Note
The old man wound up the little toy once again and for the first time, he could hear the gentle tik-tok-tik of its clockwork-heart.
Mazras eyes grew wide as they krimskrams mouse scooted across the workbench. His long elven ears jittered in excitement as his small childrens hands tried to catch the clockwork animal.
His grandfather chuckled at the excitement of his youngest grandchild. The boy felt his rough hands ruffle his white curls. He loved being in his grandfathers workshop. Its was his favourite place in the crystal tower. But he especially loved being here with his grandfather.
They boy finally cough the clock work mouse and enthusiastically wound it up again until he could no more. This time the mouse shot over the edge of the workbench and disappeared with several metallic clanks and clonks in a pile of metal rubbish in a corner. Mazra yelp in schock and run after the toy. But it was gone for good. He wasn't allowed to dig in the sharp metal pieces. His grandfather chuckled again.
"Don't be sad, boy. We'll build another one tomorrow. An even better one."
Mazra looked up. Quickly wiping away the tears that had started to form in his eyes.
"Promise?"
"I promise. But now come, we have to go. The council is already waiting for me."
Mazra nodded quickly and hurried after his grandfather. Being the heir of the crystal city was important.
~*~
Being the heir of the crystal city was first and foremost exhausting, as he learned about a hundred years later.
When the big double doors of the workshop closed behind him, Mazra dared to finally take a deep breath. The council meetings were the worst part of being an Alverto. Especially when you were the last Alverto left in the middle lands. But he intended to change that. He just had to finish this. He just had to make this right again.
When his head hadfinally cleared out all the councils politics his eyes wandered over the huge construction in front of him. Maybe it would finally finish it today?
He went over to one of the piles of spare parts and metal pieces of former projects. Didn't he have some clockwork thingies back here? He just needed some tiny gears. He dugg around until something sharp poked his index finger. He yelped and quickly drew his hand back. A small drop of blood poured from the cut. He quickly stuck his finger into his mouth, as he pulled out the perpetrator. It was a old clockwork toy. A small mouse. It looked strangely familiar. But the weight of the years and all the other heavily metals scraps had bend and dented it so much so its clockwork mechanisms were stuck now. Mazra sighed.
"You'll do, I suppose." he shrugged and started to disassemble the toy until he found the parts he needed.
The toys clockwork heart had long stopped. But it's pieces gave life to machine that would change the world. Mazras ears jittered in excitement as he finally heard the first tik-tok-buzzing of his masterpiece.
"Elyina, I am coming." he whispered.
