in the middle of the night, i hear my netbook's hard disk whirring away.
i put my ear up to its keyboard, listening.
what joys do you wish to share, little creature of plastic and silicon?
are your circuits filled with glee, whenever you run a program, build a driver, play a song, display a screensaver?
when i wave at your webcam, do you, in your semiconductive heart, wish to wave back?

Installed Slackware on my ASUS EeePC last night on a whim and I’m happy with how it turned out.

Especially considering that I had to install from an old IDE hard drive connected over USB because I forgot all my flash drives at school.

Like the whole "DOOM runs on anything" meme is funny sure but technically you can run any program on any machine that has the processor, memory, and storage space for it. You may need to tweak some thing here and there to get it fully operational but really that's mostly what it hinges on.
I turned my windows netbook into a Debian server and then turned *that* into cloud-based storage I could dump and share and run any files I wanted to off my internet connection when I was in college by tying an external hard drive to it using an always-on connection. I still technically have the hard drive but I sold the netbook a long time ago. I also turned my MacBook from college into an always-on minecraft server for my college friends before Microsoft decided to give us actual multi-player support.
I also turned my MacBook into a windows OS emulator when I wanted to game because I got annoyed that Mac ports are usually poopoobad quality. So I would turn my MacBook on and then load up my windows os inside of the Mac os and then actually load the game.
Like yeah I went to school for programming but I actually learned how to do most of that as a kid because my dad had a computer that had no GUI, it was all command prompt and DOS. There are times when my current windows computers are annoying me because they won't do the thing I told them to do so I load up dos and then effectively go "I wasn't asking" at it.

Every time I open up my ancient iPad with its very second hand keyboard cover I am still struck with how absolutely incredible it is to have this kind of writing device readily available.
When I was a teenager laptops had like a 45 minute battery life and WiFi wasn’t a thing lmao how far we’ve come

"you're... cooking dinner? for me? what?"
to ayame hirako, from rin @/rinsakaguchi
@rinsakaguchi
Ayame was trying her best to not mess this one up. It was just eggs, and they were going over noodles. The yolk had to be just right to help make the sauce for the noodles, and she was doing just that. "Makin' sum'in tasty an' yer my test!" She finished frying the eggs before putting them over the noodles that were... already cold. A second later, she poked the yolks open so they could make the sauce for the noodles. "Annnnd~ done! Here ya go!"

TL;DR — I’m posting this because it made me smile, it’s so 2010s!
This is a photo I took back in 2013 when I worked in a computer shop and there was some “netbook craze” going on, well before the tablets made their appearance.
Needless to say, they were shit.
Windows XP run damn slow, you could barely surf the web and most people wanted to install things like the *whole* Office suite. Really? The best I can do is Notepad++
Linux? The average customer didn’t want Linux in the first place. You still wanted to try with Linux because you were a tech-savvy? Yeah, good luck with that, especially the network part: missing drivers for the cards and making one of those internet dongles was a pain in the ass.
Yet, we sold tons of this tiny evil machines. And tons ended up in the hands of some middle school kid because they were useless to the parents — but useful enough for MSN Messenger! — I honestly don’t remember if they could run decently any flash game…
This is some of the few things I’d never buy out of nostalgia, nope nope!

Back in 2009, Samsung sold these netbooks that shipped with win7 starter that could boot to something called "phoenix hyperspace". This is fascinating if you're a nerd.
