Palestinians have historically cultivated the land, not just with olive trees, but also with figs, apricots, oranges, and dates. Yet, Zionist propaganda, though a concentrated effort to steal Palestinian land, has insisted on “making the desert bloom.” The desert has already been blooming and supporting its Indigenous population, as it has for thousands of years. Since the early twentieth century, Zionists have nevertheless co-opted the language of environmentalism and sustainability as a means of forcing the native Arab population off of the lands they covet. The Jewish National Fund (JNF), a self-described Zionist organization, has an explicit mission: to acquire land throughout Palestinian territories and plant trees—with “proud Jewish identity.” The JNF claims to have planted 240 million trees over 227,000 acres. This tree-planting crusade is detrimental to the land. Pine trees that constitute the colonist’s imaginary of a forest in Europe replace the native plant species and change the soil’s chemistry, such that agricultural crops cannot thrive. This further displaces Palestinians, as well as the nomadic Bedouin peoples, who rely on the land for grazing their cattle. Settlers want to extract from the “blooming desert.” In contrast, the Indigenous approach to land is one of mutual respect and nourishment: the land sustains life and culture, a culture that settler-colonialism wants to erase. To achieve this end, the Zionist occupation has used a variety of tactics to disrupt the Palestinian economy, including controlling water resources so that groves cannot be irrigated as needed, which is especially important now given the effects of the climate crisis. Additionally, the Zionists instituted a permit system that has prevented olive farmers from accessing their trees for all but a handful of days per year. This has made it difficult, if not impossible, to do necessary maintenance like pruning and weeding, greatly impacting the quality of the harvest. Most egregiously, the Zionists erected walls separating farmers from their groves, slicing up plots of land that have been in the same family for generations. Such measures have forced olive farmers to rely on olives of subpar quality. Because of the limited days that farmers are given to access their trees, they might be forced to pick the olives before peak ripeness, affecting the quality of the olive oil produced and therefore the prices that the oil will fetch. A 1994 New York Times article summarized the struggle succinctly: “The Palestinians planted tiny olive trees; the Israeli soldiers dug them up. The Palestinians lay down in the road to block a bulldozer; the Israelis carted them off to police vans.”

Riding the Wave of Ocean Heroes: Conservation & Sustainability
Hello lovelies ໒꒰ྀི´ ˘ ` ꒱ྀིა I hope you've been doing great since the last entry hehe. I just wanted to express my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you for your ongoing support and interaction with my weekly updates. This post will be my last (at least for a while). I really hope you've managed to pick up a thing or two from my blog. Thank you for being here, and I appreciate all of you (づ๑•ᴗ•๑)づ♡
Now, let's dive into something super cool today – marine conservation and how we can be kinder to our oceans.
Tumblr media
Did you know? Around half of the world's population lives within 100 kilometers of the coast. That's a lot of people living near the sea, right?
Coastal places by the sea are like gold mines for our planet. They help out the global economy, and they do some pretty amazing stuff, like storing carbon (which is great for the environment), protecting our shores, and providing us with yummy food (Mcleod et al. 2011; Barbier et al. 2011).
You see, more than 775 million people really rely on the sea and its coastal wonders (Selig et al. 2018). For example, fish is a big deal, giving about 3.2 billion people some of their protein. It's even more crucial in places where people are still developing their countries (FOA 2018). Plus, it's not just food; it's like a vitamin boost in your meal. And, tons of people make a living out of fishing and farming seafood, almost 57 million of them! (FOA 2018).
Now, when we talk about tropical spots near the sea, they're like treasure chests. There are amazing places like coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrasses that are teeming with life, and they help out our planet in so many ways. That's why a bunch of groups and campaigns are working hard to keep these places safe and sound.
Let's focus into how people in Malaysia are doing for a sec. Here are some rock stars doing their part to save these coastal wonders:
ICRI (International Coral Reef Initiative) Malaysia: These people are all about creating safe spaces in the sea for our underwater buddies to thrive. Right now, only 1.4% of Malaysia's waters are protected. They're on a mission to change that!
The Dugong & Seagrass Conservation Project: This one's all about saving dugongs (those adorable sea cows) and the seagrass they munch on in the Bay of Brunei, Lawas, Sarawak East Malaysia. It's a big deal because these seagrasses need some protection from overfishing and other stuff that could hurt them. The locals are getting in on the action too.
Tropical Research and Conservation Centre: These ocean heroes are based in the Celebes Sea, and they're all about saving sea turtles and fixing up coral reefs that got bashed up by fish bombing practices in Malaysia. They're on a mission to keep our underwater world vibrant and healthy.
So, there you have it! These incredible peeps are working hard to make sure our oceans stay awesome. It's all about taking big steps and little steps, but together, we can keep those secret underwater gardens thriving 🌊⋆。°்⋆
Tumblr media
Author's note: One of my all-time favorite YouTube channels recently released a new video that I believe is absolutely worth your time. His videos are like compelling stories paired with stunning cinematography. In this latest video, he highlights the alarming issue of the world's coral reefs deteriorating. It's crucial to shed light on real-world issues that are overlooked.

Book Review
The Texas - Israeli War: 1999 by Jake Saunders & Howard Waldrop
It’s 1999, seven years since they dropped the nuclear bombs and devastated the world with chemical and biological warfare. The human race has known nothing but warfare ever since. The world’s population is in decline, all except for the nation of Israel where it continues to grow beyond sustainable means. Israeli mercenaries hire themselves out to fight wars for the major countries. Some of those troops end up in the U.S.A. This is the situation in the misleadingly titled The Texas – Israeli War: 1999 by Jake Saunders and Howard Waldrop. It is a short novel with a provocative premise, but a shockingly ordinary plot.
Actually the premise is completely bonkers. It all starts when Ireland doses the British government with LSD, setting off a chain reaction. The U.K. then attacks China and South Africa with nuclear weapons, Russia and Canada step in to defend the British, and China launches chemical and biological attacks on both nations. The chemical agents used by China get carried by wind across the border into America and decimate all the vegetation, natural and agricultural. Meanwhile Texas secedes from the United States and kidnaps the American president while the dopey Vice President runs the country as a dictatorship. The CIA hire a team of Americans, Israeli mercenaries, and disgruntled Texan nationalists who want Texas to rejoin the Union. Their mission is to invade Texas and rescue the president from a prison fortress while America seizes Houston and the oil fields on the eastern coast with the aid of the Cuban navy attacking from the Gulf of Mexico the way America seized Normandy in World War II. I’m not sure how the Cubans got mixed up in all this. Certainly Fidel and Che wouldn’t be too happy about this, but that is the story as told by the two authors. In the real world, anyhow, by 1999 the Cuban military probably didn’t have enough force to attack anything bigger than a college campus. Rack this book up as another science-fiction prediction that never came true.
Aside from the post-apocalyptic premise and a few minor details like tanks that shoot lasers and cockroaches that grow to the size of small dogs, there isn’t much of anything that is otherwise science-fiction about this whole venture. The plot is an ordinary military combat operation story and would mostly be the same regardless of the setting and where it takes place.
But the characters are written with sufficient depth to humanize them and make them interesting and sympathetic. Sol is an aging military commander from Israel and he has made marriage and retirement plans with his hot military cohort Myra Kalan. Another commander named Brown is a war weary African – American segeant who wants all the combat to end so he can experience the peace that he has never known. The Texan Mistra accompanies the tank platoon because, being a former member of the fascistic militant group the Sons of the Alamo, he has an intimate knowledge of the fortress layout where they hold the president captive.
On a technical level, this book is quite good. Although the plot is pedestrian, the suspense and narrative tension are done effectively. The action scenes are fast-paced and exciting. The characters are realistic and easy to relate to. The pacing is good and in terms of descriptiveness, there is a lot of imagery and world-building that works quite well; it reminds me of the bleak and desolate landscapes of J.G. Ballard novels. The biggest problem is the overbearing arbitrariness of it all. Why are the Israelis cast as the mercenaries? Soldiers from just about any nation would have worked just as well. My guess is that one of the two authors is Jewish, but that wouldn’t account for much in terms of the story. The novel over all doesn’t appear to be commenting on anything specific. The troops are diverse and multi-ethnic which is good; there is even a strong female character in Myra Kalan. The catastrophic environmental destruction and hellacious nature of the war make sense for a novel written during the Cold War and the Vietnam War era, a time when environmentalism was taking root in American society. The oil companies are greedy and evil while the Texan nationalists are vicious and Nazi-like. The authors have a definite Liberal streak. But these are small details of the story, not the main point of it all. And the way that Cuba comes to fight on the side of the U.S. federation gets no explanation either. This novel just doesn’t have any definite meaning when it seems like some kind of statement should be there.
The Texas – Israeli War: 1999 is an interesting and well-written book, but it lacks something substantial to make it truly great. It is an interesting precursor to the post-apocalyptic movie and fiction trend of the 1980s; think of the Mad Max cycle of movies and all the imitations it spawned. If you want to read this for fun, than go for it. If you are looking for something meaningful, don’t bother.
And regarding the Israeli soldiers fighting in Texas, that leaves only one question in my mind: what would Kinky Friedman think of all this?

MyMaps Experience
This week I worked with MyMaps, a GoogleMaps based application that allows me to save/explore certain areas relevant to my studies. I worked alongside this tutorial for ease of learning and to speed things along so I didn’t have to go back and forth between the video and the test map. This map was centered around the main islands Hawaiian Archipelago (Hawai’i, Maui, Moloka’i, O'ahu, and Kaua’i) and focused on things like sustainable agriculture, ecotourism destinations, and nature preserves. For the purpose of this assignment, I chose one area of each category to showcase:
Sustainable Agriculture: Kualoa Ranch (Spoon and Fork Icon)
Ecotourism: Waimea Canyon State Park (Hiking Icon)
Nature Preserves: Volcanoes National Park (Volcano Icon)
Tumblr media
The user interface of My Maps is very friendly and simple. You won’t need any fancy coding or GIS skills to use it, which offers non-academic opportunities to people like writers who want to save certain locations for worldbuilding or reference purposes (which I certainly plan to do in the future). Back to the biodiversity side of things, MyMaps enables you to mark areas that are important to biodiversity for a myriad of reasons, whether that be preservation or education to the general public about biodiversity. Kualoa Ranch is an example of education, as it offers behind-the-scenes tours of how they grow their food in accordance with the ancient sustainable practices of the native Hawaiians. Volcanoes NP is a good example of preservation, as the park operates in accordance with the National Parks mission to “preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the national park system for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations” (About the National Park Service 2016).
When it comes to the individual locations selected, there are quite a few customization options available. You can select different icons (as mentioned above), but you can also color code them for things like different projects. I didn't do that for this assignment, but when I use this in the future for non-academic endeavors I can color code based on stories. Each location you pick has the option of adding images to the Infocard (shown below with Volcanoes NP). Once again, this has both biodiversity and writerly applications.
Tumblr media
When you zoom in on one particular area, you can outline the area with MyMaps. While I didn’t use this application, there is a way to import a data table into My Maps to get a more accurate outline of a desired location. This can be used for mapping vulnerable areas that are key to protecting biodiversity, such as Hanauma Bay (not shown on map) which serves as an important reserve for different species of fish and corals.
For finishing it all off, there are numerous options on the main card of the map. One of the most useful that I found was the “set to default view”. This enables me to preset where I want the map to open whenever I click on the Hawaiian Archipelago project, which saves me a lot of scrolling and dragging. Although I didn’t use any of the embedding options, it should be noted that much like a google doc or drive file, you have to enable sharing permissions in order to share it with others.
Tumblr media
That's all for this week! Happy mapping!

Human exploration on the lunar surface is no small feat. It requires technologists and innovators from all walks of life to tackle many challenges, including feet.
From designing astronaut boots, addressing hazardous Moon dust, and researching new ways to land on Mars, NASA is funding valuable research through M-STAR (Minority University Research and Education Project’s (MUREP) Space Technology Artemis Research). The M-STAR program provides opportunities for students and faculty at Minority Serving Institutions to participate in space technology development through capacity building and research grants. With more than $11.5 million awarded since 2020, M-STAR aims to ensure NASA isn’t leaving any potential solution behind.
Supportive boots are required for astronauts who will perform long duration Artemis missions on the Moon. With astronaut foot health in mind, students and faculty of North Dakota’s Candeska Cikana Community College in Fort Totten and the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks are designing a solution for extravehicular activity Moon boots. The project, called Mapi Hapa, proposes a 3D printed device that helps astronauts achieve the range of motion that takes place in the ankle when you draw your toe back towards the shin.
Candeska Cikana Community College is a tribal college that serves the Spirit Lake Nation, including the Dakota, Lakota, Sisseton, Wahpeton, and Yanktonai peoples.
Nicholas Bitner, an instructor at Candeska Cikana and graduate student at the University of North Dakota, notes the unique skills that tribal students possess. “Their perspective, which is unlike that of any other student body, thrives on building with their hands and taking time to make decisions.”
Bitner also attributes many opportunities and successes of their program to M-STAR and its partnership which exemplifies the dire importance of consistent funding.
“Given the relationships, we have been able to expand our capabilities and our lab, but it has also given us funding. We were able to hire all our students in the engineering department as lab technicians. So, they get paid to do the research that they are a part of, and not only do they have that psychological ownership, but they also have a good paying job that looks nice on their resumes.”
In addition to addressing astronaut foot health, M-STAR funding is helping develop solutions to combat lunar regolith, or Moon dust, which can damage landers, spacesuits, and human lungs, if inhaled.
With M-STAR, New Mexico State University in Las Cruces developed affordable, reliable lunar regolith simulants to help test lunar surface technologies. The team also designed testing facilities that mimic environmental conditions on the Moon.
New Mexico State has already started sharing their simulants, including with a fellow M-STAR awardee. An M-STAR project selected in 2023 from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in Princess Anne uses the simulants to help test their experience in smart agriculture to test applications for crop production on the Moon.
Douglas Cortez, associate professor in civil engineering at New Mexico State, believes different perspectives are essential to maximizing solutions.
“There are hundreds of people working at Minority Serving Institutions that are used to looking at the world in a completely different way,” said Cortez. “When they start looking at the same problem and parameters, they come up with very different solutions.”
As we look to sustainable presence on the Moon, NASA also has its sights set on Mars and M-STAR is helping develop technologies to inform crewed Martian exploration.
San Diego State University in California was awarded funding for research on Mars entry, descent, and landing technologies. The team aims to achieve optimal trajectory by developing onboard algorithms that guide vehicles to descent autonomously.
The M-STAR research opportunities have been invaluable to students like Chris Davami and his teammates working to develop improved methods to land on Mars.
“I would definitely not have been able to have these opportunities with NASA if it weren’t for M-STAR,” said Davami. “M-STAR helped pay for my education, which helped me save a lot in student loans. I probably wouldn’t be going to graduate school right now if I did not have this opportunity. This program enabled me to keep pursuing my research and continue doing what I love.”
Following his contributions to the M-STAR-funded project, Davami was awarded a NASA Space Technology Graduate Research Opportunity in 2023 on his work in autonomous end-to-end trajectory planning and guidance constrained entry and precision power decent.
Through efforts like M-STAR, NASA aims to seed the future workforce and prepare colleges and universities to win other NASA research opportunities. When it comes to the advancement of space technology, people of different backgrounds and skillsets are needed to achieve what was once known as impossible. Not only can the diversification of ideas spark fundamental innovations in space, but it can also help students apply these technological advancements to solving problems here on Earth.

What Happened on September 22 in Canadian History?
Canada’s rich history is marked by numerous pivotal events that have shaped its political, cultural, and social landscape. Some of these moments took place on September 22, a date that has witnessed significant treaties between the government and Indigenous peoples, influential visits from international figures, and the birth and death of key Canadian political leaders. These events reflect the diversity and complexity of Canadian history, from the country’s colonial past to its modern era. This article will explore what happened on September 22 in Canadian history, covering a range of milestones, each of which has contributed to shaping Canada as we know it today.
Tumblr media
What Happened on September 22 in Canadian History?
Treaty 4 Signed at Fort Qu’Appelle (1875)
On September 22, 1875, the signing of Treaty 4 at Fort Qu’Appelle, Saskatchewan, was a landmark event in Canadian history. This treaty was part of a series of numbered treaties that the Canadian government signed with various Indigenous nations throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Treaty 4 specifically involved the Cree, Saulteaux (Chippewa), and other First Nations who inhabited the areas that would later become southern Saskatchewan, parts of Manitoba, and parts of Alberta. The signing of the treaty was meant to facilitate European settlement in the region while providing Indigenous groups with certain rights and compensations in return for ceding large tracts of their land to the Canadian government.
The context of Treaty 4 is crucial to understanding its impact. At the time, Indigenous peoples were facing increasing pressure from European settlers, who sought land for agriculture and development. The Canadian government was keen to expand westward and secure the newly acquired lands of the Northwest Territories, which included present-day Saskatchewan. For Indigenous peoples, the treaty was seen as a way to ensure their survival amid the depletion of natural resources like the buffalo, which had traditionally sustained their economies and way of life.
However, the implementation of Treaty 4, like many other numbered treaties, was fraught with difficulties. Indigenous leaders often entered into the treaties with a different understanding of the agreements compared to the Canadian government, leading to long-term disputes over land rights, education, and healthcare provisions. While Treaty 4 guaranteed certain rights to Indigenous groups, such as the establishment of reserves and financial compensation, many of these promises were either delayed or inadequately fulfilled by the government. The legacy of Treaty 4 continues to be a topic of discussion and debate, particularly in the context of ongoing reconciliation efforts between Canada and Indigenous peoples.
Pope John Paul II Visits Fort Simpson (1987)
On September 22, 1987, Pope John Paul II made a historic visit to Fort Simpson, Northwest Territories, a remote community in Canada’s north. The visit was initially scheduled for 1984 as part of the Pope’s broader tour of Canada, but poor weather had forced him to cancel his plans to visit the region. However, the Pope made a promise to the Indigenous peoples of Fort Simpson that he would return, and in 1987, he fulfilled that promise. His visit to Fort Simpson held significant meaning for both the Catholic Church and Indigenous communities, as it marked a moment of spiritual dialogue and healing.
The Pope’s visit was part of his broader mission to engage with Indigenous populations around the world, and his message in Fort Simpson was one of reconciliation and respect for Indigenous cultures. At the time, Indigenous issues were becoming increasingly prominent in Canadian politics, with growing calls for the recognition of Indigenous rights and land claims. The Pope’s presence in Fort Simpson provided a platform for these issues to be addressed on an international stage, and his words resonated with many in attendance.
During the visit, Pope John Paul II celebrated mass and delivered a homily that emphasized the dignity of Indigenous peoples and the importance of their cultural and spiritual traditions. He acknowledged the historical injustices that had been inflicted upon Indigenous populations, particularly in the context of colonization and residential schools, many of which were run by the Catholic Church. The Pope’s visit to Fort Simpson, though brief, was seen as a step toward healing and reconciliation between the Church and Indigenous peoples in Canada. It also underscored the global attention being paid to the struggles of Indigenous communities in the late 20th century, an issue that continues to shape Canadian politics and society today.
Birth of John Diefenbaker (1895)
On September 22, 1895, John George Diefenbaker, Canada’s 13th prime minister, was born in Neustadt, Ontario. Diefenbaker would go on to have a profound impact on Canadian politics, serving as prime minister from 1957 to 1963. He was the first prime minister of Canada of neither French nor English descent, a distinction that set him apart in a country long dominated by leaders from these two cultural groups. Diefenbaker’s legacy is complex, but he is perhaps best remembered for his passionate defense of civil rights and his efforts to unite Canadians across cultural and regional divides.
Diefenbaker was a staunch advocate for the rights of the “average Canadian.” His government passed the Canadian Bill of Rights in 1960, a precursor to the later Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The Bill of Rights was the first federal law to protect Canadians’ fundamental freedoms, such as freedom of speech, religion, and assembly. Although the Bill of Rights was not as comprehensive as the later Charter, it represented an important step toward recognizing and protecting civil liberties in Canada.
Diefenbaker was also known for his support of Indigenous rights. His government extended the federal vote to Indigenous Canadians in 1960, allowing them to participate in federal elections without being required to give up their treaty status. This move was a significant step toward the recognition of Indigenous peoples as full citizens of Canada. However, Diefenbaker’s tenure as prime minister was not without its controversies. His handling of economic issues and his decision to cancel the Avro Arrow, a Canadian-developed supersonic jet, remain points of debate. Nonetheless, Diefenbaker’s contributions to civil rights and his vision of a united Canada continue to influence the country’s political landscape.
Death of John Turner (2020)
On September 22, 2020, Canada mourned the passing of John Turner, the 17th prime minister of Canada. Turner, a Liberal politician, served as prime minister for only 79 days in 1984, one of the shortest terms in Canadian history. Despite his brief tenure, Turner had a long and distinguished political career, holding various key cabinet positions throughout the 1960s and 1970s, including Minister of Justice and Minister of Finance.
Turner was widely respected for his intelligence, integrity, and dedication to public service. As Minister of Justice, he introduced landmark legislation, including reforms to the Criminal Code and the Official Languages Act, which strengthened bilingualism in Canada. Turner’s time as Minister of Finance saw him navigate the challenges of a fluctuating economy, and he was known for his pragmatic approach to fiscal policy.
Though his brief time as prime minister was marked by political challenges, including tensions within the Liberal Party and a difficult national election, Turner remained a respected figure in Canadian politics. His legacy as a champion of justice and bilingualism, as well as his long career in public service, continues to be recognized by Canadians.
Conclusion
Throughout Canadian history, September 22 has been a day of significant events, from the signing of critical treaties with Indigenous nations to the births and deaths of prominent political leaders. The events of this date highlight the complexity of Canada’s history, reflecting its colonial past, its evolving relationship with Indigenous peoples, and the contributions of its political figures. As Canadians continue to reflect on their history, these events serve as reminders of the ongoing processes of negotiation, reconciliation, and leadership that have shaped the nation’s identity over time.
