Labutius Selina (Straw) Mathews, 93, of Saint Cloud, FL passed away Sunday, May 7, 2023 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law who she had lived with the last 14 years. She was born June 14, 1929 in Towanda, PA to her late parents, George Muller Straw and Helen Lorraine Witherite Straw.

Labutius, was nicknamed “Boots”, after an old comic strip named “Boots and her Buddies”. Boots graduated from Clearfield High School, in Clearfield, PA. Labutius then attended Bob Jones University graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Religion. There she met her husband, William Philo Mathews. They married August 19, 1950 and enjoyed 50 wonderful years together until his death of cancer in 2001. She is survived by her children, Elisabeth Jane Daley (Mark) and William George Mathews (div. Carol) and one brother Perry Clark Straw of Oregon, IL. She was preceded in death by her brother Mervin LeVoy Straw and his wife Margrit, brother Philip George Straw, sister-in-law Lorraine Straw, and niece Naomi Dhuse. She leaves her beloved grandchildren: Janelle Holloway (Joseph), Stephen Daley (Mandy), Holly Groce (Michael), Timothy Daley (Laura), Pam Gregory (Michael), Susan Spafford (David), and Erika Christofolo (Ed). She also leaves her great grandchildren: Josiah, Aliyah, Chasen, Trevor, Andrick, Caleb, and Joanna Holloway; Anna and Jackson Buzzard; Benjamin and Nathaniel Daley; Forest Groce; and Zyla Daley; Natasha, Michael, Caleb, and Joshua Gregory; Annika, Jalyn, and Turner Spafford; and Natalie and Nathan Christofolo as well as nieces Barbara Jean Mathews, and Betsy Mathews and nephews John Mathews and Perry Straw.

Labutius (Boots) accepted the Lord as her Savior during her Uncle Rev. Walter Young’s presentation of the Gospel using a replica of the Jewish tabernacle. She came from generations of Christians with her father being a Baptist minister. She grew up in Pennsylvania and New York state. After marriage, they settled in Roxbury, CT where her husband was from. She loved music and wrote songs. She taught music to all 8 grades at Booth Free School in Roxbury and taught piano for many years. Then she became a 2nd or 3rd grade school teacher. Boots kept her class in order, created an enjoyable learning environment, and loved all her students. Former students have shared the impact she had on their lives. She taught in Washington and New Preston elementary schools and was a teaching-principal. Boots earned a Masters of Science Degree in Education from Western Connecticut State College. Boots and Bill moved to Wethersfield, CT where she taught in Berlin elementary schools. She was involved in Connecticut Education Association and NEA and was on the CEA Board of Directors. She played Lady Thiang in the Berlin Teacher’s Association performance of the King and I.

Labutius (Boots) and her husband Bill (Philo) were very involved in every church they attended, including Christ Church in Roxbury, CT, Danbury Baptist Church in CT, Wethersfield Evangelical Free Church in CT, and Berea Baptist Church in Palm Harbor, FL. She taught Sunday School and earned Evangelical Teacher Training Association credentials that allowed her to teach ETTA certified classes to other Sunday School teachers. She was a Sunday School Superintendent and Christian Education Director. She served as Pioneer Girls Chairman, New Education Building Bond Drive co-chairman, choir director, pianist, Women’s Missionary Society officer, youth leader, soloist, and choir member. They also were involved in Gideons.

Boots was involved in the communities they lived in. She was a Girl Scouts leader, in Garden Club, organized Junior Garden Club, and served on the Board of Education in Roxbury. When they retired to Palm Harbor, FL she was involved in Red Hats, Purple Ladies and with the Blue Jay Estates community. Boots sold Tupperware, Sarah Coventry Jewelry, Amway, and Successful Living Books. Bill and Boots hosted and entertained many people in their home, especially missionaries and housed young people from time to time. During retirement they travelled by RV to 49 states (48 states were visited 3 times) including a special trip to Alaska. They also vacationed in Hawaii making it all 50 states visited. They loved to travel and especially liked Bryce Canyon and the Grand Tetons. They also visited many islands and some European countries.

Boots was a friend to everyone. She showed unconditional love and total acceptance of others. She had the gift of encouragement and was loved by everyone who knew her. She loved to study the Bible and sing hymns. Boots looked forward to seeing Jesus face-to-face. She will be greatly missed.

The family appreciates the care by Kindred/Gentiva Hospice for Boots in her last months and by Osceola Memory Gardens for her body before sending her to CT.

The family will receive guests Monday, May 29th from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Rose Hill Funeral Home, 580 Elm St., Rocky Hill, CT. A graveside service, open to the public, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 30th at Center Cemetery, 34 North St, Roxbury, CT.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gideons International, Jesus Project a part of Cru, or The Voice of the Martyrs.

Alvin Community College recognized students for making the Fall 2017 Dean’s and Merit Lists during a reception on February 20.

To be eligible for the Dean’s list students must earn at least a 3.5 grade point average for 12 or more credit hours in a semester and no course with a grade lower than a C. To be eligible for the Merit List, a student must have 7 – 11 college-level semester hours during a semester with a minimum 3.5 GPA with no F or incomplete. College-level courses exclude credit-by-exam, nontraditional, transfer, or developmental courses.

Travis Blankenship, 92

Mr. Travis Edward Blankenship, age 92 of Ferguson, passed away peacefully Saturday, December 21, 2019 at his home surrounded by his                                 Funeral services were December 24, at Dunkirk Methodist Church with Rev. Kenny Bumgarner, Rev. Mark Revill and Sister Louella Marley officiating. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church cemetery.  

           Mr. Blankenship was born July 16, 1927 in Wilkes County to Philo Hall Blankenship and Josephine Ann Groce. He retired from furniture manufacturing. Mr. Blankenship was a member of Dunkirk United Methodist Church.

           In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife; Mildred Marie McNeil Blankenship, a son in law; Stephen Ayers and a daughter in law; Teresa Blankenship.

Mr. Jack Monroe Ledford, age 78 of North Wilkesboro, passed away Friday, December 20. 2019 at State Employees Credit Union Hospice Home in Yadkinville.

           Funeral services were  December 22,   at Baptist Home Baptist Church with  Rev. David Jones, Rev. Dan Keistler and Mr. Randy Gambill officiating. Burial will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park.  

           Mr. Ledford was born February 25, 1941 in Clay County to Bayse Thomas Ledford and Myrtle Cody Ledford. He was the Founder of Jack Ledford Concrete. Mr. Ledford was a member of Baptist Home Baptist Church.

           In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife; Barbara Ledford and a sister; Marilyn Ledford.

Miss Electa Marie Johnson, age 98 of North Wilkesboro passed away Friday, December 20, 2019 at Wilkes Senior Village.

           A Private Funeral Service with Rev. Mark Rupard officiating will be held.

 Miss Johnson was born March 31, 1921 in Wilkes County to William Monroe and Sarah Ila Gregory Johnson. Miss, Johnson retired from CenturyLink-Sprint and was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church in North Wilkesboro.

           In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters; Cordie Gregory and Flossie Mathis and six brothers; Blum, Carl, Claude, Gordon, Fonse and Richard Johnson.

           She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Kyle Stanley, age 86, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Friday, December 20, 2019 in Statesville. Mr. Stanley was born September 4, 1933 in Wilkes County to Kelsey and Ollie Jane Kilby

Stanley. He was saved and a member of Bethel Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, and wife; Onie Mae Shumate Stanley, infant daughter; Glenda Stanley, several brother and sisters.

           Mr. Stanley is survived by his son; Ronnie Stanley and wife, Dawn, of North Wilkesboro, granddaughters; Shana Dollar, and husband, Robert, of North Wilkesboro, and Melissa McGinty of North Wilkesboro, great-grandsons; Robbie Dollar, Rylan Dollar and Grayson McGinty of North Wilkesboro, two sisters; Roxie Johnson of Winston-Salem and Evon Holder of Hays, special friends; Teresa and Karen, and several nieces and nephews.

           Funeral services are private.

           Memorials may be made to, American Cancer Society, c/o Annette Battle, Relay for Life, PO Box 9, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.

           Miller Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

 Michael Cifaldo, 54

Mr. Michael Anthony Cifaldo better known as "Waldo", age 54 of North Wilkesboro passed away Thursday, December 19, 2019.

           Memorial services were December 23,  at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Mr. Chuck Wagoner officiating.  

           Mr. Cifaldo was born November 4, 1965 in York, PA to John and Laura Corine Smith Cifaldo.  

           He was preceded in death by his mother.

           He is survived by his wife; Amy Michelle Brown Cifaldo of North Wilkesboro, one daughter; Kaitlyn Hickman and husband Philip of Millers Creek, one son; Kyle Allen Cifaldo of Weaverville, grandson; Zeb Hickman, his father; John Cifaldo and his step-mother Ruby of Churchville, MD, three sisters; Deborah Sheets of Hays, Cynthia Cifaldo of North Wilkesboro, step-sister; Melody Johnson and husband; Steve of Fort Mill, SC, four brothers; John Allen Cifaldo and wife Diane of Dallastown, PA,  Edward Angelo Cifaldo and wife Tina of Winsor, PA, Jason Leiphart of York, PA, Christopher John Cifaldo of Baltimore, MD, five step-brothers; Willie Chavis and wife Tammy of Rowland, NC, Mark Chavis and wife Mary of Street, MD, Christopher Chavis and wife Diane of Jarrettsville, MD, Jefffery Oxendine and wife Denise of Fallston, MD and Joseph Oxendine and wife Brandy of Rowland, NC.

           Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 9, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659

  Tyler Anderson, 24

Mr. Tyler Flake Anderson, 24, of Boomer, was received into the arms of Jesus on Thursday, December 19, 2019.

           Tyler was born on June 16, 1995 in Wilkes County to Robert David Anderson and Penny Gaye Weber.

           Tyler was an attendee of Pleasant Home Baptist Church.

           Tyler was an outdoors man he enjoyed wrestling, RC car racing and cheering for the Panthers.  

           Tyler is preceded in death by his mother, Penny Gaye Weber; grandfather, Flake Weber; grandmother, Linda Anderson; Uncle, Harless Moore

           Tyler is survived by father, Robert Anderson of N.Wilkesboro; brother, Zachary Anderson (Anne) of Boomer; grandmother, Margie Weber of N.Wilkesboro; nieces, Catherine Anderson, Leigha Nixon; nephew, Dylan Gilligan; aunts, Vickie  Mikeal (Kenneth ) of Wilkesboro , Laura Weber of N.Wilkesboro and many cousins.  

           Funeral was  December 23,  at Pleasant Home Baptist Church.  Burial   followed  at Foundation Church on Edgewood Rd.  

           Pastor Jason Bumgarner and Rev. Donnie Shumatewere officiating.

           In addition to flowers memorial donations may be given to Pleasant Home Baptist Church, 735 Pleasant Home Church Rd, Millers Creek, NC 28651

           Adams Funeral Home of Wilkes has the honor of serving the Anderson Family.

 Gaither Lane,  89

Gaither Lane, age 89, of Millers Creek, passed away Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist Health-Wilkes Regional. He was born January 22, 1930 in Wilkes County to Dora Lane. Mr. Lane loved to take walks, he  also enjoyed visiting with neighbors.

           Gaither was preceded in death by his mother; brother, Odell Lane and sisters, June Lane Wagoner, Mae Lane.

           Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

           Funeral service was December 20,  at Miller Funeral Chapel with eulogy by Steve Johnson. Burial followed in Mountlawn Memorial Park.  

           Miller Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

ACC Announces Fall 2016 Dean's and Merit List

Alvin Community College recognized students for making the Fall 2016 Dean’s and Merit Lists during a reception on February 13.

To be eligible for the Dean’s list students must earn at least a 3.5 grade point average for 12 or more credit hours in a semester and no course with a grade lower than a C. To be eligible for the Merit List, a student must have 7 – 11 college-level semester hours during a semester with a minimum 3.5 GPA with no F or incomplete. College-level courses exclude credit-by-exam, nontraditional, transfer, or developmental courses.
