Meet Yume (They/He/Any)! They're a shape shifting fox spirit that used to live in the remote mountain regions outside Salt City. I love them
More info about them under the cut!
Personality wise, Yume is generally warm hearted but very mischievous. They enjoy being around Reigen because it's endlessly entertaining to them how much people like him when he's obviously such a liar. They really like Mob too, due to his gullible nature and his pure heart. They're not a fan of Ekubo however, he's too genuinely mean and they're not a fan of how he talks about Mob sometimes. Yume's favorite forms include a 14yr old that hangs out around Mob's school, a ~30yr old office worker who tags along with Reigen on occasion, and a scraggly long legged fox. They've been around for ~120 years, but they're fairly anti-social, having been mostly in the company of animals. That said, in human form they tend to have the psychology of a mid to late 20's person, though with not that much social experience. They tend to be a bit physically standoffish and they laugh too loudly at jokes. They love puns especially.
They have some spiritual powers, though they mostly extend to themselves. They can shape shift and they have very mild "brainwashing" powers. When in human form, they can influence the minds around them to accept that strangers have known them for a while with minimal prompting. ‪ This helps them blend in with crowds and they use this power to occasionally take classes with Mob to learn whatever is interesting to them, particularly music, math and history. Instead of a stranger, people will fill in the blanks of who they are and accept them as having "always" been there. They can't do something as complicated as integrate themselves into a family fully- like they can't make a family believe they're related by blood- but they could convince a family they've been friend for a while. The more complicated the history, the harder it is to maintain.
They meet Reigen and Mob when they get called out to a logging site where their equipment keeps malfunctioning due to an alleged haunting. At the site they meet a high schooler who is recording themselves exploring the "haunted" site, though they don't seem to really know how to work the camera. ‪ Eventually Mob, who can tell there is definitely a spiritual presence at the site, leads them to a small shrine that seems to have been abandoned for some time. Mob senses a lot of very sad energy and surmises that the spirit is sad their forest is being destroyed. ‪ Reigen suggests a small ritual to cleanse the shrine, and he and Mob take the small fox statue out of the shrine to make sure it's not destroyed. On their way out they find the camera left behind by the supposed teen. The footage the teen shot earlier of them turns out to only show Mob and Reigen... as obviously the teen was the fox spirit.
Yume eventually shows up at Reigen's office as that's where their statue now resides, and they provide hijinx by both enabling Reigen and messing with him and Mob through the show. I would guess that their "growth/change" moment would end up at a particular prank from Yume being especially mean spirited, and when pressed about it they just say "Well, it's in my nature. That's just how I am." which is challenged by Mob. After they take on a more protective role over Salt City, watching over the citizens and protecting them from mishaps.
