Notre commentaire : “Black Butterfly” est un thriller américain datant de 2017, réalisé par Brian Goodman, à qui l’on doit également “Boston Streets” (2008). Les acteurs principaux sont Antonio Banderas, qu’on a pu voir dans “Automata” (2014), Jonathan Rhys Meyers, qu’on a pu voir dans “Les Orphelins de Huang Shi” (2008), Piper Perabo, qu’on a pu voir dans “Looper” (2012), Abel Ferrara, qu’on a pu voir dans “Sculpt” (2016), et Vincent Riotta, qu’on a pu voir dans “Rush” (2013).

L’histoire proposée par “Black Butterfly” offre essentiellement une rencontre entre deux personnages, Paul Lopez, incarné par Antonio Banderas, un écrivain en manque d’inspiration et en souffrance depuis que sa femme l’a quitté, qui noie son chagrin et son désarroi dans l’alcool, et Jack, interprété par Jonathan Rhys Meyers, un vagabond, que Paul va accueillir, certainement pour rompre sa solitude et pour le remercier de l’avoir sorti d’une situation tendue. Jack va proposer à Paul de l’aider à réparer sa maison, car ce dernier désir la vendre. Jack pousse également Paul à reprendre l’écriture en lui apportant de nouvelles idées. Cependant, l’attitude de Jack va changer, devenant de plus en plus agressive. Paul va se sentir menacé et finalement séquestrer, avant que tout ne bascule. 

L’intrigue est assez forte, et on comprend assez vite que Jack est le meurtrier qui sévit dans la région, la tension monte progressivement au fur et à mesure que de petits détails font leur apparition. La violence s’installe et on pense que tout est terminé quand arrive un twist terrible. On se fait littéralement avoir en beauté. On en reste pantois. Heureusement qu’on est assis, car c’est assez stupéfiant. Les images se bousculent, les éléments nous sont à nouveau présentés sous un angle nouveau qui nous fait alors prendre conscience qu’on était dans l’erreur depuis le début. C’est magnifique de se faire rouler comme cela. 

Le film repose essentiellement sur la dualité entre les deux acteurs principaux qui délivrent là d’excellentes prestations. La confrontation s’apparente fortement à un huis clos. Cependant, quelques scènes d’action viennent renforcer le suspense et la tension grandissante entre les deux protagonistes. La photographie est magnifique, la maison de Paul étant isolée à la montagne, à proximité des bois. C’est en Italie que le tournage s’est déroulé, même l’action est censée se dérouler aux États-Unis. 

Bien que le film ne semble pas disposer d’un énorme budget, tout est très bien fait, et surtout, tout respire le thriller à 100%. Antonios Banderas délivre une très bonne prestation, mais il est toutefois éclipsé par Jonathan Rhys Myers qui délivre une excellente performance. L’acteur offre un personnage mystérieux, secret, presque taciturne, dont on sent qu’il peut basculer dans l’hyper-violence rapidement. Rien dans son attitude ne laisser augurer de ce qui va suivre. 

En conclusion, “Black Butterfly” est un très bon thriller qu’on a découvert avec surprise, n’en n’ayant pas entendu parlé avant. L’histoire repose entièrement sur les prestations des deux acteurs principaux. Antonios Banderas offre une très bonne prestation et montre pleinement ses compétences d’acteur. Jonathan Rhys Meyers est tout aussi bon, si ce n’est mieux, offrant un personnage de psychopathe très crédible. L’atmosphère est particulièrement claustrophobe tout en étant entrecoupée d’une superbe photographie en raison du magnifique lieu de tournage. On garde son attention durant les 90 minutes du métrage. Un film solide et un très bon divertissement qu’on ne peut que recommander.

Trama : Black Butterfly, diretto da Brian Goodman, racconta una storia piena di mistero, con protagonisti uno scrittore sull'orlo della bancarotta e un serial killer che arriva per sconvolgere una tranquilla cittadina di campagna. Paul (Antonio Banderas) è uno sceneggiatore che non riesce a scrivere nulla da quando la moglie lo ha lasciato, quattro anni prima. È costretto a vendere la sua vecchia casa colonica nel bosco per sostentarsi, ma nessuno sembra interessato a comprarla. Quando invita la sua agente immobiliare, Laura (Piper Perabo), a uscire insieme per un appuntamento, mentre sta andando ad incontrarla in un piccolo ristorante del posto, taglia la strada a un camionista su un ripido tornante di montagna, e per poco non uccide entrambi. Il camionista lo segue al ristorante e cerca la lite con lui, aggredendolo, dopo che Laura se ne sarà andata per incontrare un altro cliente. A salvare Paul è l'intervento di Jack (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), un vagabondo seduto al bancone, che ha la meglio sul camionista e gli sussurra qualcosa all'orecchio che lo fa scappare via per lo spavento. Per ripagare Jack dell'aiuto, Paul lo invita a stare a casa sua per la notte e lui accetta. I due vanno molto d'accordo, tanto che che Paul gli permette di restare quanto vuole, in cambio di piccole riparazioni che devono essere fatte in casa. Jack sembra molto interessato alla vita di Paul e finisce per suggerigli di scrivere una storia sulla loro esperienza insieme. Il racconto diventa quasi un'ossessione per Jack e quando Paul cerca di uscire di casa per vedere di nuovo Laura, il misterioso vagabondo si rifiuta di farlo andare via fino a quando la storia non sarà finita. Per assicurarsi la collaborzione di Paul, Jack distrugge il suo cellulare, gli ruba le chiavi dell'auto e getta via persino tutti i suoi liquori per farlo restare lucido mentre scrive. Il comportamento di Jack diventa sempre più aggressivo, ed è implicito che lui sia in realtà il serial killer che la polizia locale sta cercando. Quando, in maniera inaspettata, Laura va da Paul per vedere come sta, Jack prende in ostaggio anche lei...

Rating: 6/10 A failing writer takes in a drifter who saved his ass in a road rage incident, but the rage has only just begun as the drifter takes over …

Solid psychological thriller, with good performances. The pace is even, and everything is introduced in good time. It's mostly a two-hander, with decent dialogue and a steady ramp up in tension, only to switch at the end with a clear twist. I guess the only problem is that we rely on the government to tell us what's true in the end – bit old fashioned and needed more weird, maybe more influence from female characters.

All the actors are good, and the direction. Nothing special in the photography or sound.

Overall: worth a look.
