Second piece in my series of human infrastructures unintentional effects on wildlife.
the photo I used as direct reference was taken by @strangebiology & used with permission! You can find the whole album on flickr here.
I fell in love with these pictures cause i just think there is such a beauty to them. But also it starts making you think more about human infrastructure.
Idk but i think a lot of us think about fences as benign in the landscape but working on this piece i started thinking more abt, what do fences keep in? What do they keep out? And what do they disrupt or harm? intentionally or not.

In 2021, I took Emillie Ferris’ class on thread painting. I then bought a couple of her patterns from Etsy, started this one, and then everything got put away when what’s now my office got remodeled.
I was going through things and found all my embroidery supplies and this painted lady butterfly a quarter finished, and went, ya know I could finish that…
Painting/drawing and I aren’t talking 100% yet, so PERFECT creative outlet.

“Community Spotlight: Ana Luiza Catalano: Needle Painting #Birds and their Songs”
via EGA
“Ana Luiza Catalano is an ornithologist with a PhD in Ecology. Having focused her research on bird song, Ana has cataloged hundreds of bird recordings in the process of her work. She caught our eye when she began posting intricately detailed avian embroideries using needle painting techniques. Lots of embroidery artists draw inspiration from the natural world in their work. Ana, however, takes her practice to the next level, capturing the sound of her subjects alongside their portraits to paint a fuller picture of the birds. We sat down with Ana to learn when and why she began embroidering birds, and how stitching their songs enhances the experience of viewing her work.”

Way back in March I found a beautiful piece of art by @sixofclovers that I fell in love with. So after getting permission from them I created a pattern for personal use and just finished it! This is my second attempt at needle painting and I’m still getting used to color blending but I’m extremely proud of myself.
Notes of interest:
French Knots were used to make the Sherpa style of Caleb’s coat lining.
The thickest part of the piece is Essek’s collar, where six strands were used to give the fluffy illusion
After I created the pattern, I used my Cricut to draw the pattern onto the fabric.
35 different colors of DMC embroidery thread were used to make this piece.
I only stabbed myself 4 times (and drew blood) while stitching!

And to start my blog with a textile artwork, here's my embroidery treasure!
School Project "Chimera" -
One of my projects I'm really proud of. This all started in November 2020 in art school, because of Lockdown the whole process kind of slowed down and suddenly it was 2022😅 I was so glad to finally finish this project in 2022, it was really stressful but in the end I'm really proud of me😊
Wanted to show you the whole process of this project, sadly forgot to take more pictures of the process but at least I have some pictures to show you.
And yes its Uta from the anime Tokyo Ghoul, just with a few detail changes since my teacher didn't let me copy the original character version for my needle painting project.
As an artist he's a huge inspiration for me, just the whole character is so awesome, mysterious and cool! In the end it looks really awesome 😊
Why did I choose the title "Chimera"?
Actually I wanted to name my project dream but in Latin (somnia), but this sounded too much like something from Final Fantasy 😅then I searched a synonym for dream and Chimera was a cool synonym so I chose this as the title. I mean ghouls are kind of Chimeras so it kind of suits it.

"Blind to the purpose of the brute divine." -Better Love by Hozier.
This line in the song lives in my head rent free and it actually inspired me to do this whole series & specifically this piece. 'Cause it made me think about how when birds strike windows they have no idea what they have hit and that it must seem like a divine hand thats come out of nowhere and taken their life. Not that birds think abt the divine at all, but u get me.
Anyways, gettin on my soapbox:
@flapcanada on instagram has great resources to help out folks looking for ways to reduce bird window strikes! please go check them out if you are able! Bird window strikes in residential areas account for just SO MANY unnecessary bird deaths it is baffling. Birds are already experiencing population declines from the pressures of habitat loss/climate change/outdoor cats etcetcetc. It really helps to take steps to reduce window strikes where we are able.
Fall migration is ramping up here in north america so now is the perfect time to treat your windows if you have the time!

More needle painting shenanigans.
Pattern is by Trish Burr, which I bought for practice. And I went and bought actual DMC For this one instead of off brand floss.
The next piece I do won’t have the sticky print on stabilizer, I’ll actually draw on the fabric with some fabric marking pens. I like the stabilizer, but it’s a bear to get out of detailed projects.
Enjoy this process shot! The actual piece is almost done. I just don’t know when I’ll finish it.
