Canadian oil and gas industry statistics
Canada is the fourth biggest oil-producing country in the world. The oil and gas industry over here is active in 12 of the 13 provinces and territories of the North American country. Offshore locations of Canada are included in this calculation as well! This includes entities that are related directly to the industry as well as the ones that are indirectly connected. Oil production has almost doubled in the country since 1980 and much of the credit in this case can be given to the discoveries of oil sands in northwestern Alberta.
The role Alberta plays in the oil industry of Canada
Alberta is often referred to as the Texas of the North and with some justification, it must be added as well. There can be no doubt that it is at the heart of the oil and gas industry of Canada. It was in 2020 that it lost its status as the biggest oil-producing province in the country to Saskatchewan. However, it is still home to the biggest oil sands deposits of crude bitumen in Canada and it is also the biggest producer of natural gas in Canada to date. It also has almost double the number of drilled wells compared to Saskatchewan.
This statistic should be enough to underline the dominance that Alberta enjoys in this particular context. The offshore oil and gas operations of India have been limited specifically to the east of the country. However, the government has recently approved a new production site in Bay du Nord and this is why it can be expected that offshore drilling will only increase in the years to come.
Contributions of oil to trading and GDP (gross domestic product)
Canada earns billions of dollars every year from oil sales. Before the pandemic hit producer sales value of oil sands for Canada had gone up to almost 70 billion Canadian dollars. However, this profit was hampered thanks to a drop in oil prices including Western Canadian Select. This slump is also noticeable when you look at the contribution of this industry towards the national GDP. However, the pandemic severely affected some other important sectors of Canadian economy such as hospitality and tourism, and this is why its contribution to the GDP ended up increasing.
By 2021, this share had gotten up even higher to 3% each for conventional oil production and oil sands. This increased the total contribution of this sector to the GDP to 6%.
It is expected that between 2022 and 2027 the oil and gas market in Canada will grow at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of at least 1.8%. It is commonly known that the industry had been affected negatively by the COVID outbreak and the restrictions that the governments in the provinces and territories had imposed to curb the same. In the first quarter of 2020, the oil production of Canada had gone down by almost 20% compared to its average for the corresponding period in 2019 but things are expected to look up again.

Characters below!
Main Characters
Edmonton | Edward Murphy Masterpost | Bio | Relationships | Trivia | Notes Begrudging capital of the province and self-proclaimed black sheep, Ed represents an eclectic mix of blue collar oil culture and government service. When heâs not trying to escape the gravitational pull of 1980âČs nostalgia for Gretzky and The Mall or snarking his way through question period at the legislature, Ed enjoys partying hard at festivals and long bike rides in the river valley.
Calgary | Calvin McCall Masterpost | Bio | Relationships | Trivia | Notes Largest city in the province and fourth nationally, Calvinâs youthful energy and optimism is tempered by a conservative streak and a preoccupation with being taken seriously as a major city at home and abroad. He is most famous for his annual Stampede celebrating the romantic wild west... contrary to his actual upbringing in the mild west!
Red Deer | Elaine Hartley Bio | Relationships | Trivia | Notes The city halfway between the provincial powerhouses, Red is either fuelling up vehicles, people, or both at once in Gasoline Alley. Maybe if people stuck around after emptying their bladders or filling their stomachs, theyâd discover she has more to offer than her delicious home cooking!
Lethbridge | Lilith Sheran Bio | Relationships | Trivia | Notes The former financial hub of the province and former American whisky fort, Lilith has transitioned from a gritty coal mining past to the laid back lifestyle of a university city. Although she is one of Canadaâs windiest cities, she rarely has a hair out of place.
Fort McMurray | Reginald âMacâ Buffalo Bio | Relationships | Trivia | Notes An isolated hamlet at the heart of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and the Athabasca tar sands, Mac is a tough, working class rig pig. Behind his massive pick up truck, corded muscles and defensive nature is a shy guy (and a big fluffy Newfoundland/husky mix dog, Patches). Â
Medicine Hat | Madeline Hargrave Bio | Relationships | Trivia | Notes A sleepy retirement community and overall ray of sunshine, Madeline usually takes a back seat in the provincial conversations and prefers to work on her own projects. Famously referred to as having âall hell for a basementâ, Madelineâs wealth in natural gas and electricity continues to light her way.

She is very proud of being a northern city with a surprising number of amenities and is more than happy to share with her neighbours.
Banff | Eleanor Crandell Bio | Relationships | Trivia | Notes An internationally famous mountain resort town, Eleanor is usually busy hosting and entertaining visitors from abroad (as well as Calvin every weekend). When not attending to guests, she is as down for skiing and wilderness hikes as she is for the buzzing shopping and nightlife scene.
Jasper | Jasper Swift Bio | Relationships | Trivia | Notes A former fur trading post turned heart of a national park, Jas tends to be a little more laid back than their counterpart in Banff but no less popular. A little quieter and wilder, Jasperâs claim to fame is their cozy cabin culture and annual Dark Sky festival.
Other Municipalities
Strathcona | Edith Garneau: Former municipality representing Edmontonâs south side and the University of Alberta campus, Edith is typically found inhaling copious amounts of cuisine on Whyte Ave or rehearsing for Fringe Fest when not plotting the downfall of the government.
Bowness | Caroline Cochrane: Former municipality representing Calgaryâs northwest, Caroline represents what used to be a popular recreational spot for day-tripping Calgarians during the early 20th century. These days, she is usually trying to organize community fundraisers with themes beyond âwesternâ.
---
St. Paul | Paula: Small town originally founded as a Metis settlement, Paulaâs current major attraction is the centennial UFO landing pad (with accompanying UFO Hotline, naturally.)
Vulcan | ? : Small town originally named for the Roman god of the forge, now capitalizing on their reputation as Star Trek Capital of Canada for obvious reasons.
Drumheller | ? : Small town in the Alberta badlands famous the world over for fantastic fossil finds, many of which are housed at the nearby Royal Tyrell Museum.
Cardston | Orson Card: Small town founded around one of the most northern locations of Mormon Temples in North America. Orson is a polite and sincere (if unsettlingly so) fellow who helped build southern Albertaâs irrigation system.
Sherwood Park | Marion Clover: A bedroom community east of Edmonton and one of the largest population centres in the province despite technically being a hamlet. Marion is a refined lady (pun intended) that supervises one of Western Canadaâs biggest industrial zones.

Alberta (Headcanon)
Alberta, or as more know her, âCanadian Texasâ.
Half the population of Québec, (4,601,314 in 2022 for 8,751,352 the same year for QC), she is the main producer of oil and natural gas of the country.
She became an official province September 1st, 1905, where before she was a part of the Northwest territory, the same time as Saskatchewan. Sheâs mostly known for her oil and cattle, so she got a good cowboy culture. As stated in my Ontario post, the west is mostly known for having more conservatory opinions, but nothing as radical as Texas/the south (Some people have those opinions, but theyâre not the majority, just the loud ones). She understand French, but absolutely refuse to speak it, mainly because of her rivalry with QuĂ©bec despite her French speaking population. Her government in charge is mostly the reason of it, alimenting the population with lies about the money spend/ etc. Note: Alberta isnât my Province, and I do not know many things about how it is managed, this is what I gathered.
As for body temperature, Alberta is dry hot in summer (20°C/68°F to 25°C/77°F but can reach the mid to upper 30s°C/90s°F) and can be really cold in winter (-5°C/23°F to -15°C/5°F and can be lower for short period of time: -30°C/-22°F to -40°C/-40°F). She mainly lives in Calgary, where thereâs more population and lives mainly on her ranch.
She got olive skin, black hair loosely braided and dark blues eyes, like her flag. She got cowboy boots, dark jeans, an Edmonton oilers shirt (she sometimes switch it for a Calgary flame), a green flannel and a cowboy hat. Sheâs a little taller (6â2) than Saskatchewan (6â1), whoâs is in perfect middle in the country by size, but she doesnât really care about her heigh (unlike Texas, whoâll, of course, brag that heâs bigger than her, and sheâll just shrug it with a passive-aggressive answer, probably something about how at least she doesnât let her kids be killed for guns/liberty). Sheâs bigger than California, just so you guys know.
Also, we have way less school shooting in the whole country (these shouldnât be happening, period!), and guns ownership is for hunting. In Alberta and the rest of the country, unlike in Texas, you need a license to own a gun, another one to specifically carry one, and you cannot conceal any gun on you, as it is against federal laws.
Here she is, probably listening to Saskatchewan sharing the latest results of curling and feeling a little disinterested. (The site didnât have Cowboy hat, so hereâs the alternative.)
As for the relationship with provinces/state, during WWII, the construction of Alaska Highway (which is crossing BC, Yukon and Alaska and formerly known as Alcan (contraction of Alaska/Canada) Highway) helped her to boost her economy, so sheâs grateful for it and do, in return, spend time hunting with Alaska when he wants to.
Her relationship with QuĂ©bec is kind of like⊠not Texas and California, thatâs too radical, but more like Ohio and Michigan, I think; from what I understand, the Albertan government is the reason why we âFrenchieâ are blamed for everything: weâre far away, they rarely visit, weâre trying to protect our culture (which, I understand, can be viewed as trying to separate ourselves from Canada/doesnât like the Canadian culture, but itâs not true; we just want to be able to lives our life speaking French and keeping our culture), and other factors. But from a few people talking about their experiences in both provinces, QuĂ©bec and Alberta are two side of the same coin. Which is probably true: Alberta wants people to speak English, QuĂ©bec wants them to speak French; AB want to export her oil, but QC doesnât want to risk her fauna/flora; AB sometimes feels like they do not get enough money from the feds compared to QC, the latter is the double of her population.
You see the two sides? So, for their relationship, when Alberta tries to wind QuĂ©bec up, QuĂ©bec doesnât care at all; sheâs older, and has been trying to protect her French culture years before Alberta was made, so unless Alberta is actively aggressive, she doesnât really retort/play her game. Theyâre more passive-aggressive than actively violent towards each other.
As for BC and Alberta, British Columbia is the chill state, a mix between Washington and California; so, sheâs not friendly with Alberta, and they donât get along most of the time, but if you insult the west? They will be the more bests of bests friends youâll ever see.
And for Yukon, they do get along, since the territory is often overlooked, like the other two.
Alberta consider Saskatchewan her sister, since they got the same âBirthdayâ (They`re the West Twins!), and are similar in some things (prairies provinces, too small in population to change things by themselves, kind of angry towards the feds, etc). Theyâre âpartner in crimesâ but Saskatchewan is more easy going than Alberta. Saskatchewan will call her out if sheâs letting the biased view of the right extremist affect her view of things.
Cana and she do not get along, but they stays respectful and professionals.
Thatâs all for now, donât hesitate to ask questions!
Masterpost here.

Singer-Songwriter Billie Zizi of Edmonton Shares Levitate LP featuring Earnest and Uplifting Rocker, âMidnight Sunâ
youtube
Singer-songwriter Billie Zizi of Edmonton, Alberta, is unveiling her long awaited new record, Levitate. The collection of dreamy songs, which range from earnest folk rock to eerie singer-songwriter, capture the artistâs experience of navigating life through her tight knit hometown community.
From the gas station love affairs of pitbull-walking, rhinestone adorned Edmontonians to the spiritual levity of transcendence, this album is a glimpse into my strange mind and the life Iâve lived. Loss, radiant love, transience, delirium and indefatigable hope are some of the themes. I dreamed this record into being over many years. It's a love letter to Edmonton, to delighting in the simple things like hot dogs and friendship and the prairie sky and the absurdity of it all. To all the Dirt City angels, the big dreamers, the lovers, and the dancers, this is for you: I hope you like it. â Billie Zizi
âMidnight Sunâ was born out of a writing prompt to reference a natural phenomenon. Zizi ran with the concept of the midnight sun, one where we are âsoaked in the luminous 24 hour sun,â and in turn, the âgardens of our love would proliferate wildly and we would be intoxicated by the honeyed light.â Yet inevitably, the winter would come and with it the love would wither and die. Co-produced with album collaborator Austin Parachoniak, âMidnight Sunâ has an inherent groove to it with an arrangement meant to translate perfectly to a live setting, gradually deepening in intensity and heart as Ziziâs vocals and guitar lines grow around each other.

The Bow, Calgary (No. 1)
The Bow is a 158,000-square-metre (1,700,000 sq ft) skyscraper in downtown Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The 236 metre (774 ft) building was the tallest in Calgary between July 8, 2010, when it surpassed the Suncor Energy Centre, and May 11, 2016, when it was exceeded by Brookfield Place. The Bow is currently the second tallest office tower in Calgary and the third tallest in Canada outside Toronto. The Bow is also considered the start of redevelopment in Calgary's Downtown East Village. It was completed in 2012 and was ranked among the top 10 architectural projects in the world of that year according to Azure magazine. It was built for oil and gas company Encana, and was the headquarters of its successors Ovintiv and Cenovus.
EnCana Corporation (now Ovintiv), North America's second largest natural gas producer, announced plans for the high-rise in 2006. Early designs suggested that the project would consist of a complex of towers (perhaps two or more) over two blocks. The initial proposal was for a tower of 300 m (980 ft), which would have made it the second tallest building in Canada. Early sources suggested a two tower complex spanning the entire surface of two blocks, with a second tower of 40 to 50 stories connected at sixth stories level over 6 Avenue. Official statements declared that the tower will be 58 stories, or 247 metres (810 ft) tall.
The management company in charge of the project was Texas-based Matthews Southwest, with architectural services furnished by UK-based Foster + Partners and Zeidler Partnership Architects of Calgary.

The Rise of Green Design in Calgary: A Focus on Sustainable Architecture
In recent years, the city of Calgary has emerged as a leader in sustainable design, with architects and designers increasingly focusing on green building practices to address environmental challenges. Green design, also known as sustainable architecture, incorporates eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient technologies, and nature-inspired designs to create spaces that minimize their environmental impact. The architecture community in Calgary, driven by local regulations, client demand, and a growing awareness of climate change, is taking bold steps to make sustainable architecture the norm.
Calgaryâs Unique Approach to Green Architecture
Calgaryâs geographic location presents a distinct set of challenges and opportunities when it comes to green design architect calgary. With a cold climate for much of the year, energy efficiency is paramount, and architects have become innovative in how they address heating, insulation, and energy conservation. Calgaryâs architects have embraced passive solar design, which maximizes the use of sunlight for natural heating. They also focus on the thermal performance of building materials to reduce the need for artificial heating during harsh winters.
Green roofs and walls, which incorporate living plants into the building design, are also becoming more common in Calgary. These features not only enhance the aesthetics of a building but also provide natural insulation, reduce stormwater runoff, and improve air quality. The use of recycled and locally-sourced materials is another essential aspect of sustainable building practices in the city, reducing the carbon footprint associated with transporting materials over long distances.
Energy Efficiency and Renewable Resources
One of the primary focuses of green design is to minimize a buildingâs energy consumption. Calgaryâs architects are increasingly incorporating energy-efficient lighting, HVAC systems, and appliances into their designs. Low-emissivity windows, solar panels, and energy-efficient insulation materials are now staples of green building practices. In fact, many buildings are designed with energy modeling software that helps architects predict and optimize the energy use of a structure throughout the year.
Renewable energy integration is also playing a significant role in shaping Calgaryâs green architecture landscape. Solar energy, in particular, has gained traction in the city, as advances in technology make it more affordable and efficient. Many new commercial and residential buildings are being equipped with solar panels to generate electricity and even heat water, reducing the reliance on fossil fuels.
LEED Certification and Green Standards
Calgaryâs push toward sustainable architecture is evident in the growing number of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified buildings. LEED certification is a globally recognized green building rating system that provides a framework for creating healthy, highly efficient, and cost-saving green buildings.
Architects in Calgary are increasingly designing structures that meet LEED standards, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency, and enhance the quality of life for building occupants.
Calgaryâs municipal government has been a strong advocate for commercial architect calgary, implementing policies that encourage sustainable building practices. Initiatives like the Green Building Policy and various rebate programs for energy-efficient home upgrades reflect the cityâs commitment to reducing its environmental impact. Additionally, Calgary has introduced new building codes that promote higher energy efficiency standards, pushing architects to innovate and integrate green design principles in every project.
Conclusion: A Sustainable Future for Calgary
The shift toward green design in Calgary is a response to the environmental challenges that face cities worldwide. As more architects embrace sustainable practices, Calgary is likely to see a growing number of innovative, eco-friendly buildings that set new standards for energy efficiency and environmental responsibility. With strong community support, government incentives, and technological advancements, Calgary is on track to become a hub for green architecture, shaping a more sustainable future for generations to come.

With interior design increasingly being driven by socially aware millennials and Gen Zers, purchasing bathtubs, vanity units and walk-in showers has become more environmentally aware than ever. While bulk buying biodegradable soap is important, so is making sure the spaces where these items reside have minimal negative environmental impacts as well.
Green architecture has introduced many innovations that improve our lives, from tiny house bathrooms to robotics designed to reduce water usage. But for those of us living in old and drafty houses and flats that weren't constructed with climate positivity in mind, what carbon offsets can we make when installing a new bathroom renovation calgary?
Sustainable plumbing fixtures
Materials like natural marble last for multiple lifetimes while solid surface materials like Corian(r) are low in volatile organic compounds while meeting multiple regulatory environmental standards. You should also invest in low-flow toilets which use up to 6 litres less water per flush compared with conventional toilets; additionally install an aerator in washbasin taps so as to save water usage.
Smart plumbing solutions
Home automation is becoming an increasingly popular method for reducing bathroom environmental impacts. And it's far more hygienic than simply cutting back on showering frequency or opting for composting toilets. From an app-based leak detector and shutoff to self-cleaning toilets that use less water or even solar-powered water heaters that harness energy from the sun - there are an ever-increasing variety of smart plumbing options to help increase sustainability within any bathroom renovations calgary.
Responsible Wood for Eco-Friendly Bathroom Cabinets
Selecting responsibly sourced wood will produce lower greenhouse gas emissions than manmade materials, and its carbon storage properties help combat climate change. Strawboard cabinets have also gained popularity as an eco-friendly alternative to medium density fibre (MDF) boards. There are now beautiful ones on the market should you want your eco-bathroom to feel luxurious!
Are ceramic tiles sustainable?
Clay ceramic bathroom tiles are one of the more eco-friendly choices when it comes to bathroom tiling; as natural products derived from earth itself, they're completely compostable upon breakdown. Stone is another great option because its production doesn't involve factory processes like clay ceramic does.
Recycling bathroom tiles is also possible; simply take care to carefully uninstall and sell any outdated ones or buy vintage tiles if you wish. A shabby chic Calgary bathroom renovations will look especially stunning with such eclectic pieces mixed in together.
Environmentally Friendly Tile Adhesives

Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program â Alberta PNP
The Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP) is basically a separate Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) allowing the province to duly offer nomination to aspirants on the basis of their specific expertise and skills to migrate and stay on its soils. The involved governing organization responsible for the nominee program, and the yearly immigration share required to positively address the provinceâs immigration specific requirements is the Alberta Ministry of Employment and Immigration.
The Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP) is an economic immigration program operated by the Government of Alberta with the Government of Canadaâs department of Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). It supports Albertaâs economic growth by attracting and retaining work-ready immigrants to the province.
People nominated by the Government of Alberta along with their partner/common-law partner and dependent kids can present a petition for Canadian Permanent Resident (PR), via the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), as a Provincial Nominee under the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP). The CIC makes the final decisions on every Provincial Nominee permanent resident petitions.
Through the latest accord, the applicants satisfying the federal admissibility needs are provided with Alberta Provincial Nomination Certificate, and this improves the processing pace of their petition.
Via the latest PNP agreement, there is not-any longer an upper-limit on the immigrantsâ number that can be given nomination for Permanent Residency (PR) in the province annually. There is also no date of expiry. The Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP) will continue pending further notice, with the province offering goals for the (CIC) to duly fit in its annual planning for immigration levels.

Bill G looks after Viking V after its return from Bonneville (Dr. Seal's '66 Vette is on the right in the background.)
Viking V Makes History on Natural Gas Fuel
Résumé, Winter, 1982
The pace is swift at Westernâs Vehicle Research Institute (VRI). Westernâs experimental car, Viking V, recently became the nationâs first automobile to travel 145 mph in a measured mile on compressed natural gas fuel. That natural gas fuel is basically the same product many residents use to heat their homes each winter. And Viking Vâs speed, although impressive, rates behind a number of other VRI priorities.
Westernâs students and technicians were out to prove a simple point when they traveled last month to Utahâs Bonneville Salt Flats for the annual Speed Week competition. âThe main goal of our tests,ââ said VRI technician Bill Green, âwas to show that compressed natural gas Is an excellent high performance fuel as well as an economy fuel. We think we made our point.â
Westernâs Viking cars have made national headlines in recent years by obtaining up to 94 miles per gallon in cross-country rallies. In those competitions with other colleges and engineering firms, the cars used slightly modified engines running on gasoline or diesel fuels.
Now, under the sponsorship and funding of a Calgary firm, CNG Fuel Systems, VRI director Michael Seal and his crew have designed and developed a carburetor that some day could have service station attendants responding to requests to âFill âer up with natural.â
During the Utah tests. Viking V was fitted with a 1500cc turbocharged Subaru engine converted to run on natural gas. Modifications increased the engineâs former gasoline power rating of 70 horsepower to 150 horsepower on natural gas.
âWe took advantage of the fact that natural gas has 130 octane, as opposed to conventional gasoline with octane ratings of between 87 and 94,â Green said.
âThe car reached a top speed of 145 mph in a measured mile course,â he added. âAs far as we know, that is the fastest any vehicle classified as a passenger car has ever gone on compressed natural gas.â
Green said the fuel tank used by the Viking V team was a surplus unit from the U.S. Space Shuttle program. The tank, which weighs only 29 pounds. Is made out of aluminum and wrapped with a super strong synthetic material. He said an equivalent sized steel tank, normally used in gasoline powered cars, weighs nearly 100 pounds.
Now back in Bellingham, the VRI teammates replaced Viking Vâs racing motor with a basic 1600cc Subaru engine, but retained the natural gas fuel and carburetion systems.
âWe learned a lot of things during our tests that will help us in the natural gas conversions of gasoline powered vehicles,â Green said.
He added that several Northwest firms have fitted their company cars with VRIâs natural gas system to provide the researchers with long-range performance data. It now costs about $1,500 to convert an American car to a natural gas fuel system.
But the natural gas equivalent to a gallon of gasoline currently costs only about 45 cents. At those prices. Green predicted. Westernâs natural gas-powered cars will continue their quests for fuel efficiency and economy.
