Government Schemes for agriculture in India
There are several government agriculture schemes in India aimed at supporting and promoting agriculture. Here are some of the major schemes:
Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN): This scheme provides direct income support to small and marginal farmers. Under PM-KISAN, eligible farmers receive Rs. 6,000 per year in three equal installments directly into their bank accounts.
Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY): It is a crop insurance scheme that provides financial protection to farmers against crop losses due to natural calamities, pests, and diseases. The premium rates are subsidized, making it affordable for farmers.
Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY): This scheme aims to support the development of agriculture and allied sectors by providing financial assistance to states. It funds various activities such as crop diversification, infrastructure development, post-harvest management, and research and development.
National Food Security Mission (NFSM): NFSM aims to increase the production of rice, wheat, and pulses to ensure food security. It promotes the adoption of improved technologies, seeds, and farming practices to enhance productivity and increase farmers' income.
Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY): This scheme promotes organic farming practices and supports farmers in adopting organic farming systems. Financial assistance is provided for training, certification, and the creation of infrastructure for organic farming.
Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana (PMKSY): PMKSY focuses on increasing water efficiency in agriculture. It aims to enhance irrigation infrastructure, promote precision irrigation, and improve water use efficiency on farms.
Soil Health Card Scheme: This scheme provides soil health cards to farmers, which contain information about the nutrient content and fertility status of their soil. It helps farmers make informed decisions regarding the application of fertilizers and soil amendments.
e-NAM (National Agriculture Market): e-NAM is an online platform that enables farmers to sell their produce directly to buyers across the country. It aims to create a unified national market for agricultural commodities and reduce intermediaries, ensuring better price realization for farmers.
These are just a few examples of the government schemes for agriculture in India. The government continues to introduce and implement various other schemes and initiatives to support farmers and promote agricultural development in the country.

India’s Millet Led Growth: From Overlooked Ragi To Global Superfood
Millets are going to be the superfood of India. It has started gaining popularity and is also being promoted as a global brand while highlighting its benefits like its nutritional value, environmental sustainability, and cultural significance. Millets are a kind of coarse cereal being cultivated for thousands of years, mostly in Asia and Africa, and are consumed by over 50 crore people worldwide on a daily basis. Millets have a long history and great nutritional value. But still, they’ve been overlooked in favour of other staple crops, such as rice and wheat.
But, India is seeking to change this by rebranding their old and failed millet as a superfood that is high in iron and calcium, and as a climate-friendly crop that consumes less water and has a lower carbon footprint than rice or wheat. India is targeting nearly 2.1 crore tons of millet production in 2022–23. While India’s millet exports were 1,47,501 tons in FY21, they rose to 1,59,332 tons in FY22. This rebranding is also aiming at raising their exports from $64 million in 2021–22 to $100 million by FY25.
India has launched several initiatives to support this campaign, including the Millet International Initiative for Research and Awareness (MIIRA), made for worldwide research collaboration for food crops. India is making these efforts to get the world to observe 2023 as the International Year of Millets, and convincing 72 countries to support them made them successful in getting the proposal passed at the UN in March 2021.
India has also been implementing a program under the National Food Security Mission (NFSM) on nutri-cereals (millets) in 212 districts of 14 states since 2018–19. Incentives were provided to farmers for crop production, protection technologies, nutrient, and pest management, and more. Millets are supplied to beneficiaries under the targeted public distribution system, procured, stored, and distributed by the state governments under decentralized procurement, with MSP-based procurement under the central pool.
Millets can be grown on arid or parched lands with minimal inputs and their resilience to climate change make them an ideal solution for countries to increase self-sufficiency and cut down on imported cereal grains. They use 70% less water than rice and need 40% less energy for processing, making them climate-friendly and also richer in key nutrients with a lower glycemic index, reducing the risk of diabetes and associated ailments.
According to an Indian study, replacing rice with millet in standard meals can boost growth in children and adolescents by 26 to 39 percent. Children consuming millet for a period ranging from three months to four and a half years showed a relative increase of 28.2 percent in height and 26 percent in weight, with a 39 percent increase in the mid-upper arm circumference and 37 percent increase in the chest circumference when compared to children on regular rice-based diets.
Millet helped to manage type 2 diabetes, lower cholesterol levels, and tackle obesity and anaemia. Countries can start nutrition-developing intervention programs by adding millet to mid-day meal schemes and various maternal and child health programs. The awareness and marketing campaigns will generate an understanding and interest in millets to bring the benefits of millets to the wider society.

Major Drivers" for the Powered Agriculture Equipment Market in India
Market Overview
The sustainable and economic development of the country has always been dependent on agriculture and its allied sectors. In the previous years, 2016-17, agriculture contributed 17.4 percent of the country’s economy. And the demand for mechanization within the country has always been accelerating rapidly each year. The Powered Agricultural Equipment Market in India currently holds about 40-45 percent in terms of farm mechanization and this has been predominant in states like UP, Haryana, and Punjab among many others. The penetration rate of Powered Agricultural Equipment in such states is still considered negligible when compared to other countries such as the United States, Brazil, and China.
Each with a penetration rate of 95%, 75%, and 57% respectively for farm mechanization. The major highlight is noticed in recent years when the country has a sudden jump in sales of agricultural machinery. The sales over the past few years were at an all-time high at a rate of 3.64 percent. Many factors complement the growth in sales of powered agricultural machinery such as Increased availability of power to farms, huge demand for tractors, and tillers. It is also possible to insist that many government policies in recent years have been focused on boosting the rate of mechanization of farms to economically and timely meet the increasing food demand in the country.
As discussed above, increasing demand for tractors and tillers can be considered as a complement to the growth in the sale of powered agricultural machinery in India. Thus, it is also identified that the share of power from the tractor segment in terms of overall farm power has been increasing rapidly over the years. The availability of farm power has increased from 0.29 to 2.02 kW per hectare from 2000 to 2017. And farm power requirement is said to reach 4.0 kW per hectare by 2030 when compared with the growing demand for food grains. In recent times, the power availability per hectare in the year 2020-21 is 2.761 kW. The use or dependence on any available equipment for the available farm power is divided into tractors (59.39%), power tillers (1.02%), diesel engines (14.028%), electric motors (19.57%), Animals, and Humans (6.002%).
It is clear from the above data that maximum farm power is dependent on Tractors and Tillers. And this is also identified in the increased sales volume of tractors from 580,000 units in 2016-2017 to 900,000 units in the year 2020-2021. The expected project for the sale of tractors in the year 2021-2022 (FY22) is 930,000 units. A similar kind of increase is recorded for the sale of Power Tillers, which has increased from 14,385 units to 19,844 units in the same period. A significant boost in the sale of powered agricultural equipment can be achieved if the sale of Tractors and Tillers remain at a steady hike.
India is one of the largest producers of tractors and is thus considered the largest market for tractors in the entire world. India has always been an active exporter of tractors to various countries all around the world. The domestic sale, as well as the export of tractors, is at a rapid incline compared to the previous year. The domestic sales went up by 26.9% and exports by 16.4% in comparison to 2019-2020. It is predicted that the sale of tractors is bound to increase further under the influence of various schemes offered by the government such as the Remunerative Approach for Agriculture and Allied sector Rejuvenation (RKVY), National Food Security Mission (NFSM), National Mission on Oilseeds and Oil Palm (NHM & NMOOP).
Import and Export Data:
Tractors are exported to more than 169 countries around the world. During the year 2020-2021, the export volume of 8,684,538 units of tractors contributed to a net worth of 148.64 Million USD. The import trading of tractors took a rapid hit in 2020 when compared to 2019. The trading value dropped by 17.36 per cent compared to the previous year from 69,920,928 Million USD to 57,776,006 Million USD.
Competition Strategy
The Powered Agricultural Machinery Market of India faces tough competition from global market players such as Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., TAFE, Escorts Group, Sonalika, John Deere India among many others. These companies want to attain the highest market share possible and they do it through means of mergers and acquisitions, expansions, partnerships and innovative product launches. This has been leading to the consolidation of the market for many years.
Some of the Global Major Players include:
John Deere India Private Limited
TAFE Motors and Tractors Limited
International Tractors Ltd. (Sonalika)
Escorts Limited
Mahindra & Mahindra Limited
CNH Industrial (India) Private Limited
Covid-19 scenario:
Surprisingly, a positive effect has been established on the demand for tractors due to the pandemic. With a sudden rise in demand for agricultural produces like vegetables, fruits, and cereals, farmers considered moving towards powered agricultural machinery for their daily farming activities.
As per the recent reports, a CAGR growth of 5.1% is predicted for the Indian Tractor Market from 2021 to 2030 and is estimated to reach a net worth of 12.70 Billion USD by 2030 from 7.5 Billion USD in 2020. Although, some of the practices that must be addressed are lack of information or understanding in farmers about efficient agri-machinery, high-cost requirements for tractors and other equipment. Some of these abundant issues are tackled by the government and if done well, this will open new opportunities shortly.

Agriculture Tire Market Growth, Scope 2021
A recent study conducted by the strategic consulting and market research firm, BlueWeave Consulting, revealed that the global agriculture tire market was worth USD 8.92 billion in the year 2020. The market is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 6.1%, earning revenue of around USD 13.59 billion by the end of 2027. The growing demand for agricultural equipment with high efficiency and productivity is driving the global agricultural tire market, particularly among developed nations. Additionally, the market is experiencing significant growth due to the growing need for food due to the increasing population. The high dependence on agriculture and rapid economic growth of emerging economies such as India, China, Japan, etc., is also fueling the demand for agriculture equipment, such as tractors and harvesters, further propelling the growth of agriculture tires. Many governments are also coming up with a range of schemes and subsidies to support the adoption of advanced farming technologies by small and marginal farmers, and these incentives are expected to fuel market growth. However, the high cost of agricultural tires may act as a major restraint on the market.
Favorable Government Initiatives and Subsidies Boosting the Global Agriculture Tire Market Growth
Due to the high cost of farming equipment, the governments of various countries provide various schemes, subsidies, and low-interest loans which fuels the growth of the global agriculture tire market. For instance, more than $20 billion is spent by the U.S government on subsidies for farm businesses each year. Likewise, China’s central government offers low-cost loans to farmers, especially for fertilizers and agricultural machinery, and recapitalizes the Rural Credit Cooperatives to ward off bad loans. Additionally, the Government of India offers the National Food Security Mission (NFSM) scheme under which it provides aids for machinery equipment and maintenance to increase productivity. Such initiatives are anticipated to boost the growth of the global agriculture tire market.
Increasing OEM Investment Towards Expanding Tire Production Capacity Propelling the Market’s Growth
In response to the growing demand for farming equipment in the market, OEMs are investing significantly in expanding their agriculture tire production to stay competitive. The tire manufacturers are expanding their current capacity and establishing new plants to boost their production. Challenges in the Adoption of Modern Technology in Agriculture
India is an agrarian country and one of the major exporter of agricultural products worldwide. Even though that is correct, it is a fact that India lacks tremendously in terms of usage of farming technology that has the potential to multifold agricultural production three times than today. This scenario is changing as India has started working on this issue. There are many encouragement programmes and investments by government and non-government agencies and investors for the development of agri technology suitable for Indian agriculture. The article discusses the government initiatives and the challenges faced by both sides viz government as well as farmers.
The government of India has established the Department of Agriculture (DOA) that implements several projects focused on different objectives within the agriculture sector. Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) implements front line demonstrations and Integrated Scheme of Oilseeds, Pulses, Oil palm & Maize (ISOPOM) and Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA). These are engaged for the implementation of the National Horticulture Mission (NHM), National Food Security Mission (NFSM) and Integrated Scheme of Oilseeds, Pulses, Oil palm & Maize (ISOPOM). These schemes were initiated for better agricultural developments but have failed to some extent due to the inability of the government to deliver them to farmers properly.
Agri technology in India is under development, and farmers get confused to choose among available options due to unproven results in these products, maybe seeds, fertilisers, pesticides, or equipment. Modern technology in agriculture includes biotechnology, gene technology, nanotechnology, automated machines and instruments, and farm management solutions. Most of the Indian farmers are illiterate or unaware of agri technology introduced to make their efforts efficient and comfortable. Other than this, these farming technologies are costly that smallholders can not afford, and major Indian farmers are smallholders. Thus, even modern technology in agriculture has the potential to transform farming; it is challenging in Indian ground.
Agricultural development is one of the urgent needs to combat environmental challenges the world is facing, and the adoption of agri technology can provide strength to withstand extreme weather situations. But, if the efforts of Bihar government in agricultural development are considered as an example, then only 22.8% interviewed farmers used modern seeds. In this survey, 46.67% of medium farmers and only 13.89% of marginal farmers used current varieties of seeds. Resources are available for large farmers under NHM (National Horticulture Mission), but only 18.75% of big holders preferred modern sources. If India is facing such extreme issues only in the adoption of modern seeds, there are lot many challenges in the adoption of other agri technologies.

Why demand for organic food is rising in India?
"It is vitally important that we can continue to say, with absolute conviction, that organic farming delivers the highest quality, best-tasting food, produced without artificial chemicals or genetic modification, and with respect for animal welfare and the environment, while helping to maintain the landscape and rural communities." - Prince Charles
Agricultural farming is the foremost way of producing food in an economy. With the growing number of population in any country, demand for food grains also increases. This again lead to the excessive use of chemicals and fertilizers to increase production in agricultural sector in multi-fold. Genetically modified vegetables and meat products that can be produced in abundance within a very short period of time may appear favourable for profit making farmers, but it has a harmful effect on health as well as the environment.
Health conscious citizens of modern era are now opting for better alternative to farm products that are chemical free and also nutritious. Keeping this need in mind, the organic food industry got its root into people's life.
In the past one decade trends in the demand for chemical free food products have been increasing significantly all over the world. In India too, the craze for organic farming is growing. India exported over 500 million dollars of organic food during the year 2017-18. The annual growth rate associated with the sector is around 17% every year. There are various reasons behind this sudden rise in the demand for organic food industry in the country. Here are a few of them:-
Governmental support for Organic Farming:-
The first and the foremost may be Governmental support through extending support and financial assistance to the farmers of the country in order to promote organic farming. The Government introduced various schemes like Parampargat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) under which organic farming is promoted through adoption of organic village by cluster approach and PGS certification. Other schemes include National Food Security Mission (NFSM), Mission for Sustainable Agriculture, etc. also added to the growth of such farming practice in India. Also the Government of India as implemented National programme for organic production (NPOP) which is held responsible for checking quality standards of organic products, promotion of organic farming etc.
Digital literacy and e-commerce development:-
With the rise in the use of digital medium to learn and the spread awareness of organic farming in the country. People can now come to know about the harmful effects of using synthetic chemical fertilizers in food grains production. Development of ecommerce sites made availability of organic food products online very easy. They can now be delivered at the doorsteps with just a few button pressing and calls. Earlier the demand for organic food was only limited to the bigger metros. But, nowadays, they are also penetrating the markets of the smaller cities and towns of the country.
Increase in health consciousness:-
