âI always play extreme charactersâ: Zawe Ashton on life after Fresh Meat
As Vod in the hit Channel 4 show she shocked even her own parents. Whatâs next for the actor-writer-director-producer?
The problem with interviewing someone you feel like you already know is how quickly it can go wrong. One minute youâre saying hello in the empty east London pub youâve agreed to meet in, spontaneously hugging each other. The next, youâre trying to order a glass of wine and Zawe Ashton is horrified, because itâs not even 5pm yet. She reckons we should have tea instead, so we do. And then she says, âOh God, I canât believe I wine-shamed you.â
It is then that I realise Ashton isnât actually Vod, the student she plays in the Channel 4 student sitcom Fresh Meat. Vod is a literature student who doesnât read books, preferring partying, shagging and paying her way by selling ecstasy. Ashton, 31, is a straight-A scholar, who spent all her childhood weekends training as an actor, and thus has been earning her own money, appearing on telly in The Demon Headmaster, Jackanory and Desmondâs, since the age of six. Unlike Vod, Ashton has also written a play thatâs being developed by the National Theatre; has a book deal for something that sounds like an autobiographical novel, âbut I canât talk about it. Well, not much. Well, I probably willâ; and has set up her own production company, Asylum Features, to release films that she writes and directs herself. She is, I have to concede, a bit busy for pubs.
What Ashton does have in common with Vod, however, is that they are both very funny, as becomes apparent when we discuss what itâs like being hailed as âone to watchâ and getting nominated for âbest newcomerâ awards when youâve already been working for 25 years. âThe single perspective shot, Stanley Kubrick, down the corridor,â she says, her mind racing ahead. âAww, thereâs a little girl down there! And then you get closer and she turns round and has the face ofâ â she puts on a scary voice â âa 200-year-old woman. That is my career right now, in a nutshell. Iâm actually at retirement age, internally.â She estimates that she might be due a breakdown. âOr a Macaulay Culkin moment where I just go generally off the rails. Or a Winona Ryder moment, shoplifting.â She thinks about Winona. âHow did that happen?â
We head to a quiet room upstairs, where Ashton sprawls across an armchair, all long arms and legs and funny voices, her mind scattering ideas like wildflowers. She recently got back from LA â she bought a plane ticket and left the same day â and found herself getting lured into the new age scene in Venice Beach and Topanga Canyon. âI know itâs the worst word ever,â she says, grimacing, âbut I really am transitioning.â Ashton has been to LA several times before, though she wonât say why (you get the feeling there might be various projects in various Hollywood pipelines she canât yet discuss). This time, she says, a conversation with a guru has left her believing she might be on the cusp of a whole new stage of her life.
Perhaps this transition will liberate her from the anxiety she describes as something of a constant in her life. She was not a carefree child, and even playing Vod, who can be so comically unaware, takes a great deal of awareness. At one point I ask her if it was a relief that the only real sex scenes sheâs ever had to do as Vod were more comic than sensual. âA relief?â she repeats, as if I have brought up something as unlikely as Antarctica or a hippopotamus. She is almost breathless. âThereâs never any relief! Relief is not a word that ever enters my mind, about anything.â
Does she never give herself a break? After all, plenty of people say they want to write a play, a film, a book, but hardly anyone wins the London Poetry Slam Championship in 2000, a Verity Bargate award nomination in 2007 for her debut play, Harmâs Way, or a Raindance film festival nomination in 2014 for best British short for Happy Toys, which she directed. âWell, I think I am like other people. Itâs just that I think Iâm going to get to the end and then give up. But wow, thank you for saying I finish things, because I really think I am such a scatty person.â
She credits Lena Dunham with showing sex on TV that is not actually sexy, and also with the inspiration for writing, directing and acting in her own shows. âAs a woman, you do have a sense that if you can do other things, then you should. If you feel, mmm, the roles are getting a littleâ â she raises a sardonic eyebrow â ârepetitive, and you know you can write, then you should write a different role. Itâs a quadruple indemnity mission. I plan on having a long career. I donât want to burn out. Itâs like, I have the shield, and I have the lightsaberâ â she is doing movie voices now â âthese are my weapons of choice! Hopefully, one of those will come to serve me in some way.â
Does she feel she owes it to the world to redress the balance? âWell, the world doesnât have to give a shit in any way. It just feels like a fulfilling and smart thing to do.â
Ashton grew up in Stoke Newington, north London, the eldest of three children, and has recently bought her own flat not far from there, living with her boyfriend, a film distributor, whom she prefers not to talk about. Her mother Victoria arrived in England in her teens from Uganda, where Ashtonâs grandfather, Paulo Muwanga, had briefly served as both president and prime minister. At a Christmas party, Victoria met her future husband Paul, a working-class cockney who was the first in his family to go to university (Cambridge). The couple both worked as schoolteachers, Victoria teaching design and technology, and Paul teaching English â though he later moved to Channel 4 to commission education programmes for teachers, so telly was always a presence in their house, as well as literature. The three children went to local state schools, and young Zawe was taken to Anna Scher improvisation classes merely to âburn off some energyâ. She instantly loved it. âIt is very odd to be a very tiny person and know what you want to do.â
Famously, the Anna Scher theatre has produced lots of big names including Kathy Burke and half the cast of EastEnders. But Ashton says it was precisely the unstarry nature of the place that shaped the artist she would become. âIt was a weekend drama class that cost ÂŁ2.50, and we werenât supposed to do commercials, we werenât allowed to use the words star or fame â they were banned. You had to say actor or success. You couldnât say, âI want to be a starâ because it was meaningless, just empty calories.â
Ashton recounts a story about a black boy being sent home from an audition, having been told that he could never be the Milky Bar kid. Scher, who did the teaching herself, dedicated an entire session to discussing with her pupils where the casting people had done wrong. âWe were armed with all of this amazing⊠activism, I suppose. Sheâs an amazing woman. You were always encouraged to know why you wanted to act. Politics is not something you think about as a kid, but I realise now that she was infusing us with a level of conscience. You had to be on time, you had to be present. The number of birthdays I missed. I just gave up every Friday night and Saturday afternoon for 14 years.â
It was a dedication that didnât make her popular with other children at school. Ashton was bullied, and eventually moved secondary school when the threats of beatings from other teenage girls, who knew she was taking days off to film for TV, became too much. At City and Islington College, she found better friends who shared her love of poetry. She took A-levels and applied to do drama at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Then came results day. âI got hurried by my teachers into an antechamber. They were like, âHave you opened your results yet?â I was like, âNo? Should I? Oh my God, Iâve got three As.â I was overwhelmed, because it had been a really tough year. My mum had been really ill with cancer. They all said, you have to take a year off to apply to Cambridge now. So there was this crossroads moment â you know, when you realise your life could go in two really different directions? But then the stupid, stupid girl â no, Iâm joking. Iâm really glad I did what I did.â
What she did was take a year off to look after her mum, and then went to Manchester Met anyway. The course was a bit of a disappointment, she says, the teachers intent on making Ashton less experimental, disparaging her idea to do things such as walk around the audience trailing a red ribbon behind her. (She pitched the same concept at a local experimental theatre a week later and it came second in a commissioning competition.) But she experienced student life, and the partying that she had missed while being such a focused child. She went to Manchester nightclubs and got into DJing, experiences that would prove valuable when she auditioned for Fresh Meat years later.
Written by Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain, the duo behind Peep Show, the show is set in the fictional Manchester Medlock University. Vod is a blunt, libidinous raver; tub-thumping and workshy, with a thudding estuary accent and directional hair. She shares a house with a mismatched group of students â Jack Whitehall, âwho makes me laugh so muchâ, plays the posh twit whose family money has bought the house. In one memorable scene she is made to read Salman Rushdieâs Midnightâs Children and tells the class the book makes her feel âlike Iâve got this pompous, fat, naked man sitting on my face, and heâs resting his big, overrated bollocks on my airwaysâ.
Ashton auditioned for the part about eight times, and saw so many other actors there, of every type and look, that she realised she could make Vod her own, that she wasnât being asked to play any kind of trope. I ask if there has been any negative response to the only black character in the group ending up as a drug dealer. âNEVER!! Oh my God, thatâs never something thatâs come up,â she says, clearly surprised by the question. âAnd I feel like, sheâs not even as extreme as a âdealerâ. Vod is someone who capitalises on situations, sometimes ones that are really misguided. It all goes really horribly wrong â I think Vodâs got a lot of obstacles this series. Iâm quite excited about watching it.â
She might well be watching it alone, however, or certainly without her dad, who isnât too keen on seeing her shows. She might have developed her sense of humour from her parents (âThey are my favourite comedy double actâ), as well as her love of language (âMy dad is such a brilliant writerâ), but he canât get used to seeing her on screen. He pretends her shows are radio plays, so he can keep his eyes closed. âActually, I told my dad he should watch the episode with Vod and her mum, and he said, âIâd love to.â Then he came in and I was right in the middle of saying the c-word. And he was like, âMight just go and put the kettle on again.â â
She recently played another challenging role in Not Safe For Work, a much bleaker Channel 4 comedy by playwright DC Moore, about the jilted generation of thirtysomethings whose job security has disappeared. Ashton plays Katherine, one of a group of civil servants whose jobs are relocated from London to Northampton following public sector cuts, and who has to maintain a steely professional exterior to hide the way she is falling apart inside. Other roles have included a small part in Doctor Who (for a moment, she was the bookiesâ first choice to become the first female Doctor), and the lead in Dreams Of A Life, Carol Morleyâs documentary film about Joyce Vincent, the woman whose remains were found on her sofa three years after her death, with the television still on.
âI just always play these really extreme characters â theyâve all come with parental guidance stickers on them. I did this Abi Morgan play at the Donmar just now and she said, âYou play a lot of outsiders, donât you?â And I was like, âOh my God, I do!ââ She looks surprised. âAnd she said, âOutsiders who donât need much male intervention.â âWell, yes, I do,â I said, like I knew that about myself.â
Other theatre work includes Othello at the Globe and Gone Too Far! at the Royal Court, which is the theatre where she took the young writersâ course and wrote her play For All The Women Who Thought They Were Mad, at 24. It was inspired by research into the way that psychiatric medication affects women, and the way that black women in particular are often over-medicated, so that their health deteriorates even further. âThere are stories of women in pretty powerful positions, in jobs, suddenly finding themselves in institutions, unrecognisable to themselves and their friends,â she says. âSo I just had to sit in the research and think about it, but there was a writing competition. The night before the deadline, I said to myself, you really owe it to yourself to deliver â just do it. So I sat down and wrote it in an actual fever, staying up for 24 hours.â
Next up is the Genet play The Maids, a double-hander with Emmy-winning American actor Uzo Aduba (best known as Crazy Eyes in Orange Is The New Black), opening in London next month. âItâs going to be really, really interesting to explore two characters who are essentially ready to burst from the beginning of the play.â
After that, perhaps she will have time for a quick personal collapse, though it seems unlikely. âI donât really have the luxury of having a breakdown,â Ashton says. âIâve just been working for a really, really long time.â And yet that 200-year-old woman in the corridor has got another century ahead of her, at least.

robin's opinions on sparks albums 1994-2009
this is part three !
Gratuitous Sax and Senseless Violins (1994): how could you not love this album. is there a person on earth who doesn't love it??
Bops: Of course I love When Do I Get To Sing My Way and When I Kiss You but aside from that I also <3 Now That I Own The BBC, National Crime Awareness Week, and Frankly, Scarlett/The Ghost of Liberace. That's like 9 songs... bonkers.
Flops: Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak No Evil... but ONLY because I never really seek it out. When I listen to it in the context of the album it's amazing. Also maybe She's an Anchorman.........? but that's just because I don't like it as much as the rest of them
Plagiarism (1997): to be fair I haven't listened to it that much so these are basically first impressions
Bops: Popularity, The Number One Song in Heaven ft Jimmy Somerville, and Amateur Hour ft Erasure are all certified fresh (I'm running out of ways to say that I liked something)
Flops: anything with Faith No More bc they make it too screamy. Also some of the 'remakes' just sound like the same song repackaged, which seems a little lazy imo, but maybe I just need to pay closer attention
Balls (2000) I like this one!!! A lot of people don't in the reviews I've seen!!!
Bops: The Angels (Sparks Alternative Version). It's so pretty it kind of makes me sad. Also Balls and More Than a Sex Machine
Flops: idk I like to listen to this one as a whole so it's weird picking out pieces of it that aren't as good. I used to be annoyed by how repetitive Bullet Train is, but I've moved past that
Li'l Beethoven (2002): I used to be a Li'l Beethoven HATER but I've also kind of gotten over that. It's a good album.
Bops: My Baby's Taking Me Home (duh), Suburban Homeboy, Ride 'Em Cowboy I suppose
Flops: Kakadu Kantata, Wunderbar (I'm annoyed by how often it gets stuck in my head, which may not be fair to Sparks)
Hello Young Lovers (2006): Around this album is where I start to get... skeptical maybe? I don't know what it is about 21st century Sparks but it takes me a while to get into their newer albums
Bops: Perfume, Baby, Baby, Can I Invade Your Country, Waterproof
Flops: There's No Such Thing As Aliens, We Are The Clash....... Metaphor sometimes (but it's really not that bad)
Exotic Creatures of the Deep (2008) I kind of forgot this one existed and now I've started listening to it a lot more
Bops: Intro?? weirdly??, I Can't Believe That You Would Fall for All the Crap in This Song, Let The Monkey Drive (or Lighten Up, Morrissey depending on the vibe of the day)
Flops: Photoshop (I just don't like this one, although there are bits of it that remind me of Hippopotamus which could be worth exploring). Most days I don't like Strange Animal but I think I'll get there
The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman: I have not listened to this one

What is Included in your 6 Days Gorilla & Chimpanzee Safari in Uganda?
The Queen Elizabeth National Park also known as Kazinga national park is located in southwest Uganda and is among the most frequently visited safari game reserves in Africa. Best known for the abundance of wildlife and striking landscapes, the trip to QE provides an authentic African safari.
This means that the Big Five animals which include lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, and rhinos are easily spotted on this Queen Elizabeth safari. It may be quite easy to find all these hard, QE has a healthy stock of these majestic African mammals. Other animals likely to be met at the park in addition to the Big Five include hippopotamus, chimpanzee, hyenas, antelopes, crocodiles, and over five hundred kinds of bird.
To increase the chances of witnessing wildlife, game drives in the open grassland and savanna region of the park are recommended. Wild at heart can also take a launch trip along the Kazinga Channel to see huge groups of hippos, giant Nile crocodiles, and the numerous species of wildlife coming for water. I am sure that you should always have your camera on!
6 Days Gorilla & Chimpanzee Safari in Uganda
Like the 6-day Queen Elizabeth safari Uganda, other adventures in the park offer a chance to track the worldâs endangered species, the mountain gorillas and the chimpanzees in the neighboring Kibale and Rwenzori forests. The observation of these awe inspiring primates in their natural environment remains the biggest selling point of many travelers visiting Africa. Taking a guided trekking trip takes you closer to their herds where you can watch them feeding, playing or even napping. This is something incredibly overwhelming.
6 Days Gorilla & chimpanzee safari in Uganda offers the most diverse and concentrated landscape and fauna features in Africa within a comparatively small area that includes open plains, lakes, forests, and volcanoes. A safari to this park is highly recommended if and when you are in Uganda and if you have a flair for the wild. The âno re-entryâ policy means you will literally have the time of your life and take away memories to last a lifetime!

What Animals You Might See on a Zambia Canoe Safari?
The Zambia canoe safari opens up an excellent opportunity to get up close to the real natural beauty of this country. It's when you glide silently through the waterways that you get to see most of the wildlife lined up along them. There is no intrusion by the canoe, as in game drives, yet one gets very close to nature. The following is a sneak peek into some of the interesting animals that may be seen during a canoe safari in Zambia.
1. Hippopotamuses
One of the most iconic animals you're likely to see is the hippopotamus. Substantial hippo populations reside in the rivers and lakes in Zambia, much the same as you will find around Zanzibar Island, Tanzania, and Ngorongoro Crater Tours. These huge creatures spend much of their day submerged in water to keep cool and protect their sensitive skin. Though they appear lumbering, hippos are agile in the water and quite territorial. You may see them lounging in the water from a canoe or coming out at dawn and dusk to feed.
2. Elephants
Elephants are a highlight for many safari visitors, and there was always a good chance to see them along the riverbanks. Large herds of elephants have been supported by varied ecosystems in Lower Zambezi National Park and South Luangwa National Park in Zambia, and Kruger National Park in South Africa. Such sights of these magnificent beasts might be possible during a canoe safari, either drinking from the river, bathing, or even foraging in the lush vegetation that lines the banks. Their presence certainly imbues one's safari experience with an amazing dimension.
3. Crocodiles
The Nile crocodile is one of Africa's most powerful predators and can be found in Zambia's waterways. The sneaky reptiles are normally seen basking on riverbanks or lurking just below the surface. The view of a crocodile cannot be compared to the ease with which hippos and elephants can be spotted, but an encounter with a crocodile is very exciting. You can have the opportunity to see them at a safe distance in their natural surroundings, observing the size and speed of these creatures.
4. Waterbuck and Reedbuck
Waterbuck and reedbuck generally inhabit the wetlands and riverine areas of Zambia. These antelope species take well to their aquatic environments; especially the waterbuck, which is a lover of grazing near water sources. You may spot them along any riverbank while they are feeding on the lush grass, or sometimes come to water for quenching.
5. Birdlife
Zambia is a birdwatcher's second home, and there's no better way to do this than by canoe safari. The peaceful surroundings on the river attract plenty of birds, from beautiful kingfishers and elegant herons to several eagles. Keep watch for the African Fish Eagle with its unmistakable call and wing span, and the stunning Malachite Kingfisher, sporting its iridescent plumage.
6. Buffalo
Other large and magnificent creatures one could come across during such a canoe safari are buffaloes. The animals occur at the water sources where they visit to quench their thirst and beat the heat. While buffaloes cannot be spotted from a canoe as frequently as most wildlife, sharp eyes may pick them grazing or resting along the banks of a river.
7. Smaller Mammals
Beyond the larger and more iconic species, you may very well get some of the smaller mammals like bushbuck and civet. These guys are much more elusive and require a bit of luck to be spotted, but they add to the rich tapestry of wildlife that you can experience on a canoe safari.

Today's Environment News Alert
â The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) in India has raised eyebrows with its latest decision to consider ex-post facto clearances for non-forest projects in the Aravallis. This move effectively opens the door for regularization of constructions previously deemed illegal on this ecologically sensitive land.
â District Level Forest Rights Committee has given forest clearances to six roads in Gummalakshmipuram and Kurupam mandals.
â Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath proposed to start helicopter services and the establishment of four-lane road connectivity to facilitate seamless transportation to eco-tourism destinations such as Dudhwa National Park, Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary, and Chuka of Pilibhit Tiger Reserve.
â Hailed as a legend with three world records to her name, Rajmata, an Asiatic lioness who died in 2020 in Amreli, has been given a befitting tribute by wildlife enthusiasts and residents of Krankach village in the district. Embarking on an African safari is an exhilarating experience, offering the chance to encounter some of the planet's most magnificent wildlife. Among the diverse fauna you can observe, the five largest land mammals stand out for their impressive size and unique characteristics. These giants not only captivate the imagination but also play crucial roles in their ecosystems. Hereâs a look at these remarkable creatures you might encounter on your safari adventures.
1. African Elephant
The African elephant is the largest land mammal on Earth, reaching heights of up to 13 feet and weighing as much as 12,000 pounds. These gentle giants are known for their intelligence, complex social structures, and remarkable memory. African elephants can be spotted in various habitats, including savannahs, forests, and deserts, making them a staple sight on any safari.
On your luxury holiday to Kenya, you can encounter these magnificent creatures in national parks such as Tsavo and Amboseli, where they often gather near water sources, especially during the dry season. Observing a herd of elephants interacting is a breathtaking experience, showcasing their nurturing behavior, particularly towards calves. Their iconic trunks, which serve multiple purposes from feeding to communication, add to the intrigue of these majestic animals.
2. White Rhinoceros
The white rhinoceros is the second-largest land mammal, weighing between 3,000 to 5,000 pounds and standing about 6 feet tall at the shoulder. Known for their broad mouths designed for grazing, these rhinos are primarily found in savannah and grassland habitats. While often associated with their more famous horn, the white rhinoâs gentle demeanor and social behavior are equally fascinating.
In regions like Namibia and South Africa, you can find white rhinos in reserves such as Etosha National Park or Kruger National Park. Their populations have been severely affected by poaching, making conservation efforts vital. On a Namibia safari, you may have the opportunity to visit sanctuaries dedicated to protecting these incredible animals, contributing to their preservation while experiencing the thrill of seeing them in their natural habitat.
3. African Hippopotamus
The hippopotamus is a massive semi-aquatic mammal, weighing between 3,000 to 8,000 pounds. These creatures are often seen lounging in rivers and lakes during the day, emerging at night to graze on grass. Despite their seemingly docile nature, hippos are among the most dangerous animals in Africa, known for their territorial behavior and aggressive tendencies.
On a safari in Uganda, particularly in places like Queen Elizabeth National Park, you can witness hippos in their natural environment. Boat safaris on the parkâs waterways offer an excellent vantage point to observe these animals as they frolic in the water and occasionally surface to breathe. Their unique vocalizations and social interactions provide a captivating insight into their behavior, making them a highlight of any wildlife tour.
4. Giraffe
The giraffe is the tallest land mammal, with males reaching heights of up to 18 feet. Their long necks and distinctive spotted coats make them one of the most recognizable animals on the African continent. Giraffes primarily inhabit savannahs and open woodlands, where they use their height to feed on leaves and buds from tall trees.
While on a luxury holiday to Kenya, you can encounter giraffes in places like Nairobi National Park or the Masai Mara. Observing a herd of giraffes gracefully moving across the plains is a sight to behold. Their unique social structure, where females often form groups with their young, adds to the charm of these gentle giants. The sight of giraffes browsing on acacia trees against the backdrop of a stunning African sunset is a memorable experience for any safari-goer.
5. African Buffalo
The African buffalo is another impressive large mammal, weighing between 1,000 to 2,000 pounds. Known for their robust build and strong herd instincts, these animals are often found in large groups, providing safety in numbers. Buffaloes inhabit a variety of ecosystems, including savannahs, grasslands, and forests.
On a Botswana tour package, you can witness the formidable African buffalo in areas such as the Okavango Delta. Their unpredictable nature and strong herd dynamics make them a fascinating subject for wildlife enthusiasts. Observing buffaloes interact within their herds, especially during calving season, provides valuable insights into their social structures and behaviors.
Encountering the five largest land mammals on an African safari offers an unforgettable experience that combines adventure with education. From the majestic African elephant to the elusive African buffalo, each species contributes uniquely to the rich tapestry of Africa's wildlife. Whether youâre on a luxury safari in Kenya, exploring the stunning landscapes of Namibia, or engaging in a safari in Uganda, the thrill of spotting these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat is an integral part of the safari experience.
