[IDs from alt, 1: natsuyuu fanart of nanase and yorishima passing on a street, yorishima looking back at her but not turning around, while nanase fully stops to say something to him with a smirk. 2: taki and matoba as young kids dangling their feet off a balcony overlooking a room full of exorcist artifacts, matoba clan motifs, and two obscured adults. taki, wide-eyed, says "hey, what are they looking at?" and matoba, bored, replies "you don't know?" 3: textless closeup of the kids]
BIRTHDAY GIFT FOR ME EXORCIST EXTRAVAGANZA <3 embarrassingly many months ago cal @coquelicoq asked me to draw nanase and yorishima hanging out or the kids hanging out. and both those ideas lit my brain so much on fire that i had to marinate and marinate and marinate on them and i still have ten thousand ideas im not sure what to do with but for NOW!!! fun compositional practice :3
nanase and yorishima are hard bc u cant put yorishima in a room. he refuses. their relationship is passing cryptic remarks every eight months when they cross paths in town and theyve kept it up for 40 years
and i have. preexisting thoughts about the matoba family being nosy about the taki family lol. i think maybe after taki granddad passes they express Polite Interest in some of their records which means meetings for baby taki to run around exorcist houses poking into everything she can find and pestering weird older kids there who are happy to give her Just enough info for her brain to go wild

crashes ur board meeting n drags u out by the collar but its fine bc youre the one always saying shit like "im looking for people i can use" ok lol. get used idiot
#just tracing like. the sequence of events that had to take place in order for this to come to pass#1. natori and his shiki are skulking around homura stalking ban. possibly it's just his shiki and natori is elsewhere.#either way 2. natsume shows up and natori learns about it either bc he witnesses it or a shiki comes to tell him#3. natori gets in his little richard scarry apple car (this is my mental image for some reason) & fucking. BOOKS IT to the matoba compound#4. goes inside. presumably matoba lackeys try to stop him bc their boss is in an important meeting but somehow he gets past them#(possibilities here are v fun to think about. maybe natori does this all the time and they're used to it. maybe he's never done it before#but they're all on orders to let natori in if he ever shows up. maybe natori convinces them he's supposed to be IN the meeting#which is great because it sounds like some important clan thing so what is he in the clan now??)#5. interrupts matoba's meeting like 'i need you' and matoba's like 'bye everyone whatever this is is more important'#6. they get in natori's comical apple car (again the apple car is not canon don't worry about it)#& natori drives like a bat out of hell back to homura. (SOURCE: matoba is so scarred he refuses natori's offer for a ride later)#i wonder what they talk about on the way there? because they don't talk about why natori is stalking ban until much later#so they must be busy talking about something else. but what??#that or they're both too distracted by all the near-death experiences from natori's crazed driving lol#natsume's book of friends#natsume yuujinchou#homura cats arc#horrible exorcists#my posts#sidenote i feel like that page at the end where both matoba and sensei refuse natori's offers of a ride is really funny because#sensei's reason is that it will take too long. but sensei did you know natori drives like a speed demon? think it thru...#also like. how long did it take him to decide to involve matoba? was that his backup plan all along?#also it's pretty lucky that he found matoba at all considering he could be anywhere...the matoba have like 15 houses...#he has matoba's schedule memorized lol#natori sparkling to the assorted clan members in the meeting: sorry ladies and gentlemen i just need to borrow this~#*throws matoba over his shoulder and fireman-carries him to the parking lot*

How is it that the animes of Mushishi and Natsume Yuujinchou that first aired in 2006 and 2008 respectively have better animation than some of the series today?
God I wish these series had any and/or affordable figures/plushies/non-acylic-stand merch. There might be some for Natsume, especially Nyanko-sensei cat-form plushies, but Mushishi is basically devoid of any representation. Makes sense since the last arc was animated back in like 2014, but it's such a beautiful series and I think Ginko deserves a figure.

an occupational hazard
[ ao3 / ff.net ]
In which Natori expresses a valid concern and Matoba keeps up appearances.
Why Matoba insists on pressing them through these torturous formalities, Natori cannot say.
The conversation, rather mundane small talk, leaves him feeling ill at ease and now even Matoba's expression verges on bored.
Not that he feels he can ever correctly gauge the other man's mood.
As he casts about for something more to say, he sees it.
The incident had been recounted to him by a friend (who had heard it from their cousin, whose colleague had heard of it from someone else and so on it goes with these kinds of stories). Horrific, really.
When he finishes:
"Oh, how interesting." Matoba does not sound the least bit interested.
"A rumor, maybe," he hesitantly amends, feeling a bit lame.
"Maybe," the other echoes. Then, "Would you like some more tea?"
Natori picks up the cup he hasn't touched in over an hour, drains it viciously.
"No, thank you."
Matoba eyes him, the beginning of a smile playing on his lips. Benevolence with a hint of teeth.
"Now, Natori-san, if you're really that worried..."
Not for the first time, Natori tries and fails to remember why he feels any sense of moral obligation around this man.
"Oh, just forget it."
A part of him is tempted to leave his payment behind, however illogical. He curses his luck. Why couldn't it have been Nanase? He'd have been out of here already instead of spending the better part of an hour trying to exchange niceties with Matoba Seiji.
Muttering a ‘thanks’ under his breath, he turns to leave.
-
"I do appreciate the concern," he calls, by all appearances a lazy afterthought, when Shuuichi is at the door. He gives a quick nod of acknowledgment, then he's gone. The door closes softly behind him.
Seiji counts the win.
Were Shuuichi's eyes really that bad? There could be something funny about this.
His fingers trace the hairline fractures and his nails catch where the shell had split completely. Ink and something thicker had seeped through the cracks for days without end. The ink remains as does the stain on the floor. No amount of scrubbing could lift it from the grain.
He should have the floor redone.
At his proximity, the remaining gears stutter with a slow tick tick tick. A strained, plastic whine grows louder as the lingering presence rises through the mechanism.
Pressing his palm flat against the surface, he answers the same as he always has.
Herein lies a bit of a puzzle. Were he a different sort of person, he might have asked his opinion. Papers and inks and all.
His shadow, cast long by the afternoon sun, swallows the stain up in the blink of an eye. Seiji rests his chin on his hand. If only it could be so easy.

Release
Summary: The Matobas occupy a certain position in the exorcist world. As such, all eyes are on them. It’s not particularly useful when they’re looking for a reason to tear him down. Spoilers for end of ch 104. (1.1K words) //  Read on AO3
Seiji preferred to focus on what he could control.
Bow case over his shoulder and quiver in hand, Seiji slipped away to a quiet corner of the Matoba estate to practice. The archery range was far from the main house and the guest buildings. It was a practical arrangement, safe and out of the way, and for Seiji it had the added benefit of being far from prying eyes.
The last day had certainly been eventful. His sister and mother had been arguing again. And his dear sister just had to storm off in a particularly theatrical way while the house was full of visitors.
Because of course. She may as well have set one of the outbuildings on fire for the way talk was flying.
The range, with its well worn targets and partially hidden by the gardens and old walls, was a good place to retreat for a while. Interest in the Matobas’ interpersonal family drama was sure to fade once the rumors found a new target.
Soon enough, Seiji reached the wooden shelter, and thankfully, he was alone. He leaned his bow case against one of the pillars and began the familiar work of setting up the range.
The practice grounds were free for anyone under the Matoba umbrella to use, but most chose not to. Archery wasn’t the most popular of methods nowadays and most exorcists brought into the fold held onto the techniques inherited from their original families, as if the secrecy would help propel them into success. As a result, the most frequent practitioners here tended to be the Matobas themselves. But even among him, his mother, and his sister, it was more Seiji’s range in practice.
After dragging the targets where he wanted and dropping the plain, unadorned practice arrows into the ground quiver, he was ready to put his bow together and begin practice.
The checking of the bow limbs and the string was in and of itself a sort of ritual. It was a chance to get out of his head and focus only on his equipment. In an exorcism, anything and everything could go wrong at any moment. Yokai were inherently unpredictable. Killing multitudes of people at their worst and inflicting annoying mischief at best. Both were flavors of chaos that had to be brought back under control. An exorcist had to start with mastery over self if they even hoped to bring yokai under their control.
Seiji knew a part of that was his tools. While working, one’s tools were an extension of the exorcist, after all. He had to be as familiar with them as he was his own limbs.
Satisfied that his bow was still in good shape, he fell into his usual stance. Practice was the next step in self-mastery, to be able to do exactly what he intended whenever he wanted. In the worst case scenario, a fraction of a second and muscle memory would be the difference between life and death.
He set his feet shoulders’ width apart, kept his grip relaxed but firm, and nocked an arrow. In one smooth motion he raised his bow and drew the string back until the arrow was at the edge of his mouth, the string just barely kissing the tip of his nose.
He put most of his focus on form for the first few shots as he warmed up, but that didn’t stop the bite of frustration when the shots were off. He told himself there was no point in getting upset. He cleared his thoughts of anything that wasn’t related to how to nock an arrow and send it into the target. When he ran out of arrows, he set the bow down on a nearby hanger and went to retrieve. He repeated the process, the target a little further back each time.
Nock, draw, release, retrieve.
Every time Seiji ran through the cycle, got a little better. He made minuscule changes to his posture that improved his control. He adjusted the offset of his aim to be a little more accurate. As it increasingly looked like he was going to be heir, he had to be the best.
Seiji stopped and rolled his shoulders before he started the next round. He was beginning to feel the ache in his arm, but there was still something he wanted to try before he was too tired.
He held his hands out and framed one of the targets with his fingers. He closed his left eye, then the right and the target jumped out of the frame of his hands. Someday, as head of the clan, he would have to be ready for that.
Seiji nocked and drew the bowstring back. Instead of aiming as he normally would, he looked down the arrow with his left eye. When he let go, the arrow didn’t even hit the target.
This time, he couldn’t help but let out a grumble of frustration and annoyance. This was why he was practicing now, he told himself. Disadvantages like this and the danger the head of the clan inherited were a necessary part of the tradeoff for the gain in power. A fact his sister didn’t appreciate.
Nock, draw, release.
This time, he did hit the target. Tangible progress. With enough practice, he would be just as accurate as he was with his right eye. Shooting this way wouldn’t have to be a weakness.
The exorcists under them liked to show, again and again, that any weakness on the Matobas part was an opportunity in their eyes. In their short-sighted ambitions, they envied the strength and influence they had. It was why they joined the clan in the first place.
Nock, draw, release.
Seiji wouldn’t try to stop the rumors and the talk from swirling. It was a waste of energy to try. Instead, he would prove any doubts they had about him wrong. Despite his behavior, it was hard to argue with results.
Besides, their superficial criticisms didn’t matter. They couldn’t see the big picture. Every generation, their numbers grew smaller. Every year, someone lost their sight. With each loss, the exorcists that remained and the regular people they protected were in more danger. He knew the reality the head of the clan had to face.
He wasn’t going to go into it unprepared.
Eventually, Seiji lost himself in the cycle. He forgot about the current round of family drama, he forgot about the everpresent whispers, he forgot about the dangers that only a few could see.
Nock, draw, release.
As Seiji was winding down, a familiar voice called his name. He lowered the bow and turned to see Nanase coming from the gardens. When she stopped, her expression was neutral and she didn’t comment on what he was up to.
“Your mother wants to talk to you.”
Seiji understood. He packed up his things as quickly as he could and followed Nanase back to the house.
When the time came to head the clan, no one would be able to say he wasn’t skilled, wasn’t strong, that he didn’t deserve it.
What he couldn't control, he would prepare for.

the untamed is leaving netflix and tencent just privated all of the youtube videos outside of the first three, forcing you to download their official app or go to viki
meanwhile my dubious but hq blu ray is staring at me like :3 from my shelf
piracy's best friend is bootlegged copies like you know what... sometimes i don't want to download everything by myself and then put it on a disk and then make a nice case for it... sometimes i want someone else to do that for me
like i'd pay money for that
