Prompt: Nicky dragging/forcing andreil along to pride

disclaimer: I have no idea what one does at a parade, much less pride, but here you go lmao

Neil isn’tsure how Nicky managed to convince them all to come, but he suspects Andrew’smain reason for coming isn’t necessarily the need to connect with other people.

He isn’tsure what the goal of it all is either, but he doesn’t say it Nicky, who’s characteristicallyexcited. It could be interesting, he thinks, or it could end in another riotlike Binghamton; either way, Neil makes sure to keep an eye on his belongings.It’s second nature by now, which makes it easier, but in the first five minuteshe has to tell Kevin his wallet is almost falling out of his pocket.

Neil isn’tsure why Kevin is there too, but it may have to do with the fact that Andrewtagged along without saying anything and Aaron is away visiting Katelyn’sfamily: between a full day of wasting away at the house in Columbia and takingpart in a pride parade where no one will really look for him, the choice isclear enough for Kevin.

Or so Neilthinks.

Nicky dragsthem to a stand set up on the large square where the parade is set to start.There are already too many people and so many colors that it’s difficult tofocus on anything at once. Flags are carried around on poles or draped aroundpeople’s shoulders like capes. Neil spots the rainbow flags that he’s gotten toknow well from the small replica Nicky keeps taped to the wall next to his bed,but also several others.

“What dothe other colors mean?” he asks as they pass a gaggle of girls carrying pinkand blue flags.

“Oh, it’sfor every other communities,” Nicky says. “That one’s the bi flag, forexample.”

He pointsthem all to Neil from the large array of fabric on display at the stand. It’sinteresting but there are too many for Neil to remember; he might have to askAndrew later what each flag they see means.

“Don’t youwant one?” he asks as Nicky ignores the umbrella stand the flags are all stuckinto.

“Nah, Ibrought my own.”

He unzipshis bag to show Neil a large patch of fabric, neatly folded.

“I’ll takeit out when we’re marching,” Nicky says. “It’s too big to wave around rightnow.”

“I thoughtyou only had the tiny one.”

“Erik’smother sent it to me for my birthday.” Nicky’s smile is wider than Neil hasever seen. “She sewed it herself.”

Neil feelsa petty sense of revenge on Nicky’s behalf. The thought that the Hemmicks are livingin the same town where their son is freely celebrating his sexuality after whatthey’ve done to him, waving around a flag made by the woman he talks about as asurrogate mother, fills him with satisfaction.

“Do youwant something?”

Neilblinks, putting back down a colorful bracelet. “What for?”

“Becauseit’s Pride? Honestly, Neil, the whole point is to have fun.”

Neilglances around the stand. “But I’m not gay.”

“That’sokay. The rainbow flag represents the whole community. Or—here, come on.”

The displayNicky drags him too is filled with little makeup brushes. Some of them are opento show the colors they trace, with an example traced on paper next to it.

Nickypoints out one of them to Neil, much more sober than the others. Thepredominant gray and black fit Neil much better than the violent colors of theflag Nicky’s traced on his hands.

“Facepaint,” he says. “You could trace them over your scars.”

The idea istempting. Almost everyone around them is wearing colors on their face andattracting stares for something he can easily remove at the end of the day is aluxury Neil often wishes he had. He’s looking around for a mirror, brush inhand, when Andrew finds him.

“Oh,” Neilsays. Andrew is holding a very small rainbow flag, the kind that can fit in apencil holder. “Could you?”

Andrewtakes a look at the brush and gestures for Neil to crouch down. They settle ona small post placed at the corner of a street to prevent cars from entering apedestrian zone; for once, Neil has to look up to meet Andrew’s eyes.

“Don’tmove,” Andrew warns, cupping Neil’s chin to hold him still.

Neil closeshis eyes. The brush pushes right against the ruined skin of his cheeks beforehe can remember to ask Andrew to cover his scars.

When heopens his eyes, Andrew is still bent over him. Neil’s eyes are level with thelittle flag stuck in Andrew’s breast pocket.

He reachesup to place a small kiss on Andrew’s lips, just because he can.

“You wantto see something crazy?” Nicky says, jumping between them as Neil stands up.

“No,”Andrew says, but he doesn’t move away.

“Look!”

Neilfollows Nicky’s finger to see Kevin speaking with a woman decked blue, purple,and pink.

“So?”

“So,they’ve been talking for like ten minutes straight,” Nicky says. “Or not. Ha.”

“He hasThea,” Neil says, wondering what is so fascinating about Kevin playing nicewith strangers. The lack of cameras around him, maybe.

“He’s notinterested in her,” Andrew says. “Look, she’s giving him one.”

“Oh.”

The womanis busy tying a bracelet around Kevin’s wrist, laughing at something he says;Neil notices the basket full of tricolors bands she’s carrying with her for thefirst time. She tugs once on the ends to make sure it’s secure, then theyseparate.

Kevin isalready fidgeting with the bracelet when they walk up to him. He’s looking distinctivelyless comfortable and notices their gazes immediately. Unfortunately for him,he’s wearing a short-sleeved shirt.

“I,” hestarts, trailing off.

Nicky dragshim into a hug before Kevin can say anything else.

“I’m justso proud of you,” he says. “Look how fitting it is.” He waves around at thepeople assembled with his arm hooked over Kevin’s shoulder.

“Don’t makea fuss,” Kevin says.

“Alright.Come on, it’s starting.”

The crowdis slowly making its way into one of the wide avenues leading off the square.The music plays suddenly much louder. A loud wave of cheering follows thedeparture of the first float.

They helpNicky unfold and drape his flag over his shoulders. He was right: it’senormous, dragging on the ground. Andrew picks up one corner to lift it off anddoesn’t let go.

Neil grabshis other hand.

“To be onbrand,” he says, waving around.

Andrewrolls his eyes, but allows it.

As someone who actually really likes kevaaron for their potential dynamic and interactions, I agree that this happens quite a bit. There's a lot of fics to be found where they're both very in-character, and those are great, but it really bugs me when I come across a fic where one of them is more approachable.

On the other side, with pre-established fics I can get behind the idea of Aaron being slightly more approachable, since it's canon that when he feels secure in a relationship he'll open up more, like he does with Katelyn. ("(Aaron) seemed so alive (Katelyn's) presence that Neil couldn't hold it against her." That's not the exact quote, I'm sure, but it's the best I can do off the top of my head.)

Kevin, on the other hand, doesn't seem all that open with any of the other Monsters, and in my opinion there's not enough on-page interactions between Thea and Kevin for me to feel like he's particularly open with her. He does have his moments of vulnerability, but he either leaves or only lets Neil and Andrew see him during those times (as far as I can tell). Basically, I don't think Kevin would open up too much in a relationship, at least a new one. Maybe later in a relationship, but then, I think Aaron would be the same way, taking his time to open up to Kevin in a potential relationship. (romantic or otherwise)

On the topic of shared trauma, I think that would be something that would eventually draw them together. As far as I can tell, Aaron is the only other person who has experience grieving for someone who hurt him repeatedly (it's p obvious that he grieves for Tilda even though she really messed him up), so this is more of a headcanon but I can see Aaron being the most comfort to Kevin during those times if they ever, for whatever reason, talked about Riko's death and Kevin's trauma in relation to Riko and the Ravens.

Idrk know what my point with all of this was, but like you said, it's a discussion :)

Will I get hate for this? I don't know. Who cares. This is my blog, I can share my thoughts. However, keep in mind that I am not targeting anyone with this and it really is meant to be a discussion (please ignore my occasional saltiness that I can't keep in check sometimes).

Alright so, I've said many times that I do not get Kevaaron. I don't understand the hype, the dynamic, nor where it came from. People have told me it's about the 'shared trauma' and that they would 'understand each other' but I don't really see it.

Nevertheless, I actually have enjoyed some Kevaaron fics for the literary pieces that they are and the writer's ability to explore the characters.

The problem, for me, starts when people feel the need to change the characters entirely. Change their personalities, make them more 'approachable'. Have them act 'out of character' as we call it. It happens a lot, with every ship, but with Kevaaron, it's a lot more evident, perhaps because people do not really know how to handle the characters and simply want to ship two guys together.

(Again, this is in no way personal and I'm not saying if you ship Kevaaron, you aren't valid or you are just looking for guys to ship. I'm talking about a specific group of people. If you feel offended by this then... well, maybe it's about you).

Then again, someone could argue that, what's the problem with writing someone out of character? We can interpret them any way we want.

Well yeah, we live in a free world, you can do whatever you want. But that doesn't mean you can't think of the impact of what you are writing (especially if you have many followers or if your headcanon is reposted many times). Changing characters like Kevin, who are deemed unapproachable and 'assholes', tells me that you do not actually like his character and you have to adjust key elements of his personality. It tells me that you do not bother understand why he is like this, why he is acting so cold and distant. That you think a ship, a love story, is all it takes for someone to change and heal.

I don't think I have to explain why is this wrong.

Am I salty without a reason? Maybe. It just bothers me. It bothers me how people feel the need to completely change a character's personality just now when the fandom has finally started appreciating him. And when his hastags are overfilled with that ship and with headcanons that are ooc, I can't help but feel as if a character will always be reduced to the potential romance and to stories by people who don't actually like his personality and just want to change it for the sake of a ship.

Like I said, this is a discussion, so feel free to comment and even correct me or tell me that I'm wrong. I really do want to understand the whole situation.

not because she’s hiding her scars tho (which, trust me, she has a lot of scars, like 50% of her body has scars and she get more when she goes with neil to evermore)

she actually likes her scars; she’s quite proud of them, shows she’s survived a lot of shit

part of the reason she covers up is cus of neil (ofc)

when he used to he see her scars he was also reminded of how most of those were because of him, because louisa was protecting him

he always hated that he could never protect her when all she’s done is protect him

he often feels like a burden to her and her scars kinda amplify his self-hate

and louisa noticed this a long time ago so, she covers up

the other have of the reason is cus it helps to hide her disgustingly large amount of knives (like srsly she has so many)

she often forgets to put in her contacts at times or redye her hair when her roots start growing so neil has to remind her

even though louisa is way more like nathan then neil will ever be, he always feels safe with her and loves her more than anything else in the world

he’s just as protective of louisa as she is of him

also, louisa doesn’t go pro like neil does

instead, she becomes ichirou’s right hand

when neil finishes talking to ichirou about his life, ichirou tells neil to wait outside while he talked to louisa

and ichirou asks louisa if she wants the same thing her brother wanted

and louisa was confused cus like she didn’t say or do anything during the entire time ichirou was talking with neil so why ask?

she didn’t care what she did when she got out of collage as long as she was near neil so she can protect him

but neil had andrew to protect him now so… was she really needed?

ichirou spoke to her about how she killed her father’s men (he got reports i guess, nathan’s men were kengo’s men technically)

people were sent to the last place they heard from nathan’s followers and they found their bodies bloody and mangled

louisa smirked ever so slightly, nodding her head to ichirou’s implied question (“was it you?”)

so, ichirou makes a different deal with louisa and she becomes his right hand and is held at a much, much higher status than nathan

i don’t know how i’d want their relationship to be though im caught between it being just a business thing, a way for her to protect neil from the inside as well

or have them have like a mutual respect for each other w louisa being almost as fiercely loyal to him as she is to neil (but again, neil will always be #1)

i also kinda want her and ichirou to get together at some point

most likely when louisa graduates from college

p.s. when her and neil get kidnapped by nathan and lola louisa puts up a hell of a fight

like she hurts lola bad

and nathan too

but they drugged her so she was pretty weak and couldn’t kill them like she wanted

I think renee is a LOT more willing to admit when she’s in the wrong, and her life is pretty much a balance of redemption and honesty so I think she apologizes very earnestly and seriously and allison basically snorts and tells her it’s forgotten and goes in for neck kisses

allison is a liiiittle too proud to apologize but when she knows she’s done BAD and when they’re alone & intimate in their apartment allison will come in crying and bare-faced and apologize and apologize and apologize

I think allison’s loss is such a fresh wound in her mind and it’s so constant. She still feels so brutally undervalued for her talent and her ingenuity and her strength, and like. that gets bad. Renee’s loss runs deeper and harder and she can’t even think about it, most of the time. She’s making constant amends, but no matter how many times she prays before bed the nightmares still come. (so does allison, lighting sweet smelling candles and brushing renee’s hair back and kissing her face)
