Awake at Last

After months of being in a coma, Emmett finally wakes up. Bridget rushes to see him, but Emmett isn't as eager.

The Tempest is flying through the Faroang system when Bridget gets the news.

She and Jaal are in the middle of watching a movie; more engrossed in each other’s company than in the actual plot, when SAM decides to notify her.

“Pathfinder,” he tells her urgently. “There is an incoming message on the vid-comm channel.”

Sighing, she asks, “Is it Tann? Or Addison? Unless it’s life or death, I think they can afford to wait another hour…”

“It is from Dr. Carlyle.”

In an instant, Bridget is on her feet, sprinting for the meeting room. Jaal scrambles after her, wondering what has her in such a hurry.

He comes to a stop at the base of the ramp, worriedly glancing up as she answers the call.

“Harry?” she asks frantically, fear dripping from her voice. “What is it? Did something happen to Emmett?”

“Bridget! Thank goodness you picked up…Emmett is fine, but…I needed to tell you. He’s awake.”

In that moment, she swears she stops breathing. Scant moments pass before she’s speaking into her comms. “Kallo, change of plans. Take us to the Nexus. Now.”

There’s a brief pause of hesitation before she receives an answer. “Right away, Pathfinder. Setting course for the Zheng He system.”

Bridget turns off her comm and releases a heavy sigh as she leans against the meeting room table. She feels bad for being so short with her pilot, but right now, there’s only one thing on her mind. She has to see him. To know for sure that he’s okay.  

“I’ll be there as soon as I can, Harry…”

“Roger that…I’ll make sure he’s still in one piece by the time you get here.”

Harry hangs up after that and while his quip would ordinarily make Bridget chuckle, right now she’s too overcome with worry to see the humor in it.

Jaal cautiously approaches Bridget where she’s leaned over the console, tentatively placing a hand on her shoulder. “Darling One…Are you all right?”

She chuckles half-heartedly, stepping into his arms and hugging him tightly. “I wish I knew…” she mutters, letting out a heavy sigh.

Rumbling thoughtfully, Jaal lays his cheek on top of her head. “Would you like to talk about it?”

With a sigh, she leans into his embrace. “No…I think…Right now, I just need some company.”

Smiling, Jaal pulls her closer. “I think I can manage that.”

When they arrive at the Nexus, Bridget speeds through the crowds as fast as she can. She silently curses the people who get in her way. Don’t they realize they’re keeping her from her brother?

Thankfully, she arrives at the Hyperion med bay soon enough. She enters the door and spots him almost instantly. There, sitting up on his bed and chatting with Harry is Emmett. She lets out a small gasp, her feet carrying her forward.

Tears begin to well in her eyes and she approaches him with arms spread wide. “Emmett!”

He looks at her in shock, his expression taken aback before his brows furrow in anger. “You lied about Dad.”

Her smile begins to fade and she takes a step forward. “Oh, Em…” she says sadly. She tries to go in for a hug, to comfort him, but he crosses his arms over his chest, glaring at her.

Bridget lamely drops her arms, hurt swelling in her throat. It’s been so long since she’s been able to speak with Emmett properly. She’s been so worried about him these last few months, and she can’t even give him a hug. She knew her lie would come back to bite her in the ass, but she hadn’t realized just how angry her twin would be about it.

“Why?” Emmett growls, venom in his voice.

She lets out a heavy sigh, tentatively sitting next to him on the bed. “I had no idea what that kind of news would do to you. You were in such a fragile state as it was…I didn’t want to hurt your recovery.”

“Yeah, well, it’s hurting pretty bad right now,” he says bitterly.

She balls her hands into fists, clenching them atop her lap. “I know…But…I hoped I could be here to help you through it.”

A few moments pass before Emmett reaches toward her with one arm, his voice cracking slightly as he utters, “Come here.”

Instantly, she falls into his embrace, a warbled sound escaping her throat.

She wants to keep holding tight and never let go.

“It’s just you and me now, Bridge,” he says quietly.

Bridget gives a solemn nod. “The terrible twins,” she murmurs.

This doesn’t feel real. After all this time, she never thought she’d be able to hold Emmett again. She soaks up the moment for all it’s worth.

They sit like that for a few minutes, each trying to cope with their emotions. Eventually, Emmett speaks again. “I’ve been hearing rumors that you’re the new pathfinder?”

Bridget lets out a cynical chuckle. “Yeah…Dad’s parting gift.”

“I’m sensing there’s a story there.”

Sighing, she answers, “Back on Habitat-7…we encountered both the kett and a bunch of Remnant tech. Long story short, things went to shit and my helmet got busted. So, Dad…gave me his.”

Emmett snorts sarcastically. “Huh, so he did know how to be a parent after all.”

“Don’t I know it?” Bridget mutters.

They sit in silence for a bit before she adds, “I’m sorry for lying to you.”

Sighing, Emmett says, “It’s okay. I get why you did it. Honestly, I’m not sure what I would have done if the situation was reversed.”

“Well, the good news is…now that you’re awake, it’s only a matter of time before you get to join our wacky adventures.”

“Why wait? I’m ready now.”

Emmett attempts to stand, but his legs begin to buckle beneath him. Bridget manages to catch him in time and utters a “Careful!” before helping him back onto the bed.

Harry rushes over, a stern look upon his face. “No way are you fit for duty, sir. You need to take it easy.”

“Yeah? Says who?” Emmett bites back with snark.

“The pathfinder,” Bridget says with a raised brow. “You’re to stay in bed and recover. That’s an order, Specialist Ryder.”

“Hmph,” he mutters in response. “Pulling rank already?”

She brushes her hand across his forehead, a sad look on her face. “Only because I care. I need you at your best. It’ll take time before you’re fully ready.”

He sighs heavily, leaning back in the medical bed. “Yeah, yeah…”

Smiling softly, Bridget stands up. “I’ll let you get some rest.”

“You’d better be back. This place is boring as hell.”

Laughing quietly, she grins. “Don’t worry, you won’t get rid of me that easily.”

hi there - I've been heavily thinking about my beloved Bellatrix Shepard and felt like she needs more of an introduction and background when compared to my dear Lorelei Ryder, who has a full-blown series that we're halfway through... so, buckle up fuckers. ^.^

Also - this will consist of SFW and NSFW facts about her.

She's a February Pisces (February 22nd, 2154)

She has a younger brother, Sirius Cillian Shepard - who is a May Taurus (May 1st 2158)

She has 11 tattoos - four of which were gang-related to the Reds, to which she eventually had covered up. (the list will be placed below the first 45)

She was born in Galway, Ireland - she's an Irish gal.

Her face-model is based off of a mix between Olivia Wilde/Phoebe Tonkin

6. She is a raging bisexual and isn't afraid to express her interest in men and women.

7. She was known as the "Snake," within the Reds for her literal flexibility and metaphorically when it came to adjusting people's perception of her. (She easily adapts to situations and purposely plays on peoples' opinions of her)

8. She graduated at the top of her class during the N7 program without an official high-school diploma/GED/etc.

9. On the IQ scale, she scored 130 - which is measured as "Moderately-gifted"

10. She experienced substance withdrawals during her time in boot camp - she was a heavy user of marijuana as a teenager.

11. The only friend who has known her the longest that she keeps in touch with is a woman she met in boot camp - Asahi Nakamura. Asahi knows more about Bellatrix than Anderson, who become a father-like figure for her.

14. She’s an alternative music/rocker kind of gal - she’ll listen to Bad Omens, Sleep Token, and Stone Sour. She much prefers earlier music to most of the stuff released during [her] present day.

15. Her parents’ death drastically changed her mental state - she was a fairly happy child, but due to those events, she closed herself off emotionally… especially when it comes to romantic partners.

16. Unknown to the public, she has a sister-in-law (albeit they don’t even know that she has a brother), and that she’s also an aunt.

17. Her niece, Deirdre, was named after her - Deirdre is her middle name. The first person to hold her (except Sirius and Andromeda) was Bellatrix, who was present at the hospital.

18. She was in a romantic relationship with Dr. Harry Carlyle’s younger sister, Evelyn Carlyle. However, this relationship was unknown to many.

19. Bellatrix is more of a cat-person; they’re much smaller and can comfortably lay on her lap while she’s working and some other reasons.

20. Her dream vacation is to visit Japan after hearing about all of the attractions and places that her friend, Asahi, told her about during their time in boot camp.

21. Her pain tolerance is fairly above average; she hardly experienced too much discomfort during her time getting tattooed. The one that hurt the most was her back, but due to how long it was being worked on as well as it being a cover-up.

22. Not many know, but she secretly enjoys reading paper copies or romance/fantasy books. They’re an escape for her from reality.

23. Many think her to be a pessimist, but she’s actually a realist. She’s seen too much shit to be optimistic, but she’s been proven wrong enough times to not be pessimistic…

24. She falls head over heels for Kaidan; he sees right through her facade around the crew and that she has her walls up for reasons, but the fact that he calls her out and still stands beside her is one of the reasons why she falls for him.

25. Kaidan may have fallen for her first, but Bellatrix fell harder - that’s for damn sure.

26. Bellatrix may seem like the worst role-model for children with her attitude, but she raised Sirius and spent time around Lorelei and Magnus Ryder as teenagers; she knows how to deal and work with kids since she had to raise one when she was a pre-teen.

27. Due to her childhood and teenage years, Bellatrix is fairly skilled at styling/cutting hair since she had to do her own and didn’t trust the others within the Reds. She also learned some tips from her friend, Asahi.

28. Out of the entire crew (ME1) and besides Kaidan, she’s closest to Garrus and Liara. (ME2) She is close with Jack, Kasumi, and Thane as well (Unbeknownst to her, Thane developed feelings for her). (ME3) James got to know her well and became good friends before the events since he was assigned to watch over her during house arrest and her relationship is rekindled with Kaidan - she’s good friends with everyone, but the ones listed know her really well.

29. Had she not romanced Kaidan or moved on from him, she likely would have gotten together with Thane since she felt a faint spark with him as time went on. He also saw through her facade, which took her off guard yet in a different approach. (When compared to Kaidan).

30. Bellatrix occasionally drinks, but she has not smoked and/or consumed marijuana since she joined the Systems Alliance - she does not want to take the chance of relapsing.

31. She’s a side-sleeper and unless Kaidan is in bed with her, she’s a light sleeper too. If he’s with her, she’s not a heavy sleeper, but it does take a little bit more to wake her up.

32. She’s a morning person; she’s used to waking up early and getting to work, rather than being a night owl and wasting precious time to sleep.

33. Her mom was murdered by her father, who then killed himself (he did so out of fear/paranoia due to his enormous debt with loan sharks) - she was ten years old while Sirius was only six. They were both coming home from their last day of school.

34. She hated all of the nickname variants of her given name and it was all that was used during her time within the Reds. She hates being called Bella and/or Trixie.

35. The only nickname that she’s open to is one that Kaidan suggests when she wants to be unrecognizable and that is “Ellie,” which she had never been called that before.

10. Favorite trope/element/scenario in fic?

I'm a fan of romance tropes - two people/one bed, power plays (eg. boss/secretary), cuddling for warmth in survival situation. I use these shamelessly in so many of my fics, but I LOVE writing them and reading them.

17. Any characters who you can't stand to see in pain?

Nope. Well - animals? I can't stand to see animals in pain in fics/books/movies. But human or alien characters? They're fair game.

22. Biggest turn-ons in fic?

See my tropes up there? Any of them. But I do love a sexy age gap with an older man and younger woman (thank you Harry Carlyle and Sara Ryder!) and I quite like the obsessed evil stalker who can't get the good girl out of his head - which is why I like Kai Leng x femShep. I'm a fan of dark romance where things are messed up, but super smutty.

34. Do you like UAs (universe-alterations, when the main universe and characters are the same but one plot point/decision/outcome is altered)?

Sometimes? I've written a few myself and I always find I have cool ideas, but I don't read them very much unless the idea *really* grabs me.

44. How fluffy is too fluffy?

Hmm. When the characters become OOC and sickeningly sugary sweet? I like fluff, but not when you have have characters acting and saying things which they would *never* say I find it more funny than sexy or loving. For example, when you have characters who are cold blooded killers, you don't need to put them in these painfully domestic situations, giving PDAs and professing their love in front of their "friends".

Favorite food: I have issues with food. I've always been an incredibly picky eater and even though I'm not afraid anymore to try new things, I never really had a favorite dish. If you asked me what I like to eat? Sandwiches. And potato dishes. 😬

Fixing Canon: 'Twelve Years'. I wanted to fix the in-game romance of James Vega and Femshep, because the scene as it was, was just plain icky.

I just want them to kiss: In 'Hearts Laid Bare' I wanted a kiss after Blackwall's trial when he's reconciling his past and his future all with the inquisitor by his side. It doesn't get addressed outside a couple conversations but her support means the world to him.

This idea wouldn't shut up until I wrote it: How Harry Carlyle and Marlo Ryder got started on their secret relationship in A Dose of Vitamin Me. They literally took over my brain.

Found a prompt list: 30-day NSFW challenge--Mass Effect. I was trying to get out of my comfort zone and this was how I did it.

Everyone lives and nothing hurts: THANE DESERVED A HAPPY ENDING DAMMIT. so I wrote it myself in 'Unexpected'. He gets to reconcile with his son and have his Siha too.

Saw the plot and needed it for my OTP: The Miraculous Takes of Ladybug and Chat Noir and Superman inspired my Superhero AU: We Could be Heroes. I wanted the love square with themselves all while in the more adult world of journalism instead of school.

I was joking with my friend and it happened: I decided James game Kaidan the nickname 'Glowstick' and @forlornmelody was constantly giggling because she would think of disco stick and Lady Gaga's "Love Game" so I had to.

I woke up at 3am with an idea: 'Bound to You' gets credit for this one. I woke up thinking about how Solas put up the veil to seal the old Elves away because they killed Mythal. Then he makes us activate all those elven artifacts to “strengthen the veil” (either that’s not what they really did or he SERIOUSLY wanted to be stopped) and then he kills Mythal to get her soul and the old God soul to bring himself back up to full power so he can tear the veil down…But what if you had an Inquisitor that drank the Well of Sorrows, and was tied to Mythal? Would that mean that they were tied to Solas because he took her soul? Do you think they also felt Mythal's death? I feel like they must have and if they were in a relationship that he'd be easier to find in Trespasser due to the nature of the bond. And what if he killed Mythal BECAUSE the Inquisitor drank from the Well and was tied to her? In his own twisted way he thought he was helping and didn't realize how deep the bond went, considering Mythal controlled the Inquisitor and forced them to stop Morrigan. And then he felt guilty, because now that power is his, but he loves her and doesn't want to MAKE her do anything, and only then does he realize the gravitas of his actions.

This is going to be so HOT: I had toyed with the idea of a Joker/Femshep/Kaidan threesome for a very long time and was finally encouraged to pen 'By All Means' by my darling @naromoreau instead of just thinking about it. It even got a prequel 'On One Condition' and has another sequel in the works

Thought of a great line: In my oneshot 'Of Witchers and Succubi' Eskel has an aside I'm really proud of and it had to make it in. "Maybe it was her own scars, or how gentle and loving she was to him, or how she made a point to kiss every scar on his body telling him he was beautiful and replacing all the bad memories with something good. What was once just a scar from a blade in his side became the place she gripped as she rode him into oblivion, and a deep gash from a nekker claw became a trail of fiery kisses to his pulse point."

Gift fic: I write a lot of gift fics because I do a lot of exchanges. But I used to just knock one out for a birthday or something. I it's a toss up between 'Beautiful Christmas' that I wrote for @starsandskies or 'Until the Stars Crumble' for @briarfox13.

I want this universe and those characters: Underworld meets Mass Effect in 'Claimed'. I've always wanted a vampire and a werewolf as soulmates and had a blast with this one using Femshep and Kaidan as my muses.

It came to me in a dream: This one hasn't been posted anywhere yet. I'm still fleshing it out. But it's two spies who are partners falling in love and there are powers and AIs and car chases and weapon drops. It will be a sci-fi action fic when it's done. :)

I don't even know: This one has snippets out in the universe but hasn't been fully posted anywhere yet. I use it as an outlet to get comfortable with certain words during a sex scene or practice dirty talk and literally just letting whatever is in my head out no matter how filthy. XD eventually it will become a thing just not yet.

Fixing fanon: Everyone sees Conrad Verner as a Shepard obsessed idiot, when in fact he's very smart...just overly zealous. So @naromoreau and I thought, what if we approached it differently (and it also had the prompt something you don't ship but here we are XD)? And thus 'It's a Match' and it's sequel 'Once More with Feeling' were born.

But what happens AFTER canon: After dealing with the devil and stopping it, I wanted a soft moment between Asra and MC in 'Two Halves of a Whole'. I do want to go back and revisit these two with shared sensations because they share a heart.

If no one else will write it I will: Timothy Olmundson can sing and by extension so can Aric Jorgan. I always saw posts about it but no one ever followed through so I did in 'Love Song for No One'

Just to see if I could: i'm not a long-fic kind of person. I want the kisses and the smut, and I want them immediately. So my game spanning, full dialogue run-though of Mass Effect: Curious was to see if i could stick it out. It's been slow going, but I haven't quit yet because I wanted to expand on the little moments between Shepard and Kaidan.

Yeah like (ok this is gonna sound obnoxious I am sorry in advance), when people have a lot of money $16,000 isn’t a hardship. They’re paying for the service and discretion more than anything. I grew up in a very, very wealthy place (my family was not super wealthy but my friends mostly were) so I’ve been around people with deep pockets and so when I see people (specifically Harry and Louis) going to Soho House and stuff I kind of roll my eyes. There are many, many members only clubs to join and everybody knows that Soho House is not private in actuality. It’s like we kind of say, when they want to be private they are. They do not go to places where they’re seen when they’re not working. Also agreed that The Carlyle isn’t private enough because of where it is but it’s the place I thought of first. Probably for a vacation they go somewhere they have an entire house to themselves, and you don’t book it on hotels.com lol. And then whatever services they need just come to them instead of being part of the hotel.

Yeah, totally agree. Harry goes to Soho House to be seen. When they actually want privacy, we have no idea where they are.

One of those questions that just pops into my head and I need to know if I’m the only one…!!

When my beloved Snape killed Dumbledore I was traumatized. How can my favorite character kill my second favorite character in my much obsessed-over Harry Potter??

Until the whole sequence was explained later, I felt robbed of Snape. I was left adrift because while it did fit the story arc, I felt robbed of my obsession-within-an-obsession: Snape. He went a bridge too far. We were going to have to break up! 😭

In this session of Asker’s Studio™️ (have a seat. just move the cat 🐈‍⬛) I want to know if there has ever been an action/incident in which your favorite character did something so heinous that you had to divorce them?! If so, were you able to get around it by re-writing, ie, fixing the scene with fic?

There have been endings that were fixed (so artistically done…) but when you look back at the demise of Padme, it makes me wonder how anyone can feel anything but revulsion for Vader/Anakin…but redemption being what it is, anything is possible - essentially with fic.

If there is more than one example (I hope that there is at least one example!) all the better!

You know what, I had to think about this ALL NIGHT to come up with one, but I finally got it. Snape would be an easy example, but I didn’t react the same way you did — I think, in 2004 or 2005, post-HBP, JKR gave an interview somewhere. She was asked if Snape was actually a bad guy and she gave some coy answer like “you’ll have to wait and see.” Well, obviously, if we have to wait and see, then he’s a good guy! So that interview soothed my fears 😆

The characters that actually got to me were all played by Robert Carlyle. I had a huge crush on him and I wanted all his character to be admirable! Not good, necessarily, but admirable: meaning, not cowardly, not whiny. I wanted them all to have an internal strength that I could respect, whether their morality aligned with mine or not. And for three important examples, the characters just…didn’t.

Those characters are Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold from Once Upon a Time, Nicholas Rush from Stargate Universe, and whatever the fuck his name is from 28 Weeks Later.

I especially loved Rush and Gold, and every time they back-slid into their selfish/cowardly ways, I was personally devastated 😆 miserable! I’d be wracking my brains to make their actions fit my view of the character … or I’d be cursing the writers. Gold had it worse imo. There was an internal consistency with his character for most of S1-3, and imo it disappeared or wobbled too much in the seasons after; it became harder and harder to make sense of Gold’s character arc, and damn near impossible to like him. I couldn’t see the traits I’d originally liked so much.

Rush was easier because he was slimy from the start … I just wanted him to become Less Slimy in a more uniform manner 😆 We got lots of competent moments from him — and lots of embarrassing incompetent moments too. He had a petty jealous streak that wasn’t likable. He struggled embarrassingly with physical tasks too, and his refusal to get in better shape seemed petulant, and like a form of denial. If you’re familiar with SGU, you’ll notice that I’m leaving out Rush’s most abysmal actions. The thing is, I love bad guys who do abysmal things. So long as they have a core of admirable traits: self-reliance, flexibility, competence, for example. It’s when that core is weak that I feel betrayed by characters.

To use Snape as an example, I see now that even if he WERE a total villain, his murder of Dumbledore and his loyalty to Voldemort wouldn’t bother me. It would be the way he bullies children. That’s always been the hardest part about Snape for me to stomach. I don’t know how to explain it! I guess it’s because I like the trope of the honorable enemy soldier — the honorable enemy soldier can do and believe a lot of heinous things, but he can’t be a coward, he can’t be whiny, he can’t bully young children. He has to have an honorable core, something that reminds you of your favorite allies, to contrast with the unforgivable beliefs and actions. If his core isn’t honorable, if it only reminds you of obnoxious bullies and self-serving cowards, then there’s nothing interesting about him — he’s just a rotten guy.

….and I never want a hot Robert Carlyle character to turn out to be a plain old rotten guy. Unless it’s Begbie 😆

ETA: oh, I forgot to answer the other part.

No, I’ve never really written a fix-it. I did write lots of fic for HP, OUAT, and SGU. But I wasn’t skilled enough to do a fix-it at the time. I mostly wrote crack oneshots and occasional humorous multichaps. For OUAT, I eventually expanded into hurt/comfort, but it was fairly OOC across the board.

Happy 57th Birthday Scottish actress Shirley Henderson.

Shirley was born 24th November 1965 in Forres, Moray, but grew up in Kincardine, Fife, she began performing young and at the age of 13 found herself singing in a boxing ring between bouts after winning a local singing competition going on to sing in the local working men’s clubs on Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons. Reading through a few interviews I found it interesting that her big days out as a youngster was going to the York Cafe in the town I live, Falkirk, the cafe is still there, but has been through a few changes in ownership since I came here 8 years ago.

Anyway back to the lass herself, after deciding upon acting as a career, she uprooted to London to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

After graduating in 1986 Henderson embarked upon a stage career that included spells at the National Theatre, the Royal Court, the Traverse, Hampstead, the Citizens, and the Whitehall Theatre.

I first remember her in Hamish Macbeth where she played Isobel Sutherland, who was head over heels in Robert Carlyle's character, though he didn’t know it, she bowed out in the penultimate episode.

There are very different roles that you might remember Shirley from, in my case she played Gail in the two Trainspotting films, if you need another reminder who she was, well remember Spud’s girlfriend and the incident with “dirty” bedding that he wanted to was and got into a tugging contest?

Other film fans will know Shirley as Moaning Myrtle in a couple of the Harry Potter films.  Romcom fans will know her for her role as Jude in Bridget Jones’s Diary  who is always in the ladies’ room crying about her boyfriend.

She has of course been in numerous other shows and films including Wish Me Luck, Casualty, The Bill, Rob Roy, Dr Who, Once Upon a Time in the Midlands, Happy Valley and she plays Lucille Hardy, wife of Oliver Hardy about the comedy duo, called Stan and Ollie. 

Shirley is a busy lassie, she has recently been in  Lovely Little Farm, on Apple TV,  The  2022 comedy mystery film See how they run, and the excellent Channel 5 drama The House Across the Street. 

Next up for oor Shirley is a new adaptation of Tom Jones, from the makers of Poldark, it is of course based on Henry Fielding's 1749 novel,  Dune: The Sisterhood as prequel to the original for HBO Max and a Brit-flic set in London,  The Trouble with Jessica is a comedy about the dissolving relationship of two couples.

Shirley has a great attitude and has said;

“ I never get the tall, blonde, glamorous roles because I'm not tall, blonde and glamorous. I'm more the wee, disturbing characters because of the way I look or sound.” And as a Scot;

“I like doom and gloom with a sense of humour. Maybe it's a Scottish thing, we like to undercut indulgence with a laugh.” And on fame;

“I like to be left alone,” she tells me at one point. “I’m happy to be anonymous and just to lead my own wee quiet life.”

As I imagined... I couldn't sleep last night. I don't think two hours of sleep are enough time for someone to be considered "rested". Any doctor would have something to say about that.

It's always been like this, ever since I was a child. Before a departure for any trip, I become excited as a squirrel on caffeine and sleep it's completely out of the question. Before any academic trip, before an Alliance exercise, before a new mission, even before Hyperion's departure from the Milky Way, I didn't sleep a wink. Dr. T'Perro had to give me a double dose of sedatives in order to put me into cryostasis.

And so, an hour before departure, I was ready, waiting for the spaceship to attrack at the dock, in my Initiative uniform and a simple backpack with the bare essentials (well, it's not like they let us bring many things on the Ark, but I always traveled light anyway). I started pacing back and forth to try and calm my frazzled nerves, but the only result I got was to unnecessarily feed my anxiety. I was alone with my thoughts for too long and the doubts returned to keep me company, pushing me to look for a way out, a way to transfer Pathfinder's authority to Cora, to remove this sword of Damocles from my consciousness.

She should have been here instead of me, she was dad's second in command, she was personally trained by him, you could almost say she was born for this. Hell! She spent more time with my father in the last years than I did in my entire life. It's clear as day that she's the daughter he always wanted and he's also much more than a mentor in her eyes. No use hiding it, you can see it in her face! When she nostalgically recounts the missions they went on together, her eyes sparkle with admiration, and her voice has already betrayed more than once the fact that she is more in mourning for his death than I will ever be.

Lost as I was in the swirling flow of my thoughts, I almost hit her with an energy-charged fist when she brushed against my shoulder to call out to me, causing me to wince. Luckily, she's a significantly more trained biotic than I am, which allowed her to dodge the blow with extreme ease and carelessness. I mumbled something trying to apologize, but she kept talking as if absolutely nothing had happened.

The ship was ready.

I didn't have much time to process this information, because in the meantime I had already felt it: a shiver that shakes your shoulders, the tingling of static electricity that begins to saturate the air making the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, and then that rumble that vibrates your eardrums, making your heart shake in your chest. Growing up on the Citadel allows you to admire every kind of ship ever built by a living being, and for someone the chaotic traffic of Council space could almost make them nauseous. But for me, admiring a spaceship, especially in the takeoff or the landing, is always a unique thrill.

And that's how she appeared in front of my eyes: the Tempest. - My ship. - A Pathfinder's ship.

She's smaller than a standard Alliance frigate, but that's what makes her perfect for the exploration and scouting missions we have to face in the new galaxy. On board she has everything we need for study and research: technical and scientific laboratories, a tactical room, a well-stocked infirmary, adequate accommodations and even a private cabin for me!

Welcoming us on the dock was a turian, Vetra Nyx, who introduced herself as a "Initiative wrangler, provisioner, gunner, and everything in between". So... a smuggler, basically, but this is hardly the time to be picky. - New galaxy, new rules, new lives. - Besides... It was mostly thanks to her that they were able to get the ship ready in no time. Well, thanks to her and the rest of the crew, who kept themselves ready to go at any moment, as soon as a Pathfinder arrived at the Nexus to begin its mission of space exploration.

In this case: me.

The ship was built to SAM's specifications, designed to respond directly to the commands of a Pathfinder and its supporting AI. That's why she's special. There were others, of course, but they were all destroyed when the Nexus collided with the Scourge. The only one remained is the Tempest - so, she's truly one of a kind!

The one who performed this little big miracle is Gil Brodie, our all-in-one mechanic, the chief engineer who keeps the Tempest and its ODSY engine in perfect shape. The one in charge of making her dance among the stars is the pilot Kallo Jackt, decidedly affable and very friendly for a salarian, even if he retains that hyperactive and touchy manner typical of his peers. At his side, on the bridge, is Suvi Anwar, the brilliant scientist who will be in charge of the research and discoveries that we will carry out on board the Tempest, in collaboration with the asari Dr. Lexi T'Perro, an expert in alien anatomy, who will take care of the health and welfare of the crew, and any other living being that crosses our path.

Dr. Harry Carlyle, initially assigned to the original Pathfinder team, should have left with us, but after the bad experience of Habitat 7 he preferred to stay ashore, like many others, too debilitated or shocked to continue further. Only Liam Kosta has joined us, and Cora Harper has remained at my side as my second-in-command, as she should have done with my father. I hope there will be no tensions between us, but so far she has shown amazing coolness and professionality. Two qualities that will serve me well as I face the unknown.

Everyone seems to have a predetermined place and function, like well-oiled cogs. The only one who continues to seem out of place is me, but it's useless to keep thinking about it.

By now the ship has sailed. There's no turning back.

Next stop: Habitat 1 - Eos.

“We need to talk,” Carlyle said. 

T’Perro looked up from her scans of Ryder. The room was empty save for the three of them. She nodded, seemingly knowing what he was about to say. 

“I can’t be her primary care doctor anymore.” The words fell out of his mouth in a lump. It lay at his feet like a dead thing. 

T'Perro looked at him, the implication was clear. Harry wouldn’t allow anyone else to take over Ryder’s care. T'Perro knew what happened, there was no need to gain security clearance for someone new. She knew all the sordid little details. And despite the differences between Ryder and T'Perro, Carlyle trusted her. 

He grimaced. The admission tasted sour. He had always prided himself on his logical and decisive decisions. But after two heart stopping events, it was like his world tilted to the side by half a degree and nothing was where they should be, but he couldn’t quite put a finger on what had gone wrong.

Favourite Story You Wrote: Honestly, I love them all to bits otherwise they wouldn’t exist. But probably The Shelved Works or for Mass Effect gotta be The good doctor (Sara Ryder/Harry Carlyle). I think I drafted it in 48 hours (its a 14.5k story) and what a fucking blast that was. 

Story You Were Nervous to Post: Anything smut? Ah, probably Pranks and Payback (Cullen/Inquisitor) because Quizzy walks in to the commander jerkin’ it and that is... aha... a very specific kink. 

How You Choose Your Titles: I don’t put too much into it. It is always the last thing I do and that probably most definitely shows. The Shelved Works of Varric Tethras is my favorite, the rest are just easy descriptions of the thrust of the story. And generally, the shorter the story the shorter the title. The Making of Carver Hawke is longer because so is the story. Distraction is one word because it is a hook-up (James Vega/Ashley Williams). Now that I look at a list of my works, I actually don’t hate my titles. Thanks, question!
