"Stay Fighting Fit This Summer"
Brought to you by the Naval Recruitment Advisory Board.

Snap
Captain Beatty was a bit too clumsy on "beach patrol" that morning. The gig was up.

Carson looked over. Well, looks like we have a situation here, he thought. Might as well have some fun with this naval officer.

Captain Beatty stepped shyly from behind the surfboard as Carson walked over to retrieve it anyway.
"Mighty sunny afternoon out today, isn't it Officer... "
"Beatty. Captain Beatty" the man stammered.
"Tell me son. What is your regimen? I have a ship full of sailors that stay in fighting shape, but none of them, well..." He gestured at Carson.
Carson chuckled and played the old man's game. "I surf in the morning, then I surf at Noon, and if I'm lucky I surf at dinner time too."

Captain Beatty, flustered by the obvious small talk dusted off his uniform. "Well I'll be sure to, ah, let our staff know."
Setting his board down and resting a reassuring hand on the nervous Captain's shoulder, Carson smiled again. "You know where to find me and when. Now if you allow me, I must get back to it."

General Reagan R. James joined the Commonwealth Minutemen in 2288. Within her first year of command, she drove recruitment efforts for both infantry and structural positions. Through this support, settlements grew steadily with sustained populations. Gen. James established core specialties in medicine, agriculture, and civil engineering; while also instituting an education system for the children of settlements. Her efforts greatly contributed to increased quality of life across the Commonwealth.

HMS Impregnable, where it all began for Tom Crean and for some, where it all ended.
Tom Crean’s is an epic story and its beginnings were born out of a need to better his fortunes at a time when there were no opportunities to do so in his homeland. Like Crean, many young boys took the same route and I want to impart one such example of a boy whose fortunes contrasted sharply with Tom Crean’s. It’s one I came upon when searching for information for the book and because he’s not a public figure his name would be lost on all but his descendants but he could be any one of a large number who suffered the same fate.
He joined the Navy just three weeks after Tom Crean in 1893 and both boys almost certainly knew one another as he was born in Ballynacourty close to Gortacurraun where Crean was born. This boy did actually join as a 15-year-old, being born a year later than Tom Crean in 1878 - you’ll notice here another opportunity for me to put to bed the myth that 15-year-olds couldn’t join the Navy - they could and had no need to lie.
Both boys trained together aboard HMS Impregnable at a time when the passing on of infections was easier under the right conditions. Those conditions were perfect aboard HMS Impregnable where 1600 boys slept in overcrowded conditions on the lower decks without sunlight and where their surroundings were damp, cold and dark - it was an ideal place for diseases such as Phthisis to thrive.
More commonly known today as Tuberculosis, he contracted it during a period when the harsh training enlisted boys were subject to, came with the added threat of corporal punishment for the slightest misdemeanour. Their ‘crime' could be anything from a having loose bootlaces, leaving a kitbag in the wrong place or something just as trivial.
Tom Crean and his friend from Ballynacourty would, likely have suffered for their petty misdemeanours by being held down over a short wooden platform while the Master-at-Arms, lashed their backsides 12 times with a cane - carried out as a spectacle witnessed by the ship’s company on the upper deck.
If you had the right constitution you could see it out - Tom Crean did, but for boys such as Tom’s friend the harsh training came at a time when his immune system was already under attack. On his naval record his character was noted as being 'Very Good’ but it was a very short record of just 10 months duration after which he was invalided from the Navy.
He would return home to Kerry and would spend the next two years of his short life suffering in a bed before finally succumbing to the disease he’d developed three years earlier when travelling in hope of a better life.
The fate of his friend really saddened me after learning what happened but it must have weighed particularly heavy on the mind of Tom Crean and his record reflects his disillusionment in the pre-Antarctic days of his career. It’s likely he considered desertion but fate would though, play a better card for him when he travelled aboard HMS Ringarooma to New Zealand in 1901. It was there he found his calling as Antarctica beckoned.
Pictured here is HMS Impregnable, where it all began for Tom Crean and for some, where it all ended.

I’m like 90% certain that mav and ice listened to In The Navy by the Village People once, only heard “Where can you find pleasure” and said okay bet
Masterlist
#the fact that the village people were created by a gay man to make music for the gays#and the navy used their song for official recruitment campaigns#while actively spending millions to boot out queer ppl in service is too funny to me#talking about i can always tell when someone/somethings gay#sure jan#also the song remains the most successful recruitment campaign for the navy to this day#top gun#top gun 1986#top gun headcanons#pete maverick mitchell#tom iceman kazansky#icemav

COMPACFLT, ma’am, you’ve absolutely wrecked me with: “My father—my father was kind”. I can’t even tell you exactly why, but that just struck right in the chest with the force of a sledgehammer, gosh. If it’s alright with you, could you please share your headcanons about Ice and Mav’s fathers? I know I’m, like, quoting your own work back to you but I can’t help it: “Well, dead pilot dads, that’s one thing we have in common.” —But do they? Or is one dead pilot dad vastly different from the other?
ice’s dad (Thomas kazansky sr.): asshole army major OH-6 and UH-1 pilot who got shot down over Vietnam in 1967. son of far-eastern-european immigrants. anti-commie. wanted ice to ALSO be a chopper pilot in the army, so ice went navy instead. daredevil dipshit who died & left ice’s mom alone with two young kids & whose death encouraged ice away from breaking the rules or being unsafe (esp. in the air). not necessarily a great person or a great father but died when ice was 8 so also not a huge influence on his life (i know val kilmer has said ice’s father was a big influence… I’ve written elsewhere about why i personally shifted ice’s narrative away from daddy issues and more towards Navy authority in general issues, in light of ice’s character and rank in tgm. GOD i need a master post sorry, but i think you can find it if you search “edts notes” on my blog and scroll for a while). ice’s LACK of a father -> no man to model himself on -> overcompensating & not getting it exactly right (doesn’t know how to talk to other men) -> maverick immediately clocks him as gay -> the plot of my fic.
Maverick’s dad (peter “duke” mitchell sr.): a genuinely awesome person. funny & kind, warm & loving, a truly good father & a great fighter pilot. big american patriot. Comes from a long long line of us navy personnel—maverick has the navy family name & the pedigree ice, as a second generation american, does not. Im still not sure who raised maverick—it’s one of those things I don’t have a strong opinion on, so it could go either way (i posited in the airplane one-shot that he was raised by relatives, aunt & uncle, but I know it’s a popular hc here that he was a foster kid—all equally plausible to me) but I do think he grew up exceedingly bitter, hearing about how great his dad was and how there was just no way! his dad could’ve failed the Navy the way he supposedly did, because he was just such a good person… there’s a real bitterness about original maverick that TGM maverick kind of lost. His bitterness only shows during the “it’s not the plane it’s the pilot” “EXACTLY” exchange (incidentally the scene that gave me the idea that Bradley thinks mav pulled his papers bc he’s openly gay…it’s the pilot not the plane, ouch). but i still think maverick is like deeply deeply bitter about how the navy handled his fathers death, which is what the excerpt i posted on wednesday is actually about—he confesses to ice how disillusioned he has been with the navy as an institution since he found out the truth about his father’s heroism. I know i just just just said that Maverick’s patriotic conservatism is his reason for existence in the meta “why we make mil propaganda movies” sense, and i stand by that, but i think on a human character level there probably has to be a little bit of deep-seated resentment towards the Navy for smearing his father’s good name and his own good name in the process. My maverick grew up a good Christian kid, called himself peter jr. after his good guy father, who never broke ANY rules until he was radicalized by not getting into the academy (“punish the son for the sins of his father”) and basically lost his mind for 30+ years. “If my family name automatically makes me a sinner in the navy’s eyes, then I might as well sin anyway.”
#i really don’t like Maverick’s character in tgm#which has been dulled down and his original motivation forgotten (upset at not getting into the USNA)#for the sake of…. pulling his OWN son’s papers from the USNA???#to serve the mil propaganda movie aim of recruitment as ive written about elsewhere on this blog#i tried to rectify this in my fics but it also meant that my exTREMELY bitter maverick is at odds with#the gentle soft-spoken slightly neutered maverick TGM actually presents us with#🤷🏽♀️ imo the bigger narrative evil is making maverick pull Bradley’s papers (punish the son for the sins of his father) so that was my main#fix-it priority.#mav’s bitterness is a side-effect of Bradley’s papers getting pulled anyway#yes to some extent they all have daddy issues#but i think it’s more complicated than that#pete maverick mitchell#tom iceman kazansky#top gun#top gun maverick#bradley rooster bradshaw#and also yeah i know it’s cool to make ice like representative of navy lineage but#imo theres a reason they gave him a Russian name in the 1980s. like.. he’s the semi antagonist#It’s overt Cold War propaganda. he is Soviet-coded. hes meant to invoke anti-american sentiment.#so personally I shifted ice away from navy lineage… he’s from an immigrant family he has a lot to prove and a lot standing in his way#ive written about icemav & religion but if i haven’t made it clear: the Navy is their religion.

I just love how people put so many f-words in their 1930s boys in the boat fics🙄 and that it’s said so much in the HBO War series. Guess what guys? My great grandfather LIVED in that time AND he spent time in the Army Air Corps and he said (as told by my MOM who actually ASKED him this when he was still alive) that people did NOT throw the f-word around back then. In fact it was scarce even in the military, let alone society.
So there, Tom Hanks and all you lil fic writers. Your use of vulgarity in fics/series, is NOT cute nor makes you sound intelligent, but instead it makes your stories painfully inaccurate.
#accuse me of vague posting I don’t care but it is what it is#a HUGE pet peeve of mine is not only s******** people’s s******** but also using inaccurate words and slang#IT TAKES AWAY FROM YOUR STORY#it’s also… ya know… the definition of ignorant👀#ALSO ALSO!!! A REAL NAVY RECRUITER told me that they are not allowed to use vulgarity because it makes us look bad fo other countries#Abby rants#Abby hates vulgarity#vulgarity ruins an entire storyline
