Getting ready for NaNoWriMo?

Over the past six weeks, we've shared tons of resources, activities, and advice to help you get prepared to write a novel in our "NaNo Prep 101" course.

If you literally just decided "oh hey, writing a novel sounds cool, I think I might try that," no worries! Here's a round-up of some of our favorite NaNo Prep activities, or you can check out our full NaNo Prep 101 page and choose your own favorites.

Doing a bunch of prep work isn't necessary, of course—there are many NaNoWriMo writers who identify as "pantsers", a.k.a. people who "fly by the seat of their pants". But we hope these resources will help you find some fun and inspiration, too!

Gearing Up for NaNoWriMo with Novlr

Hi everyone 👋 I’m Pamela, Writer Development and Community Lead at Novlr!

October is coming to an end, and so is the time to prepare for NaNoWriMo (a time we affectionately call Preptober).

I hit my head, what is NaNoWriMo?

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is an annual event where writers from all over the world work toward the same goal - writing 50,000 words - while offering and receiving support from other writers.  

Throughout the year, NaNoWriMo also provides resources and support for writers, as well as events like Camp NaNoWrimo. 

Okay, and who are you?

We’re Novlr, and we’ve got a long history with NaNoWriMo. Our co-founders, Kim and Thomas, and myself are all NaNoWriMo vets, and Novlr has sponsored NaNoWriMo since 2019 because we share their aims of supporting writers and uplifting the writing community. 

Novlr is a writing workspace designed to get you from the spark of an idea to a completed first draft without any distractions.  We’re completely free to use for up to five projects, and we are the first creative writing platform to be writer-owned.*

I wasn’t going to do Nanowrimo (National Novel Writing Month) this year. In the past, it has been great for pushing myself to write a lot, but that has also been the problem. I end up writing a bunch of words to hit word count that aren’t actually useful for my story.

And while I do believe there’s not really such a thing as wasted writing, that the act of writing itself is practice, the level of extra writing I was doing during Nanowrimo isn’t helpful towards certain goals. Like finishing a manuscript.

However, never say never 😂. I have a new outlook on outlining and a solid new novel idea and would you look at that, there’s the perfect amount of time between now and November.

I’m starting to look at outlining as less of an Event A happens then Event B happens and more of a “is there conflict?” “are there character arcs?” sort of thing. This method of outlining is going to let me sort out a lot of those issues that lead to all the fluff writing I tend to do during Nanowrimo because I don’t have time in November to stop and go back to the drawing board when I need too.

All of this goes hand in hand with the other writing thing I’ve been thinking about lately, how much time ideas need to simmer, but that’s another post for another day.

Which character has a secret that they would take to the grave?

I mean... I have several characters who have secrets that they would LIKE to take to the grave.

But... I’m not going to let them do that sooo....

Okay, joking aside, probably my best non-spoilery answer for this would be Nameer Khatri.

He and Andric have been friends since childhood, and I’m about 90% certain that at some point in their teens, Andric was Nameer’s teen-crush.

It was never spoken about or acted on, and I’m about 75% sure Andric doesn’t know about it.

And Nameer will never ever tell.

Polish: destroyer of peace) Gender: male Race: half human/ half troll Age: 39 Defining looks: narrow red eyes with thermo vision, under bite with sharp teeth, long glossy black hair, always wears multiple weapons under his coat Motto: "Wherever you are, I will find you and I will hunt you down." Character: focused, competitive, proud, passionate, witted, strong-willed, brutal, grim Backstory: No one knows about his past, and he never talks about his childhood, but it is apparent that he was raised to be a killing machine from a young age. Sexuality: asexual Lover: nobody

(tw: hunting, killing, violence) Kazimierz is a proud hunter who was taught to kill from a young age. He hunts beings down for reward money and sometimes just for fun. His victims range from animals like wild boars, whose meat he sells at the local market, to whoever he gets hired to kill as a hitman or gets a lot of reward money for capturing them alive and bringing them to court.

His thermo vision and his great sense of smell make him an even more dangerous hunter, there is no escape for his victims because he sees them even when they are hiding, and he can smell their fear. It's his favourite smell, and he gets kinda high on it, there are only few distractions that could break his concentration while hunting. He is a highly skilled killer with various weapons, but prefers to use his sword and several knives. There are tales about him skinning his victims alive, eating their intestines and other horrific practices he never engaged in. Though Kazimierz is considered to be very bloodthirsty, he prefers clean knife cuts that kill his victims without spilling too much blood and disposes off the bodies quickly to cover his tracks.

There is no place he calls home as he roams the world and travels wherever his services are needed. He has two hunting buddies who travel with him, Hadwin and Talbot. Over the years, he has developed some sort of romantic relationship with Hadwin, much to the dislike of Talbot. In his relationship, Kazimierz is passionate, but also selfish and dominant. There is no soft side to his hard edges, even though Hadwin won't stop trying to bring out a softer side.

Five ways to brainstorm for Nano!

can people who have done/ are doing NaNoWriMo tell me…what counts in the word counting…like if I write the blurb or rewrite something does that not count? Is it only words that haven’t been written down? Because technically someone could rewrite one chapter a bunch of times until they’ve “written 50,000” but also a lot of people are in the rewrite stage of their novel like me where they are going in for their second draft
