When it comes to JAG and the forever-expanding NCIS Universe that it begat, “It’s all connected” (if we may borrow a phrase from Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb).
A spinoff of JAG, the NCIS mothership on March 28 will crossover with its own latest offshoot, NCIS: Hawai’i, in back-to-back episodes that send Special Agents Nick Torres and Jessica Knight to the Aloha State (with a couple other NCIS cast members appearing if not going along for the ride).
NCIS: Hawai’i had its first quasi-crossover of sorts when an early episode of the freshman CBS drama revealed the role that none other than Leroy Jethro Gibbs played in nudging alone Jane Tennant’s own career as an NCIS Special Agent. But the official two-part crossover event will solidify NCIS: Hawai’i‘s place in the Extended JAG/NCIS Universe (JNCISU?).
On this special occasion, TVLine revisits many of the ways that JAG and NCIS characters have visited other CBS series (including one instance you might have forgotten about!), either in one-off or recurring guest spots, or in one- or two-way crossover events.
Which of these crossed streams/character team-ups do you most fondly recall?
JAG
NCIS‘ backdoor spinoff pilot came in the form of a JAG Season 8 two-parter, in which Special Agent Gibbs’ team investigated the murder of a lieutenant — and Commander Harmon “Harm” rabb Jr.’s possible role in it. In addition to Mark Harmon, future NCIS cast members Michael Weatherly, Pauley Perrette and David McCallum appeared in the planted pilot, as Tony, Abby and Ducky.
In the years since, JAG characters such as Harm, Lieutenant Colonel Sarah “Mac” MacKenzie, Lt. Bud Roberts and Rear Admiral A.J. Chegwidden have popped up on NCIS: Los Angeles and or NCIS.
Fun fact: NBC pretty famously bailed on JAG after one season, at which point CBS “saved” the military/legal drama and eventually spun it off into a 40-season (and counting?) NCIS franchise.
NCIS
In addition to the backdoor pilot episodes that eventually sired NCIS: Los Angeles (at the end of Season 6) and NCIS: New Orleans (near the end of Season 11), NCIS has received visits from JAG characters such as Lt. Bud Roberts (played by Patrick Labyorteaux, pictured), Rear Admiral A.J. Chegwidden (John M. Jackson) and Faith Coleman (Alicia Coppola).
Next up: NCIS Hawai’i Special Agent Jane Tennant (played by Vanessa Lachey) helps kick off NCIS‘ two-part crossover with its latest spinoff.
NCIS: LOS ANGELES
In addition to receiving early-on visits from NCIS‘ Abby, Tony (pictured) and Director Leon Vance, NCIS: LA in Season 3 had a two-way crossover with Hawaii Five-0‘s Danny Williams and Chin Ho Kelly (played by Scott Caan and Daniel Dae Kim), while Kensi went stag to Five-0 during its second season.
More recently, JAG leads David James Elliott and Catherine Bell reprised their roles as Harm and Mac for an arc at the end of LA’s 10th season, while John M. Jackson has thus far made a half dozen appearances as JAG‘s Chegwidden.
HAWAII FIVE-0
In addition to the aforementioned Season 2 visit from NCIS: LA‘s Kensi (who was enlisted by Joe White to review a video of John McGarrett with Governor Jameson and Wo Fat), Five-0 had a full-on two-way crossover with NCIS: Los Angeles the following season.
Five-0 also had a two-way crossover with Magnum P.I. (though neither Alex O’Loughlin nor Scott Caan were involved), and Daniel Dae Kim, Grace Park and Taylor Wily once guest-starred on MacGyver as Chin Ho, Kono and Kamekona.
MACGYVER
The Season 1 episode “Flashlight” saw Mac & Co. get an assist from Hawaii Five-0‘s Chin Ho Kelly and Kono Kalakaua, with Kamekona also putting in an appearance.
Also, after Five-0 had signed off, Jorge Garcia popped by MacGyver as conspiracy theorist Jerry Ortega, reuniting the actor with fellow Lost alum Henry Ian Cusick.
NCIS: NEW ORLEANS
NCIS: New Orleans during its seven-season run enjoyed visits from NCIS characters such as Ducky, former FBI agent Tobias Fornell (played by Joe Spano), CGIS Special Agent Abigail Borin (Diane Neal, pictured) and SECNAV Sarah Porter (Leslie Hope).
SCORPION
Early into Scorpion‘s freshman run, NCIS: Los Angeles front woman Linda Hunt guest-starred as Hetty Lange, who was recruited to help Walter’s team look the part as they went undercover to protect a priceless art exhibit.
MAGNUM P.I.
In addition to its two-way crossover with fellow island drama Hawaii Five-0 — which involved Meaghan Rath, Katrina Law, and Beulah Koale as Tani Rey, Quinn Liu and Junior Reigns — Magnum is no stranger to guest appearances by the likes of Kimee Balmilero as Dr. Noelani Cunha, Dennis Chun as Sgt. Duke Lukela, Taylor Wily’s Kamekona and Shawn Mokuahi Garnett’s Flippa.
(As for the issue of the Magnum, P.I. TV show’s theme song having once been sung by Five-0 characters, that was “explained” here.)
NCIS: HAWAI'I
In Part 1 of the two-way crossover — airing Monday, March 28 at 9/8c and titled “Starting Over” – NCIS’ Special Agent Nick Torres (played by Wilmer Valderrama) gets invited by NCIS Special Agent Jane Tennant (Vanessa Lachey) to come to Hawai’i, when she gets a lead on a witness from a case they worked on together.

As people might have noticed, I’m a sucker for crossovers. So I have a new idea: NCIS New Orleans and Hawaii 5-0, one of the reasons being that I can’t even come up with any prompts for it, no instant character matches in any ways, and I think the more unexpected ones are the cooler ones, and my heart bleeds for them!
One I can kind of see, is the leadership similarities between Pride and McGarrett. Steve said once that «it’s a benevolent dictatorship», but how many times do you actually see anyone in 5-0 question their own actions and turning towards Steve to get confirmation before taking action? This is very typical of Pride too; ‘I have the upper hand when it comes down to it, but I trust you all and want you to follow your instincts’

Today on random shit that no one but me is thinking about:
so!
we know Macgyver and Hawaii 5-0 exist in the same universe, because they've done a crossover episode
we also know that Hawaii 5-0 exists in the same universe as NCIS: Los Angeles, because there's been a few crossover episodes of those two shows
and obviously NCIS and all of its spinoffs are set in the same world
however!
there's a moment in one of the earlier seasons of NCIS (don't ask me which one, I can't remember which episode specifically it is) when, as part of a running joke of calling McGee "Mc[something other than his actual name]" Abby calls him "Macgyver"
which, obviously a reference to the 1985 tv series (I don't remember when this episode aired, but it was well before the reboot existed), except: by syllogism, we can conclude that NCIS and Macgyver (2016) take place in the same universe, meaning the writers of the various shows have unintentionally retroactively put NCIS in a world where the original Macgyver tv series does not exist for Abby to reference
conclusion? Abby (and the rest of the NCIS team) had, at some point, met Mac and the Phoenix team and he made enough of an impression for her to remember and reference him later
(also Desi Nguyen and Tammy Gregorio exist in the same world now which means they can be girlfriends and you can't stop me)

Crossover vs Non-crossover Pairing Breakdown for S.W.A.T. (2017)
To the best of my knowledge, this information is accurate as of 12 Feb 2021 with 204 listings on AO3.
No pairings were indicated on 41 out of 204 fics and often overlapped with Gen (20.09%). Technically, no pairings were indicated on an additional five, but the summaries stated or implied pairings: Chris/Street (2), Chris/Street [unrequited] and Chris/Kira/Ty (1), Luca/Deacon’s Sister (1) [canonical name unknown, Josie in the fic], Original Female Character/Unspecified SWAT Member (1). There are also three Character/Reader fics (Chris, Luca, and Street).
Excluding Crossovers
Polyships are entered on 10 fics in two varieties. Three characters in a triad: Chris/Kira/Ty (5). Three characters in a vee: Chris/Kira and Kira/Ty (7). (There is overlap with triad and vee usage on 2 fics.) This leaves the majority of forward slash pairings as two characters and without any OT3 or polyamory tags. Six involve gender unspecified original characters, which leaves a gender breakdown of 39/57 M/F (68.42%), 14/57 M/M (24.56%), and 4/57 F/F (7.01%). The most entered M/F pairing is Chris/Street (19/39 or 48.71%). There’s a tie for most entered M/M pairing with Hondo/Street and Luca/Street at 4/14 or 28.57% each. The most entered F/F pairing is Chris/OFC at 3 / 4 or 75%.
The most entered pairing indicated by an ampersand is Chris & Street at 19/84 (22.61%). Second place goes to Luca & Street at 15/84 (17.85%). Third place is tied between Hondo & Street and Street & Tan at 11/84 (13.09%) each. The fourth most entered pairing is Deacon & Street at 10/84 (11.90%). I would like to clarify that this does not combine similar tags together such listing out each teammate pairing (Street & Luca, Street & Tan, etc.) with a combined pairing like Street & 20 Squad.
Crossovers
Tbh, I’m not entirely sure what to do for these fics. There are 14 instances of otherwise canonical pairings that have anywhere from one additional show to nine additional shows listed. Of these, 10 are for the forward slash pairing Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson/Jessica Cortez. There are four pairings that focus on pairings from other shows and crossover into S.W.A.T., and due to Ryan Bergara and Shane Madej being cast in s3e16 (Gunpowder Treason) as Eric and Ira, there are 13 fics that crossover with Buzzfeed Unsolved and Watcher Entertainment that have forward slash pairings for Eric/Ira (8 of these also have forward slash pairings for Ryan/Shane tagged).
When it comes to a character from S.W.A.T. being paired with a character from another show, it’s a bit hard to tell the extent of differences in the crossover listings when they range from one additional show (9-1-1 (TV)) to ten additional shows being included. There are a whole bunch of ampersand pairings that involve Evan “Buck” Buckley from 9-1-1 (TV), but adding on additional characters in an ampersand list makes it a bit hard to compare to smaller ampersand lists.
I did find the inclusion of Criminal Minds to be interesting because Shemar Moore (the actor for Derek Morgan) was cast in S.W.A.T. as Hondo. There are 15 fics where Derek Morgan and Hondo are the same person or character, so the pairing Derek Morgan & Spencer Reid would more accurately have Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson | Derek Morgan in the first part of the pairing.
Non-Crossover List of Forward Slash Pairings:
* Christina “Chris” Alonso/James “Jim” Street (19)
* Chris/Kira/Ty (8)
* Kira (S.W.A.T.)/Ty (S.W.A.T.) (7)

Someone reblogged that crossover ask game thing from me. I went to ask them a question, and realized I didn’t know their fandoms, and it seems like the kind of game where it would be helpful to have a working knowledge of both. Then that made me realize that you guys probably don’t know what shows I’m familiar with, aside from what I sometimes reblog.
Now obviously I like some of these a lot more than others, and I’m not in any fandom apart from Rumbelle :) However, I have a working knowledge of all of these shows/movies ...
