We've got six new releases on our radar this week! Which ones do you want to check out?
Aisle Nine by Ian X. Cho HarperCollins
It’s Black Friday—and the apocalypse is on sale! Ever since the world filled with portals to hell and bloodthirsty demons started popping out on the reg, Jasper’s life has gotten worse and worse. A teenage nobody with no friends or family, he is plagued by the life he can’t remember and the person he’s sure he’s supposed to be. Jasper spends his days working as a checkout clerk at the Here for You discount mart, where a hell portal in aisle nine means danger every shift. But at least at the mart he can be near his crush, Kyle Kuan, a junior member of the monster-fighting Vanguard, though Kyle really seems to hate Jasper for reasons he doesn’t remember or understand. But when Jasper and Kyle learn they both share a frightening vision of the impending apocalypse, they’re forced to team up and uncover the uncomfortable truth about the hell portals and the demons that haunt the world. Because the true monsters are not always what they seem, the past is not always what we wish, and like it or not, on Black Friday, all hell will break loose starting in aisle nine. Perfect for fans of Grasshopper Jungle or The Last of Us comes Aisle Nine, the debut young adult novel from rising YA star Ian X. Cho.
A Constellation of Minor Bears by Jen Ferguson Heartdrum
Award-winning author Jen Ferguson has written a powerful story about teens grappling with balancing resentment with enduring friendship—and how to move forward with a life that’s not what they’d imagined. Before that awful Saturday, Molly used to be inseparable from her brother, Hank, and his best friend, Tray. The indoor climbing accident that left Hank with a traumatic brain injury filled Molly with anger. While she knows the accident wasn’t Tray’s fault, she will never forgive him for being there and failing to stop the damage. But she can’t forgive herself for not being there either. Determined to go on the trio’s post-graduation hike of the Pacific Crest Trail, even without Hank, Molly packs her bag. But when her parents put Tray in charge of looking out for her, she is stuck backpacking with the person who incites her easy anger. Despite all her planning, the trail she’ll walk has a few more twists and turns ahead. . . .

Flamboyants: The Queer Harlem Renaissance I Wish I'd Known written by George M. Johnson & illustrated by Charly Palmer Farrar, Straus and Giroux (BYR)
From the New York Times–bestselling author of All Boys Aren’t Blue comes an empowering set of essays about Black and Queer icons from the Harlem Renaissance. In Flamboyants, George M. Johnson celebrates writers, performers, and activists from 1920s Black America whose sexualities have been obscured throughout history. Through 14 essays, Johnson reveals how American culture has been shaped by icons who are both Black and Queer – and whose stories deserve to be celebrated in their entirety. Interspersed with personal narrative, powerful poetry, and illustrations by award-winning illustrator Charly Palmer, Flamboyants looks to the past for understanding as to how Black and Queer culture has defined the present and will continue to impact the future. With candid prose and an unflinching lens towards truth and hope, George M. Johnson brings young adult readers an inspiring collection of biographies that will encourage teens today to be unabashed in their layered identities.
The Hysterical Girls of St. Bernadette's by Hanna Alkaf Salaam Reads / Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
For over a hundred years, girls have fought to attend St. Bernadette’s, with its reputation for shaping only the best and brightest young women. Unfortunately, there is also the screaming. When a student begins to scream in the middle of class, a chain reaction starts that impacts the entire school. By the end of the day, seventeen girls are affected—along with St. Bernadette’s stellar reputation. Khadijah’s got her own scars to tend to, and watching her friends succumb to hysteria only rips apart wounds she’d rather keep closed. But when her sister falls to the screams, Khad knows she’s the only one who can save her. Rachel has always been far too occupied trying to reconcile her overbearing mother’s expectations with her own secret ambitions to pay attention to school antics. But just as Rachel finds her voice, it turns into screams. Together, the two girls find themselves digging deeper into the school’s dark history, hunting for the truth. Little do they know that a specter lurks in the darkness, watching, waiting, and hungry for its next victim…
Payal Mehta's Romance Revenge Plot by Preeti Chhibber Kokila
This laugh-out-loud debut romance introduces perfectly imperfect Payal Mehta, whose plan to get her long-time crush to finally notice her is destined for success, but only if she ignores her budding feelings for her archnemesis... Payal Mehta has had a crush on popular, athletic, all-around perfect Jonathan Slate ever since he smiled at her in freshman–year Spanish class. At a party during spring break of her junior year, Payal finally works up the courage to ask Jon to hang out. However, her romantic plans are derailed when he vomits on her Keds. Twice. But when Jon offers to take her out to lunch as an apology, Payal is convinced this is the start of their love story. Over chalupas and burritos at Taco Bell, Payal's best jokes are landing as planned. Jon is basically choking on his Coke—and then it happens. "Do you have a boyfriend?" Payal is (finally) about to get the guy. And then he tries to set her up with his Indian friend. Payal's best friends, Neil Patel and Divya Bhatt, are just as mad about the microaggression as Payal is, but they think she’s a little too hung up on him. Determined to teach Jon a lesson by making him fall for her, Payal ropes in her archnemesis, Philip Kim, to help by ceding creative control over their psych project. It’s the perfect plan. Minus Philip’s snarky, annoying quips and lack of faith in its success. But as Payal lies to the people she loves, hides the too-Indian parts of herself in front of her crush, and learns that maybe Philip isn't the worst, she starts to wonder if what she's been looking for has been scowling at her all along...

Aperture | Our Town
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Natalie brought me to her office as she was reminded of a photo book that related to my work, that being Aperture Our Town. This book focuses on community in America in the 1980s/90s and the idea of the "American Dream".
I have chosen to isolate and focus on are suburbia landscape and or documentary styled images. The symbol of the white picket fence is a traditionally American idea that represents stability, comfort, and an idealistic life with a large house and family, yet in these images it is used in the opposite way. The picket fences are situated either in front of run down old housing or an abandoned mall and is lacking the positivity we would except. The fence dominates the foreground in one of the images and takes up 2/3 of the image which makes me think of the fence as being unwelcoming and it feels like a prison wall instead. This juxtaposition makes us rethink the "American Dream" idea and how unattainable and or unrealistic it actually is. We are forced to ponder over these ideas with how jarring and confronting the tone feels.
The remaining images focus on depicting isolated and singular structures, natural events such as death, a family in front of their livelihood and barking dogs sequenced with children. The family in front of their farm is paired with a caption "Rural communities are shrinking inexorably, losing first the post office, then the café, then the school, lastly the church." Which explains the negative effect of modern living and how we have adapted, fazing out the old and in with the new. These communities are fading and being left behind as society is ever reaching for the next best thing. Those who are comfortable with staying put and not wishing for anything more may be left behind with nothing as everyone else favours the new. These ideas are truths that we shy away from, for they make us feel uncomfortable and uneasy.
These ideas are closely linked with my own photography exploration and ideas/message that I wish to share in my collection.
This book contains images that I have analysed from S.A. Backman, David Byrne, Richard Misrach, Stuart Klipper, Rhondal McKinney, David Husom and Jack Carnell

Open for bootleg trading~
Hello all! I am posting my bootleg list here for now as a temporary list until I get my website up and running- I am open to trading! I’m mainly looking for any Cats production- preferably English or Dutch but any musical would be nice to have and expand my collection.
Addams Family - Broadway - March 12, 2010
FORMAT: .VOB w/o smalls
CAST:Nathan Lane (Gomez Addams), Bebe Neuwirth (Morticia Addams), Terrence Mann (Mal Beineke), Carolee Carmello (Alice Beineke), Kevin Chamberlin (Uncle Fester), Jackie Hoffman (Grandma), Zachary James (Lurch), Wesley Taylor (Lucas Beineke), Krysta Rodriguez (Wednesday Addams), Adam Riegler (Pugsley Addams)
NOTES: Video quality isn't the best, and audio is sometimes on the softer side. Still a very entertaining show.
Anastasia - Broadway - September 6, 2017
FORMAT: (VOBs w/ smalls)
CAST: Christy Altomare (Anastasia), Derek Klena (Dmitry), John Bolton (Vlad), Ramin Karimloo (Gleb), Caroline O'Connor (Lily), Mary Beth Peil (Maria Feodorovna), Zach Adkins, Sissy Bell, Lauren Blackman, Kyle Brown, Janet Dickinson, Constantine Germanacos, Wes Hart, Ken Krugman, Shina Ann Morris, James A. Pierce III, Molly Rushing, Nicole Scimerca, Johnny Stellard, Allison Walsh (Ensemble)
Aladdin - Broadway, 2014-Nov-05 (SunsetBlvd79‘s master)
Format: VOB + smalls (7.58 GB)
CAST: Adam Jacobs (Aladdin), Courtney Reed (Jasmine), Merwin Foard (s/b Jafar), Michael James Scott (s/b Genie)
NOTES: Beautiful HD capture of latest Disney Broadway offering. Great to see the changes from the Toronto tryout. Michael and Merwin do terrific jobs as Genie and Jafar.
Beauty and the Beast New Zealand April 2006 - Proshot
Format: .VOB w/ smalls
Cast: Jade Steele, Russell Dixon, Glen Drake, Rob Ormsby, Gladys Hope
NOTES: Only the first act & first part of act two!
Beauty and the Beast (Disney) - Broadway - July 27, 2007 (Unknown's video master)

NOTES: Two days before the show closed on Broadway. Good amount of closeups and good quality filmed from the mid-mezzanine; there is a railing issue for a while in Act 1 but the taper improves. 'Me', 'Gaston' and 'Be Our Guest' are all predominantly missing and recording stopped for some time after 'Gaston', which created a little jump in the timeline to where Maurice gets thrown out of the tavern. Still a nice video with great closeups of the last Broadway cast.

NOTES: Some people walking across the image for a few seconds during Jennyanydots and Rum Tum Tugger's number. Sometimes a head is visible but not obstructing the action. Almost no white-outs with very good video quality. Audio is very crisp as well. Filmed from a higher seat, but zooms are excellently done and fluent. Overal an amazing bootleg!

If you’re interested, please don’t hesitate to contact me! Like I said I would love any cats bootleg- especially the older ones in English and Dutch from like the 80′s till the 00′s. I am also looking for more diversity in my list- and I’m also looking for the classics- Dear Evan Hansen, Falsetto’s, some more Phantom Of the Opera, Mean Girls, Legally Blond, etc...

INTRODUCING; SARAH MCKINNEY
Tumblr media
Age:  37
Gender: Cis Woman
Pronouns: She/her
Occupation: Lawyer at McKinney & Associates
Trigger Warnings: heart attack mention
background
Sarah is the oldest born child to Beth and Richard McKinney, seven years older than her brother, Noah.
Her parents were very busy people, decent enough parents, but they often never really seemed to have time for their children, or so Sarah and her brother used to think. Due to this Sarah and Noah grew up fairly close, and she’s extremely protective over her baby brother.
Sarah has always been extremely ambitious, top of most of her classes, had a large number of friends, and was on the cheer team.
During High School, Sarah began to date a close friend of hers, Dale Waters. The two of them had been friends since they were little, the boy being one of her closest friends next to Natalie Dixon and Sarah had been hesitant when she realised she was developing feelings for him; not wanting to ruin the friendship the two of them had. However, after finding out the other felt the same, the two only seemed to grow closer, and Sarah had been head over heels in love with him.
This, and her close relationship with her brother, is what made Sarah hesitant about going to Law school to follow in her family’s footsteps. The school she got into was prestigious, but it was also far away from Wakefield and the people she cared about. She wasn’t too fused about leaving her parents behind, but the idea of leaving Noah and Dale wasn’t something she wanted. Still, Sarah left anyway.
She kept in contact with Noah as much as she could while she studied, but was often too busy studying to actually visit home.
Dale would come and visit her as often as he could, but the distance was putting a strain on their relationship and so they agreed to break up. Sarah always thought she’d go back to him the minute she finished law school, having been heartbroken when they called things off.
Until she met Michael Clayton. Mike was charming, and had just as much family money as she did (not that she cared about that) but at first she wasn’t interested. Still, he made it his goal to get to know her, and eventually she found her interest caught by the other. She felt guilty at first, liking Mike, but she couldn’t help it.
Eventually the two of them fell into a relationship, and Sarah couldn’t help but fall head over heels for the other, Michael proposing in her final year of law school.
She’d kept somewhat in touch with Dale over the years, but she wasn’t entirely sure how to tell him she was engaged, so she didn’t - she wasn’t entirely sure she was going back to Wakefield anymore anyway, especially since Noah was now 18.
However, Michael turned around and surprised her, telling her he got a job and brought them an house in Wakefield. Sarah was stunned, and not entirely sure how to react, but seeing how overjoyed the other was, went along with it anyway.
Moving back home was weird. It had basically been seven years since she’d stepped foot in the town, and while she’d kept in contact with most people, she wasn’t sure how to feel.
Sarah knew she had to break the news to Dale, and when the two of them were catching up, she planned to do it - except - it didn’t go the way she wanted. It had been so easy talking with Dale, despite the years apart, and the situation had gotten rather flirtatious - which is what lead to her blurting out she was engaged, before swiftly leaving, not wanting to see the expression on his face.
It was awkward between them at first, but the two of them went back to being friends - not entirely as close as they had been before, but close all the same.
Michael and Sarah got married a year after living in Wakefield, and Sarah loved her husband. She was working at her family firm, and things seemed - good.
Sarah had her first child at 28, Susannah Clayton, then two years later, Simon Clayton, her son. Sarah loves her kids with all her heart, and will always say they’re the best thing she’s ever done.
When Simon turned two, that’s when Sarah started to notice things with Michael where different. She’d soon realise they’d been off since their son was born, but had remained in denial. However, two years later, the signs that Michael had lost interest and that her marriage was failing was clear. Sarah did everything she could to keep her marriage alive, trying not to let the many business trips Michael disappeared on for weeks at a time phase her. She tried desperately to save her marriage in between her job and practically raising Susie and Simon alone. The only reason she didn’t want to divorce Michael was for the sake of the children.
It continued like this, until a little over a year ago, when Michael handed her divorce papers over breakfast one morning. He told her he’d met someone else, and while he swore he’d not cheated physically, Sarah wasn’t entirely sure whether she believed him. Sarah realised she’d spent the last four years struggling and miserable for nothing, so she signed the papers. Within a week, Michael had packed up his things, taken everything he brought and left. Sarah isn’t entirely sure where he’s gone, and while he’s sent money occasionally for the kids and has a weekly phone call, he’s practically absent from their lives - which is what angers her most.
At some point, her father suffered a heart attack, and Noah came home to help their mother. Sarah was glad to have her brother home, despite the circumstances that brought him back.
Recently, Sarah dedicates most of her time to her work and her kids. Despite having moved on from Michael longer than she’d admit out loud, Sarah’s hesitant about dating again, sticking to a more casual arrangement.
She also recently found out through her daughter Michael is now engaged to the woman he left her for, with a new baby on the way. The other seemingly so distracted by his new family life that his phone calls with his children are becoming less and less, much to her annoyance.
wanted connections:
friends from high school that she kept in contact with
old family friends - she’s a founding family member after all
one night stand - probably happened one drunken night fairly shortly after she signed the divorce papers - refuses to acknowledge it happened
clients & coworkers !

Interview with William C. Morris Award finalist Adib Khorram: the Bitmoji edition.
It’s that time of year again! I love my William C. Morris Award family, and I’m so overjoyed to welcome finalist Adib Khorram into the fold. I am head over heels for Adib’s debut, DARIUS THE GREAT IS NOT OKAY. It’s about the most endearing tea-drinking, soccer-playing, half-white, half-Persian, fictional nerd you’ve ever met. I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s one of my favorite books of all time - and outlets like TIME, Buzzfeed, Kirkus, Publisher’s Weekly, Entertainment Weekly, Cosmopolitan, the New York Times (and more) totally agree with me.
Tumblr media
But the number one DARIUS fan? My Bitmoji. She’s actually kind of embarrassing about it. When I told her she’d be interviewing Adib’s bitmoji, she screamed. It was loud. I tried to talk her out of wearing her Adib fandom t-shirt to the interview, but.
Tumblr media
Yeah.
So without further ado, let’s turn it over to the bitmojis!
Beckmoji: Huge congrats on being a finalist for the Morris Award! I’m ridiculously happy for you, and I can’t emphasize enough how well-deserved this is. Can you tell me about the moment you found out you were a finalist?
Adibmoji: I was actually doing the dishes when I got the phone call. I could tell it was [editor] Dana from my watch, so I dried off my hands and answered. And I’m kind of embarrassed to admit it but I kept washing dishes as we talked because I’m one of those people that doesn’t like to leave the dishes half-done; plus I had a school visit that afternoon so I wanted to finish them before I left. But we had a great chat and screamed together and it was awesome and wonderful and totally surprising.
Tumblr media
Beckmoji: Darius has touched so many people’s hearts – I legit get DMs from people gushing about it, just because they know I’m a fan. I imagine it’s been the kind of year that can only truly be described in gifs. If you had to pick three that best capture your debut experience, what would they be?
Tumblr media
Adibmoji: Debut year has been a whirlwind and amazing and I’ve been incredibly humbled by the response to Darius.
Tumblr media
Adibmoji: Honestly a lot of the time it’s felt kind of surreal.
Tumblr media
Adibmoji: But also it’s been an incredible amount of fun. I could not have predicted or asked for a better debut experience.
Tumblr media
Beckmoji: Darius’s experience with depression hit so close to home for me, and I know I speak for many readers when I say that. What advice would you give to readers, especially teens like Darius, who may be living with depression?
Adibmoji: I always feel like advice is great when it works and terrible when it doesn’t. So instead I’d rather let readers know that even though it feels like depression can be this big, life-defining thing, it’s not. Depression is just one small part of their life, and not even the most interesting part.
Tumblr media
Beckmoji: Darius’s friendship with Sohrab cuts so deep – their love for each other is palpable, and the rough moments between them are painfully real. I loved the exploration of all the ruptures and repairs that come with true friendship. What were your favorite moments to write about that friendship? What moments challenged you the most?
Adibmoji: I loved whenever I got the two of them on that rooftop and it felt like they were in their own little world. Those scenes were incredibly fulfilling to write. Probably the most challenging moment was the fight they have toward the end. I’ve never been great at writing fights, because I like it best when all my characters get along. So I had to dig really deep.
I feel like it’s human nature to lash out at the people we love most because we know (or at least hope) that they’re going to forgive us, and that’s what I was trying to get across. I hope I succeeded.
Tumblr media
Beckmoji: I loved seeing Iran through the eyes of a biracial American kid with Persian/white roots. Were there any particular details that felt particularly important to include, either about Iran or about Darius's experience of being Persian?
Adibmoji: I really wanted to show that life is just life in Iran. So often other cultures get exoticized in media, and I wanted to push back against that. And, rather selfishly, I wanted to show Yazd, which is my dad’s hometown.
Tumblr media
Beckmoji: I am a notorious exaggerator about crying during books - I actually rarely do – but I legit sobbed my eyes out near the end of Darius (it was during a conversation with his dad). Were there any parts of the book that made you emotional as you wrote them?
Adibmoji: The main ones were the scene where Darius says goodbye to his grandparents at the end, and the one with Darius and his dad on the rooftop. I came to the sobering realization during the writing process that I was closer in age to Darius’s parents than I was to Darius, and that really informed a lot of the scenes with his parents in general: I was thinking about what they were feeling, and what Darius was feeling, and what Darius thought they were feeling.
I once read that one of the characteristics of the teenage psyche is a tendency to react to the perceived motivations of the behavior, rather than the behavior itself, and that really stuck with me and informed Darius’s relationship with his dad.
Tumblr media
Beckmoji: Are there any books that you would recommend for fans of Darius?
Adibmoji: The entire Simon-verse for starters! For readers seeking more Iranian-American stories, Arvin Ahmadi’s DOWN AND ACROSS, Abdi Nazemian’s THE AUTHENTICS, and literally anything by Sara Farizan (her latest is the stellar HERE TO STAY). Julian Winters’ RUNNING WITH LIONS for readers wanting a story about sports and inclusion and friends and love. For readers like Darius who love sci-fi and fantasy, Natalie C. Parker’s SEAFIRE, L. L. McKinney’s A BLADE SO BLACK, and Alex London’s BLACK WINGS BEATING. For cinnamon rolls dealing with family issues, it’s hard to beat Jandy Nelson’s I’LL GIVE YOU THE SUN or Benjamin Aliré Saenz’s ARISTOTLE & DANTE DISCOVER THE SECRETS OF THE UNIVERSE. And for all the nerds out there, keep your eyes peeled for Lana Wood Johnson’s 2019 debut, TECHNICALLY, YOU STARTED IT, a mistaken-identity romcom starring a pair of nerds who slowly fall in love over text messages.
And, because I can’t go five minutes without mentioning it, I am absolutely obsessed with Martha Wells’s THE MURDERBOT DIARIES, a series of adult sci-fi novellas that I’ve recommended to everyone in my life. They’re about a misanthropic cyborg who would rather watch soap operas but keeps getting forced into being a hero.
Tumblr media
Beckmoji: What are three of your favorite moments from your whirlwind debut year?
Adibmoji: I’m kind of a weirdo and I love conventions, so going to BEA and being surrounded by ALL THE BOOKS was a real highlight. I also got to meet my agent and editor in real life for the first time; and you and I got to say hi again before we both got pulled in different directions; and I got to see New York City for the first time, which filled my theater-kid heart so full.
One time when we were in Austin for Texas Teen Book Festival, Heidi Heilig (author of FOR A MUSE OF FIRE, THE GIRL FROM EVERYWHERE, and THE SHIP BEYOND TIME, and an all-around amazing human being) led a group of us to the bat bridge to try and see the bats. But apparently we were too late in the season so we didn’t get to see the bat swarm. But we had a great adventure nonetheless.
After ALA, I had a late flight out, and Natalie C. Parker’s flight out got cancelled, so we ended up at the hotel bar after ALA, just talking about writing and family and our love of Star Trek.
One of the most amazing things about this whole journey has been all the friends I’ve made, especially with authors I admire. It’s kind of weird to go from being a fan to being a colleague, but it’s wonderful, too.
Tumblr media
Beckmoji: And finally, please summarize Darius using only emojis.
Adibmoji:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In conclusion: should you buy this beautiful book and read it while drinking tea? Answer:
Tumblr media
Huge thanks to Adib AND Adibmoji for giving such beautiful answers to these (fangirl ravings disguised as) questions.
