souyo and Yosuke homophobia

I'm the worst kind of stan where I see Yosukechi's toxic traits and say what if they were "right". actually. what if Yosuke is soo unbearably homophobic not just because he's just a careless high school boy who wants to be funny / liked (the canon), but also bc unlike the rest of the cast he grew up in the city walking the line as the gofer / funnyman of an all-guy friend group in 2010s Japan?

like he thinks he's the one authority on gay guys bc he's "actually seen them", except he's only seen them getting their shit kicked in and doesn't actually know them at all. he's constantly ragging on Kanji and saying things like "that's for girls. idiot" because he's unconsciously anticipating the beatdown. you had better believe he'll throw people like Kanji and Naoto under the bus if it means Yosuke isn't going down with them. giving excuses like "if they didn't wanna get bullied they shouldn't have acted gay"

yes it is INCREDIBLY shitty of him. and it's even worse because they're in Inaba where people leave them alone bc nobody likes them, Yosuke included. but the thing is he's coming from a place where not being perceived as gay / a freak / a loser really is a matter of life or death. you can almost see how he's trying to "help" / "correct" Kanji by pushing him towards Naoto and jumping down his throat the instant he says something gay

queer people on here play Souji as cool with Kanji, but from the anime and other game dialogue we see the writers assume Souji is - like the average straight dudebro player - grossed out / amused when Kanji acts "gay". when "straight dudebro" Yosuke kicks off the shit-talking he's doing it to reject gayness, but also because he's your jester / your right-hand man! as a narrative device, he's saying what you can't; narratively he's desperate to make Souji like him. if we're being cynical and giving into the Shadow perspective, Souji is the only reason anyone (besides Teddie) in this group tolerates him.

to me all of this has happened to Yosuke before, and it's the cause of the 2 key elements to his character: (1) calling you Partner and being jealous (2) the girlfriend thing. he's exhausted and sick with himself for letting people use him (and hurting other people!) bc he can't stand being alone. his desire for a girlfriend is an attempt to escape that system of oppression; him calling you "Partner" is his attempt to rejoin it with him as your gofer. he calls you that, but he KNOWS you're not equals - that he's using you, riding your success

which is why Yosuke SL and especially Yosuke romance rules. because it deconstructs Yosuke's need to be a hero, to have a girlfriend, to fit into that system of oppression... he can just be him. be special to you, even though you're a guy. and stop living in terror and constantly correcting himself (and hopefully other people) for acting "gay". idk I have a lot of thoughts.
