Bangladesh's interim government revoked the diplomatic passport of ousted premier Sheikh Hasina on Thursday, after she fled a student-led uprising by helicopter to India earlier this month.
The move to cancel Hasina's documents leaves the former autocratic leader in potential limbo, and comes on the same day that a United Nations team arrived in Dhaka to assess whether to investigate alleged human rights violations.
More than 450 people were killed -- many by police fire -- during the weeks leading up to Hasina's ouster, as crowds stormed her official residence in Dhaka and ended her iron-fisted 15-year rule.
The interior ministry said in a statement that Hasina's passport and those belonging to former government ministers and ex-lawmakers no longer in their posts "have to be revoked".
It also poses a diplomatic dilemma for Hasina's current host, regional powerhouse India.
'Disproportionate force'
Hasina, who fled to an airbase near India's capital New Delhi, was a close ally of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose Hindu-nationalist government preferred her over her rivals from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, which it saw as closer to conservative Islamist groups.
While India is hosting Hasina, Modi has also offered his support to the new Bangladeshi leader, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, who is heading the caretaker administration.
"The former prime minister, her advisers, the former cabinet and all members of the dissolved national assembly were eligible for diplomatic passports by virtue of the positions they held," Dhaka's home ministry said in a statement.
"If they have been removed or retired from their posts, their and their spouses' diplomatic passports have to be revoked."
Dhaka's new authorities said that Hasina, and other former top officials during her tenure, could apply for a standard passport, but that those documents were contingent on approval.
"When the aforementioned people apply afresh for ordinary passports, two security agencies have to clear their application for their passports to be issued," the ministry added.
Hasina's government was accused of widespread abuses, including the mass detention and extrajudicial killing of political opponents.
The UN rights office assessing the protest response had said in a preliminary report last week that there were "strong indications, warranting further independent investigation, that the security forces used unnecessary and disproportionate force".
Yunus has said his administration would "provide whatever support" UN investigators need.
Separately, a Bangladeshi war crimes tribunal set up by Hasina has launched three "mass murder" probes into its founder over the recent unrest.

Bangladesh's former prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, has been staying at a secure location in India since she quit and fled following weeks of student-led violent political unrest. Since Bangladesh's ex-PM Sheikh Hasina fled Dhaka by military helicopter and landed at an Indian air force base near New Delhi on August 5, there's been widespread speculation that she will seek asylum in another country. Plans to seek asylum in Europe or the Middle East, however, haven't so far been successful, according to Indian media reports. In Bangladesh, meanwhile, a new caretaker government is in place, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government in New Delhi is weighing its options carefully as to how to engage with the new interim administration in Dhaka. 'A delicate dilemma for India' India shares a porous 4,100-kilometer-long (2,500-mile) border with Bangladesh. New Delhi has long been concerned about human trafficking, infiltration and terrorist activities along the frontier, particularly as Bangladesh borders the Indian states of West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram, which are prone to violent insurgencies. India was able to rely on Hasina's administration to ensure these security risks were kept in check. Her ouster has presented New Delhi with a strategic challenge. Another concern for India is the fate of religious minorities in Bangladesh, where Hindus make up about 8% of the nation's 170 million people.

Hasina flees Bangladesh bleeds. What awaits Delhi? Top takeaways
A man proudly climbs atop the statue of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman – Bangabandhu, the founding father of Bangladesh and urinates on his head. While others bring down his statue with bricks and bats. Museums were ransacked and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s official residence ‘Ganabhaban’ was stormed. Protesters walked out with conquests – stolen furniture, her saree and inner garments. These were visuals from a Bangladesh that fell into the lap of anarchy after months of protests peaked to end Hasina’s 15-year rule and forced her to abruptly fly out of Dhaka. One of India’s friendly neighbours, Bangladesh shares a long history with the country and finds common ground in language, culture and cuisine with West Bengal across the border. Now its future is uncertain. Sheikh Hasina recently visited India to attend PM Modi’s swearing-in ceremony and had acknowledged Dhaka’s good ties with Delhi when she became the Prime Minister for the fourth time in January this year after her party, the Awami League, won the general elections boycotted by much of the opposition over allegations of rigging. As the bloody crisis continues to swell, it’s pertinent to understand Delhi’s approach to the developments. BANGLADESH NEW REGIME DOES NOT WANT CONFRONTATION WITH INDIA What’s getting many anxious is the anticipation that the new government after Hasina might be anti-India or anti-Hindu. Even as Hasina faced allegations of widespread corruption, she could, to a large extent, control the communal elements. With her gone, the thought of an extremist regime got many worried. But Dhaka has assured that attacks on Hindus will be controlled and, as per a report today, such instances have been broadly controlled. Bangladesh is volatile, but the army is in constant touch with the Ministry of External Affairs in India. EAM Jaishankar also assured in Parliament that the Indian government is in touch with the Bangladesh Army in light of the recent developments. BANGLADESH STILL NEEDS ECONOMIC AID AND SUPPORT FROM INDIA Even as anti-India protests erupted in Dhaka months before and is still a dominant sentiment across the protest-engulfed country, Dhaka still needs economic aid and support from Delhi, which makes it clear that it can’t afford to have an anti-India stance at this point. Further, India has also not given shelter to Hasina to not upset the Army-backed caretaker government – a move that does not isolate Delhi from the rest of Southeast Asia and does not give advantage to China. DELHI ON WAIT-AND-WATCH MODE The movement that forced Hasina to step down also allegedly had the backing of Pakistan’s ISI and Jamat as claimed by experts, and what gave wind to it was the discontentment among the people over quota and employment. External forces which allegedly are at play could have their eyes on the stability around India. But India is on wait-and-watch mode and a top-level meeting on the crisis has also been chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. CENTRE IN TOUCH WITH BENGAL GOVERNMENT OVER INFILTRATION FEARS Bengal-Bangladesh border was a matter of concern as many feared large-scale infiltration amid the communal undertones that run through Dhaka’s volatile nerves. Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has appealed for peace and requested not to communalise the crisis as she assured that the state government would work according to the instructions of the Centre. However, the closing of the Petropol border has affected daily trade. Moreover, this is not a TMC Vs BJP battle, but a pivotal development that concerns India with the potential of reshaping geopolitics surrounding the subcontinent. Modi 3.0 With 72 Ministers Takes Oath, 9 New Faces In Cabinet
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took oath today along with 71 ministers of the new coalition government. Thirty of them are Cabinet Ministers, five independent charge, and 36 Ministers of State. The portfolios will be announced later.
Tumblr media
PM Modi, 73, will head a coalition government in his third term, or Modi 3.0, for the first time since he became Prime Minister in 2014 following a huge "Brand Modi" victory after 10 years of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) rule.
He is the second Prime Minister after Jawaharlal Nehru to be elected for a third term in a row.
The oath ceremony is being held at the lawns of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, with the weather office forecasting a maximum temperature of 42 degree Celsius in the national capital.
President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath to PM Modi. Rajnath Singh and Amit Shah took oath after him. Nitin Gadkari was the fourth leader to be administered the oath of office by the President. JP Nadda, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Nirmala Sitharaman, S Jaishankar, and Manohar Lal Khattar followed in taking oath.
HD Kumaraswamy of the Janata Dal (Secular), who took oath after Mr Khattar, was the first leader from any of the BJP's allies in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to take oath. Soon after, Janata Dal (United) leader Lalan Singh, a close aide of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, also took oath.
Sarbananda Sonowal was the first leader from the northeast to take oath today, Kiren Rijiju the second.
Virendra Kumar, a prominent Scheduled Castes face of the BJP and eight-time MP, was inducted into the Narendra Modi government. He won the election from Madhya Pradesh's Tikamgarh reserved seat.
Supporters of leaders who have been called to the stage clapped and cheered loudly, as they saw their leaders walk towards the mic to be administered oath by the President.
Jyotiraditya Scindia's induction into the Modi 3.0 council of minister has cemented his importance in the BJP since he left the Congress four years ago, marking the beginning of his second stint in the Union cabinet.
Hardeep Singh Puri, the former diplomat who helped India navigate through two back-to-back oil crises, was among the ministers sworn in today.
Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan has solidified his status as the "real" political heir of his father, Ram Vilas Paswan, after he was inducted into the Narendra Modi government today. With this, Chirag Paswan makes a remarkable comeback in Bihar's turbulent political landscape.
Leaders from India's neighbourhood and the Indian Ocean Region including Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina attended the event.

Cyclone Remal Leaves Trail Of Destruction In Bengal, 2 Dead In Bangladesh
Severe cyclonic storm Remal made landfall between the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh, unleashing winds up to 135 kmph. The storm, which struck between Sagar Island and Khepupara near the southwest of Mongla in Bangladesh at 8:30 pm on Sunday, brought torrential rains, flooding homes and farmlands, leaving widespread destruction in its wake.
Tumblr media
Two people were killed in Bangladesh since the cyclone made landfall last night, said an official from the country's disaster ministry. West Bengal has reported no casualty so far.
Ahead of the storm, disaster management authorities and security forces across Bengal and northeastern states were placed on high alert. District administrations in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Manipur, and Mizoram were instructed to take precautionary measures to mitigate the impact.
Cyclone Remal disrupted air, rail, and road transportation in Kolkata and southern Bengal. The Eastern and South Eastern Railways cancelled several trains, and the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata suspended flight operations for 21 hours, affecting 394 flights. The airport resumed operations at 9 am today. The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata also halted operations.
In the city's Bibir Bagan area, a wall collapsed due to heavy rain injuring one person. Reports from North and South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore districts indicated extensive damage to thatched roofs, electric poles, and trees. Low-lying areas near Kolkata experienced severe flooding.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) issued warnings of extremely heavy rainfall across Assam and other northeastern states on May 27 and 28. Orange and Red alerts were issued for various districts, anticipating severe weather conditions. Squally winds of 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, were expected over south Assam and Meghalaya.
The Meghalaya government advised residents to prepare emergency kits, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay updated with weather reports. Tripura's government closed all educational institutions on May 27 and 28 and suspended flight operations on the Kolkata-Agartala route until Monday morning.
Cyclone Remal damaged fragile dwellings, uprooted trees, and toppled electric poles. In the Sundarbans' Gosaba area, one person was injured by debris. Over one lakh people were evacuated from vulnerable areas in West Bengal before the cyclone struck.
The West Bengal government evacuated approximately 1.10 lakh people from coastal and vulnerable regions to cyclone shelters and other safe locations. Evacuations focused on South 24 Parganas, particularly Sagar Island, Sundarbans, and Kakdwip.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting to review the storm response, while West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose monitored the situation closely. Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged residents to stay indoors, assuring them of governmental support.
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has mobilised 15,000 civic employees to manage post-cyclone recovery, including the quick removal of uprooted trees.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted intensifying rains and winds in southern Bengal districts. Fourteen National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed across affected districts, including Kolkata. The state government also readied State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams for relief efforts.
Nine disaster relief teams are on standby. The Indian Navy has prepared two ships with Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) supplies and medical aid. Specialised diving and flood relief teams are also on standby.
