Jyocho - しあわせになるから、なろうよ (Let’s Promise to Be Happy)

The Kyoto rock outfit continues their uniquely orchestral math rock with an album that's agonizingly short but perfect in every way. Jyocho uses these 24 minutes to put out their best songs yet, every single one stunning in its own way and making it clear that they are a force to be reckoned with.

Jyocho's vibrant brand of J-Rock has made them one of the most thrilling new bands to watch since their formation in the mid-2010s. It's that melodically-driven, explosive style of J-Rock that teeters on the edge of cliche, so overwhelmingly emotional and uplifting that it's impossible to listen to any part of the music without feeling a total sense of gratification coursing through you, but Jyocho's music is also instrumentally rich and explorative through their math rock inclinations that always ensures there's something more in what they do. With their second studio album, Let's Promise to Be Happy, they've made it even better than before, 24 glorious minutes of the best songs Jyocho has made to date. The six main songs that make up the bulk of the Let's Promise..., surrounded by two short instrumental tracks that open and bookend the album, are so full of life and detail it's hard to believe you exist in the same time as Jyocho listening to them, the band enriching every song with bubbly orchestration and magnificent progressions that never leave you without something to stare in awe at. These songs are as fun as they are complex, Jyocho always giving you something new to love each time you listen. Daijiro Nakagawa's frantic guitar playing leads the fight, consistently using technical fingerpicking and fast taps to create huge arpeggio lines on All the Same and Gather the Lights, but it's the airier elements of Let's Promise that give it such a cinematic, wide-lens scope in Hachi's prominent flute melody on All the Same and the fuzzy textural backings it provides to The End of Sorrow, only compounded by lead singer Nekota Nekato's swirling performances, falsettos as bright as the sun and with the energy to match. Let's Promise... is an album of movement, even when taking on piano balladry with Stay in the Circle, Hatch's drumstick taps and atmospheric background instrumentation from the rest of Jyocho make it impossible not to lose yourself in the naturalistic beauty they bring to life here. It'd be a shame that the album is only 24 minutes long if they didn't make every second of it so worthwhile, never is there a time while listening to Let's Promise... that you'd want to be doing something else. It's that ability to stuff so much into Let's Promise... that makes it, to use the word that inevitably comes up when talking about albums like this, sublime. Lots of pretty rock records come out every year, but there won't be any that fuse elements of chamber orchestration with recondite math rock and bubblegum pop melodies like Jyocho have. Measure the Dawn's transitions between twinkling guitar noodling from Nakagawa into noisy, distorted strums ends the album on an absolutely perfect note, bringing everything Jyocho's known for into one four-minute masterclass for modern math rock. They've always been a unique group, but Let's Promise... stands out in their discography by being the most fearless step into the future Jyocho's taken yet, not only a landmark for the band early on in their work together but an experience that leaves you starry-eyed and devoted to getting the most out of every moment you have with them. Maybe that short runtime is a blessing, in a way. You need to commit little time to take in all of Let's Promise to Be Happy, but Jyocho provides so much through it that it's almost absurd. Any song here could be easily argued for as the best, always made with a delicate hand and heaps of love poured into every note. They hold themselves to a high standard and meet it every time, their instrumental chops and connection to one another putting Let's Promise... far above everything else they've done thus far, an unbelievable achievement for a band who hasn't put out a single bad song yet. They've without question made their mark on this year with a perfect combination of heartfelt J-rock, collected and careful math rock, and the bliss of classical orchestration to convene at a central point of harmony whose potency cannot be understated. It's an album that's golden like no other, a rosy reminder of the sensational band Jyocho will forever be.

As I was falling asleep tonight, I was remembering what someone I had talked to earlier said; failure was the word they used for a situation possibly not turning out the way they had hoped. I sympathized and empathized because I remember being in that place; wanting so badly to be able to keep it together or to know that it would work out, but in my gut I knew differently. And endings are not failures- they are beginnings.” Such wise words and such an amazing reminder. It’s okay to have wants and desires. It’s okay to feel sad if it doesn’t turn out the way you had hoped. But if it doesn’t, you haven’t failed. You simply followed your heart or your intuition and knew it wasn’t the path for you. There is no shame in doing what you know is the best decision for both involved. You can love someone, but also realize that you can’t continue growing in the same pot anymore. Self-Fundraising Post: Chair Broke, Need New One

So I usually say I don't need money but I've had a minor chair based emergency. Long story short my insurance just went up by $300 a month because you know Florida is such a great state. And then my office chair broke so I've got nothing but a really uncomfortable folding chair to sit in and try to work.

This is normally the part where I'd announce some kind of special commission drive to raise money for a new chair. But, since I haven't finished patreon rewards yet I can't quite do this. So... I will survive with a folding chair and buy a really cheap chair if I need to, but it would be nice to have a real chair that doesn't destroy my back to help with things. So, I guess small donation drive but can't offer any rewards for anyone who wants to help me with my chair problems.

As always I want to stress I'm not going to die anything if I can't afford this. I'll make do. Please only donate if you want to, and please don't donate if you don't have enough money especially with me not able to offer any rewards. Every little bit does count. I really want to get a nice $500 chair so I can have one that lasts, helps my back and doesn't break within a year like the last ones but obviously beggars can't be choosers so at this point just going to focus on what I can get. Not that I'll complain if I get $500 in donations or enough where I can afford one of those, but yeah. Keep donations reasonable to what you want to get and can afford, not to my lofty dreams.
