National Candy Cane Day

In 1844, a recipe for a straight peppermint candy stick, which was white with colored stripes, was published. However, some stories tell of all-white candy sticks in much earlier times. Folklore tells of the origin of the candy cane, yet no documented proof of its real beginning. Literature begins mentioning the #CandyCane in 1866, and it was first known to be mentioned in connection with Christmas in 1874. As early as 1882, candy canes have been hung on Christmas trees.

It is believed by many that the white of the candy cane represents the purity of Jesus.

The cane is like the staff used by the shepherds in caring for sheep. The color red is for God's love. The stripes remind us of Jesus' suffering.

The traditional flavor for candy canes are peppermint, however, it is also made in a variety of other flavors and colors.

Candy canes can also be used for toppings on desserts or as an extra in hot chocolate, yes, a candy cane hot chocolate stirrer!

It’s National Candy Cane Day! Legend has it that in 1670, the choirmaster at the Cologne Cathedral in Germany gave his young singers sugar sticks to keep them quiet during the long Living Creche ceremony. In honor of the shepherds featured in the story, he bent the candies into small shepherds’ crooks. The German tradition was continued in the US by a German-Swedish immigrant named August Imgard, who celebrated Christmas in Wooster, Ohio, by decorating a small blue spruce with paper ornaments and candy canes in 1847. The tradition began to spread, and around the turn of the century, red and white stripes and peppermint flavors became the norm.
