New York City’s hottest new techno club is…a Seaport pizza shop!

I knew I was in the correct location from the bright red glow that illuminated the storefront and the quick crunchy beats that blasted boldly into the crisp March air. The trendy Gen-Z crowd (complete in TRIPP NYC cargo pants and a variety of studded sequined belts) was characteristically smoking, BeRealing, and lounging around the premises. Many kids dawned designer sunglasses for the 9PM set, so I felt a bit under-accessorized. But nevertheless, I continued inside.  The venue itself is tight. I mean, it is a pizza shop. The entire space was around the size of the dorm room, so the musical experience is interactive and intimate. You are pressed up against the tabletops and in constant maneuvering due to the small square footage, meaning plenty of opportunities to greet fellow techno-lovers.   At its core, it is a Pizza Parlor and Multidisciplinary Artistic Platforms that supports up-and-coming innovative DJs, musicians, poets, and more! Many sets are live streamed and uploaded to YouTube. So XPizza works as a form of performance and publicity. As each artist is able to create their personal mixes and further promote their digital archives. It shapes XPizza’s DIY and experimental catalog of work and it pushes its talented artists into a growing music-loving community.

MoistBreezy, the resident DJ for @hulahoop.nyc dance parties, demonstrated her superstar status with the filming and shoot of her new music video Why Can’t It Be You at the XPizza space. And at the 190 Front Street location at the night of the shoot, the venue was bustling with creativity on every corner. From local techno-heads to colorful fashionistas to Instagram models, the venue was absolutely packed. The production value was elevated, complete with strobe lighting and a fog machine. MoistBreezy took her platform boots and danced the night away. Stomping, stepping, and serving all over the pizza counter like it was her own stage.   Opening in early January, 2023 by artist and creative director, Cristiano Feleppa Grimaldi, and the award-winning pizza chef, Giovanni Barbieri, XPizza is becoming a downtown dancing phenomena. As exemplified on their website, “We daily host underground artists and independent local crews offering full creative production support and an uncensored, disruptive, free space of expression”. XPizza’s progressive and DIY attitude is extremely refreshing. The individual artist is allowed to take full creative reigns without fear of limits or judgment. Unlike typical Manhattan club venues that capitalize off of industry success and mainstream trends. XPizza’s motive is the elevation of the underground to uplift experimental and radical art. Their counterculture philosophy creates a cultural hub for musical variation and avante-garde performances.

I am beginning to think that over-baked pizza works best with oregon, garlic powder, and DIY underground techno music XPizza is open daily from 12pm-8pm and 190 Front St, NYC, in the Seaport District. Consistent with its underground nature, the venue itself does not have bathrooms. So be prepared for a brief walk in order to relieve yourself. Or if it is late at night, just go behind the bushes. Royal Flush is the 2nd full studio album by Lucky under Prismatic Entertainment. It was released on Oct 7, 2024, the group's 10th anniversary. The album features 10 tracks, including 4 solo songs, one for each member, BOOM! as the title track, and Stellar as a promoted b-side. It is available both physically and digitally.

Lucky promoted the album for a total of 6 weeks. BOOM! peaked at 6 on the Circle Chart and won 3 music show awards. Stellar exploded in popularity, rising to 1 on the Circle Chart and peaking at 12 on the Billboard Hot 200. Stellar won the group 6 music show awards.

✧ . this era was heavily accentuated with lots of leather and chrome, blunt angles, and lots of layering and belts

✧ . lucky's stylist was quoted saying her biggest inspiration were pieces that would be found in a futuristic alien casino

✧ . hiro rocked a mid-length shaggy silver cut, han with grown out black locks, angel had an undercut bleach job, and sunnie kept her classic long black hair with blunt bangs

✧ . as described by thousands of 4luvs online this era served many things, but most importantly: cunt

✧ . a perfect transition from brat summer, playing on a heavy edm sound that is rather new to the group

✧ . when asked about the more experimental songs on the album, sunnie said that with the creative control they're given, the group is always looking for ways to challenge themselves and push the bounds of typical kpop

✧ . lucky has always been known for pushing boundaries in the industry, and their second full album is no exception

✧ . while each member was dressed in relatively racy outfits, especially for BOOM! stages, one of hiro's Stellar outfits took the internet by storm, wearing a tight cut-out top that revealed some under-boob

✧ . it was a source of many arguments online in both 4luv and non-fan spaces, debating whether it was appropriate or even safe to be wearing while dancing on stage

✧ . hiro later posted a selfie in the top from a low angle on her instagram story writing "holding it down," some taking it as a taunt while many fans argue that she was simply assuring that the top was more secure than it seemed

✧ . in between music show appearances, members of the group would make appearances at clubs around seoul for mini performances including hiro and sunnie doing their own dj sets

✧ . these appearances sparked rumors that one or more members would be doing a set at nyc's infamous boiler room, but nothing ever came of it... yet !

✧ . these performances were never advertised, leading fans to do some serious digging and speculating on what clubs to visit on what weekends

✧ . it seems lucky has fully embraced their party reputation with this album, not unexpected by fans but still widely scrutinized by knetz

✧ . even han had something to say about it on live which surprised many 4luvs as he was usually the least outspoken member, saying "we're all adults. we have been for most of our career and we're not scared to shy away from it. we never have. i don't know why it's such a problem all of a sudden."

✧ . Stellar got much more popular than anticipated as a promoted b-side rather than a title track

✧ . the song was only supposed to promote for 2 weeks after BOOM!'s 3 week promotional period, but another week was added after its rise in popularity

✧ . hiro told W Korea that she thought Stellar should have been the title track, but she was outvoted by the production team and that a new remix of the song is in the works

✧ . when asked what songs on the album were their favorites, sunnie chose SourSweet, angel chose JAM, hiro chose Take Off, and han chose Stellar

✧ . kaori went live to give bonbons a sneak peak of her newest album when she was asked about working on SourSweet saying "it was great getting to produce a song for lucky and work with them a bit! i haven’t done much producing since touring and working on a new album back to back, so it was great to get back to it, especially with them! the song is amazing, i promise."

✧ . when asked what Lemonade is about in a q&a on his instagram story, angel answered in video form saying "so, basically, i'm telling the haters they can suck on this--" the video cut off before he could finish the sentence

✧ . overall, Royal Flush has taken its place among the competitors for lucky's most iconic era !

Glad you dig my EDM flute gig - as a matter of fact, I'm back in the studio for the first time in years, working on new music for a wild collaborative performance art project that's been in development for over a year now with a queer performance collective in Berlin. The score has plenty of ambient/techno/trance elements, and my current EDM playlist is a deep well of inspiration.

For many years, I've played at clubs and warehouse parties, taking my unamplified flute and improvising along with whatever the DJ is putting through the speakers as I move through the space, aiming the notes where I sense the physics of the music will carry them, bouncing them off the walls and looking for the groove, the moments where I hook into the flow and without thinking about it anticipate the breaks and key changes and note patterns that are coming two, three, four measures ahead - and the thrill when I nail it just right and see the faces near me light up like Christmas trees and just that quick I'm gone to a fresh part of the space, sometimes with applause ringing at my back...

At a Tom of Finland warehouse party during NYC Pride in 2004, one of the go-go boys was in the green room dressing for his shift on the boxes, I had just finished my last set, my flute key pads sticky with the sweat of 2,000 shirtless guys that hung in the air, clouds of perspiration coating my head, my tongue cut and bleeding - the kid asks me what's that, I say it's my flute, well what do you do with it, I tell him I just play along with what the DJ plays -

and he starts laughing, a huge Cheshire Cat grin on his face, you mean you just put that thing together and play along? Yeah, I say. Jesus Christ! he laughs, incredulous. Holy shit, that's amazing, I've never heard of this, that's crazy shit man, and the kid is so taken with the thought he can't stop jumping around... he'd never heard of such a thing, and God I'll never forget that.

Since I was 15 years old, I've been blowing air through a metal stick with holes in it and waving my fingers up and down on it, and sometimes people are moved to tears or delighted or happy, and sometimes they just go apeshit.

Alt rock has come back in such a big way in the past few years, and as a long-time alt rock fan, I feel kinda vindicated but it's also so disorienting sometimes? Like the same people that would've laughed at my Nirvana shirts in the 2010s now realise how cool a band they were. I'm not on Tiktok, but I've read like Vice articles about how teen tiktokers 'discovered' old music again during lockdown and suddenly it was cool again, and yes, 'old' music included 90s and 2000s bands. Also because of indie sleaze revival, I guess Vice is cool again too? Like it's nice, but I also can't wrap my head around it sometimes

Yes, yes, yes!! Anon this is exactly it. It's not even just limited to 90s and 00s bands, in fact. A friend and I grew up on Led Zeppelin, and so we loved Greta Van Fleet when they first started. I saw them live in 2019, and the crowd was very 50+. Now the kids on Instagram are commenting 'pookie' under singer Josh Kiszka's posts. Apparently tickets to see them when they went back on tour in like 2022/23 were really hard to get, and when I'd walk around campus with my band tee from the 2019 show, people thought I was the hottest shit on campus, which was so wild because two years ago they were calling it grandpa music.

I also noticed in my time on campus that groups of partying kids were suddenly not walking down the street blasting EDM but instead were singing along to Franz Ferdinand's Take Me Out. I've seen cool kids book music venues and throw party shows where their bands cover Van Halen's Jump, and every one of the seemingly hipster kids sings along and knows every word. It's a rennaissance like I've never seen before!

I think 'indie sleaze' revival might slightly pre-date lockdown given Lizzy Goodman's Meet Me In The Bathroom book came out in 2017 and it was already putting attention back on some of those NYC bands, but sure, alt rock revival in general only helped it. Then the documentary version came out in 2022.

You're so right, alt rock is back in such a big way, and I love it :)

Came across this song through the underground rap community, 2hollis starts the song with a fast paced rage beat that develops into a hard hitting EDM instrumental midway. The opening lyrics " I ain't got no time for all that drama, huh Jumpin' out that pit, I took no trauma" automatically gives a catchy head nodding experience to the song. With his underground rap esque lyrics mixed with his presence of Griffith meets NYFW 2hollis seems to be making waves in the underground curating a unique blend of rave meets mosh. Now that he has been exposed to a wider fanbase as he was the opening act on Ken Carson’s “Chaos” tour, 2hollis looks to conquer his own tour of North America starting on October 23rd in NYC.

I live in bum-fuck nowhere and took a full day train ride down to visit the boy I’ve been seeing. We’ve met before in person before he moved back to NYC a few times. We take turns visiting each other and it was my turn shortly after he moved back home. I love the train and don’t mind the long rides. I prep with my switch, a book, my sketchbook, and downloading movies or seasons of shows but I end up just looking out the window and listening to music the majority of the time.

 I’m very sensitive to sounds and anxious around people but in the city it felt like ambience, I didn’t get overwhelmed. I also had him with me the whole time so that probably helped :p . Also also it being cold gives me an excuse to wear earmuffs without being judged. We had to go from Penn Station to the Flushing area for the air bnb. I love public transportation!!! I don’t drive (yet) because I’m terrified and I haven’t found a way that works best for me to learn and living in a small city/big town there isn’t much for transport. Sometimes the uber costs for a 5min drive are 40$ ToT. I’ve never taken our shuttle because it’s sussy. There’s a second one thats less sussy but idk. I have ways around now it’s fine. But NYC!! There’s constant trains and buses. I love it. We played 8ball on the underground subway but the ones that go outside are my fav. The views at night esp are pretty with all the lights. 

He took me to my first rave! We saw LikeMike. He loves raves and edm but I’m more of a goth + acoustic girlie so I haven’t considered going to one myself. In the beginning I was very anxious about what to do with myself but once we had the joint we snuck in I felt a lot better lol. I was still overanalyzing what other people were doing and how to fit in but I was also able to focus more on the music and lights than before. And it was green! My fav color! Yippee! I like when the bass gets so intense my bangs feel like they fly back or like my hairline is fuzzy… Does that make sense…?

Since we stayed in Flushing and it was Chinese New Year week we had a lot of chinese food. We hit Qing Dao three or more times for their pork bao buns and whatever pork sandwich thing they had. I loooove pork bao buns and now I get them at Target all the time. In the last frame on the comic I drew when we went to East Season in Chinatown. That had to be the best chinese food I’ve ever had. I can’t remember exactly but I got wonton soup with pork. He got their roast duck. I tried a piece of his and my brain explodedddd it was so good. I’ve never had roast duck. When I go down again we HAVE to go back. I think we’ll split a half one or something. My dish was very good too. I still dream about it.
