
A Fairy Tale of New York
Parrots for Peace, Ecofest, Central Park, NYC, Oct 2009. Pic: Hans Lovejoy
Blog 1 on the Rainbow Dreaming US tour, covering NYC and Ecofest. Rainbow Dreaming is a photodocumentary on the alternative culture of the rainbow region of NSW, Australia. The curators were invited to set up the exhibit for the Woodstock 40th. See more at http://www.rainbowdreaming.org
Which Woodstock?
“Don’t even bother about coming to Woodstock for the festival in August,” said Nathan Koening, our host at the Woodstock Museum. “It’s mostly expensive hype. Come in October, when the weather is better and there will be more Woodstock-related events to celebrate the Woodstock legacy. And you can set up the Rainbow Dreaming exhibit.”

The Woodstock Museum were partners in setting up the historic Nimbin-Woodstock Connection in the mid-nineties, a rainbow bridge linking the alternative communities of Nimbin in north eastern New South Wales, Australia, with the whole hippie tradition of Woodstock. We had sealed the relationship by sending the Woodstock Museum an earlier exhibit from Nimbin, called Some Children of the Dream.
It’s now some fifteen years down the track. Walking down the main strip in Byron Bay I spy Hans Lovejoy sitting in a cafe, sipping on a latte. Hans, musician and journalist for the Byron Shire Echo, was in-between assignments.
“Fancy a trip to Woodstock?” I asked him.
“Which Woodstock?” he asked, undoubtedly knowing there were many: Woodstock, the town; the original Woodstock festival in 1969, which was held some 100 kms away; and the many, commemorative events down the years, held wherever the required permits could be obtained and the producers and sponsors lined up with the dollars.
“Not the festival,” I replied, “It’s a celebration of the Woodstock legacy.”
“Why not,” he said.
Lords of the Material Universe
The first signs were auspicious.
At Brisbane airport, waiting to catch the flight out to LA, we bumped into Elizabeth Thorpe and Debbie Lee. Elizabeth and her partner Ray, proprietors of Happy High Herbs, were the principal sponsors of Rainbow Dreaming and Lee, artist and designer, is an old connection from Nimbin. Elizabeth and Lee were headed for USA to open Happy High’s first US store, in Arizona. And Hans and myself were headed for New York, bringing with us the stories and pictures of life in the rainbow region.
From the plane, the New York nightscape glowed and flickered like some gigantic circuit board. “The lords of the material universe have nice real estate here”, said Hans. Towers of ivory, streets of gold. Would the lords be kind to us? Would they let me in, with my Indian passport?
At immigration, there was a blip: Had my passport ever been stolen? Why was it registered as Australian? The question in my head went something like: So this is what it feels to be at the mercy of dodgy databanks and the mood of the assessment officer. But it turned out ok. After a few questions, Officer Pena waived me through.
Did I have anything to declare, the customs man asked? Don’t touch my bag if you please, I have a haversack full of rainbow dreams, I mused to myself.
At the airport, the smiling face of Benny Zable, waiving a rainbow flag, greeted us. Benny, Nimbin’s ambassador to Woodstock, was the kingpin in the rainbow bridge to Woodstock and beyond. Benny had arranged for us to stay in Brooklyn, at the studio of Traci Mann, a New York tap dancer.
Disoriented by jet lag, Hans had left his laptop on the airport bus. That first night, with the El roaring past our window, we fell into a troubled sleep, woken by the clatter of the El and the cries of children at the daycare centre below.
Through a Glass
Our first pilgrimage in New York was to the Yippie Museum in Greenwich Village. The Village was the bohemian hangout par excellence in the sixties. It still has a funky, if gentrified, look. Jazz bars and restaurants dot the streets.
The Yippie Museum resembles the Nimbin Museum, with a stage for performances. One night, we caught some fine performance poetry. It’s the headquarters of New York’s hemp legalization campaign. They knew about Nimbin. They were also involved with a global linkup of cities for 2010.
1st Oct saw the launch of Mark Roselle’s book “Tree Spiker”. Mark Roselle is the founder of Rainforest Action Network. He’s also the man who infiltrated a Nevada test site. The day was also Benny’s birthday, Benny, an agent provocateur with his rainbow flags. The Yippie Museum was a happening place, true to its name of promoting green(sic) issues through direct action.
It took us a while to work out what ‘uptown’ and ‘downtown’ meant in the subway, but we had worked it out by the time we left New York!
Hans slipped out one night for a dose of jazz; the girls went on a harbour cruise; Benny was beavering away at the Ecofest office. My jet lag meant that I saw the city as if through a glass darkly. One image remains: a black, immaculately dressed saxplayer, doing “In a Sentimantl Mood” in the subway at 50th St.
Ecofest
Ecofest, Central Park, NYC, Oct 2009. Pic: Harsha Prabhu
The Ecofest office, off Broadway, was a hive of activity, presided over by Nanci Callahan, queen bee and director/producer of New York’s signature ecological fair, now in it’s 21st year.
We walked to Central Park to check out the site for this year’s Ecofest, passing Strawberry Fields and ‘Imagine’, the mosaic tribute to John Lennon. On park benches huddled New York’s homeless, shrouded in grey, under the shadows of the tall towers ringing the park. The Dakota apartments where Lennon had been shot were across the street. “Yoko Ono pays for the maintenance of this section of the park and the homeless are permitted to sleep here,” Benny explained. I thought of our homeless in Byron, chased from bus shelters, their beach humpies a mark for rangers. In this instance, New York seemed to have a heart.
Sunday 4th Oct was a fine day. The Ecofest site began to fill up with vedors and exhibitors, including the latest hybrid cars from Toyota and Ford.
Rainbow Dreaming at Ecofest, Central Park, NYC, Oct 2009. Pic: Harsha Prabhu
We had been assigned the outer wall of the conference tent to set up the Rainbow Dreaming exhibit. Space restrictions meant only half the exhibit could be accommodated. We punched holes into the exhibition panels and strung them out on twine like washing on a line. It worked! Sayaka Nakao, Rina Terasaki and Saya Minami, our Japanese friends from Byron Bay, who had flown in the previous day via Tokyo to help with the exhibition tour, assisted us in this improvisatory task. Ever enthusiastic, our petite helpers were worth their weight in gold. Hans and I would have struggled to manage the show on our own.
Over 25,000 visitors streamed through Ecofest that day and, as we were positioned at the entrance, many of these stopped by to check the exhibit. Among these was Nirmala, Gina Lakosta’s daughter, who was in New York to perform a burlesque show, under the stage name La Viola Vixen. Another was a couple from Goonengerry, amazed to stumble upon a slice of life from the rainbow region in the heart of New York.
Tap dancers, including the amazing Mabel Lee, Traci Manns’s former teacher, all of 80; soul singers; stiletto heeled models strutting eco fashions; Rick Ulfik from We the World, the global peace network; Parrots for Peace from the Amazon rainforest; ending with a sing along with the legendary Pete Seeger, 90 years old and still singing his peace and environmental anthems.
Jam session, Central Park, NYC, Oct 2009. Pic: Harsha Prabhu
The sun shone down on Benny Zable’s rainbow flags; children fed ducks in the pond; whole families happily picnicked under the trees; frisbees flew in the air. Catching the last of the sunset, the tall towers seemed to shower us with riches and green fields became fields of gold.
The evening ended with drumming. Three drum circles – Cuban, Haitian and African – rang out in the Park. The moon was full and so were our hearts.
Postscript: Hans’ laptop, lost on our first night, was returned to him by the New York City Transport Authority on our last morning in New York, in a fairy tale ending to our stay in the Big Apple!
Van Gets Ripped, or The Long Sleep of Unreason
Blog 2 on the Rainbow Dreaming US tour, taking in New York’s 13th Harvest Festival & Freedom Rally, Hancock, NY; and Woodstock Museum, Saugerties, NY.

New York Harvest Fest & Freedom Rally
Marijuana legalisation activists and their supporters on the East coast were to meet at Camp Minglewood in the Catskills, a couple of hours north of New York, for the Harvest Festival & Freedom Rally, on 9 Oct.
Rainbow Dreaming crew at New York Harvest Fest & Freedom Rally, October 2009
It was an opportunity too good to be missed. Our hosts from the Woodstock Museum, Shelli Lipton and Nathan Koenig, had booked us a spot at the Festival. They had also booked us into a bunkhouse, with 10 bunk beds. By now we had mushroomed to a party of 10.
It wasn’t pot, but potties that preoccupied us the three days we were there. The toilets were blocked. Much time and energy was spent agonizing over the situation and negotiating the portaloos well before the happy horde that had descended on the Camp trashed them every morning.
Harvest Fest, the child of Hemp activist and performance poet Rob Robinson, was now in its thirteenth year. The legal situation with pot in the US is complex and confusing. Some states (California) allow the medical use of marijuana. Others will bust you for possessing rolling papers. The talk at the Camp was all about the bust of a long-time hemp activist, who had been caught with a whole lot of pot that he was bringing to the festival. Regardless, the pot was plentiful.
Camp Minglewood, Hancock, October 2009. Pic: Harsha Prabhu
From pot to politics. I met Kurt Shotko, a member of the Greens party. Kurt was of the opinion that the Republicans and Democrats were cut from the same cloth, manufactured by big business. “Look at what Obama’s doing in Afghanistan. He’s sending more Americans to die there. We need an alternative to the main players. We’ve got to wake up to the reality that the American dream has been a nightmare for a lot of Americans and for the rest of the world, especially in Iraq and Afghanistan. We have been asleep for too long. We need a revival of common sense. Only a massive program of self education is going to do it.”
Then he quoted from the Populist Program, published in 1892: “They propose to sacrifice our homes, lives and children on the altar of mammon; to destroy the multitude in order to secure corruption funds for the millionaires.”
1892! The sleep of unreason had been a long one.
But Kurt was hopeful of the next generation. That’s why he set up camp at festivals across the US. And that’s partly why we were there too.

The Rainbow Dreaming exhibit was attached to a wall in the main music hall. Thus many, mostly young, punters got to see the exhibit. This was where The Wailers played on Saturday. I caught the Wailers when they played in Byron and I’m happy to report that they are still wailing away.
But what struck me most about the music at Harvest Fest was the pervasive influence of the Grateful Dead, the legendary sixties psychedelic band from San Francisco. From Cabinet, an established US indi band that played the main stage, to camp fire songs at 4 am, the Dead were everywhere, on so many t shirts and stickers, in so many riffs and improvisatory moments, as a psychedelic glint in so many eyes.
George Clinton & Funkedelic, NY Harvest Fest & Freedom Rally, Camp Minglewood, Hancock, October 2009. Pic: Harsha Prabhu
I spoke with Jane, an artist from New York, who had a stall selling Dead memorabilia. She had grown up in San Francisco and was still a Deadhead. Her eyes misted when she spoke of Jerry Garcia: “You could see so much love pouring out of him. It was a love affair that lasted and lasted and it’s still going strong even when he’s gone.”
Minglewood Moment: across from the festival site, two lovers sit on the steps of a boat ramp. The dying sun paints purple tints on the tops of the maple and elm; waterfowl break the surface of the lake. A band is playing the Dead’s “China Cat Sunflower.”
Woodstock: The Town that Time Forgot
In Rip Van Winkle, Washington Irving’s story, a man who wanders off into the Catskill Mountains, meets some rather strange companions who serve up a suspiciously heady brew, and falls asleep under a tree. When he wakes up, he finds that some 20 years have gone by and his world has changed.
Woodstoock, October 2009. Pic: Harsha Prabhu
The town of Catskill is 30 minutes away from Woodstock. Some 40 years have gone by after the infamous Woodstock festival of 1969. And the world has changed since those heady days. But walking around Woodstock, the town that gave a name to the festival, (which happened in the neighbouring town of Bethel, some 100 kms away), you could be forgiven for believing that it’s still in the thrall of those halcyon days of hippiedom.

Our first port of call was the Woodstock Town Board meeting that night. Benny Zable, Nimbin’s ambassador to Woodstock, presented letters from Nimbin and the crew made a presentation on the Rainbow Dreaming exhibit and its relevance to the whole Woodstock legacy.
The meet was dominated by a spirited discussion over rezoning issues, something very familiar to us on the north coast. Would Woodstock go the way of other small towns and be besieged by rampant development, or would it stay true to its alternative legacy?
That night we also visited the Bearsville Cultural Centre (set up by Albert Grossman, one-time manager of Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin and The Band) and Alchemia Café to catch some live music, including a spirited set by Adam, a young musician we had met at the Byron market drum circle!
Guided around by Benny, on our very first day in Woodstock, we met some representatives of Woodstock’s hippie past: Jogger John, the local village savant, who used to jog everywhere, but, due to his advanced age is now is on a bike; Day A, the village barber, who runs a soup kitchen for the Rainbow Family in town; Grandpa and Grandma Woodstock, an elderly couple, dressed the part, almost town mascots. Woodstock itself is full of funky cafes and art galleries. Turn a corner and spy a Zen garden, complete with waterfall and pergola.
Peace Pole, Woodstock, October 2009. Pic: Emi Iizuka
In the centre of Woodstock town is the village green and the peace pole, with peace messages in several languages. We bumped into Fr John, a priest and peace activist. When he heard that two of our crew, Sayaka Nakao and Rina Terasaki, were from Tokyo, he beamed at them and said: “ Let’s set up a peace link between Woodstock and Tokyo. All it takes is five people. Five is the magic number. Can you find five friends in Tokyo who may be interested?”
Hippie Church, Woodstock, October 2009. Pic: Harsha Prabhu
Fr John also runs the Hippie Church, on the hill overlooking Woodstock. This was the very church where Bob Dylan was rumoured to have married the love of his life, Sarah, his sad eyed lady of the lowlands. The church wears the patina of age, its icons fading in the dim, dank light streaming through stained glass windows.
Path to Buddhist monastery, Woodstock, October 2009. Pic: Harsha Prabhu
In stark contrast is the Buddhist monastery next door. Set up in 1975, the monastery is linked to the 10th century Tibetan Kagyu lineage. Its halls are huge and lushly decorated with tankas, its massive Buddha is gold-painted, its prayer lamps cast a beatific glow on meditating monks and visitors; its gift shop bulges with merchandise, all a tribute to Buddhism’s growing influence in the new world.
Prophesy
The next morning, my very first snowflakes, fine and feathery.
It was too cold to venture out. Emi Iizuka and Simeon Michaels, both from Byron, had joined us in Woodstock. We were toasty warm at the Woodstock Museum, hosted by Shelli and Nathan.
Under the tutelage of Shelli, the sacred Indian corn was brought out and inspected. Purple, yellow, orange, red and black, this was authentic Hopi corn. The girls played with the corn silk, good for medicinal tea and dress ups, fake moustaches and beards. They were transformed into imaginary characters, magical beings, the warrior princesses of Genghis Khan, dressed as men to pass unnoticed amidst the ripening corn. Shelli makes beautiful corn necklaces, a craft she learnt from Rainbow Weaver, a Mohawk Clan Mother.
Padmasambhava, Buddhist monastery, Woodstock, October 2009. Pic: Emi Iizuka
Nathan spoke about the connection between the Hopi and the Tibetans. “Padmasambhava, the founder of Tibetan Buddhism, said: When the iron bird flies and the horses run on wheels the Tibetans will be scattered over the face of the earth and the dharma will come to the land of the red man.”
Nathan went on: “The Hopi’s felt that this might have something to do with the dharma coming to the US. They have prophesies too. After the swastika and the sun, there would be another force, symbolized by the colour red. This force will wear a red cloak or red cap. Spiritual wisdom will come from the East. This spirituality must spread. If that does not take root, others with the red symbol will invade from the West and crawl over the land in one day. The Hopis think this could be the ‘red’ Chinese.”
“When the Tibetan Karmapa visited Hopiland in 1974, he said: We must have know each other before; your features, ceremonies and way of life are similar to our own. When we bought Hopis to the monastery in Woodstock in 1979, the two cultures again recognized each other, and the Hopis said that the Tibetans may very well be the long lost brother who left them at the beginning of time and went to the other side of the earth to balance the earth spiritually.” Said Shelli: “When the shit hits the fan, we won’t survive unless we cooperate with each other. That’s also what the Hopi prophecies speak of. The Hopis are known as the ‘peaceful ones’.”
While we spoke of prophecies, outside, in the gathering gloom, Tiago Guimaraes, a Brazilian artist, was busy carving out a statue of a man with a guitar, the quintessential hippie hitchhiker, his hand raised, his fingers flashing the peace sign.
Elliot Landy’s book on Woodstock
The Rainbow Dreaming opening at the Woodstock Museum on Sat 17 Oct was a modest yet sweet affair: local musos were in attendance and we joined the members of the Woodstock drum circle in a bongothon.
Rainbow Dreaming crew with Elliot Landy, Woodstock Museum, October 2009. Pic: Hans Lovejoy
The highlight of the evening was meeting Elliot Landy, the famous Woodstock photographer. Elliot was all praise for the exhibit, gave away signed copies of his book to all the crew and offered to help us find a publisher for a book on the exhibition. (Sadly, I was to leave my copy on the street in San Francisco while moving house.)
The Last Hippie, Woodstock Museum, October 2009. Pic: Harsha Prabhu
The last act of the day was raising the sculpture of the hippie hitchhiker and placing him on his pedestal: a symbol of Woodstock’s hippie past and a pointer to its uncertain future as a cultural pilgrimage centre.
Woodstock Earth, after the drum circle, October, 2009. Pic: Simeon Michaels
On our last evening in Woodstock, we participated in the Woodstock Earth drum circle. Some 30 drummers were gathered in the backyard at Day A’s house. In summer, the drummers gather at the village green and spill out onto the road. As the sound of the drums rose over the autumn dusk, we were again reminded of how lucky we were with our vibrant culture of communal drumming and dancing in the rainbow region.
Last days in New York: the Bangladeshi cigarette sellers; the African rickshaw pullers in Central Park; the old men and women carting large bundles of recyclable cans and bottles; the man in Times Square offering to sell me a 15 carat gold ring or Obama condoms.
While the crew went shopping and sightseeing I wandered back to Central Park. More than the statue of Liberty, than Ground Zero, than the suicide gulches and canyons of Wall Street, I was drawn to the spot with the Imagine mosaic and tribute to John Lennon. Park benches line the walkway, each with its dedication. I sat there, amidst the touros and derros, as the shadows lengthened.
Then I saw these lines from Dylan Thomas, carved on a park bench: “Though lovers be lost love shall not; And death shall have no dominion.”

How Might Enrolling In Truck Driving Schools Benefit Me?

Odds are you will be pressed into stuffed gatherings and have so brief period behind the controlling wheel which is the thing that you will require most. The World's Most Famous Valleys
10. Valley of the Ten Peaks (Canada)
The Valley of the Ten Peaks is located in Banff National Park in the western province of Alberta. It is aptly named for the ten snow-capped mountains so magnificently reflected in the blue, mirrorlike surface of Moraine Lake. Measuring approximately 3,424 meters high, Deltaform Mountain is the tallest of the ten behemoths. What part of the valley floor is not filled with water is covered in dense forest that many critters call home. The Valley of the Ten Peaks is such an iconic representation of Canadian wilderness that it used to feature on the back of their twenty dollar bill.
9. Yosemite Valley (United States)
Stretching approximately 7.5 miles, Yosemite Valley is located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range of Central California. Formed by glaciers over thirty million years ago, it is most famous for its sheer granite cliffs. Rock climbers come from all over to challenge these monolithic beasts, particularly El Capitan which rises nearly a thousand meters above the ground. Blanketed in shadow, these rock formations turn blue at night. Less dangerous hiking trails offer casual tourists gorgeous panoramic views of lush forests and green meadows. The valley is also home to countless waterfalls, including Yosemite Falls, the highest waterfall in North America.
8. Kalalau Valley (United States)
Kalalau Valley is located on the Hawaiian island of Kaua‘i. Surrounded by cliffs measuring more than 610 meters high, this natural hideaway is often referred to as Kaua‘i's Cathedral and is only accessible by foot, kayak, or helicopter. The sun and frequent rain have transformed this valley into a thriving paradise where flora grows along the steep cliffs and fauna live within the forests and surrounding hills. At the end of the trail cutting through the greenery, mangoes, passion fruit, and cherries grow next to a waterfall. Because of its designation as a state park, nobody is permitted to live in Kalalau Valley.
7. Valle de la Luna (Chile)
Valle de la Luna—or Valley of the Moon—is a part of the Atacama Desert in the South American country of Chile. The bleak landscape is composed of various rock formations carved by strong wind and sand. Numerous dry lakes and caverns dot the region. It is considered to be one of the driest places in the world, with some parts last receiving rain hundreds of years ago. Because of this, there is little wildlife to be found there. As its name implies, it is famous for resembling a barren moonscape. In fact, a prototype of the Mars rover was tested in the valley due to its unique lunar-like terrain.
6. Lauterbrunnen Valley (Switzerland)
Located deep in the Swiss Alps, Lauterbrunnen Valley is one of the biggest nature conservation areas in Switzerland. Known for its 72 waterfalls, its very name means “many fountains.” The most famous is Staubbach Falls, which at 300 meters, is one of the highest free-falling waterfalls in Europe. Tourists can walk through wildflower meadows and clusters of trees in full view of snow-capped mountains, breathing in the fresh valley air. It is also a popular skiing region in the winter. The surrounding area is so picturesque that Lord of the Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien modeled the Elven kingdom of Rivendell after Lauterbrunnen Valley.
5. Valley of Flowers (India)
The Valley of Flowers is a high-altitude Himalayan valley located in the state of Uttarakhand. Rising over 3,000 meters above sea level and stretching across 87.50 square kilometers of land, it is known as one of the most beautiful and peaceful places in India. Revered by both mountain climbers and botanists alike, the valley is blanketed with alpine wildflowers. From mid-July to September, hikers can wander among the bursts of purples, pinks, and blues. The region is also alive with incredible wildlife, from Asiatic bears to the Himalayan blue sheep. In 2002, the Valley of Flowers was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
4. Barun Valley (Nepal)
Barun Valley is located in the Himalayas in the Asian country of Nepal. It is situated at the base of Mount Makalu, the fifth-highest mountain in the world, and contains some of the world’s last untouched ecosystems. Among the forests, waterfalls, and wild orchids roam rare animals such as musk deer and the endangered snow leopard. It is such a mystical-looking paradise that it is known in Buddhist folklore as a place where no one ages. According to ancient religious literature, Barun Valley will be one of seven places left in the world where life can thrive in the wake of a global cataclysmic event.
3. Jiuzhaigou Valley (China)
The Jiuzhaigou Valley is a nature reserve and national park in the Sichuan Province of China. Spanning 720 square kilometers, it is a breathtaking region known for its many lakes and springs. A local legend tells the story of how the Goddess Semo dropped a mirror made of wind and clouds that shattered to create the countless lakes that dot the valley. The most impressive is Five Flower Lake, an ethereal paradise where ancient tree trunks swim among the cyan water. The region is also home to many endangered animals, including the giant panda and the Sichuan takin. Tourists can accompany guides on daily hikes or set up camp for a few days.
2. Danum Valley (Borneo)
The Danum Valley is a conservation area in Borneo, the largest island in Asia. Relatively undisturbed by human interference, this 438-square kilometer tract of land is mainly tropical rainforest, which grants it a misty, almost eerie quality. It is home to some of the world’s most astonishing creatures, such as pygmy elephants, East Sumatran rhinos, gibbons, and mousedeer. The valley offers tourists the opportunity to trek through the jungle or swim in its many rivers. With over 300 species of birds, it is also a fabulous spot for bird watching. Efforts have been made to nominate the valley as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
1. Valley of Geysers (Russia)
The Valley of Geysers is located in the Russian Far East, approximately 25 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The basin itself stretches 3.7 miles and is considered one of the most important geographic discoveries of the twentieth century. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it is famous for containing the second-largest concentration of geysers in the world. These ninety or so geysers can be as hot as 480 degrees Fahrenheit. They are surrounded by lush green vegetation, but tourists are only permitted to visit the main geysers along the pre-marked safe paths. The valley is only accessible by helicopter.

An ancient network of roads that stretched over 150 miles has been discovered in the jungle of Guatemala, according to high-tech scanning carried out in the area. Used by the Maya for travel and transporting goods, the causeways were identified in the Mirador Basin, which lies in the far northern Petén region of Guatemala, within the largest tract of virgin tropical forest remaining in Central America. Also known as the Kan Kingdom, El Mirador is considered the cradle of Mayan civilization. Prior to its abandonment in 150 A.D., it was the largest city-state in the world both in size — 833 square miles — and population. It boasted the largest known pyramid in Central America, and was home to at least one million people. Researchers have known about the presence of these roads since 1967, when British Mayanist Ian Graham published a map of Mirador showing causeways crossing the swamp regions. Now laser-based remote sensing has been used to map the area, providing new insights into the massive system of superhighways. The Light Detection and Ranging tool, known as LiDAR, is capable of penetrating the thick jungle vegetation at a rate of 560,000 dots per second, producing detailed images that mimic a 3-D view of the scanned areas. "LiDAR uses laser pulses that bounce from the Earth's surface through leaves and back to a computer mounted in a plane," said Arlen Chase, an archaeologist at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, who is working on the project. "While most people felt the technology would not be successful based on past experiments in Central America, we became convinced by 2006 that it could be used to determine what was on the ground in terms of Maya sites under the jungle canopy." Researchers with the Mirador Basin Project, which is led by archaeologist and anthropologist Richard D. Hansen of the University of Utah, have so far scanned and analyzed more than 430 square miles of the basin. "The results were beyond our wildest expectations," Chase said. LiDAR-derived images accurately portrayed structures, agricultural terraces, pyramids, canals, corrals and a network of 17 roads. Hansen, who has been excavating causeways since 1990, has found detailed evidence of the roads' construction, destinations and locations. "With the LiDAR technology, we have been able to investigate the incredible size and complexity of these causeways," he said, revealing that the Maya rivaled the ancient Romans in road construction skills.
LiDAR was capable of penetrating thick jungle vegetation at the northern Guatemalan regions where the roads were detected.
"These causeways are 130 feet wide, up to 20 feet high and in some cases they extend as far as 25 miles," Hansen said. The first building of the causeway between Mirador and Tindall and Mirador and Nakbe dates to 600 and 400 B.C., while other causeways date from 300 BC to 100 A.D. "The creation of these causeways allowed unification of what appears to be the first state-level society in the Western Hemisphere," Hansen added. According to Hansen and colleagues, the sophisticated system of corrals, or animal pens, that was identified through the LIDAR scans may have been established first by the inhabitants of Mirador. This would suggest that meat production in the Mirador Basin existed at an industrial level, with transportation relying on the superhighways. "The causeways allowed transport of food, materials, tribute, rulers, armies and all the trappings of political, economic and social complexity," Hansen explained. "The system is similar to the autobahn system in Germany, or the freeway system in the U.S., and allows unification, homogeneity of society and permits the administration of centralized government."
LiDAR image showing features and causeways within the Guatemalan forest.
The discovery of the ancient network of roads will provide the Cuenca Mirador researchers with more Maya sites to investigate. Hansen and his colleagues believe the new findings may help to understand why the Mirador Basin civilization declined after 150 A.D. The collapse is being investigated by a variety of researchers from 34 universities and institutions from around the world. The Mirador Basin is currently being considered for protection by the Congress of the Republic of Guatemala as a wilderness area. The site lies in the heart of the Maya Biosphere Reserve, which is considered one of the environmental and cultural lungs of the Americas.

You must see these 29 surreal landscapes from across our gorgeous planet
Earth is full of bizarre landscapes. Some are land formations moulded over thousands of years, while others are human-made creations that have altered the planet in strange ways.
From the bubbling lava lakes of Ethiopia, to a lake that has been nestled in the desert for 2,000 years, here are 29 landscapes that are so incredible, it’s hard to believe they’re real.
Near the city of Torrevieja in Spain lie two salty and very pink lakes called Las Salinas de Torrevieja. The colour is said to be caused by algae that releases a red pigment under certain conditions.

The Door to Hell in Turkmenistan has been burning its flames since 1971. Somehow, the hole continues to burn since it was accidentally drilled into by geologists.

In the province of Denizli in western Turkey, the naturally terraced thermal springs of Hierapolis-Pamukkale date as far back as the second century BC. Formed by calcite in the water, the hot springs look like stunning white clouds.

The Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland in New Zealand has been sculpted from thousands of years of volcanic activity. Considered New Zealand’s most colourful and diverse geothermal attraction, the site features bubbling mud pools, mineral terraces, and geysers.

Tanzania’s Lake Natron is known for its deep red hue. Its rich colour comes from algae and salt-loving organisms, and it fascinatingly draws millions of flamingo visitors from June to November.

In Geneva, travellers can witness the majestic sight of two rivers colliding with one another. The source of the Rhône river is the Rhône Glacier, while the Arve River is fed by glaciers in the Chamonix valley. When the two bleed into one another, it makes for a stunning sight.

The Danakil Depression, in the northeastern corner of Ethiopia, is one of the hottest places on the planet, with temperatures reaching as high as 145 degrees Fahrenheit (62 degrees Celsius). With two active volcanoes, a bubbling lava lake, geysers, acid ponds, and several mineral deposits, the setting looks like something from another planet.

The rice terraces of China’s Yunnan province are carved into the hillside. Different types of vegetation lend the landscape its alternating hues.

Antelope Canyon, located near Page, Arizona, is the most photographed canyon in the American Southwest. Travellers flock here to capture its masterpiece of colours while admiring its smooth, wave-like texture.

Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia are volcanic landscapes created entirely from erosion. This includes pinnacles nicknamed ‘fairy chimneys’, which can be seen across this region of Turkey. Meanwhile, the Cappadocia Valley is home to thousand-year-old cave dwellings you can still visit today.

The Crescent Lake (or “Yueyaquan” in Chinese) is a fresh water spring in the shape of a half moon that sits in the Gobi Desert. The oasis is believed to have existed for around 2,000 years (though it has seen its water levels decline), and attractions include activities like dune surfing and camel riding.

At first glance, the Lencois Maranhenses Sand Dunes of northeastern Brazil look like your average set of sand dunes, but the valleys are filled with water since the low-lying lands often flood during the wet season. Fish even live in the pools.

Marvel at Grand Prismatic Spring, located in Wyoming’s Yellowstone National Park. As the largest natural hot spring in the US, it’s a favourite for its dazzling colours that shift from orange and reds in the summer to green hues in the winter.

Whitehaven Beach, in Whitsunday Island, Australia, hosts a cove where the tide shifts the sand and waters together, creating a breathtaking combination. White sands and turquoise waters seem to blend seamlessly to make for a marvelous view.

During the wet season, the Salar de Uyuni salt flats in Bolivia are covered in a thin layer of water, creating surreal reflections of the sky.

Visit the Zao Onsen hot spring and ski resort, located in the mountains of Japan’s Yamagata Prefecture, and you’ll see ‘ice trees’ – trees that pack on heavy amounts of snow to take on fascinating shapes.

Salinas Grandes is a massive salt desert in Argentina. The field stretches 2,300 square miles (3,700 square kilometres) and includes saltwater pools within its awe-inspiring expanse.

The Ta Prohm temple, located in Angkor, Cambodia, is an unbelievably fascinating sight, as huge tree roots dominate the ground and structure, growing sideways along its walls.
(Perfect Lazybones/Shutterstock) The Namib Sand Sea, located in Namibia’s Namid-Naukluft Park, is a coastal desert. Dune fields often come into contact with fog, creating a unique environment for an array of wildlife.

The Kelimutu volcano on Flores island, Indonesia, is home to three coloured lakes ranging from turquoise to a rich green. The lakes are incredibly dense, adding to the striking appearance of their colours, which are thought to be caused by dissolving minerals.

The Wave is a sandstone rock formation located in the Paria Canyon-Vermillon Cliffs Wilderness near the border of Arizona and Utah. It’s known for its colourful and unique formations and the difficult hike required to reach it, and you’ll need to obtain a permit to visit.
(Greg Mote/Flickr)Colombia’s Caño Cristales is covered in an aquatic plant that takes on hues of red, blue, yellow, orange, and green under different weather conditions. Most of the year it looks like any other river, but from June to December, it is said to look like a breathtaking stream of rainbows.

Located in Utah, Bryce Canyon National Park is home to brightly coloured geological structures, which are formed from erosion and called hoodoos. The park hosts the largest collection of hoodoos in the world.

The White Sands National Monument in New Mexico is home to the world’s largest gypsum dune field. With around 275 square miles (442 square kilometres) of white dunes, the area looks like it’s blanketed in snow.

The Richat Structure, also known as the Eye of the Sahara, stands as a large bullseye in the middle of the Sahara Desert. With a diameter that spans almost 30 miles (48 km), it is thought to be the result of erosion and stands as a marvel for scientists and travellers alike.

Croatia’s Plitvice Lakes National Park is both one of southeast Europe’s oldest parks and Croatia’s largest, with 16 interlinked lakes between Mala Kapela Mountain and Plješivica Mountain. The lakes are surrounded by lush forests and waterfalls, whose waters have deposited travertine limestone barriers for years to create the natural dams.

Nevada’s Fly Geyser, located in Washoe County, was created through accidental well drilling in 1916. In the 1960s, the water began escaping from the drilled location, creating the geyser that is known for its stunning changing colours.

Ice caves that reside within Kamchatka, Russia, come complete with stunning formations and hues of purples, blues, greens, and yellows, which arise when sunlight streams through their glacial ice.

Covington Hosts First Webinar on Connected and Automated Vehicles
On February 27, 2019, Covington hosted its first webinar in a series on connected and automated vehicles (“CAVs”). During the webinar, which is available here, Covington’s regulatory and public policy experts covered the current state of play in U.S. law and regulations relating to CAVs. In particular, Covington’s experts focused on relevant developments in: (1) federal public policy; (2) federal regulatory agencies; (3) state public policy; (4) autonomous aviation; and (5) national security.
Highlights from each of these areas are presented below.
Federal Public Policy. Holly Fechner (Public Policy, Former Senate Policy Director) discussed Congressional efforts to pass legislation related to CAVs. Fechner first discussed two bills introduced in the 115th Congress: (1) the Safely Ensuring Lives Future Deployment and Research in Vehicle Evolution (“SELF DRIVE”) Act (H.R. 3388); and (2) the American Vision for Safer Transportation through Advancement of Revolutionary Technologies (“AV START”) Act (S. 1885). As Ms. Fechner explained, concerns over safety, federal preemption, consumer privacy, and cybersecurity standards prevented the bills from passing in the Senate. Looking ahead, Ms. Fechner noted that the lead sponsors expect to introduce new legislation and are identifying vehicles for passage in the 116th Congress. Ms. Fechner also discussed President Donald Trump’s call for “investments in the cutting-edge industries of the future” and the recent Executive Order on Artificial Intelligence as further indications of interest in this issue.
Federal Regulatory Agencies. Sarah Wilson (Product Liability/Consumer Safety, Former Federal Claims Judge, Former White House Senior Counsel) presented on federal regulatory efforts related to CAV issues. Wilson highlighted the Department of Transportation’s October 2018 Preparing for the Future of Transportation: Automated Vehicles 3.0 (“AV 3.0”), which, most notably, announced that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (“NHTSA”) will favor voluntary consensus-based technical standards over mandatory regulation. Ms. Wilson identified support for AV 3.0 (e.g., industry players who applaud AV 3.0’s flexibility and “technology-neutral” approach), as well as criticisms (e.g., consumer advocacy groups that have proposed alternatives to AV 3.0’s non-binding nature). She also noted NHTSA’s recent efforts to make its assertions of jurisdiction over related software more explicit. Finally, Ms. Wilson covered the Federal Communications Commission’s (“FCC”) role in regulating CAVs, particularly through the allocation of spectrum.
State Public Policy. Jake Levine (State Regulation/Public Policy, Former Senior Counsel to California State Senator Fran Pavley, Former White House Policy Advisor) detailed the ways in which state policymakers have been active in the CAV space. As we have previously covered, state governments have stepped into the relative void left by Congress and the federal agencies in regulating CAVs. During the webinar, Mr. Levine explained that, between 2011 and 2017, twenty-two states passed forty-six laws relating in some way to autonomous mobility, and, in 2018, twenty-eight states introduced around another hundred bills. Levine discussed the spectrum of CAV regulation across states, ranging from states that exercise relatively heavy-handed regulatory processes (e.g., California) to states that have been focused on clearing the path for innovation (e.g., Arizona, Nevada, and Florida), as well as states with regulatory barriers that are somewhere in between (e.g., Pennsylvania). Mr. Levine also noted that, while much of the existing CAV regulation at the state level focuses on permitting, an emerging trend in state and local governments appears to be purpose-driven policymaking and legislation. For instance, legislation in some states is focused on CAV “adjacent issues,” including externalities (e.g., in D.C. and Oregon), infrastructure and taxation (e.g., in California), and emissions (e.g., in California).
Autonomous Aviation. Brian Smith (Public Policy/Aviation, Former White House Counsel’s Office, Former Special Assistant, Department of Labor) highlighted regulatory issues within the autonomous aviation space. As Mr. Smith explained, regulation in the autonomous aviation space has proceeded on a different path than regulatory efforts covering CAVs on land. In some ways, the autonomous aviation space is ahead (g., the existence of critical infrastructure and platforms, as well strong federal preemption). In other respects, the regulation of the autonomous aviation space lags behind (e.g., the relevant regulatory structure is built around a licensed operator, as opposed to autonomy). Mr. Smith discussed ways in which legislatures and regulators are trying to play “catch up,” including through passage of the Federal Aviation Administration (“FAA”) Reauthorization Act of 2018 (Public Law No: 115-254), as well as rulemakings by the FAA covering areas such as Remote ID.
National Security. Jonathan Wakely (CFIUS/International Trade, Former CIA Political Analyst) discussed national security regulatory considerations related to CAVs. First, Mr. Wakely identified the ways in which the CAV sector implicates national security concerns, including related to foreign access to data, potential military applications of commercial technology, and cybersecurity risks. Wakely then explained two of the authorities under which the U.S. government may seek to address the national security risks related to the CAV sector: the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (“CFIUS”) and export controls. With respect to CFIUS, Mr. Wakely noted that certain transactions involving companies developing CAVs may be subject to mandatory filings with CFIUS under new rules for foreign investments in “critical technology” companies that were announced late last year.

Is GEICO auto insurance tougher (more expensive) than Progressive if you have an at fault accident?
I have one at fault accident on my record. It was a rear-end collision and it is a 2 pt. accident in California. I was shopping for new insurance. I made this statement about the at fault accident when filling out the forms for a quote online. At first GEICO the GEICO rates were looking way better than Progressive or other insurance companies so I thought I'd go with them. But when I went to go pay online, they did one last DMV record check, and came back with a higher rate. Even though I had stated the accident in the form previously. They waited to verify this at the very end and not earlier which I found annoying--they had my driver's licence earlier in the application process, so why wait till the very end! When filling out the Progressive quote forms, I also stated the info about my accident where asked. At the end, the form still considered me a Good Driver and the quote was much cheaper than Progressive. I went to pay and it did not recalculate my quote after a DMV check like GEICO did. I paid and am wondering if I am going to hear back from them saying I need to pay more. But I gave them all the info and I do now have a policy. So it appears that GEICO is tougher when it comes to having an accident, and Progressive doesn't let one at fault accident ruin a good driver discount? Does anyone have experience with this?""

I am starting my own small business and need health insurance for my family. I won't go with Kaiser, please don't ask why. It will be a family-owned sole prop business. I live and work in California, but if there is value in incorporating in another state for the purpose of taxes or prices on health insurance, I guess I could do it...because I have not formally formed the corporation yet. I used to be under the impression that the best prices for Heath Insurance came when you worked for a big company, but things seem to have changed. Does affordable car insurance exist for a 19 year old?
I'm a 19 year college student. Currently I'm a closing manager at McDonald's and a certified Cisco Network Associate. I'm in the process of buying a vehicle and was optimistic about it until I started to look for insurance. The cheapest policy I've found is $338 a month. There isn't any way I can afford that and the car payment. It's not that I'm lazy and don't work, I work 40 hour weeks plus overtime from closing. I live in a rural area (North Georgia Mountains) so taking the bus isn't a option for a 20 mile commute. My closest neighbor is 7 miles away so car pooling isn't realistic. I feel somewhat hopeless. I would join my parent's policy or something similar but I live on my own and have little to no contact with them. I've been borrowing my Mother's car to get to work but she's given me 3 weeks to get a vehicle or walk. I have found it to be almost impossible to transition into the real world and become an adult and live on my own. What's a guy to do in my situation? I can't work without transportation, and without work I can't pay bills. That American Dream I grew up hearing about seems to only exist for people who have established wealth and good parents. What's left for the others? Are people in my situation just ******?""

How to get low mileage discount from Progressive auto insurance?
I know that many companies will give a huge discount on your automotive insurance premiums if you supply them with proof that you drive far fewer miles than average. However, Progressive does not mention anything, anywhere about low mileage discounts. I have been told you have to ask for this, or else you would never know it is possible. Robo Rules: The State of Autonomous Vehicle Regulations
When automobiles first appeared on public roads in the early 20th century, there were few regulations—and lots of crashes. The powers that be had to determine how to safely integrate motor vehicles with horses, trolleys, and pedestrians sharing crowded city streets.
In the book The Law of Automobiles, published in 1906, author and attorney Xenophon P. Huddy helped policymakers by defining new concepts such as speeding and proper signaling. A section titled “Law Keeps Up with Improvement and Progress” described cars as “a new contrivance for transportation purposes,” and it sounds prescient when viewed against today’s quandary of how to regulate self-driving car technology and assimilate robo-taxis into existing traffic.
Prepare for a new future: The early days of the automobile saw horse and motor carriages cohabit despite sparse regulation. With the rise of self-driving tech, it seems a similar situation is upon us, and once more we’re tasked with revamping the rules, lest chaos take control.
Jump forward a century to when Google in 2010 revealed it had covered more than 100,000 miles testing its early autonomous vehicles (AVs) in California, and there were no regulations against self-driving cars on public roads. As with the advent of cars decades ago, self-driving vehicles are rolling onto roadways as developers test the technology in the real world. In the process, they’re forcing a rewrite of existing road rules meant to apply to humans behind the wheel, not machines and computer code.

The federal government generally sets regulations such as mandating safety equipment and testing crash-worthiness of new vehicles while states manage after-sale rules regarding registration, licensing, and safety inspection.
“The real issue with autonomous driving is you’re combining the driver and the car,” says Jim McPherson, a San Francisco-based attorney who has extensively studied self-driving regulations and is the founder and principal of SafeSelfDrive.org.
Ford is testing self-driving technology in Florida. A full fleet of Chevrolet Bolts is in production with an aim toward autonomy. GM plans to use the Bolt as its first car without a steering wheel or pedals.
While the feds have lagged in setting AV regulations, several states have accelerated testing and deployment of the technology on public roads, though any federal law will ultimately supersede state statutes. Nevada was the first state to legalize the operation of autonomous vehicles in 2011, and Florida followed later the same year. Today, 22 states and Washington D.C. have passed legislation, and governors in 10 states have issued executive orders regulating AVs.
Google’s home state of California, a hub of AV technology, was one of the earliest to enact regulations. The tech giant regarded the state’s original law passed in 2012 as too restrictive because it called for, among other things, a human driver to always be behind the wheel and, later, vehicles to have a steering wheel and pedals. “California has a very restrictive approach to the deployment of AVs and the information they require,” says Grayson Brulte, co-founder and president of the consulting firm Brulte & Company and co-chair of the Beverly Hills, California-based Mayor’s Autonomous Vehicle Task Force.
California, Arizona, and Florida are the big 3 in autonomous vehicle testing
California was one of the first states to enact regulations
California requires an autonomous vehicle permit; Florida and Arizona do not
Nevada was first to legalize the operation of autonomous vehicles in 2011; Florida followed in the same year
10 states have issued executive orders to regulate autonomous vehicles
In 2016 Florida expanded regulations to allow autonomous vehicles to operate without a driver
Virginia wants to be the capital of autonomous vehicles
Michigan followed Florida in 2016, allowing autonomous vehicles to operate without a driver
“California requires an AV permit, whereas states like Florida and Arizona do not,” Brulte adds. Google and others also took issue with California’s requirement that AV companies report all “disengagements” while testing, incidents in which a human had to take over, while Arizona and Florida don’t. This spring, new regulations went into effect in California that, among other things, allow an AV to operate without a person inside if remote operation is provided as a backup.
“They had no choice,” Brulte says of California relaxing its AV regulations. “Companies were moving large deployments of AVs out of the state. If you compare the disengagement reports from 2015 to 2017, you see a massive drop in number of miles driven in the state.”
States Seize Opportunity
California, Arizona, and Florida—what Brulte calls the “big three” of AV testing—and several other states are vying to become a destination for self-driving development programs and to benefit from the local economic boost they bring. In 2015 Arizona Governor Doug Ducey signed an executive order directing various agencies to “undertake any necessary steps to support the testing and operation of self-driving vehicles on public roads” in the state, while Florida expanded its regulation in 2016 to allow the operation of AVs without a person in the vehicle.
With its auto industry prowess and pride, Michigan has become a champion of self-driving technology, building two dedicated test facilities and passing a law in 2016 that allows AVs to operate without anyone inside. In Virginia, another state with liberal AV laws, former Governor Terry McAuliffe devoted the remainder of his term to turning the state into “the capital of automated vehicles.”
“Everyone is jumping on the bandwagon,” Brulte says. “By allowing the testing and deploying of AVs, they’re putting the groundwork in place so that when AV services are up and running, they’ll be two or three steps ahead.”
In addition to economic incentives, Florida State Senator Jeff Brandes of St. Petersburg sees testing and deploying the technology as a tool to prevent further traffic gridlock.
We have 20 million residents and 116 million tourists each year and what many would consider an anemic public transportation system,” Brandes says. “We’re having traffic challenges, and here’s a technology that wasn’t available 10 years ago that lets us leapfrog light rail.”
Feds Flail Away
While states are busy fast-tracking AV regulation, the federal government is stuck in the slow lane. Granted, the feds traditionally move at a slower pace, and changes in the executive branch—and a lack of leadership at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)—haven’t helped.
After years of AV developers lobbying for federal legislation to avoid a patchwork of state laws, the Obama administration laid policy groundwork in January 2016 with a series of voluntary AV guidelines, including submitting testing and deployment plans to the Department of Transportation (DOT). After power changed hands in D.C., the Trump administration and Congress remained idle on AV policy, except for a burst of momentum last fall that has since stalled.
In September 2017, Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao unveiled an updated version of the original federal AV guidelines that removed some restrictions of the Obama-era policies. One significant change included telling AV developers they “do not need to wait to test or deploy their” technology on public roads.
Besides a few public statements by Chao, requests for comments from stakeholders, and an AV Summit in March, there’s largely been radio silence on the subject from the DOT. “They’re working on version 3.0 of the guidelines,” notes David Strickland, the former NHTSA administrator during the Obama administration who is now director of the Self-Driving Coalition for Safer Streets trade organization.
A self-driving Uber Volvo similar to the one involved in a fatal crash in March.
The Trump administration waited more than a year before naming an NHTSA administrator to head the agency tasked with instituting federal AV policy. Heidi King, who was appointed NHTSA deputy administrator in September, was nominated in April to fill the top position, although Strickland says leaving the leadership job unfilled for so long “makes things more difficult” in advancing AV policy.
Also in September, the U.S. House unanimously passed the SELF DRIVE Act, and later the same month the AV START Act was introduced in the Senate. At the time, there was hope the Senate bill would pass quickly and the bills would be reconciled and signed into law. But the AV START Act hit Capitol Hill gridlock after several senators blocked its passage, citing concerns about safety and job impact and lobbying by consumer groups and the trucking industry. With more pressing issues before Congress, Strickland doesn’t think the Senate “is at a point where the people who are opposed to the AV START Act are willing to relent.”
He added, “They probably haven’t changed their minds following the Uber [incident] in Arizona” in March that killed 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg as she walked her bike across the road and was hit by one of the ride-hailing company’s self-driving Volvos. Following the crash, Uber, Toyota, Nvidia, and others temporarily put the brakes on AV testing in Arizona and other states, and Governor Ducey pulled Uber’s testing permit in the state. The incident meant policymakers and a public already wary of self-driving technology were further spooked and are not likely to shift gears on AV technology any time soon.
Regulation Round Robin
Despite the Uber crash, several states are putting the pedal to the metal on AV testing—even if there isn’t a driver to push it or even a pedal at all. And although there’s general consensus among the self-driving car cognoscenti that federal regulation is needed to keep autonomous tech on track, some feel that letting states hash out policy could be a better path forward.
“The argument is that states need to get out of the way,” McPherson says. “The counter to that is there are states that have already rolled out regulations, and we should let that play out and see whether developers find them reasonable.” Adds Brandes: “I would prefer the states lead and the feds be a late adopter.”
Geofence: a virtual geographic boundary, defined by GPS or RFID technology, that enables software to trigger a response
But Strickland is concerned that if AV regulation is left to states, it would evolve “in a Balkanized environment and take a lot longer and be much more expensive. Federal regulation creates a level playing field and attains the benefits of AV technology in an efficient way with the highest level of safety.”
McPherson contends that states already oversee aspects of driver and vehicle safety testing and that these could be adapted to AVs. “You could have a minimum sight distance for AV sensors, just like you do for drivers,” he adds.
Strickland maintains that the federal government is better equipped to handle AV certification as well as crash investigation and data collection to ensure safety and consistency. “There’s no state that has the capacity to test a vehicle to the degree of the federal government,” he says. “States would have to build these processes from the ground up and frankly don’t have the resources to take that on. I don’t think asking states to be mini federal motor vehicle safety regulators is feasible.”
Brandes concurs with Strickland that overseeing crash investigation and data collection should be left to the federal government. “States are ill prepared to do the type of deep-dive investigation that would be required,” he says.
But he also wants states to retain rights to oversee AVs on local roads. “Early on, AVs will operate in a specific geofenced area,” he says. “You have to believe that those will be state-led, with some local discretion as well.”
In what McPherson views as an unprecedented move in motor vehicle legislation, the AV START Act would, if passed, pre-empt state laws regarding AVs. “The federal government could tell states, ‘While you only allow certain qualified drivers on your streets, now you have to allow robot cars that drive on their own or drive remotely.’ And there’s nothing states can do about it.”
You Will Be Assimilated
Like when cars first took to public roads—and some people sought to ban the newfangled contraptions for safety’s sake—politicians will eventually decide how to assimilate AVs into existing laws. “Once self-driving vehicles can travel across state lines, that will change everything,” Brulte says, and any federal laws will, of course, pre-empt most state regulations. But regardless of whether states, feds, or a combination of the two ultimately set rules for AVs, chances are you’ll see robo-cars legally riding next to you on the road soon.
Stymied by Outdated Standards
In addition to the usual Washington gridlock, autonomous vehicle technology has also been stymied by outdated Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. The FMVSS specify legal requirements such as passenger-car design and performance, regulate auto safety systems, and are crafted with human drivers in mind, not machines. Automakers have found it hard enough to get NHTSA to approve the latest (and safest) headlight technology as part of the FMVSS, much less vehicles without a steering wheel and accelerator and brake pedals.
AV developers have found ways around the FMVSS. Speaking about Google’s first purpose-built self-driving car, the tiny Firefly, Seval Oz—former head of business development for Google’s self-driving car project—says, “Once the decision was made to assemble a new vehicle, the issue became more FMVSS compliance. This is why we deferred to a low-speed-compliant vehicle, which exempted it from requirements for high speed.”
But even with all its resources, Google quickly discovered that building cars in scale from scratch and only for low-speed purposes wasn’t feasible. And most automakers will want to leverage existing vehicle platforms to produce self-driving cars.
Although former NHTSA Administrator David Strickland notes that the FMVSS are designed to evolve over time, he acknowledges that for developers hoping to get AVs without a steering wheel or pedals approved for use on public roads, “You basically have to rewrite the whole standard, and that’s going to take a lot of effort and a lot of time. Instead of rewriting existing standards for an AV fleet, you from Performance Junk Blogger 6 https://ift.tt/2Gp4BoO via IFTTT

Hemp-Friendly Patagonia Sues Feds Over Utah Land Grab
Valley of the Gods, Utah (photo by Josh Ewing)
On Dec. 4, in an unprecedented repudiation of Theodore Roosevelt’s 1906 Antiquities Act, Pres. Donald Trump, at the behest of Utah lawmakers and energy and mineral interests, slashed the sizes of two national monuments in the state’s wild southeast corner, reducing Bears Ears by 85% and Grand Staircase-Escalante by 47%.
In immediate response, Ventura, Calif.-based outdoor retailer Patagonia, founded in 1973 by former accredited rock climber Yvon Chouinard, and several other groups banded together to sue the Trump administration.
“Utah lawmakers have always been hostile toward tribes,” says Natasha Hale, lead staffer of the Bears Ears Intertribal Coalition, who Patagonia has made contributions to via the Conservation Lands Foundation. “They’re completely disrespectful. And it’s been pretty evident in this campaign that they totally disrespect Natives. It’s an institutional racism and an outright blatant racism. There’s a denial that we have any type of say in our landscape.”
San Juan County, home to Bears Ears and Rainbow Bridge National Monument, is a rare place. Native Americans, including Pueblos and Navahos, outnumber white residents by 50% to 46%. It has some of the most stunning and fragile landscapes in the world, dotted with ancient dwellings, relics and petroglyphs. However, beneath the soil lies a multitude of extractable materials, which is at the root of this controversy.
(function($){ function bsaProResize() { var sid = "12"; var object = $(".bsaProContainer-" + sid + " .bsaProItemInner__img"); var animateThumb = $(".bsaProContainer-" + sid + " .bsaProAnimateThumb"); var innerThumb = $(".bsaProContainer-" + sid + " .bsaProItemInner__thumb"); var parentWidth = "772"; var parentHeight = "105"; var objectWidth = object.width(); if ( objectWidth < parentWidth ) { var scale = objectWidth / parentWidth; if ( objectWidth > 0 && objectWidth != 100 && scale > 0 ) { animateThumb.height(parentHeight * scale); innerThumb.height(parentHeight * scale); object.height(parentHeight * scale); } else { animateThumb.height(parentHeight); innerThumb.height(parentHeight); object.height(parentHeight); } } else { animateThumb.height(parentHeight); innerThumb.height(parentHeight); object.height(parentHeight); } } $(document).ready(function(){ bsaProResize(); $(window).resize(function(){ bsaProResize(); }); }); })(jQuery); (function ($) { var bsaProContainer = $('.bsaProContainer-12'); var number_show_ads = "0"; var number_hide_ads = "0"; if ( number_show_ads > 0 ) { setTimeout(function () { bsaProContainer.fadeIn(); }, number_show_ads * 1000); } if ( number_hide_ads > 0 ) { setTimeout(function () { bsaProContainer.fadeOut(); }, number_hide_ads * 1000); } })(jQuery);
Patagonia, which trains athletes and tests products at Bears Ears, has an long history of environmental activism. The company is a California benefit corporation, meaning it’s legally obligated to give 1% of its annual net revenue to nonprofit organizations that promote environmental conservation and sustainability. It’s pledged $74 million since 1985.
The Historic Beauty of Bears Ears
Many of the groups Patagonia has supported protect wild places in their local communities, including through national monument designation. The creation of Bears Ears was a direct result of Patagonia’s efforts.
President Barack Obama designated Bears Ears as a national monument shortly before he left office, on Dec. 28, 2016, after consulting local stakeholders, including San Juan County officials and tribal leadership. The designation protects Native American sites from vandals, theft and looting; preserves the delicate landscape; and makes extraction industry activities more difficult.
Obama was well within his rights to create Bears Ears. The Antiquities Act states that the President is authorized to designate historic landmarks, structures and “other objects of historic or scientific interest.” While it also says that the monuments “shall be confined to the smallest area compatible with proper care and management of the objects to be protected,” that standard has proven to be very subjective.
“We wanted to protect, as tribes, 1.9 million acres,” says Hale. They compromised on 1.3 million acres, which left the Daneros Uranium Mine outside the boundary for Bears Ears. Colorado-based Energy Fuel Resources, owners of Daneros, recently lobbied the Trump administration to have the monument shrunk.
Patagonia to the Rescue
The Moon Tower in Utah’s Valley of the Gods (photo by Josh Ewing)
The Patagonia lawsuit asserts that the company will suffer “direct and immediate injury from the revocation of the designation of the landmarks, structures and objects of the Bears Ears National Monument.” “The Administration’s unlawful actions betray our shared responsibility to protect iconic places for future generations and represent the largest elimination of protected land in American history,” Patagonia president and CEO Rose Marcario stated.
The company says that “removing protections for federal lands could result in permanent destruction of these treasured places,” and cites polls showing that 67% of Americans think that public lands should be protected.
Several Utah lawmakers called the designation a federal land grab, despite the fact that 66.5% of the state’s land is owned by the federal government. At the heart of the conflict is what many Western interest groups see as federal overreach; they’ve been smarting since President Bill Clinton’s designation of Grand Staircase-Escalante in 1996.
The Nevada-based Bundy family has been the most publicly extreme example of this, but they’re not without support among Utah politicians. In 2014, they joined current San Juan County Commissioner Phil Lyman in an all-terrain vehicle joyride up Recapture Canyon in Blanding. Lyman spent 10 days in jail and received three years probation for the stunt. Cliven Bundy, the family patriarch, later forced an armed standoff with federal authorities in Nevada over millions of dollars in unpaid grazing fees, and in 2016, his sons Ryan and Ammon illegally seized and ransacked the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon.
Some see Patagonia as a puffy-jacketed liberal interloper whose sole desire is to leverage the lawsuit for marketing purposes and to usurp Western land interests. But Patagonia has demonstrated loyalty to Utah by anchoring the Outdoor Retailer Sports Expo and Conference in Salt Lake City, which brings outdoor retailers like REI and Black Diamond to the state, along with millions of dollars. That relationship soured when Patagonia caught wind of a scheme between Utah lawmakers and the Trump administration in early 2017.
Federal Overreach Led by Zinke and Hatch
Sen. Orrin Hatch, Rep. Rob Bishop and Gov. Gary Herbert saw an ally in Secretary of Interior Ryan Zinke, and began plans to sue the U.S. government to shrink Bears Ears. Zinke has shown strong allegiance to ranching, oil, gas and mining interests looking to increase their exploitation of federal lands.
“Governor Gary Herbert and his buddies have spent years denigrating our public lands, the backbone of our business, and trying to sell them off to the highest bidder,” Chouinard wrote on the company’s website. “He’s created a hostile environment that puts our industry at risk. He should stop his efforts to transfer public lands to the state, which would spell disaster for Utah’s economy.”
Despite the fact that Utah’s outdoor industry employs more than 120,000 people and brings $12 billion to the state each year, far surpassing the output of extraction and ranching interests, Herbert was unswayed. This resulted in Patagonia withdrawing from the recent Outdoor Retailer Sports Expo, which then decided to move moved to Denver.
The Trump administration argues that national-monument designations violate the intent of the Antiquities Act, contending that they’re too large. It also contends the land must be mined for national security, to break American reliance on foreign sources for critical minerals and create energy independence. However, 90% of public lands are already available for oil and gas development; there are more than 7,500 drilling permits covering more than 19 million acres of unused public land leases.
RELATED: Gauging the Trump Effect on Congress and the DOJ
Zinke and Trump are not stopping at Bears Ears and Grand Staircase. Also in their crosshairs is Nevada’s Gold Butte National Monument, another recipient of Patagonia’s environmental patronage.
“There’s been this power among the shared interests of Patagonia and the tribe,” says Hale, who believes that Patagonia’s involvement has raised the profile of their work and inspired environmental and land-use awareness among other outdoor retailers. “It’s been exciting to see the tribes and Patagonia come out so strong.”
Gavin Noyes, executive director of Utah Diné Bikéyah, a Native American-run nonprofit that supports indigenous communities in preserving their heritage and is a co-complainant on the lawsuit, says it’s business as usual while the saga unfolds. “I feel optimistic that we will prevail in the lawsuit,” he declares. “The president doesn’t have the authority to shrink monuments.”
Sidebar: Patagonia’s Hemp Line
Patagonia mixes organic cotton and recycled polyester with hemp.
Patagonia has 22 items with hemp in its catalog, including shirts, T-shirts, tops, pants, shorts and coats (from $39-$149 at patagonia.com/shop/hemp-clothing).
“Though our hemp is not ‘certified organic,’ it’s grown organically using all natural ingredients: compost, animal manure and available rainfall,” its website explains. “Patagonia makes garments with 100% hemp or blends it with other fibers like recycled polyester, organic cotton and spandex… We currently import our high-quality hemp fabric from China and continue to hope this remarkably useful plant will one day grow without restrictions again.”
