In 2016 my anthropological fieldwork took me to the rural highlands of Bosnia with the objective of researching and learning as much as I could about traditional female tattooing. I interviewed the elderly women who bear the last of these tattoos, the roots of which are embedded deep within a pre-Christian Illyrian past. I collected not just symbols, but the stories and wisdom of strong and resilient women that had survived not one, but two wars.
All this made me wonder; if I could talk to the women of the past, what would I learn? And if I could talk to the wise women of the past – those who were familiar with a wider world, that of the spirits and the invisible forces hiding within nature – then what would they tell me? Women were given little space in historical record, and wise women even less, often being from marginalised fringes of society.
My mind started to spin, and the idea for this book was born.

"A life without love is of no account. Don’t ask yourself what kind of love you should seek, spiritual or material, divine or mundane, Eastern or Western. Divisions only lead to more divisions. Love has no labels, no definitions. It is what it is, pure and simple. Love is the water of life. And a lover is a soul of fire! The universe turns differently when fire loves water." --Shams Tabrizi
“Beltane” depicting the May Queen and the Horned God. by Natasa Ilincic
They cannot exist without each other. When the Horned God (the Winter aspect of the Green Man) sees the May Queen in her Maiden form, he realises that to be with the woman he loves he will need to undergo a huge change. As they process together around the hill, he prepares to surrender his life to her.

Cailleach by Natasa Ilincic
Mountains grew my bones, Cold streams carved my skin.
Sweet summer I devour, Harden her soft moss Under my frosted claws.
Wild beasts I rule, For they know my call When it thunders through the glen.

The one with art by Natasa Ilincic, or is there another one I haven't seen yet? 👀
Trying not to be jealous of certain personalities in the tarot world who have copies of The Witch's Garden Tarot early (for free).
It will be in my collection eventually, patience.

The Owl Witch by Natasa Ilincic
As the Northern Hemisphere moves towards the dark half of the year and the coming of the Cailleach, it is interesting to note the various roles the owl plays in folklore. Very often considered a harbinger of death, this is not always the case, and, indeed, the death or ending of one way of life may be the beginning of another, so surface symbolism may belie a deeper meaning. ~ Circle Stories
