My Favorite Club: Net Impact
Tumblr media
As the first day of school approached, I had serious anxiety. Was I going to find my people at business school? I studied opera in college, then went to a conservatory for my master’s degree. After freelancing as a musician, I pivoted into the nonprofit world and immediately felt at home.  I knew business school was a good step for my nonprofit career, but would I have anything in common with my classmates?
At a Net Impact happy hour during the opening term, I found my people.
I had come to Georgetown with the intention of getting involved with the Net Impact chapter, but I had no idea it would become such an important part of my business school experience. At the happy hour, we introduced ourselves, talked about our backgrounds, and shared a mutual moment of, “What the heck are we doing here?” But then we started talking about our passions. My new friends wanted to learn about the intersection of business and environmental sustainability. They were active in various social justice movements. And they all believed that a business school education could help them achieve these impact goals.
Net Impact events are the highlight of my school weeks. From Net Impact’s innovative career days to its powerful speakers and workshops, the club’s programming never disappoints. I especially loved going to the Net Impact Conference in Detroit. In addition to the excitement of the conference, the trip was a fun way to get to know my fellow Net Impact members better.
Net Impact has given me a lot, so it’s only right that I return the favor. I now serve as Co-VP of the Social Impact Internship Fund (SIIF). Net Impact’s SIIF raises money for McDonough students working low or unpaid summer internships in the social impact space. Past recipients have worked in emerging markets microfinance, public education systems, and so much more. You can learn more about SIIF here: https://www.georgetownsiif.com/.
Georgetown believes in cura personalis, and this Jesuit value really ties our community together. If you are interested in the social impact space, McDonough is the right place for you.
We Net Impact-ers can’t wait to meet you in the fall!

June is Technology Month in the Nonprofit Utopia Community!
June is Technology Month in the Nonprofit Utopia Community!
It is hard to believe the month of July is here.  It seems like only yesterday that we were hitting the reset button in January, and positioning ourselves and our organizations for success. During the month of May, we focused on Spring Cleaning, getting our houses in order by bringing our organizations into compliance with state and federal disclosure requirements.  During the month of June, we…

Small Businesses
Tumblr media
molchomusicvideos Community of Small Firms Just finished an Online/Offline small company map to get a customer.    Ideas were based on action level of participants, size of this team, significance to the Client, PR possible and current relationships.  Here's an a excerpt in the analysis for people wanting to reach out into the business proprietor:5 Kinds of communities:1.  2.  Value-centric organizations ex: Fast Business and NetImpact where businesses align for a common good (#2 in dimension with exceptionally active and enthusiastic members)3.  Owner particular organizations ex: NAWBO and LBUSA that are driven by the ethnicity, sex, education or faith of their creator. (# 3 in dimension handled more as"networks" compared to"communities")4.   (Emphasize capital increasing and expansion )5.  General small business groups (Little, overall groups with maximum concentration of small companies )Based on these recommendations, we made a strategy for 2004/2005 for outreach to adoption of all those communities.  I'll post more excerpts soon.

This partnership allows PGS to expand degree programs and bring its mission to educate future sustainability leaders with the skills needed to change the world to a global market.
She comes to Presidio Graduate School from NetImpact where she served as President for the last 14 years. She brings an extensive background in organizational development and in creating innovative programs to help students and young professionals realize their ambitions. Today we see increasing need for leaders in the business and public sectors that can think and act in systems to create sustainable outcomes for all stakeholders. Building additional capacities to educate these transformative leaders is my passion.”
Said Board of Directors Secretary and a leader of the search process Malcolm Walter, "Liz comes to PGS with abundant enthusiasm, creative ideas, and unparalleled knowledge of what new MBA/MPA students are looking for. (Net) Impact in Action
Tumblr media
Net Impact Kogod is our American University chapter of the global Net Impact organization. This organization connects undergraduate, graduate, and professionals around the world who are interested in finding the intersection between profitability and positive social impact.
Our Kogod chapter serves the cohort by providing direct access to this massive network of business-minded folks from all industries and markets. Specifically, we provide students with social and learning events to examine how much American University students can push themselves to become more civically engaged and aware of critical national initiatives such as Sustainability, Impact Investing, Climate Justice, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion practices.
As part of this incredible organization - I was able to attend the Net Impact Leadership Conference this past September. This event connected graduate students and professional chapters from all over the world - reaching mission-driven individuals in over 20 different countries! Our daily activities included hands-on workshops and panels from sustainability thought leaders and advocates.
These learning opportunities and connections are so critical in digital and remote times - reminding us that we all have much more in common than we have apart. Not only does Net Impact Kogod reach a wide audience of students and advocates outside of campus - our cohort has committed to contributing to our local community as well!
As of this fall, Net Impact will be the official home of the AU Sustainability Club and is a partner of the AU Office of Sustainability providing attendance and support to their important student-centric mission.

I had an awesome experience at the @netimpact #NI17 Conference in Atlanta! I was able to learn from some awesome speakers and interact with corporations working towards a more sustainable world (AND I got a selfie with #toyota human support robot!!!) It was also somber and awesome to visit the Center for Civil Right and the historic sweet auburn district, where I saw MLK's childhood home and the church of his final sermon. #awesome
