Remembering ~ Rick James
Rick was an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer.
He began his musical career in his teen years. He was in various bands before entering the U.S. Navy Reserve to avoid being drafted into the Army, but missed his weekend training to play music.
In 1964 he deserted to Toronto, Canada, where he formed the rock band the Mynah Birds, who eventually signed a recording deal with Motown Records in 1966.
His career with the group halted after military authorities discovered his whereabouts and eventually convicted and sentenced him to a one-year prison term related to the desertion charges.
After being released, James moved to California, where he started a variety of rock and funk groups in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He released the hit singles 'Super Freak’ and “You and I” among others.
Born: James Ambrose Johnson Jr. in Buffalo, New York on February 1, 1948 ~ Died: August 6, 2004 in Los Angeles, California at the age of 56.

Good news, girl: we won the war! Better news: 100 years later the U.S. is more than happy to let you enlist!

To everyone who messaged, texted and called during the shootings yesterday
Thanks for looking out for me guys. I got calls from as far away as Kosovo and New Zealand to make sure I was alive and ok. Your concern means a lot to me. And it was amazing to see that our status as brothers in arms extends across the globe. Unfortunately the attacker was able to murder 4 marines here at the naval reserve center before police killed him. I don't think anyone should stand on the graves of those lost, however, during this time consider supporting the legislation that pops up offering to rearm service members on base. The loss of life yesterday was preventable; if it weren't for the laws and regulations that strip our opportunity to defend our lives.

As a teenager, my dad set fire to a naval reserve. Now he's retired from the Bureau of Land Management, and has been referenced on national policy.

Next year, the United States Naval Reserve celebrates its centennial anniversary. In honor of this hallmark date, we will be posting a variety of images and stories related to the history of the Naval Reserve. Our very own historian, Dr. David Winkler, will release a coffee table book late this year. Here is an early USNR propaganda/recruitment poster from the WWI era. (LOC Image: LC-USZC4-7796)
