Cimetière du Montparnasse
Opened in 1824, the Montparnasse cemetery, which has a surface area of 19 hectares, is the second largest necropolis in Paris, after the Père Lachaise cemetery. Full of trees, the cemetery occupies the former site of three farms, of which a listed tower belonging to one of the flour mills still stands. Among some of the famous works of art at the cemetery is 'Le Baiser' (The Kiss) by the sculptor Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957). Visitors can discover the burial places of famous men and women: Charles Baudelaire, Guy de Maupassant, Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Charles Garnier [and Samuel Beckett]. A haven of peace at the heart of one of the liveliest districts in Paris.

@swordsorceryandcats #swordsorceryandcats #stefankoidl #spadamagiaegatti #nerdcats #nerdcat #catart #catsart #arteegatti #weird #weirdcats #weirdcat #horror #orrore #horrorcats #streghe #witches #stregoneria #witchcraft #gattineri #blackcats #fantasycats #catsofweirdtales #weirdtales #instacat #catsofinstagram #catsgram #folklore #paura https://www.instagram.com/p/CUw6c5HMXvY/?utm_medium=tumblr

Sleepy Hollow inspired the writings of Emerson, Hawthorne, Thoreau, and even became memorialized in William Ellery Channing’s poem “Sleepy Hollow.” The cemetery also became the final resting place of these authors. Their graves, alongside those of other notable New England authors, including Louisa May Alcott, are located in the area known as Author’s Ridge, a popular destination for tourists wishing to pay homage.
Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord, Massachusetts is a prime example of a 19th century rural New England cemetery. Horace Cleveland, who, along with Frederick Law Olmsted, is credited with the professionalization of landscape architecture, designed the 17-acre core of the cemetery. As with other rural or “garden” cemeteries, Sleepy Hollow’s design elements include gently curving roads adapted to the site’s natural contours and naturalistic plantings. Before its designation as a cemetery, local citizens called the area, a hilly part of the Deacon Reuben Brown farm, “Sleepy Hollow.” Townspeople, including local Transcendentalists Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau and author Nathaniel Hawthorne and his wife Sophia, used Sleepy Hollow as a favorite spot for evening walks.

2023 by the numbers
Another year, another opportunity reflect... 2023 had good and not so good... so here is the year by the numbers...
1.7+ million steps taken & nearly 800 miles walked
116 hats donated and achieved a 10 year milestone of 1065 winter accessories donations.
30 museums of various sorts visited, more than half of which I’d never been to before (check out my new blog page which includes all my travel recommendations - nerdcation locations.)
8 years of civil service
7 states traveled to: Alaska, California, Colorado, DC, Illinois, New York, Virginia, (8 if you count the 5 hours in the Dallas airport)
7 years of Ally is a Verb (although I’ll be stepping back in 2024 to focus on other things and avoid the angst of the algorithm)
3rd season and so many Sundays as a guest artist with my friends at the Baltimore Farmer’s Market selling photographs, mixed media pieces, and watercolor notecards
2 great vacations in Manhattan and the Hudson Valley – all filled with art and air and awe and reflection
And a few solid reminders that depression and anxiety are chronic conditions that need ongoing attention, so my mental health is going to be a big focus in 2024…. breathing, creating, meditating, exploring, and remaining present (and avoiding that dang spiral).
I have so much for which I am grateful and that includes so many of you.
top nine (l to r)
birthday art acquisition
9 year no-more chemo anniversary in NYC
manifestation of headline fatigue
lunch at the san diego museum of art
Yayoi Kusama at the Hirshhorn
ice skating in central park
anchorage museum
ella jane in a dusting of snow
dawn in howard county, maryland
