East slavic naming guide
From a ukrainian artist who grew up in russia-influenced culture and has russian friends. Probably can also be applied to other east slavic nationalities, but I can't talk for them, so I strongly advice to do additional research.
So, you desided to make a character that is russian, ukrainian, belorussian or perhaps rusyn. It is very nice, we'd love some representation! But how to name your new east slavic creature in a way that would sound right for their real counterparts? Let's go over some frequent mistakes I notice in names of slavic characters.
Structure of the name
Our names consist of name, patronymic (usually) and surname. There can be exeptions from the established rule, but usually name and surname is a must.
Name
Gender is stupid, but if you want to be aware of it, then please mind which gender the chosen name represents. There are names that can be considered unisex in their nickname form, like Alexander (m) and Alexandra (f) is commonly redused to Sasha (f/m/whatever), or Evgeniy (m) and Evgeniya (f) can be nicknamed Zhenya (f/m/whatever). Mind that nicknames are usually used by friends and family, and it is considered polite and respectful to refer to a person you don't really know/who is much older than you or is of a higher rank or position by their full name and patronymic/matronymic (ex. "...so my teacher, Alla Ivanovna..." "Andrey Romanovich, can I ask you something about the task you gave us earlier?") (more on that later) Full, unshortened version of the name is rarely used in friendly and family settings, especially if the name is long and common. No friend or family would call you Vladislav if they don't mean it in comedic way or using your Full Name (tm) when they're angry (you know what I mean, your parents do that too), on a day-by-day basis people who know you would usually just call you Vlad. I encourage you to look up common nicknames for names when you choose them and to think about how other characters would refer to your east slavic depending on their manneurisms and relationships. Some nicknames are more often used in sertain settings than others, for example, here's name Sergey. Common nickname is Serezha/Serega, but on the streets (tm) it can be shortened to Seryi, which literraly means Gray, so have fun with that.
Surname
Please please PUHLEASE WATCH THE ENDINGS OF THE SURNAMES Most of the words in east slavic languages are gendered, especially surnames and patronymic/matronymics, that change their endings depending on who they belong to! Ex: If a character is male, then his SurnameNamePatronymic would be Sobolev Alexander Vasilyevich. If a character is female, her SNP would be Soboleva Alexandra Vasilyevna. You see where I'm going, right? There are some surnames that don't change, like Onyshenko, or Yakovenko, for example, that stay the same, no matter who they belong to. Be aware of that when you choose a surname and check how it changes and if it does at all, please. We would appreciate it greatly.
Patronymic/matronymic
Most of the time you meet people with patronymics, aka derivative word from the name of their father. It is uncommon, but not unheard of, for people to have matronymics (same but with their mother's name) or have neither. They pretty much always change depending on the gender of a person, ex.: There is a dude named Bogdan. His son would have patronymic Bogdanovich, his daughter - Bogdanovna, and his nonbinary child would probably choose a plural form of the word - Bogdanovni, but there are no rules for that in languages I know, so I'd ask actual east slavic nonbinary people how they go about that. People usually actually use patronymics/matronymics combined with full names in official settings. NP/NM is usually used by students when they reffer to teachers, by subodrinates when they talk to their boss, by kids when they talk to their friend's parents and etc. It's basically ms./mrs./mr. of the east slavic languages. It is also common for older people to call each other only by patronymic/matronymic if they know each other well, like if they are neighbours, colleagues or friends. They also usually shorten the patronymics/matronymics when they do that, so Ivanovich becomes Ivanich and so on. People younger than, like, fourty, usually don't do that and just use names if they know each other well. It's always good to double-check the spelling and pronounciation of specific everything (name, surname, patronymic/matronymic), because boy do they hold linguistic surprises. Thank you for reading, have fun, do your research, don't be afraid to try new things and ask questions!

Decided Nebula needed a friend, so I got my cat a cat 💚💚💚
So far he likes playing/roughhousing and laying on my chest and wants to try everything I eat/drink. Hoping he might take to life as an adventurecat and go on hikes with me :)

Have a list of the names of Nyari characters in my little sci-fantasy story. Mostly because I worked really hard on them and need reassurance that they don't sound like utter shit skjfghd because they sound very human right now? Or elvish which hey the Nyari are definitely inspired by "what if elves but carnivorus and in space" so I guess that fits.
Amlýðverr - the emperor, name meaning "divine protector"
Jynyr - the empress, name meaning "unyielding strength"
Dýlaga - the emperor's official mistress and mother of the crown prince, name meaning "mother wolf"
Rúnvarður - the empress' lover, father of the crown princess, and a general; name meaning "oathkeeper"
Lifærnir - a general and royal advisor, name meaning "wise one"
Ránvísir - the spymaster, name meaning "bird speaker"
Cjáldyfr - the crown prince, name meaning "black wolf"
Ljósverra - the crown princess, name meaning "divine ectasy"
Dómráður - the prince's lover and a lord in his own right, naming meaning "judgment of the gods"
Gyðrystir - a royal assassin, also a lover of both Cjáldyfr and Dómráður; name meaning "spiritual strength"
Teyhljómr - the princess's lover, naming meaning "many whispers"
The conlang is obviously based off of a few real languages with Icelandic and Old Norse and Old Germanic languages being at the forefront cause I didn't just want to yoink a modern language still spoken by cultures I don't share ancestry with.
I like the names, and they fit with the original idea I had for the story ("what if you drop a team that's more Star Trek vibes onto a planet that's more LotR and ASoIaF?" to the point there are even tentatively space dragons), but I also want to be sure they don't sound ridiculous?

i want. so badly. to be able to have names that are satisfying. they mean a lot to me and i get they’re characters and aren’t real but i am frustrated and it feels like i’m making them insignificant or. something.
for the rich/main fam we are using Mkyedise for the last name bc i took it from my d&d characters and there is
Ephraim and Zinnia for parents and Galileo, Caius, Zodiac, Mayfly, and Roisin for the kids.
i’m finally happy with all their names, so it’s time to move on, and now i’m trhing to work on the werewolf family and it’s fucking Hard
not a single one of them has a satisfying name
there’s a mother, father, older sister, and younger son
they’re also rich but it’s less important bc the main character of that family is the son and he’s disconnected from his family

Hey rain world fans!
I am an alter of a system, I am an iterator and I am trying to find a name, It has not been easy, I have some ideas and would like some further suggestions, I've previously thought of my name being centered around something electrical or spectral (maybe even both) But I am simply just so unsure, names are hard and sadly I do feel like what I pick is final, so I am incredibly anxious about finding a name, then later hating it, but hopefully I can escape that feeling if it does happen, currently I've got "Echo of a pulse"/"Echoing pulse" but am not sure how good of a name that is. I'd enjoy any suggestions/thoughts you all may have and am open to questions if you'd like to, I will not mind as long as you do not bombard me with more then.. lets say 5. Oh and here is me for reference if you'd like that.

(also, We've had the idea of doing colored posts, would any of you be against that idea?)

hi!! im sort of new to the community and i just wanted to know like. how do you find an object's name?? ive been dating my laptop for a few months now and it just feels weird calling him "my laptop" and nothing else, but i don't know his name or even if he has one. does anyone, either running or following this blog, have any advice? -@jpegender
Usually, if I don't get a vibe for the objects name (it sometimes just comes to me, ya know?), I go to baby naming sites and see my object of affection seems to vibe with any of the names I find on there.

Does anyone have good sources on Indian full names and namibg conventions?
I spent an hour looking myself but i had a hard time concentrating on the words and understanding them proper, and i dont know what i should focus on researching because i found sources that listed like 5 things Surnames could come from
The name i have so far is
Pradeep Chandra Ballariker
Pradeep - Light, Lantern
Chandra - Bright as the Moon
Ballari - city in Karnataka, and 'Ker' is a suffix used in Surnames, to denote where his family comes from
I have no idea if it's proper or not and i dont know where to look

Hi- I saw that you were wanting asks to help name oc’s and ive got one that I actually want to use for a webcomic but i dont have set name for him because im struggling for a good one
I know it seems kinda basic but id like a more unique name for him (not like John or Robert), maybe from some mythology? He’s into myths so I could write it in somehow if you choose that. I dont mind where the name comes from nor the meaning
thanks in advance if you help!! have a nice day :)
Unique names gotcha!
Mako, Aloetus, Aste, Arak, Becatha, Cheny, Kastow, Iqbal, Petrichor, Kenay, Kenmay, Culkin, Canthin, Gen, Ki
I wouldn't say I'm the biggest mythology knower but. Here (some may be remixed from existing names): Agem, Culain, Angus, Castor, Pan, Priam, Troilus, Troy
I'm hoping those are good? But you're always free to pop in for another try, if not! I hope you also have a nice day there ^~^
