photography round 3 poll 5
[Painted house in Zalipie] by Bruno Barbey 1976:
submitted description: muted colors photo of a village house with a thatched roof. the wooden outside walls are painted in polish folk designs. on the left, there is an older woman in colorful clothes with her back to the camera. on the right there is a flock of geese
propaganda: i like how barbey's photos of poland are mostly in shades of grey even though the colors are clearly there. the decor on the wall and the woman's clothes and the geese's beaks are colorful!!!!! but you can almost mistake this for a black and white photo. magic. very nice retro vibe
about the author: Bruno Barbey was a french photographer who documented life in many poor or war-ridden areas of the world. There was an exhibition of his works earlier this year at the National Museum in Warsaw. his photos of 70s and 80s poland are a fascinating glance into the past, i really like how they show that even in (sometimes shocking) poverty there are moments of genuine joy and beauty. you can see more of them here and here
A man feeding swans in the snow by Marcin Ryczek, 2013:
propaganda: The composition is just so very striking, its simple in the idea but wow it works it. It looks almost unnatural in it.
propaganda: This was taken in Kraków. You can look up Ryczek's own perspective on it on his web site, where he likens it to the Yin Yang symbol. When I first saw it, I felt like it was two worlds spilling into each other, and therefore themselves falling apart in a way, and it felt chaotic to me. Beautiful composition.
about the artist: He has a studio: https://www.imagenationparis.com/marcinryczek

Hi! Here's some info about me and this blog.
Let's start with this disclaimer:
I'm Polish.
I have no Jewish roots. You can call me goyim, that's fine. That being said, I'm not trying to appropriate Jewish culture in any shape or form. I'm aware of the terrible role that some Polish people played during the Shoah and before it. I know about Jedwabne, Radziłów, Kielce and many other places where pogroms took place. I feel the utter shame for what some of my people did and I don't support any form of antisemitism. I'm proud of those who acted like every human should've and helped Jewish people. Many of them received the honorable Righteous Among the Nations title. I hope you won't judge me too harshly for other Polish people's actions/words. Not everyone in Poland is antisemitic. It's far from perfect here, but it's not as terrible as it seems.
❗The last thing I want to do is to offend Jewish people in any way. If I unknowingly do so, please tell me, so I can do better.
Why this blog?
My blog's name - jidysz, is basically a Polish transcription of the word yiddish.
For couple of years, I've been reading a lot of books about Jews in Poland, about Shoah, about Jewish culture. Some of them by Polish and some of them by Jewish authors. It made me grow very fond of everything Jewish. The thing that I think about daily and that hurts me a lot is the fact that there's not so many Jews left in Poland. I wish they were still here. I wish I could walk the streets besides them. I wish I could hear yiddish everywhere I go, as it used to be here before WWII.
To honor the wonderful people who have been living in my country for hundreds of years, I decided to learn yiddish.
I'm currently using Duolingo and resources available online.
I'm going to post about my learning progress, but not only that. I'm going to post about Jewish culture and history, mainly in relation to Poland. I will post about the traces of Jewish people that I find in my city (Kraków). We have a lot of cool Jewish places here like restaurants and museums, so you can also expect recommendations of where to go if you visit Kraków.
❗Important: I support Israel unapologetically.
So there are also going to be some posts about the current war.
If you know yiddish or are learning it, feel free to reach out! Actually everyone who wants to talk to me or ask about anything can do so. Just be kind.
Am Yisrael chai 🇮🇱
