I really love Natsu-Mon: 20th Century Summer Kid so far. I really recommend it if you like the older Animal Crossing games, when the focus of the games was more about experiencing day-to-day life instead of customizing your world. Also if you're tired of every "cozy life-sim" actually being a labor simulator, this might be the game you're looking for. You just do whatever you want, and the game rewards you for what you choose to do, and I think that's so cool.

Today I'm presenting to you Natsu-Mon! This is the demo, specifically. If you saw that Millenium Kitchen was releasing a new game this year, this is the one. If you've never heard of Boku no Natsuyasumi, it's a series about relatively the same premise every single time. A boy's month in the Japanese countryside, as directed by the player's whims. There're a lot of culturally relevant themes at play in Boku, the most obvious theme (to me anyway) is the sense of yearning for a simpler life in the face of mass industrialization. Natsu-Mon takes place in 1999, placing it right in the sweet spot for talking about quite a lot of this, at least environmentally. I love the design and overall aesthetic of the town. There's a lot of decay and disrepair around the place, but there's so much vibrancy at the same time. The art style is lovely and while there's general Switch game issues afoot, the visual styling really helps to mitigate performance. I didn't play Shin-chan, couldn't tell you how much is carried over from there, but I suspect there's quite a bit of reused backend stuff. Given that Shin-chan released in 2021, anyway. There are some modern game trends present, including BoTW style climbing and stamina metres, BUT this is one of the few series where those actually make sense and work well enough that these feel justified. Lovely stuff all around.

#vid is too big for bumblr so i'm posting it unlisted on the chube#Natsu-Mon#It's honestly really refreshing to see a game w/ modern game mechanics that actually have them for a reason and not just for trend purposes#Boku is always good y'all know how it is#Youtube

I'm not used to playing a game with only one guide (and that's limited to the Steam achievements, which doesn't apply to the Switch version). There are 'walkthrough' videos where uploaders say something like 'I caught all the pigs' but it's a 2 hour long unedited video of them doing random things and occasionally finding the pigs. I had to search 『なつもん! 20世紀の夏休み』 ぶた to find the last pig lol. The Japanese wiki was pretty helpful for other stuff too but the tip for winning the top shooting gallery prizes isn't that helpful; it says to hit where it looks like it'll fall but the hime-sama statue sometimes doesn't budge no matter where I hit it. Oh well, it's cathartic to shoot acorns at her since she abandoned her ten year old for the summer.
